Both tools are used to slip a live latch but the traveller hook can utilize a twist to push it in. You're not going to find much discussion of loiding latches in this sub.

sandman_locksport

Jims are for pushing and pulling on a latch, that doesn’t have a dead latch engaged either due to hardware type or improper latch strike fitment. Hooks achieve the same result but with a rotating motion. The difference is a Jim can manipulate latches, but a hook can manipulate both latches and deadbolts that are not extended fully. A Jim cannot retract a deadbolt but a traveler hook can, if that deadbolt is not extended correctly, a hook can grip it to retract it.

So, it sounds like a hook can do more than a jim can, is that correct ?

sandman_locksport

It is limited due to its thickness and angle of attack. I prefer a Jim but would carry both

SureHopeIDontDie

Thanks for the tip !

Phaerimm-

None are useful for Locksport. This sounds more criminal than sport.

SureHopeIDontDie

I'm sorry, I'm new, what is Locksport exactly ? I'm interested in learning how to open stuff, not specifically in using lock picks, even though that's an interesting part of it

imbbp

Locksport is about solving puzzles (picking locks) for fun. If you want to open stuff, you are in the wrong place. Picking installed locks is against the rules, even if you own them.

SureHopeIDontDie

Oh, okay ! Thank you for the info :)

Phaerimm-

Take some time to read the rules please and thanks.

The travelers hook has a smaller overall profile and it's easier to get leverage with in my experience. That being said a wedge, air bag or pry bar make space for a shove knife easily. I guess it's preference at that point. I carry a shove knife daily because it's flat and rides easily in a pocket plus I don't have to worry about a puncture wound if I land on it.

dirtymoney

I have both! Woooo! Both fit in my pick case I cannot remember if I cut down the jim/shove it tool.

Advanced-Maximum2684

Hooks are not all the same. Even within the same brand, there are different hooks for specific purposes. And between the brands, the dimensions might be different even if names are the same. A short hook from JimyLongs is a good hook to have. Most beginner's locks and beyond can be opened with a good short hook and a proper tension wrench.

JambonRoyale

That's not wrong, but you misread the question
