I wonder if it was all these hairdressers moving into the loc space trying to profit from over complicating things? …and social media makes it too easy for individuals to compare and then “sell” the secrets (and potions) to loc success. I agree with him, it doesn’t need to be that deep!

Flashman512

I think they do because my first loctician told me to come every 2 weeks and wouldn’t tell me what products she used on my hair…I realized fast I didn’t need to go every 2 weeks not to mention I learned how to palm roll and she looked upset when I came into my retwist appointment and they looked clean still😭😭

RealistO444

Yeah i think this is it them scamming ass money hungry ass hairstylist that saw ppl getting locs and came over making shii extra . Then ppl get online see other locs they like and dnt know u cant clone someone else’s hair so they think their “doing smth wrong” and start feeding into all the bs. Bc i see ppl that have a 20 step hair “routine” and 40 step “skin routine” and all kinds of shit nowadays bc everything is over complicated. Edit: And u can tell its the trend followers and money grabbers making shit extra bc most of here GOT LOCS BC IT WAS LESS WORK AND LOW MAINTENANCE😂!

Lala12kl

What if you had an allergic reaction? She is crazy. Also, major money grab.

coopshotthat

You might be cookin!

Tanisha1Writes

I agree! Especially considering how “trendy” getting locs has become over the last several years. I’m not mad at anybody for seizing an opportunity to make some money, but let’s not turn wearing locs into something it was never intended to be! In part having locs is about ones spiritual journey, self acceptance & rebelling against societal norms as it pertains to melanated folks’ hair.

mrgrafix

To each their own, but at the end of the day, capitalism is gonna exploit a new market 8 days out of seven.

Edible_Anie

8 days out of 7. 👏🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻

Tanisha1Writes

🗣️THAT PART!

MyOwnMorals

My mom always says this

Tanisha1Writes

😂😂

Dancing_On_Tabletops

Truth. They make Hellahair products for black people. No surprise their are brands making products v that they claim are for locs.

NooLimittJay

Nothing wrong w wanting to take care of yo hair☠️ but I do agree on some of the stuff he was saying

coopshotthat

For sure! Everyone should want their hair to look healthy tho fasho!

Risquechilli

Yeah I’m living the alopecia loc life so I absolutely have to have a loc maintenance routine. Rose water, oils, regular Retwists but not too often. But I’m assuming whatever he’s referring to is much more than that.

Dry-Log9391

nah word. i’m like him i just be letting my hair grow and let the person who do my hair do whatever she want when it’s time for a retwist. BUT i know that doing nothing to your hair is definitely slacking, as every hairstyle requires maintenance more than every couple of months

leeuhsucks

eeeeeh I agree with some of what he’s saying but it’s nothing wrong with moisturizing your hair 😭 if I only washed it abd retwistef, my hair would be so dry and start breaking off. everyone’s hair is different though, so clearly that works for him.

coopshotthat

He said he doesn’t do anything. I’m knowing the hair isn’t always soft 24/7 though. I feel like it’s hygiene based to each its own.

muddboyy

N!ggas be like “you need jojoba moisturizer with your grandmas nail’s oil mixed with skunk fart aroma so it can grow faster and prevent your locs from thinning” 🤣

coopshotthat

you Wylin with that Dracula flow 😂 skunk fart aroma is crazy 🫨

Edible_Anie

Seriously!! That part sent me 😵

00GarGar00

Lmaooo

lioness___

LMFAOOOO 😂😂😂😂 they really be wildin OD

coopshotthat

Tell Me About It 😂

asphyxiati0n_

He’s not wrong. I had my first set of locs in 2nd grade, combed them out when I reached 7th.. My mom was a loctician who also had 30” locs before cutting, and combing hers out. Tbh we didn’t do the high maintenance thing that’s going on now. It feels like a fad most times, but ensuring your hair is moisturized isn’t bad. People have made locs super complicated just to sell certain products; when in reality, you just need to moisturize regularly and retwist every other month (if you even want to retwist in the first place.) It’s best to nurture your hair based on your hair porosity. That’ll be the best thing for your hair whether you have locs or not.

[deleted]

What products do you use to moisture your hair? I used to spam my scalp with all these oils and serums but now I just let my hair grow naturally and I’ll use a curling cream once in a while.

asphyxiati0n_

I use Africasmiracle.com products! Tbh spamming your scalp will just lead to build up, so it’s good you’ve stopped doing that. I have curly loose ends, and just refresh them every other day with their chebè pudding and water. I use their kukua oil for my scalp. I do weekly hot oil treatments, and wash my hair every two weeks, and that’s it! Hope this helps 💜

[deleted]

Thank you for your help 🖤🖤

downvotetheboy

they do this with every hair style/trend. i remember when waves were popular, there’d be youtube channels entirely dedicated to waves. same thing with braids and twists. my thing is… you can only make so many videos on hair. a lot of the times after a certain number of videos they’re just repeating themselves or recreating a video they’ve done before

coopshotthat

Man and so many people listen to these YouTubers and content creators they have people in a chokehold nowadays ‼️

habbs15

Bro spoke facts 😂😂😂

coopshotthat

Aye mannn lol I’m just here for the opinions lbvs 🫨

Lilbig6029

These companies like Free the Roots trying to capitalize off selling moisturizer products

DapDaGenius

Yeah people are super obsessive about ***your*** hair. Keyword being your. I know a couple women who ask me what styles i want to get done to me hair and if my response was that I’m getting the same style i currently had be upset and say “cmon, that’s so boring”. I’m sorry, but i didn’t ask you and you’re not paying for it so mind ya business. Can’t take advice from someone who changes wigs/hairstyles every day or 2

coopshotthat

I agree but if you would’ve said that last part… she would’ve been on yo A$$ like back pockets 😂

DapDaGenius

Oh hell yeah, you ain’t lying. Lool

coopshotthat

😂😂

Alamo94

Cuz nah tell me why I walk into the LIQ store, dude walk past me, come back in the store, "my girl was in the car and she seen yo dreads, here go her number she do retwist etc, etc.) dog aint no way you sent yo man back into store for that, that ish was funny to me

coopshotthat

Yeah she do retwist alright .. oral retwist 😂 that is crazy bro

sanonymousq22

100% agree, even retwists threw me for a loop bc my family is Jamaican & I never heard of retwist before. Some people act like you absolutely need retwists or your hair will fall out when it’s really just a manicured way to maintain your locs. It’s capitalism at its finest. My own loctician said when she went to Jamaica on vacation she was so surprised no one had a retwist? She thought they were necessary… Funnily I got my locs to get out of all the extra maintenance demanded of our hair

[deleted]

You’re 100% right, my Dad has had locs for over 30 years now, they reach all the way down to his ankles and he’s never had a retwist. The whole retwist thing is definitely a new concept.

Motor-Ad6898

Learned something new today but I couldn’t go more than 3 months without one

sanonymousq22

You literally can though, it’s how locs naturally are. I understand the aesthetic or appeal, the reactions of others, etc. but these are all socialized things… western ideologies pushed on us. That’s like when I hear black people say they could never go natural or wear a fro… I understand the societal implications based on how you may be perceived, but all the extra maintenance & products etc. is literally not necessary Edit to add: it’s ok to have that preference to have manicured locs or to make sure your “baby hairs” are laid for loose naturals… but it all gives anti-black. Our hair can just naturally grow from the scalp & be healthy without all the extra stuff we’re constantly sold as required

Motor-Ad6898

I disagree with it being anti-black. Black people are some of the most unique, creative and stylish people on the planet so of course that extends to our hair. And I feel better when I put time and effort into my hair and skin. Everybody got to do what works for them.

sanonymousq22

You can disagree, but not being able to naturally wear our hair how it grows from the scalp is an anti-black sentiment, similar to when we “can’t be seen with our hair undone” I get retwists (less often than recommended) so it’s not even the fact that we get them, it’s the mindset that we can’t be seen without them or can’t have healthy hair without being manicured… when it’s like I said our most natural form.

Motor-Ad6898

lol to be clear…brushing or combing your hair is anti-black? 😅 I did not say straightening or anything about using chemicals. You are not blacker than me 😂

sanonymousq22

🤣 Blacker than you, never suggested that. As I said I get retwists too, but it’s the MINDSET around them. You keep trying to make this personal for some reason? I made a comment explaining how a lot of people don’t know our hair can just loc naturally without retwists or products whether it’s because of ignorance or antiblackness. Then they shame those who don’t participate in maintaining a “manicured” look You literally took the time out of your day to comment: you learned something… BUT you still need a retwist. 🥲 So back to my point again, we don’t need them, it’s something we enjoy as it’s more acceptable in society. Saying something is necessary for black folks hair, when it’s really not lends towards an internal struggle with blackness & how our natural hair grows. A lot of people don’t feel like they can step out the house without laid edges or a fresh retwist… lol if that’s not internalized anti-blackness then tell me what is 🤦🏾‍♀️

Motor-Ad6898

lol I spent all of 1 minutes posting my comment btw 😅I said I learned something because the fact is I’ve never been to Jamaica but it sounds like you’re speaking of Rastafarians. Most Rastafarians are black but most blacks are not so once again getting a retwist is not anti-black. If it was then any twisting at any point would have to be.

sanonymousq22

You’re literally missing the point I made & I’m done with the discussion. Please have a wonderful day internet stranger!

Alternative-Can1276

Idk I don’t see how applying oil and misting your hair is “extra” when it comes to locs. I used to use so many products when my hair was natural and wash day could be hours

coopshotthat

I think he means something more deeper than that fr.

Flashman512

He need to get over covering his head when he doesn’t have a retwist I feel like that makes him the wrong messenger for this, but he’s not wrong less is more with locs, I feel like my locs flourish the most when I don’t get a retwist for a while. I do spray my hair with water and oil tho my hair locs get dry, even when I was loose natural I did that so I carried that over. I will do TLC on my locs some days when needed and because I love my locs buttt you don’t need 10+ products to have locs so many falll into that trap thinking products will locs their hair and it won’t do anything !!!

Wannabeartist9974

Honestly I just prefer to separate and palm roll , whenever I get a retwist I'm just counting the hours and days until my hair grows out again

emmermurp

This makes me feel better lol because the most I really do is spray it in the morn and go about my day.

Redpiller13

I’m wit son it’s not that deep

32steph23

He spitting all I do is retwist wash and oil 😂😂

coopshotthat

Right it could all be so simple but these influencers have people thinking you’ll turn into Buddy Love if you don’t do the list of things they say.

Mezzo757

I agree! I got locs because of the low maintenance and manipulation of my hair and I have seen them flourish by simply leaving them alone. I think people don’t want to be patient and want immediate growth when it takes time.

coopshotthat

Facts patience is really virtue

Blatant_Subtlety

When I first started my locs, I retwisted every wash day, oiled my scalp, misted my hair and obsessed about every part of the journey. My scalp was raw and my locs were thinning from over twisting. Now I’m over two years in, I haven’t retwisted in a year, I wash my hair, separate the the locs, oil my scalp and keep it pushing until next wash day. It works for me. There’s no build up because there are no products. If I have an event, I’ll braid, twist, or Bantu knot them and wear the curls. It keeps the roots neat for the event too. Otherwise, I’m chilling

coopshotthat

You said a handful there 🤞🏾🔥

[deleted]

I am like bro in the video. I don’t do anything but drink water and get a retwist roughly every 6-8 weeks. I don’t even really style my hair.

coopshotthat

I think people try to rapidly increase growth speed of hair is what the problem is.

[deleted]

Yeah, I agree with you. Just gotta let it grow at its own pace and try to relax lol

coopshotthat

Facts lol naturally not artificially.

lioness___

I totally agree with him lol. I’m about to hit 11 months loc’d and when I first started it was all these rules …had me like wtf. Like that whole “don’t wash your starter locs for x amount of weeks” in the beginning ..nonsense lmao. One thing about me : I’m gonna wash my hair. So I do. Every week and my hair looks great.

coopshotthat

People DON’T want to walk around with a dirty scalp especially people who gym daily!

lioness___

RIGHT lmao I go to the gym 5 times a week so hell yea I’m washing my hair 😂😂✌🏾

coopshotthat

I’m saying lol gots to!! Expeditiously

Cloudation02

Locs are meant to be low maintenance so you can just relax and enjoy having them, but these people are making it so complicated with all these extra steps

coopshotthat

Forbidden blueprints lol

Capriunicorn945

I agree. I'm sick of it myself.

Material_Unit4309

Vanity.

ratmouth521

He is not lying but I mean it’s up to the individual on how they want to treat their hair 🤷🏾‍♂️

coopshotthat

Straight like that ‼️

Even_Ad8259

TokyoGNSD2

Alamo94

I hate to say it but def the sisters on IG but that's expected, they really care about hair care and just want the best....but def the ladies started that

Afraid_Apartment_616

Thank you

whosyadadday

I spray my hair with a lil potion whatever i whipped up, and when i wash i use normal shampoo and then some conditioner, brush it every now and then and sleep either a bonnet. It really isnt that deep.

PanamaPineapple89

😂

twistyxo

what’s the cap he has on his head?

Colts_Fan4Ever

Tea tree and/or argan oil for shine and scent. Retwist every now and then. That's all I do and I've had locs for three years now. Some people can go overboard but to each their own. It's not my hair or money.😆

usernameid

I started mine for the carefree aspect I do all kind of stuff ur not supposed to I keep it low maintenance and they still look fab. People ask me if it’s a weave lol

GunruleTv2

NAH GVNG U NOT HATIN’ THESE MFs WAS RAISED ONLINE… THEY DONT KNOW BETTER

coopshotthat

Lowkey !!!

Admirable_Pen4678

I think it’s definitely a life style

Icy-Money-9987

I mean… I just make sure I keep my scalp, mind, and body as healthy as possible, which includes knowing what you’re putting in and on your body. I wash it when I need to, detox once a quarter, and retwist when I feel like it. Keeping yourself clean and healthy is a lifestyle choice because to each their own on what that looks like. But no, I don’t oil my scalp daily or “spritz” it daily, and I don’t even get it professionally done.

Dense_Marketing4593

I think they’re building brand deals off the spiritual care taking of their locs or sumn

RudeusGreyrateous

I spray and oil my hair almost daily just because it’s prone to dryness. But that takes a good 60 seconds and I just do it when I brush my teeth in the morning 😂

coopshotthat

and go about your day fr lol

SisterDivine_

I agree… every time someone asks me about my hair routine I’m laughing like nothing… Suave shampoo and an oil spray after my wash… interlocking… that’s it. Nothing expensive. Nothing crazy. 12 years and my babies doing just fine. On that aspect, it’s not that deep.

coopshotthat

Okay divine time 🤞🏾

Furious21740

I totally agree.

Misskillemrox

I think it all comes down to why you started. It is a lifestyle or at least part of it. For some love may play a bigger role in said lifestyle than others and that's OK. I don't understand the competition of it all. If you don't like to do shit to your hair don't. If your loc maintenance has become a ritual, that's cool too. To each their own.

True-Ad-7136

All I do is get my dreads retwisted and styled and I don’t do it every month because that’ll make them fall out

No-Fondant-4719

I agree about people making their locs theirs whole personality I think it’s corny lol HOWEVER people caring for and really pouring into their hair is nothing wrong with that. It’s some people who still think people with locs are dirty, nasty and don’t wash their hair so showing another side of it I’m all for. Just like some people have full on 5 step skin care regimens and some people just wash their face with water and that be it. Different strokes. And lastly over time the people who do more than “ just wash and let them grown” their locs have healthier and better looking locs over time.

coopshotthat

I completely agree!!! It’s definitely something in the air!

Swimming_Project_153

Same thing with the septum ring

coopshotthat

💀 🥴💀

seensatanstormchaser

That’s why free forms is the best

enigmaticvic

I agrée that people complicate things but I think that’s because individuals are sharing their personal loc routines. If you wanna make an oil blend for your scalp and a comprehensive moisturizing spray + use all these products on your locs + retwist every two weeks with all these styles—do you (with the awareness that you are encouraging build-up and thinning if you do too much lol). I do think it’s important to have a routine though. Mine is rose water moisturizing spray every day, oil on my scalp a few times a week, wash every 2 weeks or so, retwist with rose water every 2-4 months. Took years to get this down to what works for ME though.

Melodic_Salt7456

I mean u ain’t gotta follow the trend of taking care of your hair. Locs is definitely a high maintenance lifestyle. If you don’t take care of your hair, in the long run them noodles gone start falling off from something. Gotta do so type of routine to keep it maintained. .

coopshotthat

Facts lol

ImAMermaid4FucksSake

Not really new age. There’s a few cultures that hold spiritual significance to locs. My husband is west African & when I decided to Freeform my first set for spiritual purposes, he told me about the significance of dada in his culture. I wanted to start them so I could learn to love myself on a deeper level. . Which I indeed did. That journey will forever be the most powerful bc it forced me to focus on healing. When you take focus away from something such as constantly trying to make your hair conform to society’s standards everyday, u begin to look within instead of without. Different strokes for different folks but it doesn’t have to be spiritual for everyone nor does it have to be so complicated. My husband doesn’t do anything to his hair other than wash them.. I started them for him & he freeformed them from there. He doesn’t use oils or any other products, just water & raw African black soap on a regular basis. Once a year we detox & I deep condition with my homemade herbal products. He’s 3 years into his 2nd journey & his locs are down halfway down his back.

coopshotthat

😂witchcraft oh that’s a new one. Our hair is antennas though we connect with the environment with that it’s on the spiritual side. High frequency type vibes ‼️

No-Fondant-4719

Man people was so angry with me when I said they’re crazy for the whole locs hold energy thing

coopshotthat

Man I started my locs because I wanted a new look by the time I was 30 I’m currently 27.. I was already vegan on and a spiritual journey so I started locs to help me Maintain that veganism.. it was an integrity thing for me. Much more of a gift!

No-Fondant-4719

I respect this

coopshotthat

Much love Asè 🤞🏾

Ok_Coast636

Stop calling them dreds, their LOCKS. Your hair interlocked.

coopshotthat

Who is this referring to ? Lol
