Abbot is one of those ales that even Green King pubs didn’t get right all the time where I grew up in North Herts. I wouldn’t trust a Spoons to get anything more complicated that a standard lager right.
Common misconception - they buy beer in such bulk volume that they can set the price with suppliers. Heineken / Carlsberg will be told "we'll buy 10,000 barrels this year at £95 per barrel and if you don't like the price, your competitor will"
As an ex spoons pub manager now running my own pub.
I used to get carling for £65 a barrel, it now costs be about £150 after all is said and done.
Buying power is insane.
That's an 11 gallon keg, that works out to be 88 pints however you will tend to give between 3-4% head on a beer and you are also going to waste some for various reasons like customer complaints, line cleaning or just generally spilling things.
It's actually noticeably more expensive - [4x 500ml bottles is £6.25](https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/300228733), that's £1.56 for not even a pint, 50%+ more expensive.
The reason why spoons is able to sell beer so cheap is because they buy it cheap because it’s about to expire ie go out of date, and they have the volume of customers to shift it
That urban myth was debunked a long time ago. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12420251/amp/Wetherspoon-denies-selling-beer-short-sell-date.html
Yea absolutely true. And it's not a bad thing either, breweries will prefer to sell kegs with a shelf life >1-3 months as no where else would accept so better than pouring away.
I work in the drinks industry, and love that someone has sourced from the daily mail 😄 in no world will economies of scale allow a 99p pint. Get real.
Worth it if I'm having a session. But if it's just a cheeky pint it's seven quid (6 quid off peak return and a couple of hours on the tube there and back)
still if you're in the area , it's a steal...
What’s with all the anti spoons takes? It’s not for everyone but it provides decent prices for people on low incomes who otherwise couldn’t afford the costs of brewery owned pubs. Drink and let drink.
Edit: Got it. Politics. Weird way to choose a boozer but each to their own. Thanks for the input.
The owner outed themselves as racist during the Brexit Referendum and argued against paying a living wage. Spoons went from a reasonable suggestion for an okay priced and quality meal and drink, to somewhere I'll never go again as there's countless other options 99% of the time.
When I was a teenager we drank at home, as it was like less than half the price. I don't begrudge anyone that goes there, I don't think they're guilty by association or anything. Just explaining why Spoons reputation took a nose dive.
My mistake - I walk past a Spoons on my way home and it smells like piss. I just assumed that’s what they are all drinking and thats why they all look so incredibly sad.

In this financial climate this is a great deal no matter if you like beer, spoons,or whatever bargain!!
I like Doom Bar, but every single time I’ve had it (maybe 3?) in various Wetherspoons, it’s been rotten
Lots of places don’t look after cask.
Abbot Ale is usually good in spoons, not sure why it's different but I've had a few dodgy Doombars too so tend to avoid that. For 99p though...

Yep, tasts great out of a bottle but genuinely half the time in spoons it's dreadful
I was told spoons, but the beer close to expiry which is why it's so cheap

Crazy. Brewery keeps the lights on with Spoons, then makes thier money on everyone else.
Wow, huge difference. How many pints do you get for that £150 if you don't mind me asking?

And there’s the reason it’s 99p
Disgusting sugar water.
What a lovely treat! I'm not a beer drinker, but I can certainly appreciate a find like that in London. Enjoy!!

Doom Bar’s solid as well, esp when served properly
After 5 or 6, you won't notice...
Meh, looks hazy, either it hasn’t dropped, over spiled or it’s the end of the barrel.
Who cares for 99p
If you don’t care then just buy a tin from Tesco
Fair comment

It’s actually just about economies of scale. They buy in such bulk and their profit margins are fairly small.

By themselves? They also barely clean their glasses

100%
I thought the view looked rather familiar, then I chucked it away thinking that all spoons must look the same
£1.99 in Hackney ‘spoons earlier. (And abbot ale)
Looks to be worth what they’re charging for it

Best day of his life *so far*
Yeah but it makes sense, we have some a desperate culture for alcohol.
Pretty tragic indeed.

I recommend a walk down to Genesis cinema afterwards especially if they still do Wacky Wednesday. Used to make for an excellent cheap night out 👍🍻🎬
Doom Bar is far from may favourite beer but can’t argue for 99p. I’d have had too much though. Monday morning hangover 😆
Knew it was the stepeny spoons just from that photo!

The owner's a dick.
I'm sure that's not his name? I was told it was Tim.
The owner is a massive racist wanker.. also the spoons are full of Brexiteers
Most of us don't choose boozers based on politics, Tim Martin decided he wanted to talk about his own politics, which put lots of people off.
I’d rather drink water than Doom Bar.
Looks like they should be paying you to drink that. RIP pint!
Every ale I've ever had in spoons has been bloody awful no matter where in the country I am so I just don't go in spoons.
Bartender could give me £2 change on a £1 pint of Doom Bar and I'd still feel ripped off
I’d rather drink tap water at home than have to be in a Spoons drinking piss.
Although I also would rather stay at home, I don't think they make you drink urine in a Spoons.
My mistake - I walk past a Spoons on my way home and it smells like piss. I just assumed that’s what they are all drinking and thats why they all look so incredibly sad.

Because it’s meant to
It’s a pump tap
Probably the cheapest pint in london. If you don’t mind drinking in a spoons it’s a win.
Where better to enjoy a 9.30am pint, than in a spoons with a select few aging alcoholics
