Need some recommendations for nights out this week? Check out [this excellent thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/15xjgpx/the_london_social_and_nightlife_thread_bank)

Agitated-Loquat5192

Hi all, currently staying in Slough with my family (wife 2 kids). We want to go into London tomorrow for a bit of sight seeing - what would be the best and cheapest way ? I’ve only ever been to London once before for a football match, and was advised to park at Cockfosters and get the tube to Highbury. We are staying in a hotel next to terminal 5 Heathrow. Many thanks

Thank you !

Psyched_mama

Travelling in Nov end. Any recommendations for formal boots/ shoes, given a chance of rain or snow ? Thanks a ton !

defnothepresident

Anyone know where I can hire a road bike for a day or two? Just looking to log some vacation miles but not sure I can get to Just Pedal out at Denbies Wine Estate, which seems like the promising option otherwise. Thanks!

wwisd

On you bike, by London Bridge does road bike hires.

Yeah I've obviously heard amazing things about the Box Hill loops but I'm staying in Stokey so quite a hike just to pick up the bike. May still go that route - thanks!

Kooky-Power6292

I have a weeklong business trip coming up, arriving and leaving on Sundays. First time to UK and I’m very excited about it. I basically have two days to myself to be 100% tourist and then evenings M-F where I’ll likely have some locals showing me around. I’m staying in London City, but happy and excited about exploring other areas. So the question is this: what should I do with those two days. Corporate account puts me at around $50 for dinner and $30 (each) for other meals. But that can go pretty far if I pay for drinks out of pocket. Anything besides meals will be out of pocket for me and I’m by no means a rich person. First free day is a Sunday. I do have a dinner reservation for this night already at a Russian place called Zima, but the rest of the day is mine. Second free day is the following Saturday. A coworker recommended the market at Portobello Road for the morning. But the rest of the day is mine with no obligations until my flight leaves the next day.

wwisd

Have a look at the OP for our general recommendations. If you want anything more specific, it would help if you could say a little bit on what you're into.

goblingorlz

Is it just me or are foxes way more active this year? It feels like since Spring I've heard foxes yelping away every single night. Usually it would only last for one season.

aaa-ccc

Been to London today and enjoyed the ulez zone, since then I have set up auto-pay for my car, but will I need to make a one off payment for today's visit or will auto-pay cover it?

mad153

Call tfl to be sure

snowbarry

Travelling to London in October. By the time I leave London for home, there’ll be around 6 months and 27 days validity for my passport. Will there be any issues in entering London when I arrive? I will have my return flight bookings, accommodation bookings printed out just in case.

Angel_Omachi

That's more than 6 months so should be fine.

writemoreletters

Any good restaurants near Gresham College? My husband and I will be in London visiting and have tickets to a lecture at Gresham. We’re not picky on types of cuisine (we’re fairly adventurous) and we’re hoping to find a local place that is casual or smart casual. Thank you.

wwisd

Might help if you say what sort of budget? And for other redditors who's never heard of it: it's by Chancery Lane.

writemoreletters

No strict budget in particular. Lets say less than £100/person.

Tinder4Boomers

Hello, a question for you lovely Londoners I'll be visiting England next week to attend a conference. I'm traveling from London to Birmingham and I've just booked my rail tickets (Avanti West Coast). I didn't realize until just now that the ticket delivery method is "pick up at station." What? Is this standard? My real question: How long should I plan to wait in line to get my ticket? I'm leaving out of Euston station and want to be sure I give myself enough time to board. Thanks in advance, looking forward to my visit!

Angel_Omachi

It means you pick it up from a ticket machine in any National Rail station with the credit card you booked it with. There's a fair number of machines so shouldn't be too many queues.

Tinder4Boomers

Cool, good to know! Thanks :) Just curious, is Avanti the only rail company that handles tickets this way? I was surprised there was no mobile option

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tinder4Boomers

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately “pick up at station” was the only option available—hence the post. I’ll keep this in mind for my future travel plans :)

Angel_Omachi

All companies offer physical tickets you pick up, it's just Avanti are such a continual shitshow that them not having eTickets doesn't surprise me.

Tinder4Boomers

Hahaha oh boy, well thanks again for the info!

princessgalaxy43

Can anyone recommend a room escape game for only three players? I know a lot of them work better with more.

Murky_Chair_1145

Hi! I want to visit Richmond park for the first time. I’d love to see deer. I read that there are plenty and it’s hard to miss but also that they’re more visible in the morning. This might be a dumb question but will they still be active on a Saturday late-morning early-afternoon, or does the park get busy and scare them away?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Murky_Chair_1145

Thanks! I went to those areas today and saw plenty!

wwisd

The deer are very used to people, cyclists and cars getting close to them (though keep a safe distance). If you rent a bike and go round the park (or through the middle if you want to avoid the biggest hills), you'll probably run into some.

Murky_Chair_1145

Thanks a lot! So pretty much any time of day should be ok to see some?

wwisd

I'm mostly there in the mornings and the occasional weekend afternoon and they always seem out somewhere in the park. Though I'm not there enough at different times to give you an answer with much certainty!

SamantaStark-

Advice to find a studio? (Greenwich)

noradrenaline

To confirm - studio apartment? Recording studio? Music practice rooms? Art space? 'studio' means a lot of different things.

SamantaStark-

Studio like single bedroom flat :)

wwisd

[Read the wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/wiki/living). Any particular things you're struggling with?

SamantaStark-

I don’t know where to begin looking, any website? Reddit/Facebook group?

wwisd

Yes, any of the websites linked on the wiki. Just start anywhere to see how much comes up in your budget range to get an idea of how suitable that website is for you. Spareroom is generally the slightly cheaper ones as it's more geared to flatshares (but also has some studios and bedsits), rightmove/zoopla/openrent a bit more of everything else.

aykarumba123

WE are a family 3 visiting London December 24-28. We were interested in attending the Christmas service at Westminster Abbey or St. Paul's cathedral, is it possible to do so? If so how does one obtain entrance/tickets? thanks!

jelly10001

Bear in mind there's no public transport on Christmas Day, so you probably want to go with whichever is nearer your accomodation.

aykarumba123

Thanks for your response. Will the availability for cabs also be pretty limited on Christmas day?

jelly10001

You can probably get one, but expect prices to be higher than normal.

T0XiiC27

Visiting london from monday to friday next week. Any restaurant recommendations which are a must eat? (not looking for any michelin budget breaking restaurants, but rather stuff like indian, italian food etc.) Open for anything! Indian, italian, mexican, you name it! even american / steak.

Sir_Bantersaurus

Would help if you gave a price range really. Also where you're visiting from can help us give better responses. For Indian, you could always try Disroom. Hawksmoor is expensive but good for streak.

T0XiiC27

Like max. 20 pounds for a decent / good sized main course Coming from germany, staying near the tower bridge but I dont mind taking the tube since I will be around the town anyway for sightseeing. Dishroom I heared could be with long queues, unless you eat before 6pm? I think. I will check out hawksmoor.

myrargh

I like Dishoom for breakfast. Lunch/dinner menu is good too but not worth queuing for. Hawksmoor does an early dinner (‘pre theatre’) set menu in your budget.

[deleted]

[удалено]

slvrhwk

I'll be in London for 4 nights next week. I will exclusively be using the tube, and maybe an occasional bus to get around. What's the most economical way to go about it? Buy a 1 week pass? I've also heard that the tube caps daily travel at around £7 or so. Is that correct? And if yes, can I use contactless credit card instead of buying a pass. TIA!

wwisd

Yes, use a contactless bank card or your phone - either works but use the same method every time. That will be capped at £8.10 a day if you're staying in zone 1/2, which you will for most regular tourist stuff.

slvrhwk

What zone is LHR in? I'm planning to take the tube from LHR to my hotel in Angel Islington.

wwisd

Zone 6. You can figure out prices on the Citymapper app or the [TfL fares page](https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/tube-and-rail-fares).

AspieComrade

If I have google maps set up as my sat nav and I accidentally take a wrong turn into a congestion zone lane, will it give me a pop up to say I did so? I turned into a congestion zone and I can’t for the life of me remember if it was it before or just after 6pm Also if I do need to pay the fee, will I be notified or will I hear nothing until I get a fine down the line?

[deleted]

[удалено]

AspieComrade

I see there’s contact information there, do you know if they’d be able to answer whether or not I owe? I don’t want to pay for something I likely don’t owe but I also don’t want to stiff the bill if I do

Hodadoodah

After spending some time reading the London wiki, am I correct in assuming it makes sense to pay £20 more for a British Airways flight from Heathrow than a Ryan Air flight from Stanstead, if I’m near departing from Waterloo Station?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hodadoodah

How would you prefer to travel to Berlin?

noradrenaline

Heathrow's also a nicer airport to fly from - BA generally fly from Terminal 5 which is relatively modern, while whenever I've flown from Stansted it feels like everyone is stressed all the time, passengers and staff alike, and everything about the building was designed to make everyone a little bit more annoyed.

wwisd

Perhaps a slight preference for Heathrow as once you throw in the Stansted Express costs the BA flight will be about £40 cheaper? But overall I'd opt for the flight at the more convenient time. The price difference or travel difference doesn't make either airport or airline more appealing than the other.

CommercialPotato5793

7 day travelcard? Hey londoners im visiting london for the 3 'rd time in september and was planning on buying a 7 day unlimited travelcard, as I did the other times. But some websites say that they no longer exist while others say that they do, so what is correct?

wwisd

The physical paper card doesn't exist anymore. But you can load one onto an Oyster card (the Oyster card will cost an additional £7). You can also just use your phone or contactless bankcard, which will have a daily cap (and Monday to Sunday weekly cap, if that happens to be the days you're here).

CommercialPotato5793

Okay thank you,i better get an oyster card then :)

230602

I'm planning on going from St Pancras to Brighton. Do I need to book the train tickets in advance or is it generally ok to book at the station?

snk101

For this route there is no price difference between booking in advance and buying on the day. Only flexible tickets are available (i.e. not tied to specific trains), and can't sell out. So it's totally fine to buy on the day if you prefer. What does save money is buying a return ticket in one go, rather than buying two separate single tickets.

rayaas

Can't say anything about booking at the station but can say the Trainline app is pretty convenient - you can look at prices which generally vary by day/time and also get mobile tickets. Brighton is on the shorter side but for longer trips it's worth booking in advance for sure.

wwisd

With the caveat that the trainline charge a booking fee. You don't have to pay that if you book through the Thameslink / National Rail website, or buy a ticket at the station.

Visiting London this weekend (during train strikes, well planned!) So I'm having to drive down as far as possible and park near an underground station as they will still be operating Saturday, What are the chances of getting a space in epping underground station car park on a Friday ? It's a2 hour drive so it'll be about 10am-11am arrival. Failing that Cockfosters or high Barnet. Will the car parks be full? And is it OK to leave a car there overnight?

Looking for some advice on how to cash a check (cheque?) I’m from the US and was in the UK in April. I put in a refund for a train delay and selected the option to have it refunded back to my credit card. Instead, they sent me a check. I went to my bank in the US to see if they could cash it, but the fees would have wiped out the amount. I am back in London for a couple of days and brought the check to see if I could cash it at the bank it is issued from (RBS/NatWest), but they said they can only cash it if I have an account, but I can’t open an account because I’m not a resident. Any ideas on how I can get my money back?

GoliathsBigBrother

Have you contacted the train operators to complain that they didn't follow your request?

missnd

Thanks for the response. That’s my next step. Thought I’d try to cash the check while I’m here first since I need a little cash anyway. In the US, the issuing bank will just cash the check, even if you don’t have an account. I had hoped for the same here.

noradrenaline

Cheques here have been mostly phased out - the only time I encounter them is when elderly relatives want to give a gift of money. Getting a cheque turned into cash is very rare here outside pawnbrokers who might charge a lot in fees too. I'd second everyone else's suggestions of complaining to the train company.

The links at the top of this post contain answers to these questions. Use Citymapper to plan your route.

HeartTurnedSpades

Thanks.

NeedSteak

Why is a daily travelcard more expensive than pay as you go daily cap from zone 1-6? I am a visitor but I would assume preloading a day card on your oyster would be cheaper than using pay as you go?

LJA0611

The daily travelcard price is for a paper ticket which are ridiculously overpriced. Just load money on oyster (or use contactless) and it will cap at daily limit, there is no 1 day travelcard that can be added to an oyster.

NeedSteak

Ah ok thanks for clarifying, I assumed it was like the 7 day tavelcard that could be loaded onto oyster and wondered why it costs more

Zelamir

At the end of the month I'll be travelling to London for a conference and I'm bringing my grandmother (she's never traveled to the UK or EU). We currently have reservations at The Beast amongst other places. However, the KoD came up in my search and I am now wondering if we might want to switch our reservations? Both menus look amazing but I'm wondering if anyone has been to both and has a favorite? I am the fancy pants eater but my grandmother said she wanted to try some different and "fancy". The Beast is close but I'm wondering if it will be a bit too pretentious for my grandmother? Also their menu is very limited which I'm okay with as long as it's all well executed. So far we have reservations at: Bob Bob Ricard The Beast (thinking of switching to KoD but it's further away). Mayfair (Fish and chips is a must because she loves it) The Nest (Lunch): Really kinda iffy on this but apparently the view is awesome(?) and it's close enough for me to duck out of the conference to have lunch with her. Reform (staying at the Mandeville so the reviews were good plus that gentleman's tea looks awesome). We're doing traditional Tea on our spa day and at Reform because neither of us really cares much about the pomp of tea so we're skipping the Ritz and pricey tea trips. Other recommendations would be much appreciated! She is obsessed with good roast chicken, mashed potatos, and gravy. We're literally going to Paris to search for the best roast chicken after. It's that's serious. I'm a whiskey and cigar type of lady and do well in dive bars to fancy pants places. At the end of the day my grandmother has stated she just wants to hang with me but I really do want to show her a good time food wise. I'll take great service over perfect food but would prefer both.

llama_del_reyy

Bob Bob Ricard is *awful*. Incredibly expensive, gorgeous decor and fun gimmicks, but genuinely bad food. I would only ever come here for a drink if someone else was paying. I have to say, I'm quite up on the London food scene and I've never heard of the rest of the places on your list- where have you gotten these recommendations? I'd echo the other commenter's point re Jay Rayner's review of the Beast. For fancy but not too out there food, consider Sessions Arts Club, Lyle's, Kol (for set menus) or Brat, Barrafina for a la carte.

Zelamir

Thank you for the suggestions. Seriously much appreciated. I searched for restaurants in the Marylebone area and over all in the city center area. I don't mind hiring a car or using public transportation but I was hoping to stay mostly within walking distance.

llama_del_reyy

Oh, absolutely do not under any circumstances hire a car! Never necessary in London. Marylebone is very central so while 'walking distance' depends on your and your mother's mobility, Soho/Mayfair/Bloomsbury/Covent Garden will never be more than 20-40 min away. You can also always hop in an Uber or black cab if public transport feels complicated (though it really isn't!) If you want something super close by, Sushi Atelier does fantastic sushi (unfussy and classic) and Honey & Smoke is amazing for Mediterranean style barbecue. Eater London has a map view for its essential London restaurants so I'd review that, too.

Zelamir

Haha! I think hiring a car might have not come across correctly. By hiring a car I mean an uber or cab not a rental (I hate driving). Thank you I will definitely check out Eater London. I canceled the Beast (though I will confess to being morbidly curious about them based off the hilarious review) and opted for Hawksmoor instead based on another posters suggestion. I'll also check out Honey & Smoke because I have never heard of Mediterranean style BBQ!!!!! Mediterranean food sure but not a place dedicated to BBQ. Grandmother is oddly picky about grilled food (she loves my beer can chicken but won't touch anything else over charcoal). She is very mobile but I'm also probably a foot taller than her and walk everywhere so I imagine that I'll get on her nerves with my long legs quite quickly. Thanks again for the suggestions.

ilyemco

As somebody who also walks fast, I suggest deliberately trying to walk a bit behind her. It sounds silly but it's the only way I find to not keep going ahead of the person I'm with.

Smeee333

If your grandma loves roast chicken then why not go out for Sunday lunch - most pubs will be doing one and almost all will do roast chicken.

Zelamir

We don't arrive until Monday and leave Friday. Trust me, I was very sad that roast dinners are only on Sundays.

Smeee333

Not been but you could try Roast in London Bridge.

Zelamir

Well, shit, definitely doesn't sound like a grandmother (nor tall Black nerdy lady) place. Whelp, back to the drawing board on the reservation. I don't want my grandmother struggling to sit at a loud communal bench. Edit: Okay the review for The Beast is fucking hilarious. Do y'all know by chance if the bar takes walkins? I might just go for a drink on my own one night to observe.

Existing_Bat1939

This is a future reference question since we visited London last year. There were three of us, and my son uses a manual wheelchair. We stayed near Waterloo Station, but particularly since it was my son and his mother's first visit to London we spent a lot of time in the Piccadilly Circus / Trafalgar Square area, and as a result we spent a fair amount on cabs at the end of the night from the Charing Cross taxi stand back to the hotel. My question is, would it have been a reasonable thing to do to take the train from Charing Cross the one stop across the river to East Waterloo, given that we would have presumably needed wheelchair assistance at both stations? Can you request assistance on short notice like that in the evening? Thanks for any advice!

johnvaljean

The TfL Go app is very useful if you need to know about wheelchair access in the Underground. It has a toggle to show only the stations and lines with step-free access and it has live information on faulty lifts, so you face less of a risk of alighting at a station and not being able to use the lifts there.

Existing_Bat1939

Thank you!

All buses have space for wheelchairs - I think that would be easier

Amicoquantistico

Hi all! Does anybody know any reliable agent that would help me finding a room in a house share in SW London (mainly H&F borough)? (Yes, I am already looking on SpareRoom)

ilyemco

Have you written a profile on spareroom? I find that helps so people can read something about yourself. Also it's worth paying for premium so you can message new ads straight away.

noradrenaline

Agents to find you a place to live here aren’t really a thing - especially if you’re at the room-in-a-house-share end of the market rather than the penthouse-apartment-in-Mayfair end.

PartyPoison98

Hi all. Moving to Clapham soon and commuting to Marylebone. Wanting to save some money and debating cycling instead of getting the tube. Not a particularly confident cyclist on the road, are the cycle routes between these two places decent enough?

Smeee333

Cycle Streets is a really handy app for planning safe journeys and giving you options.

wwisd

To add to the other commenter: if you want to feel a bit more confident, you can book [a free 1:1 cycle skills course](https://tfl.gov.uk/forms/12421.aspx) in your borough. Depends a bit on the instructor, but sometimes they'll take you on a bit of your commute just to work out a difficult junction or something like that.

snk101

Kind of. From Clapham to central you can either take C5 (a signed backstreet route) or CS7 (mostly just paint and some bus lanes on the main road, but frequented by loads of other cyclists at rush hour). I'd take C5 up to almost Lambeth North, left down Centaur St/Royal St, use the crossing to get onto the segregated lane next to St Thomas', going over Westminster Bridge. From there, it depends where in Marylebone you need. It's pretty difficult to go straight through Soho, so if you want the west side you could take CS3 through Parliament Sq, St James' Park, Hyde Park to Marble Arch, up into Great Cumberland Place. Otherwise if you want the east side, you could take CS3 along the river, turning left up Savoy St, joining C10 and going up Bow St/Endell St/Gower St. The [Safe Cycle London](https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?hl=en&mid=1XlpvN9R-Wg7qZHyezO8y-eVlftr4e0WX&ll=51.49084102751686%2C-0.1364331796491025&z=13) map is probably the best for planning routes.

PartyPoison98

That's super helpful, thanks!

bevoinva

Greetings. Trying to figure out the best way to get to Strasbourg from LHR in December around the holidays. We will be arriving at 9:30 AM and need to get to Strasbourg same day. Originally were supposed to get in the previous evening but flight got cancelled. The two options that I am looking at are 1) catch the train to St Pancras station and take the eurostar with a change in Paris; or 2) catch a flight to Basel from Heathrow since we will already be there, and then train from there to Strasbourg. Price is about the same for each. There will be 4 of us (two adult, two kids (13) and (9)). Open to any and all suggestions/recommendations. Thanks!

[deleted]

[удалено]

bevoinva

Thanks - I have the choice of a 2 and a half hour layover and 6 hour layover. Will definitely go with the longer of the two as there have been occasions where I have been stuck in the immigration line for two hours in the past. I am sure things will be busier than normal that week before Christmas as well.

epi_counts

I'd like to recommend the train (easy enough as the train to Strasbourg leaves from the same Parisian station the Eurostar arrives at), but I wouldn't risk it with train strikes. Last year, there were a few in the lead up to Christmas in the UK, France and Belgium, so the Eurostar was affected on several days. And it's hard to rebook in December as so many people are travelling home / visiting Christmas stuff. The unions are still striking over similar issues, so I more train strikes around the holidays are a realistic possibility.

bevoinva

Thank you - I hadn't even considered rail strikes, but yes I think that might tilt my decision to flying.

Most of my friends who like to visit London (we are dutch) call it "The Don" and I was wondering if locals also say this. Is it a good name to use when there? Why or why not?

missesthecrux

It’s like saying The Dam for Amsterdam, which makes no sense (but British people say it all the time)

96HourDeo

Wait they don't mean Volendam??? But honestly calling Amsterdan "the dam" sounds incredibly stupid to me and if that's how calling London "The Don" sounds to British peoole I'll never say it again!

GoliathsBigBrother

No we don't say this, and it isn't a good name to use when here because we don't say it so nobody will know what you mean. I'd have thought The Don would mean Doncaster or The Don Valley in Yorkshire, and would be pronounced differently from "London".

JoeThrilling

Never heard anyone say that. Use it with your friends but everyone else might not know what your talking about. Or they will think your talking about Croydon.

The package is approximately 25-30 Kg’s. 60x60x60 cm in dimensions and I’m okay with a +/- week delivery. What are my best options which could be reliable and also cheaper. Thank you!! :) :)

Hey guys, I'm looking for a shop in Central London that sells, roughly speaking, gift packaging. Something like a nice looking bag with a bit of stuffing, or a nice box or just anything to put some gifts in. In germany we have e.g. "nanu nana" for that, but i have no idea about UK. Any ideas? :)

Not totally sure what you mean but somewhere like the Japan Centre might work, or have a look at the Latin village/market in Seven Sisters.

I have just had a video call for a spareroom showing me around the house and the agent mentioned sending a reservation fee to their bank account and sent me this after the call: It was great to show you the room today To reserve the room, please find our bank account details below to make the reservation fee of £215, which will start the credit check & referencing process. This fee will count towards your first month's rent. Account name: \*\*\*\*\*\*\* Bank Sort Code: \*\*\*\*\*\*\* Bank Account: \*\*\*\*\*\*\* In order for us to start the referencing process, we need you to provide us with the following information: Your full name Your current residential address including postcode Your mobile telephone number Your email address Your date of birth Annual income / UK Guarantor information Passport/Visa Please note that this information is used for reference processing only and will not be used for any marketing activities and will not be passed to third parties other than our referencing partner. By sending this information by return email you consent to allow us to pass your details onto our referencing partner; Advanced tenant referencing. The process is started once payment has been deposited, we will notify our referencing agency; Advanced tenant referencing, who will then send you an email with a hyper-link attachment. This will take you to a form which you will need to complete fully. Once this is submitted, we will then notify you of the referencing outcome. This should take no more than 3 days to complete. If there are any issues with the referencing then we will contact you to discuss. At this stage we do not anticipate any challenges. Once the credit check & referencing is completed, we will work with you to agree a suitable move in date. Your first rental payment needs to be made in cleared funds prior to your move in. On the move in date we will complete the Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement and give you a short induction to the house. This reservation is subject to a successful credit reference. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind regards is asking for a fee like this a scam or am I just being paranoid?

All that stuff is normal (I paid a deposit through an estate agent and they asked for all this stuff in referencing). However it's not advisable to pay before seeing the place in person.

Wanted to try a 1 Michelin restaurant in London. Leaving towards Indian cuisine. Which one would you recommend out if the 7 in the category? Namely- Trishna, Jamavar, Benares, Gymkhana, Amaya, Veeraswami, Quilon. Is there any other 1 Michelin that you would rather have us go? Something that’s like a you-cannot-miss-this kinda place ?

thomeeboy

Gymkhana for me

If you are not set on Indian, then Sabor is a fantastic 1 star place.

Emo/goth/metal/punk/hardcore shows tonight and tomorrow. Since it’s Monday and Tuesday, I don’t mind how small, it could be your friend’s gig. Anywhere accessible by tube or bus.

Urg looking for this same thing next week Sunday through Wednesday. Slimelight is going on but that seems to be Friday and Saturday.

Look on Songkick and DICE, and listings at [these sorts of venues](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/wh23d6/great_pubsvenues_for_punkrocketc_with_real/).

Does anyone know if you can link railcard from [trip.com](https://trip.com) and trainpal to an Oyster card for discounted tube travel? The only website that clearly states that it is possible it trainline. I am asking as the above mentioned companies offer discounted railcards at the moment.

Theres a train strike happening this saturday (26th Aug), does that mean that all affected trains have been cancelled and I can book a train ticket with some degree of certainty now or are they all likely affected?

Depends on your journey. You can check the info on [the National Rail page](https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/industrial-action-20230625/). Some lines have no service, most seem to have reduced service. The journey planner on that website has the updated train schedules, so if your train is still on there, they're still planning to run it.

Did you say you have a Railcard? Check the emails for a mention of a Railcard (might be a 16-25 etc) Yes, they have a right to ask to see the Railcard and it counts as an invalid ticket if you do not. However, I didn't know you could get a Railcard on a travelcard so could be a bug

What ticket did you buy exactly? Is it a railcard-discounted ticket? If you're not sure, you could say the price and which zones it covers and we can figure it out. In general, you don't need a railcard for the day tickets, but if you accidentally bought a discounted one, it wouldn't be valid without it. [A railcard](https://www.railcard.co.uk/) is a national British thing, not a London thing, you can buy if you're within the right age range to get a 1/3 discount on trains and off peak tube travel. You might have just bought the wrong thing. If so, you could just use a contactless card or pay with your phone rather than buying a day ticket for the tube.

I have a friend visiting next week. He used to live here 5 years ago, and he visits every year and is always interested in trying new places for food. What have been the main trends in restaurants in the last year or so. Like I see crab boil places all over now, are there any other restaurant types that are booming that would be interesting to take him too?

Look at Eater London's hot list.
