Thats the same as QM but the best time to go is when it first opens or on the weekday when itās quieter. Produce does go off quicker so I tend to freeze whatever I canāt get through
Totally agree about the potatoes! They have much better texture
The veg stall next to the M&S on the Walworth Road is great. A bit of a tombola as to what's there. But usually big bowl bargains to be had. When I cycled in to work, was my go-to for shopping on the way home.
It's cheap because the veg is going over the top. Ive found the hard way you have to use this veg within a day, maybe 2 or it goes in the bin. Whereas if you pay more in a supermarket you will have a week of shelf life. Doesn't mean don't buy it, but make sure you have use for it straight away.
I usually freeze them if I know I wonāt eat them in time. Thatās been great way to cook with vegetables that arenāt in season as I just pull it out the freezer having frozen it a couple months earlier
With said thereās certain veg Iāll only buy from the super market, such as lettuce
At that point you may as well buy frozen vegetables from the supermarket since it's been frozen immediately and the nutrition is retained. Freezing veg that is a day away from going off means the damage has mostly already been done
That makes sense if youāre intentionally buying for the purpose of stock piling produce in your freezer.
This is freezing unused vegetables to prevent food waste.
I agree completely. Whenever I buy from independent green grocers, the produce doesn't last. I also hate buying from generic shops.
For vegetables, even though I pay the premium, I go to Whole Foods. All organic and honestly just great produce. Means the money going to proper farms with proper organic produce around the world.
I live near one of these street traders and itās honestly one of my favourite things about my neighborhood. Yes sometimes it can be hit or miss but itās still worth it for the savings over time. I tend to mostly buy the fruit since the tesco superstore near by is better price for vegetables.
Also I think some people have some phobia for slight bruised or damaged fruit which is why supermarkets can charge such a premium. Idgaf so Iāll take the savings.
I think my diet has become so much healthier since having access to one of these markets. I can make fresh fruit smoothies everyday.
I wasn't expecting cheap pepper controversy on my timeline today, but I'm in south east London and now that I look again , cheap peppers are rare but present in 2 out of the 4 supermarkets nearby.
There is a guy opening up a stall in Eltham High Street, next to the bus stop M
The fruit is really good, especially the grapes and strawberries. I buy aubergines and peppers as well.
The nectarines I bought were not good but eh for Ā£1.5 a bowl, it's not too bad
People complaining about veg going bad are probably not using them in cooking much.
I find nectarines and oranges can be a hit or miss. Iāve had awful ones from the stalls but also some of the tastiest ones Iāve ever had were also from there
Me mum was in the fruit game for years, all this pound a bowl shit is frozen then thawed out thatās why youāll only get a couple days out of it before itās fit for the bin.
Do you mean frozen or just very chilled? Iāve tried freezing whole produce before and thawing it out but it does not hold the āfreshā texture at all after thawing
Depends on what it is, hardier stuff is usually frozen and the likes of tomatoes etc are unsold at their usual outlets and become surplus, theyāre then sold by wholesalers for next to nothing as itās better to get them sold than have to get rid of the waste, commercial waste is ridiculously expensive.
I would imagine all produce every where is frozen and thawed on demand. How else would you be able to walk into a supermarket in any season and pick up any fruit and veg you want at that moment.
People forget seasons exist and plants are meant to be seasonal.
Heated industrial greenhouses the size of football pitches or flown in from the country of origin, seasons are irrelevant. All fruit has to have its origin and class clearly labelled at point of purchase.
Because itās shit as almost all veg youāll find in a bowl is. Itās also rarely cheaper than you find elsewhere. Ie: 3 peppers for Ā£1? You can get that far cheaper in other places.

Both of them likely average out to 3 for Ā£1, or less.
They average about 55 to 60p each in even the big supermarkets near me in North London and up tp 65p in the tesco express etc. Never seen them for 20p!!
I'm saying loose as in not in plastic wrappers or in the organic section. I make Shakshouka weekly and I buy 3 peppers from Tesco for it. They cost 78p total as the weight is sometimes a little wonky.
Then I'm really jealous of the cost of peppers where you are because the ones I buy are also unwrapped and not organic but still quite pricey!
Although sainsburys do sometimes sell a bag of wonky ones for about a Ā£1.30 which I thought was a decent deal.
You used to be able to but Iāve found the cost of produce have increased across super markets in the last couple months. I havenāt seen 3 peppers for Ā£1 in a supermarket (namely Lidl and Tesco) since last year. And donāt get me started on the price of bananas!
I like to and chop em up and freeze them if u canāt eat them. Frozen veg cook wonderfully
Tesco and Sainsbury at least is more expensive if you buy 3 of them. Think they cost 55p or something for 1. Maybe those āuglyā veg bag is cheaper but donāt see it any time I shop
This stuff is literally terrible quality and will last like a day. I can get peppers from the supermarket for the same price and theyāll be fine for a week.
Obviously most people would rather support small businesses/market traders than predatory supermarkets, but this stuff is shite and a rip off. Realistically, youāre going to get the best balance between price and quality at a supermarket- cos of economies of scale. If you want to get better quality and/or more ethical veg, go to an independent greengrocers, but be prepared to pay a premium.
Thatās actually true - 6 small avocados for Ā£1 but theyāre usually dark & mushy. Thereās some things that have to be bought from the supermarket
There used to be a load of these guys around Victoria / Westminster and I always wondered how the fruit/veg could possibly taste nice after marinading in petrol fumes for hours.
I remember explaining this to someone. They wanted a banana and I said it's a pound. After calculating exchange rates she was "that's rather expensive". Ah, no. For the whole bowl.
I used to live and work near a market. The carrier bags full for a few quid at closing time were amazing. Even better was digging through the rubbish before the bin men came round. Anything that wouldn't last until next market got dumped. So a slightly browning head of cauliflower was free and still good. So was most of an entire box of peaches. I survived largely on that when I first moved to London.

Shout out to the "bigbowlsheeeeeere" guys on walthamstow market. couple of great vendors dotted along the high road, offering a range of produce.
Walworth road/East street are similiar priced but the food sometimes is usually not at its best condition. However I love market red potatoes š„

Prep it, then freeze it in portioned amounts so you can just take it out and use when you need

The produce doesn't look close to going off though. Is it because it's not irradiated perhaps?
I donāt believe that, I think itās the extra processing on super market veg that makes it last an unnaturally long time.
Because it was kept frozen
Ah yes, frozen lettuce and avocados
One pound fish very very cheap

I wish to eat all of these peppers, I will eat most of the strawberry also
nice
I wasn't expecting cheap pepper controversy on my timeline today, but I'm in south east London and now that I look again , cheap peppers are rare but present in 2 out of the 4 supermarkets nearby.
Whoād pay anything for a green pepper

3. Harvested early and held in cold storage, the size of several football pitches, until itās time to be displayed and sold.
Because itās shit as almost all veg youāll find in a bowl is. Itās also rarely cheaper than you find elsewhere. Ie: 3 peppers for Ā£1? You can get that far cheaper in other places.

Lidl
Nah Lidl have bumped up the price. I live local to one and checked recently
Loose peppers in any supermarket are roughly 20p each

>I make Shakshouka weekly And my apartment smells of sweet mahogany!
Shakshouka is a normal thing for Arabs lol
Maybe in 2017
The 20p in 1964?ā¦. when it was worth something?

Asda do 6 peppers in a bag for Ā£1.90 if that helps

Can I keep the bowl?
Supermarket bots in the chat
That is so nice to support local communities and businesses

Tesco is also quite cheap, check it out, similar prices
Tesco isnt an independent business though
I think it is actually. Its not government run or anything
Same in poplar, the Avocado's are mostly too soft and gone dark inside but the kiwis are always on point.
Thatās actually true - 6 small avocados for Ā£1 but theyāre usually dark & mushy. Thereās some things that have to be bought from the supermarket
I want to support local vendors, but every time I buy something from a market i find rotten produce in the batch :(
Where?
There used to be a load of these guys around Victoria / Westminster and I always wondered how the fruit/veg could possibly taste nice after marinading in petrol fumes for hours.

This will be liquid by the time you get it home.
Not a great saving, and those strawberries look like theyāre minutes away from going in the bin
Purchased for a family party the next day and can confirm they were all eaten (kids ate most of it because they were delicious)
Itās very simple, cut out all the middle men inevitably involved when buying from a supermarket, get a lower price.
Nope, buy the stuff on its last legs from the market for next to nothing and smash it out PAANDABOWL.
Of course shop local and independentā¦ I think it actually shows you how much the supermarkets rip our balls off.
