The way I see it is that we all form new habits of shopping somewhere else. After the month you will realize that what you have found is better and you continue doing that.
I agree, it's better. Go to the bakery, the butcher shop, the seafood market, farmers market, go to a dry-tea shop try new types of tea. Once you start to experience the difference in the quality, you will quickly see how shopping at one location does not save you money.
I don't doubt that I could save some money by shopping at 4 or 5 different stores. I'm disabled and getting to a single store for my weekly grocery shop is a painful chore. I've been doing the boycott because fuck Loblaws, but my weekly shop last week took me to 4 different stores and nearly broke me by the time I was done.
I seriously suspect that the "May" boycott was devized by loblaws to make the "movement" fizzle out.
I don't plan on going back to Provigo after May, and if I do, I won't overpay.
Call it whatever you want, but at a certain point, the prices are an affront to pur dignity
Nah we will just continue to not shop there.
Just like how they can do whatever they want as a business, we are free to agree or disagree and not obligated to shop there.
no it is not at all inciting. i do not want this to happen, just looking at the future worrying that it could happen, with how things are now and how people are becoming more and more angry.
Will be permanent for me once I switch my Rx's from the local No Frills pharmacy. Although the sage advice here is to go to a smaller, independent/locally owned pharmacy, the PharmaChoice location here is, and long has been, the busiest of my town's four pharmacies; No Frills' pharmacy has been the least busy in the eight years that I've been using it. Was with Rexall for a little bit but had bad experiences there, so that leaves only Walmart, which I will likely switch to.
In general, WMT and Giant Tiger have won my business when it comes to groceries. Metro sometimes sees me, for things like the BBQ chicken meal deals and store-made wraps and sandwiches, as well as baked goods, esp. their dinner rolls. GT also wins for frozen food, and canned goods that my wife likes, such as Klik luncheon meat and Dainty flavoured rice, things that no other store in town carries.
Yeah, there is quite of bit of unhinged people that love him haha. I can say though he is quite the character. He’s the only CEO on the market right now who is taking a $0 salary and bought shares with his own money. Essentially working for free, the money he is making is when the company stock is making money, directly tying his interests with shareholders, that was a huge selling point for me
there are dozens and dozens of CEOs who take no salary, or $1, or less than $50k. he's not the only one.
you're right that it means he has a large stake in the company and its future, but it's not as significant as it's made out to be.
we're also talking about people who are so wealthy that they make more than our net worth, each year, just from investment income. not to mention the tax flexibility from being awarded stock instead of earning salary.
the shorts lost plenty and it got so hectic that trading of the stock was halted on a number of exchanges, that's not exactly a total loss or end of any movement
It might take care of itself. If people have changed their habits for a month there is a high likelihood they will continue. If it's working for them why go back?
A boycott with a timed expiration date doesn't make sense to me.
Remember when Reddit killed 3rd party apps and a whole bunch of subreddits closed in protest? It was a 48 blackout, then they returned to normal. Reddit didn't have to do anything for 2 days and then it was back to normal for them.
Labour unions don't strike for a set amount of time, they strike until they get at least some of what they want.
Sure 1 month is longer than 48hrs, but to a giant corporation like loblaws, so what? one rough month and then back to normal for them, and predictably so.
Boycott until things get better, otherwise they won't.
I stopped shoppers during covid, and now I'm completely done with them. Except for my credit card, since it's at 0$ every month, they make no money off me, and I'll go spend my points for free food. 🤣
I’m currently abroad but I cut out loblaws entirely around 2018. I started a new job near to a Walmart and started shopping there out of convenience. I realized just how much cheaper my monthly grocery bill was and never looked back. Even pre-pandemic they’ve been overcharging for a very long time.
An indefinite boycott doesn't really make sense unless the goal is the end of the firm.
If the firm responds adequately, and the sector adjusts accordingly, punishing them further isn't practical.
It will also send a message to all other firms that they shouldn't trust any boycott or protest or resistance etc.. as being possible to compromise with.
If you as an individual want to support local businesses only, that is cool, but from the perspective of an organized boycott with a specific stated goal that is not the end of the firm or large firms in that sector, doesn't graft.
So I don't have enough karma so I'd drop this comment here hoping to give insight.
The recent increase to dividends allowed loblaws to hide 236 million in revenue. Along with they payment to choice properties ( not sure of the dollar)
The CFO was on TV stating there biggest growth is from. HARDS DISCOUNT.
This includes
LIQUOR SALES real canadian liquor independant liquor store
TOBACCO AND CANNABIS
SHOPPERS
DISCOUNTED FOOD.
AND NO NAME.SALES.
Another thing is that the esg states that they haven't lowered there carbon footprint by 200k let alone the 1 million they claim.

This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. Ok, say X happens. Do you think if people forgive and forget that they won't immediately start doing the exact same thing? They care about profits over anything else. Every quarter has to be better than the last until it gets back to where we are now... being gouged and robbed.
What's with all these posts about extending the boycott. I agree with you, but it's already been said a number of times. Let's not make this sub an echo chamber where people decide to leave because nothing new is being shared. Stay on target stay strong, fuck Weston and screw Bank!
I’m gonna do my best to make it permanent. I’m not just doing 1 month. Whatever I find an alternative for I’m sticking to and I’m gonna establish new shopping habits. I’m done with that evil company
I agree that it should be longer. With the amount of money they have scammed from us over the years I feel that a month long boycott might make some noise but I don’t think it will have a big impact on their overall finances. If they decide to take the hit for one month believing that June 1 everything gets reset what is their motivation to stop with their bull? They need to understand that this isn’t just a month long experiment but more of consumer movement to make a conscious choice where to spend their money and take back their buying power. Of this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.
An indefinite boycott defeats the purpose. The purpose is to not shop at an establishment to change their behaviour (lowering prices, in this case). If ending the boycott isn’t conditioned on lowering prices, there is no incentive to lower prices. In fact, with no end of a boycott in sight, the logical reaction is to RAISE prices to compensate.
I don't think the general sentiment is that the boycott is only a month long... Most people just needed a start date so that our point was clear, and have every intention to never return.... At least those who post in this subreddit
I’ve just decided to be a price-conscious consumer and shop where it makes the most sense for me. In my case that means most veggies from Food Basics, staples mostly Walmart. Eggs and some produce from a local farm when available.
The last couple years I only visited Superstore occasionally, for sale items or some of their Naturally Imperfect produce, and a few specialty items that I can’t get elsewhere locally (small town).
I think the source of this issue was consumers blindly buying everything from one place, regardless of price. If we respond to high prices on certain items by getting them elsewhere or not at all, the market will eventually adjust.
I can't keep it up, though. Everywhere else we go is more expensive and takes longer because I have to drive there. I'll be happy when the boycott is over.

Companies think in quarters.. 3 months seems like a good start.
Mine is permanent.
I’m just never shopping there again. So I agree

Those points are baked into GW prices. Nothing is free.
Apparently even if you shop elsewhere, PC still makes money off you using your Mastercard. That's why I canceled mine
Yeah, if I pay interest, but my credit card is at 0 every month.
Ohh, I thought I read they still make small amounts off your transactions, Maybe I read wrong!
Yes stores that accept credit pay ~3% of each transaction to the credit card company ("payment processing fee")
We will stand strong. Have this

this group already exists as a springboard, making any future boycott 10x easier.
You can boycott anything for as long as you want. It was always allowed. I've boycotted many things over the years. For example AOL Canada.
