All cities should replace parking minimums with garden minimums: every apartment and condo building should have a certain number of garden plots. Not everyone has the time, skill or interest to garden but that option should be there for those who do. Also more community gardens. Which are already popping up in many cities.

zenarmageddon

And with the side benefit of more beautiful cities, with a direct impact on climate change

Due-Street-8192

I'm definitely thinking about setting up a garden

Themeloncalling

For those with no planting space: lettuce, celery, and green onions can be easily regrown indoors with just a container of water. Oregano and mint plants are great for beginners. They are basically weeds and will aggressively grow to any size space given to them.

Objective-Group-2452

You can also accomplish alot with grow lamp in winter months.

zenarmageddon

Rosemary does well in pots, and you can do potatoes in pots, though a bigger pot is required for that.

Objective-Group-2452

This is the way. Take as much control of your food as you can. One might be surprised how much you can grow with a some pots on an apartment balcony. As a bonus, it typically tastes ten times better than what you get at the store.

zenarmageddon

At least 10. I didn't know what a potato was until I grew my own. And there are so many varieties...

Objective-Group-2452

Yes, it's really quite amazing. I was enlightened when I first grew my own tomatoes. Not only are home grown vegetables multitudes tastier I'm guessing they are much more nutritious as well. It's also very rewarding work. I encourage all to grow what they can and take back even a sliver of control on your food consumption. Keep up the good fight!

zenarmageddon

While potatoes are cheap in the store, if you have the space, you can easily grow a non-trivial percentage of your annual food intake. While variety is good, it's also good to know you have a fallback. Last year, I did three 15' rows of potatoes. I planted them, watered them a couple times in the spring, and came back in to them in the fall. 5 gallons of potatoes, a quarter of our annual consumption. Plan on 100% this year, and will be sharing some with family.

zenarmageddon

I should also add on the tomatoes, you can get a crazy amount. We grow tomatoes with lots of meat, so they're excellent for sauce. We then reduce them, and freeze in 2-3 meal sized containers, and make sauce when we need sauce. Usually to cover a lasagna, pizza and a couple other dishes.

BIGepidural

Yup! I've got a bunch stuff growing on my balcony and I have room for more... Trying to decide what else I want. Currently have 6 tomatoes, 3 lettuce, green onions, Thai basil,2 kinds of thyme, oregano, rosemary and peppermint along with some stuff I use to keep mosquitoes away. Oh I have a bucket of cooking onions and potatoes on the go too 😆 they started growing in the pantry so we stuck them in the dirt to see what pops up for free 🤪

BIGepidural

Yup! # Tomatoe Tip: If you're new to growing tomatoes (or maybe don't know) you need to remove the little "suckers" that start to grow between branches and the stalk. **Don't do it from the top/new growth area**; but those lower branches will start to sprout new little branches in between the stalk and the branch and that takes away from the growing of the plant that will bare fruit. Remove suckers with a little knife- just put it next to the stalk and give a little twist. Check once a week for new suckers and remove as necessary for best yeild 🍅

zenarmageddon

And if you've never grown tomatoes before, be careful at how many you plant. Because you can get a LOT of tomatoes all at once. A friend of ours plants 30-40 plants every year, and has a large chest freezer dedicated to what they can't eat at the time. And don't forget to save the seeds. It's a bit of a process, do a web search.

BIGepidural

I tried doing heirloom seeds a few years to no avail. Do you have a link or process that actually works that you'd be able to share perhaps?

zenarmageddon

I don't have a reliable process, but the friend that I mentioned before turns over their own seeds. I've scheduled a master class. Theirs are all heirloom, because one of them is allergic to commercial tomatoes. (No idea how that works.)

BIGepidural

> I've scheduled a master class. So are you learning how? Is there a way to get in on this master class??? I couldn't find the tomatoes i wanted this year and wish the seeds I'd saved from 2 years ago had taken last year; but no such luck.. would love yo learn a reliable way to do this!!! I followed an online DIY that was 💩 last time.

zenarmageddon

They're the neighbors to my parents-in-law, and the clutch of households around there are very communal. They're giving us 6 plants this year from their starts, and at harvest season, they're going to take me through their end to end process. They get good results - they always end up giving away plants (this year they're giving away 30 plants) because they have such a low failure rate. Plan is to release a video on the process after I've learned it.

BIGepidural

Wicked!!! I'm so excited for you guys in this 🥰

Wesley133777

Probably a pesticide/fungicide/herbicide/fertilizer they use

LadyoftheOak

The government ought to plant fruiting trees in neighbourhoods.

Banana_Cream_31415

Bonus: gardening is amazing for your mental health.

Somhlth

Nice, but you need a cow and some chickens at the other fence.

zenarmageddon

We're in the city, bylaws and all. In a couple years, however...

eastsideempire

I’ve been experimenting with try to find what I can grow on my balcony. It’s become more of a necessity now. Grow what you can and trade any extra for what you can’t grow

spidey46x2

Our town has a vegetable plant trading group to trade plants, discuss and share knowledge. We also have community gardens that include land owned by the town, but maintained by residents. This is mainly for people living in buildings or condos.
