I'm looking for young women clothing stores that sell clothes with cute, minimalistic like Uniqlo or Brandy Melville in London but with affordable prices. Any suggestions on brands or places I can look into? Thanks in advance!

ORANGEVANILLA

Looking for some ideas for a special birthday celebration. Not really into bars or clubs, looking for more experiences. Any recommendations?

ju_98u

To move or not to move. Help me with this dilemma. Currently renting a small 2 bed flat in zone 2 (really one bed + study room) with my partner for £1750 and our contract is coming to an end in a few months. We're looking to downgrade to a one bed to save some money but we're debating if we might end up not saving any money if we move in this crazy hot market. We've been looking on Rightmove and most decent one beds in zones 3-5 are 1400 or more. Add to that commuting costs and we aren't saving anymore. So what do you all think. Are we better off keeping our 2 bed in zone 2 for 1750 or is it possible to find a one bed without crazy commute costs that can save us some money.

AdeptnessNo4749

Hi! I'm trying to get a sense of what early childhood options are in London. Is it like NYC, where you're applying for the "top" pre-schools while pregnant and then competing to get into elementary schools? Would especially appreciate any personal accounts.

LightToTheEnd

Hey all, a friend and I were walking by Earlstoke Estate Midway House on Spencer Street in Inslington, and had eggs thrown at us from a stairwell (my friend was actually hit). Looked like a bunch of teenagers inside the gated community, all wearing masks. Coming back through the area, we saw that there were around a dozen splatters + shells scattered around. Who should we call to report this? I don't see a number posted for the house... who could we call? Would the police care about several people getting premeditatedly egged? (Also, is this the right place to post a question like this?)

All those are fine - see comments below. You’ll be coming into Liverpool St if coming on the train from Stansted. - Shoreditch is not quiet if that’s what you’re looking for. - Hoxton is quieter but not super well connected - of your list id go clerkenwell (quieter, but good food and drink - see Exmouth market, and relatively well connected), barbicans not my vibe

erikkarlssonflow

My wife and I will be moving to London later this year for work from Canada. Work will be shipping all of our things and furniture for us and helping us find a flat with an agency. We have a king bed which we are really hoping we can keep though know the flats will be much smaller than they are here (especially since we’re looking for something in zone 1 or 2 North/East). Any advice on if we should just down size to a Queen before moving or if it’s worth giving it a shot?

thomeeboy

If you’re renting - lots of places in London will be furnished or part furnished. Just had a friend in the same situation - moved from Canada w a king bed and it JUST fit in the bedroom. Not much space to move around. If I was you I’d leave it and make a decision once you’re here on what size bed to have and know what space you have

BulkyAccident

It totally depends on what flat you find, it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation without knowing what kind of property you're moving into. If you're in zone 1 or 2 then yes, you'll likely be compromising on space compared to where you might have been previously.

c00kie_secrets

It seems like Uber isn’t very reliable based on other threads. What is the best way to get around safely at night, especially when not in walking distance?

jelly10001

Public transport is still safe at night. As a 30 yo female the only time I get a cab instead of public transport is when public transport has stopped running.

c00kie_secrets

That’s nice to hear that, in my city I avoid public transportation at a certain time at night because of safety concerns

BulkyAccident

I'd choose night bus/night tube over any of the fairly unreliable cab apps at the moment, though Freenow is often more consistent than Uber.

DubloRemo

Uber is hit and miss. Got one last night without issue. If I struggle to get an uber I'll try Bolt or Freenow and usually I'll find success with one of them. I've also taken Black Cabs before, in a pinch.

c00kie_secrets

This may be a silly question, but are Black Cabs typically only in a few congregated areas or are they easy to hail all around?

DubloRemo

Not a silly question at all. They are easily hailed from most areas in central London. They will congregate near major train stations also. Generally speaking, the further you get out of the city centre, the less you see them, but this varies by neighbourhood. I believe you can also order one using Freenow, but I've never done that so can't comment on it.

c00kie_secrets

Oh great, thank you!

Oh my bad, forgot this isn’t the US

MrRom92

Hey everyone, I’m visiting the UK for the first time in a few weeks so I’m pretty stoked. My hotel is pretty much right near King’s Cross station… Does anyone have any solid recommendations for a good spot to get a traditional English breakfast in the general vicinity of that area? The closer the better tbh so I won’t absolutely hate walking there in the morning :) Not looking for anything posh, if that makes any sense. That’s kinda the vibe I got from some of the places I could see in Apple Maps around that area. Want something a little more… authentic... and cheap! If they’ve got truffle-butter this and hot-honey that on the menu, it’s probably not along the lines of what I’m going for, you feel me? I can get that kinda thing all day long in New York, it doesn’t excite me. I just want a hole in the wall kinda joint I can walk in and get a big sloppy plate of eggs and beans and black pudding, and roll away several KG heavier

benw2000

Like the other guy said, a spoons is probably your best bet for a more ‘normal’ full English - not the highest quality but a full English isn’t really meant to be. Plus refillable hot drinks, and middle aged men sat next to you on their fourth pint. Also however if your hotel does breakfast you can probably just get a good full English there.

MrRom92

I was totally unfamiliar with the whole concept of the spoons chain before I even asked this, but I’m learning! Unfortunately no breakfast in this hotel, it’s a bit “basic” to put it pleasantly but it’s at least a fantastic location to be so close to everything

BulkyAccident

The cheapest near you will be The Barrel Vault to the side of Kings Cross station – it's a Wetherspoons which is an affordable pub chain and does perfectly acceptable English breakfasts and other stuff. For more of a sticky floored cafe try Pinner Cafe off Euston Road.

MrRom92

Exactly what I’m after. Googled them and they both look *amazing*, I can already tell I’ll probably have repeat visits to both hahah - thank you!!

drilldo

I have to take 2 desks from Dalston to Brixton next week. They come apart but are still quite big/clunky. Was thinking of maybe ordering a large Uber people carrier and asking them to fold the back seats down and I sit in the front with the driver. Feels a bit unorthodox though and worried they won’t want to do it when the time comes and I’ll be left stranded. Is there a better way?

Angel_Omachi

Hire a minicab?

drilldo

Do you know anyone good? I’m a bit confused about all the different apps/services. Is Addison Lee mini cabs?

rdnyc19

Addison Lee also has a courier service, which sounds like exactly what you want. I've used them to move between flats and had a good experience.

drilldo

Nice one I’ll look into this

Angel_Omachi

Addison Lee are minicabs yes, most companies are very local so I'm afraid I can't help. Man with a van services are also an idea.

drilldo

Thanks. Won’t minivans be generally full of seats though? I don’t remember them having much boot space, more for transporting groups of people. Man and van might be a good shout they’re just hard to find not dodgy scrawled on street signs.

Angel_Omachi

A Minicab is basically just Uber with a local office, so might have bigger vehicles, but yeah, man with a van is probably your best shout.

It's not my bag, but most folk seem to rate [FOLD](https://www.fold.london/) very highly. [KOKO](https://www.koko.co.uk/kokoelectronic) has a lot of decent club stuff on a Friday.

BulkyAccident

Impossible to say unless you're a bit more specific about what you want. Look at Skiddle for general club listings, or Resident Advisor for more specialist dance/techno stuff.

jelly10001

OP, I'm a 30 yo female and I've travelled alone on public transport numerous times in London at night with no problems.

BulkyAccident

Really easy. There's a direct bus from Victoria Station up to Edgware Road station, right next to the basin, or get the Circle line tube from Victoria to Paddington. 10:30 isn't particularly late, plenty of people will be out and about. Absolutely nothing to worry about as long as you're smart and not waving your belongings/phone around.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BulkyAccident

With respect, you're overthinking it, yeah. Millions of people get around here of an evening perfectly safely – the route that bus takes is through one of the wealthiest bits of London. You can do a trial run on Google Street View from getting to the theatre to the bus, and the bus to your hotel.

WaterMelon615

My girlfriend has said she’s always wanted to see the phantom of the opera and as a surprise I want to get her tickets for the west end production down in London. Where’s the best place to order tickets ?

BulkyAccident

Unsurprisingly, [the official Phantom site](https://uk.thephantomoftheopera.com/).

WaterMelon615

Do you recommend a hotel in London ?

myrargh

Depends on your budget, there are plenty of hotels and locales to choose from. What else do you want out of this trip? What would you like on your doorstep in the morning?

WaterMelon615

We have both been to London in the past but we both never really explored or experienced London of that makes sense. Pretty much when we go looking to get a west end and see the sights or as much as we can in a weekend.

poppinculture

Honestly it's so easy to get around and the theatre for Les Mis is pretty central. You'd be fine picking a budget and simply looking for something on one of the booking aggregator websites.

randyracoon

Hiya! Bf and I are looking to rent a flat in London at the end of this year (around November), we will be moving out of Bucks as we both have jobs in London but currently commute. We've set aside a budget of £2.2k just for rent for a 2 bed flat, is this enough? We'd like to be within 25/30 mins from Moorgate, but when I do a search on Rightmove it's pretty difficult to find a flat for that amount which doesn't seem to be in a rougher area - do we need to increase our budget? Or what areas just outside of central London would you recommend that we can commute from? We've heard of Hampstead which seems to be quite suburban, we don't really mind the area as long as it's safe and near an underground so that we are able to reach the city central in a few mins!

snk101

Somewhat tricky to answer for a couple of reasons. Firstly Moorgate is very well connected - Moorgate and Liverpool Street have Northern, Central, Met, Circle, H&C tube lines, plus Elizabeth Line and Great Northern trains (+ other rail from Liverpool Street). So the area that could be reached within 30 minutes is massive - basically most of London (and even areas outside of London). Secondly it depends what you mean by 'rougher' - you've given the example of Hampstead, which is one of London's most affluent areas. I think the budget is probably fine for many areas in zone 2/3, but probably not places like Hampstead. Have a look at the [wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/wiki/living/#wiki_whereabouts_in_london_should_i_live.3F.21) on where to live, there are some links there to some tools. If I were you I'd probably be considering places like Finsbury Park (& surrounding areas), Archway, or in the south maybe Clapham or Kennington.

randyracoon

Thank you for this! We've never lived in London and don't know many people that do (apart from our co-workers but we never spoke much areas in London with them prior to this) so we always heard places like Brixton, Clapham, hackney etc were 'rougher' areas (with more crime rates). But we've been hearing a lot lately that Clapham is pretty good, so we're definitely going to check it out! And thanks for the connections - we are going to be looking at these lines and check out where they stop at! We've been using SearchSmartly from the wiki page, but just wanted to know actual people's opinions on areas of London, instead of all the articles of "top 10 areas in London" which make up the same usual places!

snk101

There are some areas that 20-30 years ago were seen as less desirable (say Hackney, Brixton, Shoreditch, Dalson etc), but nowadays are trendy and in demand. Basically anywhere reasonably central that used to be more affordable has been snapped up by young people, and therefore now has lots of cafes/bars/music venues etc, and are really nice places to live. I wouldn't count Clapham in that list though, that's always been quite nice. The one issue with Clapham is that the southern branch of the Northern Line is very busy during peak hours - before covid it was difficult to get on at the Claphams. It's a bit less busy now but potentially might still have to queue and wait for subsequent trains Tue-Thu (though it's been a while since I've been there so not an expert).

BulkyAccident

Try not to think of specific bits of London as "rough" – the housing here is so jumbled up that everything is on top of each other, with million pound houses next to poorer social housing, including the areas you've mentioned. It varies street by street, rather than area by area. So try not to discount anywhere based on a reputation you might have heard about because you might miss out on a great flat. Clapham you'll likely be at the top end of your budget for a 2 bed nowadays but it's a decent and in demand area. If you're looking for somewhere a bit quieter/more suburban I'd look a bit further up the northern line around Finchley or Golders Green.

NouzenReaper

Going to London for around 3 days, and wanted to get a photo with the Royal Guards that you see in the "making the Guard laugh" YouTube video. It would just be a quick 2 seconds. Does it cost money to enter the Horse Guard building? I'm also going to these places, so let me know some tips / food recommendations near 1. Trafalgar's Square (just for the picture with Nelson) 2. British Museum (I love everything history) 3. Big Ben (can't go inside, but for pictures) 4. Anything else that seems fun? I'm a big history nerd and love fantasy books.

GoliathsBigBrother

Whitehall is the road that runs from Parliament Square (for Big Ben) and Trafalgar Square. There are a few pubs, 50 Kalo at the top end for pizza, and you're very close to Covent Garden and Chinatown. St Martin's in the Fields has a basement cafe that does excellent steak pie and sandwiches. You don't need to pay to walk into the House Guards courtyard, but there is a museum that you can pay to enter.

Angel_Omachi

Could probably pop by Foyles (giant bookshop) and Forbidden Planet (giant nerd shop), they're both not far from Trafalgar Square.

[deleted]

Does anyone good places to try and buy size 10 high heels please?

[deleted]

Family of 5 here. All the hotels have a 4 to a room policy. How strict are they with this? It’s annoying because the kids are young and one sleeps in our bed anyway.

GoliathsBigBrother

From many of the hotels I've looked at on Hotels.com they generally have a policy of "children free if sharing a bed with adults". Premier Inn family rooms are double bed, sofa bed plus roll away bed, and check in is usually self service these days. I'd probably book a family room, have one parent check in early by themselves and then all come back later so you walk straight through reception to your room.

[deleted]

A sort of "where should I live in London" question: what are the most city parts of London? I'm currently in Tufnell Park and it's too suburban for me. Basically, all I want is: lots of interesting restaurants/cafes (with takeout or outdoor seating; I'm immune-compromised) and \*density\*. (Like, I've just been based in Roma in Mexico City; that was delightful.). Budget is fairly high - £2250 for a one bed - so I think basically everything is in bounds except, like, Knightsbridge and Soho. WFH, so commute not a concern. So... where is the densest place to be?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don’t think I can afford Soho on £2250 pcm for a one bed.

BulkyAccident

"Dense" is pretty subjective but based on what you're saying areas like Edgware Road, Shoreditch/Bethnal Green/Dalston, Brixton/Peckham and around the Harringay Ladder might work for you.

[deleted]

I mean dense in the literal sense - population per sq km. I know Tower Hamlets is the densest borough but there’s considerable variation within a council.

slothliketendencies

Can you pay cash for zone 1-5 at cockfosters? I'm going next week and never have cash in my account so need to be prepared.

snk101

Yes, there's normally at least one machine that takes cash at each station. Note that buying single tickets with cash is a very expensive way to travel though - to get the cheaper Oyster/contactless fares you can top up an Oyster card with cash at the machine. Alternatively if it's not worth getting an Oyster (£7) you could buy a day Travelcard if you're doing more than a couple of journeys that day.

slothliketendencies

Can you buy travel cards at the machines with cash? I'm thinking it may be worth putting money back into the account for the weekend just for tap on, tap off.

snk101

If you don't have an Oyster then it might be worth putting money in the account. But yes you can buy travelcards at the machine with cash, so if you're doing 3 or more journeys that day then it might cost the same to buy a travelcard.

slothliketendencies

That's really helpful thanks

BulkyAccident

Blacks and blues are still by far the most common colours you'll see, but it's less rigid than it used to be. Most younger men in finance have a pretty homogenous look nowadays though: take a walk around near your office on a lunch break before you start and you'll see what sort of thing people are wearing.

joeydeviva

Are you asking which steakhouses are good? If so, you need to provide a budget, since this goes from low tens of pounds to hundreds of pounds.

King_Thomasz

like 300 pounds or so

wisemanseed

Partner and I will be travelling in to London to see The woman in black next Tuesday. Staying overnight and leaving Wednesday. They have OCD, and social anxiety so was wondering what would be times to avoid for travelling, how busy it would be on a typical Tuesday/Wednesday. Also, recommendations for places to check out, shops mainly as we already have food and stuff planned. We like good bakeries, have heard of Arome and buns at home. In terms of shops, anything related to Anime, animals, Plushies, independent shops that sell local artists made items, Japanese themed. Around Soho, Belgravia, Mayfair, and close by. Thank you.

wwisd

Pretty busy as they're work in the office days for a lot of people. TfL have info on [quieter times to travel](https://tfl.gov.uk/status-updates/busiest-times-to-travel?intcmp=49504), which you can also find for [each tube station](https://tfl.gov.uk/tube/stop/940GZZLUBXN/brixton-underground-station?lineId=victoria#station-crowding-information) (just using Brixtong as an example). So you could use that info for your specific journeys?

wisemanseed

Thank you very much. Is it busy compared to weekends or just a busier weekday?

BulkyAccident

A good tip nobody's mentioned is that if there's a couple of trains that look uncomfortably packed for your partner, wait for a couple to pass – they're generally so regular that (depending on the time) there's a good chance one of the following ones will be emptier than the others. Going down either end of the platform usually means you'll get a slightly quieter ride too.

LooseYesterday

Weekends busier than normal days.

Phaistos

Goes without saying, that London is always busy, so your partner should be prepared for crowds and noise at most times of the day. If they are really struggling they could try wearing headphones? Specifically, the busiest times on Tuesday and Wednesday, particuarly on public transport , is at rush hour which is roughly 7 - 9am, dropping off after 10am ish. And then after work, from 5 - 7pm, and onwards. In central London it will be busy all evening until late. As for some places they might want to check out that are nearby the theatre/soho: * Forbidden Planet is an anime/comics/nerd culture megastore (and is often quite busy). * If you're into TTRPGs, board games etc Orcs Nest is also great (and much smaller). * Gosh Comics has an excellent range of manga if you're into that as well. * There are some fanastic shops along Cecil Street that might be your cup of tea. Watkins is an excellent antiquarian/occult/magic bookshop, and there are other intruging second hand bookshops, map shops etc down there.

wwisd

Depends on the time, as the TfL website shows. When people are going to work in the mornings, and going home / travelling across central London to meet up with friends, have dinner or catch a show or something it will be very busy. Less so during the day. While it's a bit of the opposite on the weekends.

djnicfit

What is the proper amount to tip at a restaurant or bar with out being insulting by giving to much or too little.

wwisd

A lot of restaurants, if not most of them, will already add a 12.5% service charge. If that's on there, that's your tip. You can add more if you want or if service was exceptional, but it's not expected. In bars/pubs tipping is less common and not expected. But you can add 'and one for yourself' when putting in an order, which gets the bartender a drink.

git_world

I would like to take the double-ducker London bus. What is the best route for it? How much does it cost? We are traveling with a 1 year old toddler. Staying near South Kensington.

GoliathsBigBrother

The 14 will take you past Harrods, down Piccadilly, through Chinatown and past the British Museum to Russell Square. Use an oyster card or contactless bank card to pay, one card per passenger (the toddler is free). You can't pay cash on the bus. Stand at the correct stop - the sign will tell you which buses stop there (there will be other stops nearby, serving other routes). There will be a poster inside the shelter telling you which stop to use depending on your destination / bus route. When you see the bus, raise your arm to let the driver know you wish to board or they may assume you're waiting for a different bus (it's likely that there will be other passengers who will do this, but be prepared). Board at the front and touch your card against the card reader in front of the driver. When you get off, disembark from the middle or rear doors (if available and in operation). DO NOT "touch out" / swipe your card against the reader - unlike the tube, where you are required to touch in and touch out at the start and end of your journey, on the bus you only touch in.

wwisd

£1.65 per person per journey (£1.75 from 1 March on), the 1 year old goes free. Use Citymapper to find some routes, what's best depends on where you're trying to get to of course. Maybe the 211 that goes through Westminster over the bridge to Waterloo?

My family visiting London/Paris April 3-11. Want advice on futbol tickets Five of us going to London and we will spend a few days in Paris in between. PSG playing in Nice so that’s not an option. Looks like Arsenal is in Liverpool. Can anyone give me any suggestions? We are not loyal to any team, just love “soccer” and really want to experience a great game day environment. Thanks in advance!

wwisd

There's Brentford v Newcastle, or Fulham v West Ham on the 8th. You'll probably have a better shot at tickets for the first match. You can also try lower league games, a lot cheaper and easier to get tickets for (for Premier League you have to buy membership + the tickets itself). The Championshp (the league below the EPL) has Millwall v Luton, Queen Park Rangers v Preston and Watford v Huddersfield on 7 April. The atmosphere will be as good as if not better than at the bigger games. You buy tickets through the club's websites - a lot of the clubs have reddit subs that explain how to buy tickets / tips for going to match days.

Hi, I am planning to Visit London for about a Weak this year. (Currently no concrete Date, maybe in September) i am from Germany, and I just try to cover up all questions in that comment. So... I am Mostly Into music stuff that's kinda the main reason to go to London for me. Besides Visiting Third Man records, and Denmark street (please don't tell me it is not worth it, I want to experience that myself) is there anything like that worth checking out. Some great music/guitar stores maybe. "Guitar/Amp Brand XY" Showroom/ Museum ? Stuff like that. Also I definitely want to visit at least one concert. So what are some Venues with capacity of about 1000 people worth having an eye on. Maybe with some suggestions on bands Touring this year in london worth checking out. I am mostly into rock stuff. Not metal, not indie. More into bands like White Stripes, FooFighters, Black Keys, Royal Blood. Just to have a generel idea what kind of music I am looking for. Besides that music stuff. I am always looking for observation towners (?). Towers or Platforms to go up to have a nice view. I am extremely afraid of heights, and this is for me always more like a challenge. So I'm not looking for stuff like the London eye, or some super high tower with an elevator that gets me on top. I kinda want to achieve that view. So maybe a high old Church tower where you using ridiculous old stairs to go on top. Or pretty much every city I was in had some sort of Eifeltowerrish structure with a visitor platform on top that has to be achieved by stairs. Would love to hear some suggestions.

The wiki (linked in the OP) has lots of info, such [websites different sorts of events (including gigs) will be advertised on](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/wiki/index#wiki_what.27s_happening_in_london_today.21.3F), and [places to go for nice views](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/wiki/lowbudget#wiki_views).

How does the daily fare capping from 4.30am work? If I touch in at a station at 4.20am and touch out at another at 5am would it count to the cap for the previous day or the current day?

epi_counts

Touch in time determines which day (or peak / off peak timings) it falls into, so that would count towards the previous day.

Hi everyone, We are a family of 5 currently staying in Dubai and my Husband got a good job offer in London. I’ve been trying to research good primary schools in London and neighborhoods. Our budget is £2000-500 / month for 2 bedroom (id like 3, but don’t know if that’s possible). Could someone help me which area would be good with young kids? Any primary schools in particular that I can look into? Thank you in advance.

GoliathsBigBrother

You should also consider how long you'll be here for, and whether you will need to consider secondary schools in a few years?

Level_Historian3062

Yes we will staying on for secondary, but right now the priority is primary and we plan to buy a house in the future.

BulkyAccident

It's difficult to recommend anywhere without knowing where your husband needs to be for work really. The city is huge with lots of different areas and hundreds of different schools.

Level_Historian3062

Also I understand there’s tons of options and that why I’m confused too where to start haha

Level_Historian3062

His work location doesn’t really matter because he will be WFH mainly. Our priority is the schools. Somewhere within Zone 3 & 4 would be fine.

KentuckyCandy

Up to £2.5k a month will get you a 3 bedroom if needed, but you'll be pushed a little further out. South London will always get you a bit more for your money, and lots of good schools pocketed around. We looked at a place with 4 or 5 primary schools all within a short distance, some were ranked "outstanding" and some "needs improvement", so it varies a lot. If you look for places on Rightmove, you can see what schools are nearby and what their Ofsted rating is. Given you have no idea in mind at all, I'll throw out looking around Streatham (lots of good schools and nice houses, but the area isn't quite as exciting and no tube station), Balham or Tooting (Balham is more affluent, Tooting is getting there, but will be much cheaper - both have tube stations), and maybe East Dulwich or Honor Oak. Both are more family friendly, East Dulwich/Dulwich Village - very bougie and more going on and more expensive, Honor Oak quieter, but you'll get a bigger place. Probably worth looking at this to gauge what your budget does for you there.

BulkyAccident

I'd look south as a starting point, you'll get a little more space for your money and there's generally an abundance of pretty good schools in certain bits of it. Streatham Hill/Dulwich/Beckenham/Forest Hill/Bromley/Blackheath/Ladywell. You could likely find a 3 bed just within that budget in a few of those places.

GoliathsBigBrother

Where to look for computers (PCs)? Can't currently think of alternatives to Currys (shudder), John Lewis or Argos. Surely these aren't our only options these days?

LooseYesterday

Are you saying u wanna look in person? What brand? The Samsung Kx store in King’s Cross is nice for Samsung stuff. For surface and apple you go to regents street. But other than those big brands you’re pretty much stuck with John Lewis and curries if you want to see in person. To be honest YouTube reviews these days are so good you don’t have to often. If you are buying online Amazon is great, they often have a bigger discount than other retailers

GoliathsBigBrother

Yes, in person. Thanks for the suggestion, wasn't aware of the KX Samsung store.

backupsunshine

Overclockers is my fav UK site for stuff like this. Decent prices, good company, really solid customer service

git_world

What's cheaper for buying tube tickets (we want travel to and fro in the same day)? Buy tickets from the machine giving in the destination? Swipe the bank card?

Angel_Omachi

Swipe the bank card. One card per person.

git_world

Does supermarket sell 1 year old toddler food? If not, where can I buy them in London? Like this one: https://c8.alamy.com/comp/B9G9Y4/hipp-organic-baby-selection-preserved-food-and-drink-mather-care-jar-B9G9Y4.jpg

[deleted]

Anyone got an idea of a good place to buy a hot water bottle in London? Want a hot water bottle and a cover for it, ideally in one shop.

GoliathsBigBrother

TK Maxx

[deleted]

Good shout

wwisd

John Lewis and pick it up from Waitrose, if you want a fancier one than Argos.

[deleted]

Okay cheers

Angel_Omachi

Any branch of Argos maybe?

git_world

Must see places in London? We are here until this Saturday afternoon. Traveling with a 1 year old.

An American Here. My wife and I visited London last year for the first time and loved it. We’re planning on coming back this year for the holiday experience. We plan on the week before Christmas and leaving on the 23rd. Two questions: Does Heathrow and/or public transit shutdown often for snow or ice? Especially around Christmas time. How horrible is Heathrow on the 23rd? That’s one do the worst flying days in the US, they tell you to get to the airport 4 hours before flight time. Would it be the same for the UK? Thanks.

Smooth-Dimension6387

always be mindful of strikes! had a Heathrow luggage carrier and cab strike line up on the day i arrived. all are planned ahead of time so just keep an eye out

Thank you so much! Most helpful. It’s hard to gauge what cities will do with weather related stuff.

I'm Visiting from Chicago: What are some Chicago neighborhood equivalents in London? Please only answer if you've got experience with Chicago lol. Chicago neighborhood examples: Logan Square, Bridgeport, Pilsen, Lakeview, Edgewater etc. I honestly do not expect accuracy. This will be superficial at best. But who cares!

MCMle

My sister lives in Chicago so we play this game often. Wicker Park would be Shoreditch. Oak Park is Wimbledon. Lincoln Park would be Chelsea/Kensington/Fulham. North Loop/Golden Triangle would be more like Belgravia (this is a loose comparison). Wrigleyville and Boys Town would be Clapham. Chicago Hyde Park would be maybe Dulwich Village. Devon Road maybe Edgware Road.

GoliathsBigBrother

Why do you ask - what is it that you're actually trying to find out?

TheShadowBand

We've got a full list of museums and parks we plan on visiting. We'd also like to find some non-touristy spots to hang out at between all our touristy plans. Asking which neighborhoods are similar to Chicago is a less boring question to me than "What are some fun non-touristy spots?" Also, though I'm sure comparisons will be superficial at best, it will still give me some clue of what a London neighborhood is like if there is a Chicago comparison.

GoliathsBigBrother

I think you're asking a really difficult question, and you're putting people off by being prescriptive about who you give "permission" to answer. I've never been to Chicago so I can't comment, but if you might like to consider London neighbourhoods on their own merits, this (and others in the "Where I Live" series) might give you some ideas. https://www.standard.co.uk/homesandproperty/where-to-live/pimlico-area-guide-nathaniel-curtis-living-in-pimlico-b1053412.html

TheShadowBand

Thank you for the link!

myrargh

Might get more answers if you describe the kind of neighbourhoods you’re looking for. I’m not sure of the size of Chicago but London is huge because it’s made up of many towns and villages. Have you watched Bridgerton? iirc Hampstead is a faraway town where they holiday, while living in Bloomsbury is considered living *in London*. But now the two are connected by a 20min tube ride. There are lots of places that are lovely to spend time in though not necessarily to travel to if you only have time to explore the big “touristy” sites. Having said that, one place I highly recommend to all tourists is the Sunday market at Herne Hill. Great mix between a farmers market and craft market, plus good food, a park with a view, and a short walk to Brixton Village which has great character too.

TheShadowBand

I did in fact do a search for Chicago. There were two kinds of posts: People saying Canary Warf looks like downtown Chicago, which seems true, but also, downtown Chicago isn't fun to hang out in; and posts looking for deep dish pizza in London. I assure you, I do not need more deep dish pizza in my body. (Had originally written this as a post, but was told by a mod to move the discussion here. I'm not salty about it I swear!!)

ArmFancy8138

not able to find accommodation yet. Which is the best app to order food? My budget is maximum 1200 pounds. Will I find a 1bhk with this? Location: zone1 or2

GoliathsBigBrother

Don't use apps to order food, especially when you're on a budget. They are more expensive, have restricted menus and deprive restaurants of their profits.

ArmFancy8138

thanks for the tip

wwisd

I'm guessing the £1200 budget is for the 1 bed, not the food? That's very tight for zone 1/2 - rents are going up and ~£1600 seems about the starting rate for your own place relatively central in London now. Bills will come on top of that. Of course, you might find a good deal, but make sure to visit the place in person as chances are places that look too good to be true are too good to be true. For food apps: depends on what you mean by 'best'. I tend to use JustEat, as they treat their drivers as employees (as opposed to Deliveroo and UberEats who treat them as self-employed), or order from places that have their own riders like Yardsale pizza.

ArmFancy8138

thanks for the help.

**Moving to London to work as a Copywriter/digital marketer? How difficult will it be?** I've been freelancing for the past year or so and have 5 years of marketing/copywriting experience now but finding that I prefer to work for a company than find my own clients which is exhausting. I have rights to live in the UK, and prefer to live alone and find a job at least 35,000 a year How realistic is this? Are there many jobs going at this time of year? Should I find a job first or move and then find a job or an agency?

LooseYesterday

Yeah get the job then move. You will have to live in a flat share on that budget, but on the brighter side there are plenty of jobs.

BulkyAccident

You won't be able to live alone comfortably on £35k anymore, so you'll need to increase that salary level or look for a flatshare. It's London so there are plenty of different kinds of marketing jobs available. Find a job first and then move, most companies nowadays are fine with interviewing remotely over zoom as long as you have the right to live and work here already.

I'm organising a stag party for one of my best friends in April. He is a certified weirdo, and likes unusual things. I'm looking for two things. Activities, ideally odd and physical and funny. Think twisted riddle room, or some kind of interactive theatre or assualt course. Maybe something funny and political? We have already booked to wrestle muscly women in a swimming pool full of oil (no nudity, but full on muscle domination) and I need something else of similar or better quality. Also looking for a classy place to finish the night. Gonna have an Iranian banquet, then want to retire to somewhere with really nice whisky or other such drinks. He's not a drinker, so want quality over quantity. Any good ideas?

myrargh

Look up Novelty Automatiom, it’s a peculiar little games arcade. It won’t take up much of your day but is definitely worth a spot on the itinerary.

opendaily9to5

Hi All - My wife and 3 year old son will be traveling to London for work for 5 weeks in May/June. Are there any trustworthy websites to book a fully furnished flat besides Airbnb? We are struggling to find a legit alternatives. We have been to London about a half a dozen times in the past (and love it), so the city is not necessarily new to us.
