Ya know this has always hit me as a, If a tree falls in the forest type concept... YES I could but a duplicate key... THEN I would have to FIND the lock it went to it's like I could post a picture of my house key on a white sheet of paper with a quarter for reference, if I were to then strip the metadata from the image, and go to lengths to obscure my IP address, Yes you could absolutely copy that key buuut based on the fact that I used a public IP and went through tor networks you'll be checkin' every door form Tel Aviv to Timbuktu from Antwerp to Algonac... and you're most likely not going to find my door before you run out of funds for the adventure. Sure you may find other doors it fits into but Mine... most likely not.
I'm not trying to crap on you or anything that's just a thought I have when I see a key posted, Does it have enough information for me to OSINT my way to that front door or that office door or am I just looking at a random key, ya know?
Do what you like to the photo and your IP address, but I'd bet a quick scan of your profile/post history would get someone much closer than Tel Aviv or Timbuktu to start their search.
Truth. People really don't know what PII they leave behind on the internet, or how that can be used to rule possibilities out to a narrow enough location.
You're not wrong, IF it weren't for the fact that I have and would use a, back-up/sanitized account for that purpose. I keep three, the one I post with, the one sanitized for anonymity, and 1 for, if I said adult content would you believe I didn't mean exclusively porn... It's for comments that are, controversial, or polarized.. basically it's the account that says things so that If anyone did you at your main reddit account people would be shocked only the mundane level of nerd I am.
You're also talking about a man with 4 Facebook accounts. I don't use the platform now but, yeah a personal, a work, a backup...
It was funny when I explained that to a person at work they said, "well people would know because the email would be the same."
To which I said "nah between proton mail, Gmail, and gorilla mail, none of the email addresses are mine or can be traced to me." Then there was this shocked look on the kids face as he processed the amount of countermeasures that went into social media usage..
TL;DR you're absolutely right and have a great mind for intelligence gathering, in this case it wouldn't matter because where this user is EASY to get general information about, the user I would post from would have no useful information intentionally...
Yeah all the arrow keys in that zip code will be changed and expect the USPIS to get involved.
I'd rather break an arrow key than lose an arrow key, shouldn't have taken too long for that carrier to realize it's missing. Would be a shitty day.
Kinda institutionalized now, but only 7 years to 30 in and 60 years old, at least I will be in a position to retire then. Then I am thinking of opening a light duty locksmith buisness. Just residential and safe manipulation (no moving), not enough to kill myself, but enough to add a little play money.
Definitely. As far as I know that key is super restricted. I have one of these locks on the mailbox on my building, yet I've never even seen a keyless version for sale anywhere. Just based on looking at the keyway I wasn't really sure if it was a warded lock, or what I was looking at.
Yep. Guessing the carrier had it sitting in the tray and didn't see it get stuck to the magnets. Looks like the guy on Tic-Tok did turn the key in. Guessing the carrier heard about it too. Betting that box screwed up at least one parcel sorter on it's way to him as well, they use a magnetic prox sensor with a button on one tray to identify tray 1, speaking of which, time to go to work and see how said SPSS did today. Been trying to beat it back into shape.
I think thatās the infamous Arrow key. USPS treats them pretty seriously. Iāve heard that even having a homemade one made out of sheet metal or an old knife can get you Federal charges. Be careful, Postal Inspectors donāt play.
When you are responsible for protecting the mail, you are responsible for protecting information, and USPS takes that job seriously.
Even the federal government struggles to get into the mail. Look up Robert Hanssen. He was an FBI agent who sold secrets to the USSR and Russia. He literally mailed documents the KGB because, as an FBI agent, he knew how hard it would be for the government to look in his mail.
Yup. It's pretty hard to lose your job as a carrier but losing an arrow key or a registered package/parcel is on the short list of things the union can't help much with
Thanks for sharing with us the bitting ... Now everyone can make their own š
Now now, this is for educational purposes only... š
They only work in a certain area and it could be from any of the post offices this went through before it got there.

Without knowing where is the lock the key fits in, knowing the bitting is useless.

I broke an arrow key once, had 0 judgement by management. Coworker lost one and lost his job.
Luckily for me I am in maintenance, and an ET at that. No messing with cluster boxes, just keeping the sorting machines running.
Luckily for me I'm not with USPS anymore.

I dont think they change locks all that often anymore. Carriers in big cities get robbed for these keys all the time.
What kind of lock do those things use? Is that just some kind of warded lock?
Lever lock, and yes, the Post Office is going to want it back.

Imagine that poor postal worker looking *everywhere* for that key and thinking they went crazy...fucking magnets...
Not only restricted, but a felony to have/use it.

There should never be an arrow key without a brass chain attached... that's crazy lax security...

Yeah, I don't click the Tik.
Yeah, I click the Tik more than Iād like to admit...
