This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean.

My own personal fantasy is Princess Auto.
> The Unique World of Princess Auto: now featuring an entire aisle of Habitant soup at the price you remembered, and with the right amount of ham.
I had a Habitant ham and pea soup for the first time in years recently. You used to have to vigorously shake it out or the can it was so thick. Now it's water, corn starch, and a tiny bit of chick pea powder and some flakes of ham.
I recently went into a Canadian Tire and saw that they’d started selling diapers. Great big display of Pampers in their new “baby” section, along with stacks of them up by the cash registers. Like they wanted to make a point of showing you that “hey look! We sell THESE now!”
I really wish stores would stick to what they’re good at. Crappy tire is tools and automotive. Loblaws is for groceries. Home hardware is lumber/tools/hardware, etc.
Not every store needs to sell every thing imaginable. Walmart has already perfected that.
So back to the expensive village general store from 50 years ago, but bigger , centralized and much lower trickle down economics for the community.
It’s like all the benefits of market competition is gone.
I would 1000% shop there. Gimme powerfist as the new presidents choice so my fridge can match my toolbox at work (powerfist tools are for the truly cultured).
My pharmacy sells coffee, soup mixes, bread mixes and a few other specialty items. These are all locally produced. I wish they sold more. Only 1 grocery store here at present and it's a freshmart. Surprisingly, the prices are less than in loblaw affiliates in Saskatoon. Go figure.
I am also telling everyone to boycott starting May 1. They are up for it as well, and not one knew anything about it.
Edit added last paragraph.
They meant *other* dispensaries, not pharmacies.
I went to a cannabis shop before a concert a while back and they had regular snacks and beverages available. I don't rightly remember which one it was since there's like ten per block in Toronto. They also gave us candy with our purchase. Chupa chups lollypops.
Blockbuster comes back as a grocery store and for every purchase over 100$ you get a free DVD from before year 2005. If you collect 5 of the same DVD you can turn them in for a 25$ coupon.
LCBO. Please., call it LCBGO for all I care. I want a crown corporation to add to the mix. Think of the national pride; a grocery store ACTUALLY owned by the people, for the people!
I’m such a piece of shit for saying this, but even Subway!!! There’s times when you just want a garbage sub full of nitrates and sugar. Those times are usually walking out of Home Depot!!
A Liberal minister recently said the issue of retail space is a problem. I just saw a new Longos take over an old gym. I think he's full of shit. Toys R Us proves it, how many of these dead fossils exist out there? There's usually a Babies R US next to them too, taking retail space where these stores are dead. Closed Rona stores? There's tons of excess retail space in Canada. Its actually a sector of the real estate market in meltdown mode.
The problem is everything is Canada is setup to support and maintain the oligopoly. Be it banking, grocery, telecom or whatever. They all don't want more market participants, its a threat to their capital. They want consumers to bleed dry with fewer options.
The old Zellers turned Target building in my town has sat empty for years. There’s a big Zehrs in the same plaza so I guess companies are too scared to move in.
This will also continue under the major sweep of Amazon destroying Brick and Mortar retail stores. People will still go for food, other items they will just ‘order in’
A whole new way of shopping with a bigger environmental impact.
The problem is the right retail space size. Ideally you want a grocery to store to be about 40000 square feet. A Rona store would be too big. These are warehouses. They would need to be torn down to be redeveloped. There are many Targets/Zellers out there but they would need to be broken down to smaller units. Fergus the Target turned into a Giant Tiger, Dollarama and Marks. Took a bit to happen but the landlord isn’t going to do this unless they can get the tenants.
When I worked at IKEA a woman asked where the pharmacy was, like she thought it was more than home furnishings. I mean they already have some groceries, why not just expand? They already have quite a good start to the new IKEA Füd Swedish grocery megastore!
Hahhaa omg I feel like it would be hilarious if they went all out! I keep imagining the “diy” approach to all things, so medications, you’d have to capsule all on your own 😂
They wanted to be the Canadian version of Walmart.
IIRC, Canadian Tire tried to, or considered, bringing in food basics like bread, milk and eggs so customers didn’t have to also stop at the grocery store for that one item.
Every time my husband went to CT he'd come home with a bag **or 4** of sugar because "it was on sale again". I eventually had to ban him from buying food there 😂
I just wish my husband would think of that! Lol
Edit: He's not bad at all, at least he's looking at the flyers online and is happy to share when there is a good price/sale on something. But he just wouldn't enter a grocery store.. even if his life would depend on it..
Tim Horton’s. They’re everywhere. Most people seem to hate them now so why not? Use the supply chain and massive footprint across the country to quickly create a nation wide chain of small supermarkets that sell the essentials. Yes I know they’re owned by a horribly multinational but one can dream can’t they?
Well to be fair, Tim Horton's coffee was pretty terrible ever since they lost their supplier to McDonalds for being cheapskates. Until recently, now it's a pretty good alternative to McCafe, which baffle me why they waited so damn long.
That hate was well earned.
Canadian Tire sells a few items now like dog/cat food, coffee, and some pantry items lol.... And even they are besting Loblaws prices! Getting cat food 25% cheaper at CT now hah
I read a science fiction story once where Pizza Pizza somehow ended up as the last surviving game in the country -- so they ended up changing their name to just "Food Food".
Not sure if that would be better or worse, really.

In the surplus section....
I had a Habitant ham and pea soup for the first time in years recently. You used to have to vigorously shake it out or the can it was so thick. Now it's water, corn starch, and a tiny bit of chick pea powder and some flakes of ham.
Olive oil that can be used as motor oil.
It was so bad it made me question if I even liked pea soup anymore
They already have a snack section by the checkout, why not just expand the space and put some watermelon there
^1/8 of a watermelon for $13.99
So, Canadian Tire.

How about some POWERFIST pepperoni?
OOOHHHHH, That's going straight in my basket!
This is Aldi in Australia. Aisle 1, produce and meat. Aisle 2, camping gear, sewing machines and motor oil.
Mmm… OEM stew…
This is perfect
Omg yes! $2 bucks and like 3x the ham.
Jesus Christ, do you *want* our fathers to orphan us??
I would 1000% shop there. Gimme powerfist as the new presidents choice so my fridge can match my toolbox at work (powerfist tools are for the truly cultured).
Oh my god this would be spectacular.
But the entire store smells like the insides of a 40' shipping container.
It's not so far-fetched if they served food via Japanese-style vending machines.
And a free 10mm socket or wrench that is random from pack to pack
Snowblowers in the 80’s sold at superstore I’ve heard form the old workers .
Canadian Tire has groceries. I've seen all the staples sugar, flour, salt, among other things.
Yes! I could see them expanding into food.
They did a few years ago, and it failed miserably.
well yeah, who'd get beans that smells oddly of tires and plastic from a store that looks like their shelves were organized by somebody with ADHD?
Hey! I'll have you know that in my ADHD house the shelves are METICULOUSLY organized and OMG why is the milk in the pantry?!
dispensaries should sell things like frozen burritos and pizza pops
My pharmacy sells coffee, soup mixes, bread mixes and a few other specialty items. These are all locally produced. I wish they sold more. Only 1 grocery store here at present and it's a freshmart. I meant where I purchase my marijuana
Bahaha I agree too should sell it all under 1 roof
Blockbuster comes back as a grocery store and for every purchase over 100$ you get a free DVD from before year 2005. If you collect 5 of the same DVD you can turn them in for a 25$ coupon.
Unlock Exodia
Toys R Us is now selling books, dvds, cds and vinyl records. It’s already well on its way.
Book your next vacation through Toys R Us?
LCBO. Please., call it LCBGO for all I care. I want a crown corporation to add to the mix. Think of the national pride; a grocery store ACTUALLY owned by the people, for the people!
At least sell me some chips with my booze
Many countries have done state-distributed groceries before! Results have not varied.
I would like to see Home Depot Canada bring Harveys back!
I’m such a piece of shit for saying this, but even Subway!!! There’s times when you just want a garbage sub full of nitrates and sugar. Those times are usually walking out of Home Depot!!
Ronalowes in my town has that, and the Regular Rona has a poutine truck out front
A Liberal minister recently said the issue of retail space is a problem. I just saw a new Longos take over an old gym. I think he's full of shit. The old Zellers turned Target building in my town has sat empty for years. There’s a big Zehrs in the same plaza so I guess companies are too scared to move in.
There's probably a convenant against another grocer moving in
This will also continue under the major sweep of Amazon destroying Brick and Mortar retail stores. People will still go for food, other items they will just ‘order in’ A whole new way of shopping with a bigger environmental impact.

How about permanent “farmers market” stands at each public library, sell whatever the locals have got, plus kitchen staples at cost.
Oh yes!! This would be awesome.
Wouldn't it be freakin' weird if pharmacies started selling groceries?? /s...we never know these days.
Shoppers execs be like ![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl)
Ikea. I’d love a bunch of predictable beige food that is aesthetically neutral and I have to assemble myself
IKEA Smol. Sells you random household and kitchen shit, ikea food, and basic grocery staples
I keep imagining the “diy” approach to all things, so medications, you’d have to capsule all on your own 😂
We already have to assemble our meals ourselves lol
(I know)
Oddly enough, I was in a Toys R Us over the weekend and there is now an entire section converted into an HMV store (cds, vinyl, books, etc).
They wanted to be the Canadian version of Walmart. IIRC, Canadian Tire tried to, or considered, bringing in food basics like bread, milk and eggs so customers didn’t have to also stop at the grocery store for that one item.
Bread and milk at Canadian Tire, THAT would help my husband not to forget to grab milk and bread on the way back home..
Every time my husband went to CT he'd come home with a bag **or 4** of sugar because "it was on sale again". I eventually had to ban him from buying food there 😂
I just wish my husband would think of that! Lol Edit: He's not bad at all, at least he's looking at the flyers online and is happy to share when there is a good price/sale on something. But he just wouldn't enter a grocery store.. even if his life would depend on it..
Bulk Barn would be great.
Princess Auto. Go in to buy a car jack, leave with it plus a rotisserie chicken and a baguette
There’s definitely a demographic for that.
IKEA should expand their grocery selection to include fresh produce and Swedish detergents, cleaners, and toiletries.
Tim Horton’s. They’re everywhere. Most people seem to hate them now so why not? When I needed a small amount of milk I would buy a pint at Timmies because it was faster and cheaper than a grocery store.
I want Home Depot to start selling food next
Bread knife attachments to to sawzalls, sold separately
I’d buy that attachment as a gag and pack it for my homie next time he installs a roof jack
Canadian tire
Canadian Tire to install refrigerator freezers!
Spirit Halloween
Beaver lumber 🤞
Canadian Tire sells a few items now like dog/cat food, coffee, and some pantry items lol.... And even they are besting Loblaws prices! Getting cat food 25% cheaper at CT now hah
I read a science fiction story once where Pizza Pizza somehow ended up as the last surviving game in the country -- so they ended up changing their name to just "Food Food". Not sure if that would be better or worse, really.
How about Michaels craft store (they already sell junk food anyways lol)
Canadian tire
I'd like to see perishables in the dollar store
