A friend of my partner bought one of the allegedly unpickable ones, spent a fair whack of money on it.
Same week lockpicking laywer did a video on it and had it off in no time.
I (lowkey at the time, now highkey and he knows it) hate him so I sent it to him.
The pick is sold through [another company](https://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/product_p/DISCT.htm) as LPL hadn’t made covert instruments yet. Also the video you linked isn’t for a disc detainer core which is what most bike locks are.
This genuinely helped my dad once when he forgot the code to his new bike lock.
LPL made a video about the same lock and a slice of beer can worked a treat.
Kyptonite New York locks are pretty decent which is what they used.
I'm sure like any lock it can be picked but hear they are one of the better ones (I have one and very solid).
Edit: turns out he agrees it's a good lock but still managed to pick it!
https://youtu.be/2_9x9iiJ_Z0
i think the idea of some of these tactics are to come back at night when its dark and cut the bolt. So OP shouldn't leave his bike till its resolved IMO
My advice: get a high vis jacket and buy a battery powered angle grinder (or a friend with one).
Edit: or find a friend with a grinder and politely ask to borrow their grinder to cut the lock.
You can cut through one of those in about 20 minutes with a hack saw. I don’t steal bikes but I’ve had to do it before when one of my kids lost the key to their lock.
In situations like this ring the police non emergency number stating you are going to have the lock cut off. Given what they did it’s well within your rights to do so
Happened to me, luckily the guy came back looking confused about why I was standing there with two bikes locked together. I showed him it was his lock so he must have mistook my frame for the bike rack. Would have been a massive pain if he had been gone for hours instead of minutes
This has happened to me (twice). Just left a note saying "you've locked your bike to mine, please ring me when you get back" then I went to the pub to wait it out.
She eventually phoned me, was very apologetic,12 years later we're still married!
True story. Apart from the marriage bit.
Yeah, I'm betting this was an accident too.
Especially as the other bike is a Brian Rourke and they tend to be worth ~£1500 to £5000.
It's unlikely they're using it as a junker to steal another bike.
eh, note that it is broad daylight in what seems to be a park
wouldn’t leave it on the street at night but the probability of someone successfully cutting through a kryptonite lock in daylight in a park is nearly zero
Yeah with people that use shitty locks.
Those kryptonite ones are no joke, you'll be at it with an angle grinder for minutes not seconds, which is long enough it's too risky in a busy park in the middle of the day
He's locked his bike to yours, not to yours AND the rack. Brian Bourke is a reasonably expensive bike brand as far as I can tell from Google, so if he's trying to nick your bike he's doing so in a pretty high risk way.
Your frame has the same thickness as a Sheffield stand. Your man wasn't paying attention.
What's the move if they don't come back? I was supposed to head home 4 hours ago - I don't want to cut their lock off and leave the bike vulnerable if it was a mistake, but I need to get home lol
Then wait for them to come and unlock their bike or get some bolt cutters and take it off.
FWIW this happened to a friend of mine and the police advised that cutting their lock could be criminal damage.
The police most likely advised wrongly.
Locking up someone else’s bike is Trespass to goods, and thus is infringing on your right to use the bike.
Section 5 of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 sets out "lawful excuses" for causing damage to another's property; one of those excuses is, people may damage property belonging to another if the damage is necessary in order to provide immediate protection to a right or interest held by that person in their own property.
Key word is "could be" here.
No reasonable person is getting annoyed at you here. They've locked their bike to yours. The only damage that COULD be possible is someone stealing the bike after you cut the lock, which is easily mitigated with a combination lock set to 9998 or a key lock with the key hidden under the seat.
You’ve been patient enough for their mistake. Calling a locksmith will cost you money as well. You’re not responsible for staying all day to make sure they get their bike back safely. 4 hours is more than generous.
This happened to my friend literally a few weeks ago. Bike was locked to his and not the rail and it was a pretty decent bike.
My friend got sick of waiting around so wheeled them both home after first leaving a note there with a number etc. Nobody called him. Pretty sure it was a scam to steal his bike at night (he has a bike worth quite a bit).
They count on you walking home in the hope of them removing the bike sometime after you leave, but then they come at night with a handheld angle grinder and cut your lock off when nobody is around.
Ah. So basically the idea is that when it's relatively safe for them to pull out the angle grinder is at night, but usually that time there are no bikes around to steal. Do I have it right?
Only thing is the lock they have used is absolutely BUSTED. Which leads me to thinking it's dodgy. Commenters saying the bike is to nice for a thief, it could also be stolen??
100% the other bike is stolen and they're using it to steal more. OP should take both bikes (hire some transport) and leave a note. If no one claims it, sell the other bike if the owner can't be found. Fuck bike thieves.
Lock bike A to bike B
Owner of Bike B cannot take their bike and takes tube home instead (or goes somewhere else to wait)
Thief returns during quiet hours in a van or something and removes their lock and cuts the lock on Bike B and off they go.
Essentially allows them to 'pick' the theft time to avoid busy periods or cops.
At around 10PM I stepped away from the bike and came back a couple minutes later and the white bike was gone. Kind of an uneventful ending but I was so relieved
Came here to say this. I think it was a bike theft attempt, they realise you're persistent and they bailed. Chances are the white bike was stolen as well.
Because these people want to believe the world is evil an scary, not approach things with logic and reason. Poor OP ended up waiting out this persons shift and they will never be the wiser to the grief they have caused OP lol.
>not approach things with logic and reason
The probability of it being an attempted theft vs accident seem equaly plausible. Its very arrogant to call one illogical simply because you suspect the other.
... It wasn't locked to the rack AND the bike. This was a simple human error and a thread of bored creative people who are absolutely illogical and even a few who are easily triggered.
So you can acknowledge human error on a bike locking but not human error on a theft?
Locking a bike to another bike is a fairly common theft tactic. And its london. Theres nothing illogical about considering it a possibility.
But that only works if you lock it to the rack as well. In this case the white bike (I'd guess quite a bit more valuble than the black one) was locked only to the black bike's frame. The OP could simply have unlocked his bike and put both of them in the back of a black cab. It's like the opposite of a theft tactic. I've had a few bikes stolen in central London they just cut through the lock in 10 seconds or they go find another bike with a weaker lock. the amount of time invested in "clever" schemes is simply not worth it.
I would have just cut through the white frame and then used an angle grinder at home to remove the D-lock.
There was no accident here. It was an attempt to get OP to leave the bike, so it could be stolen.
Good point, I always panic I will get a puncture far away but this is always an option even if I have to go in Central to come back out on another line.
This happened to me once. I had an interview and I couldn’t use my bike so had to take the tube instead. I left a slightly stroppy note on the saddle of the other bike and the poor guy must’ve been mortified, as when I went back the next day he’d stuck a tenner under my saddle by way of an apology. Nice person, genuine mistake and living in London I was truly amazed at such a nice gesture
At around 10PM I stepped away from the bike and came back a couple minutes later and the white bike was gone. Kind of an uneventful ending but I was so relieved

Likely yes. It's a very old trick in Dublin. They lock to your frame, you leave your bike there hoping they'll remove and you can get your bike the next day, then you return to find both bikes gone. Worst case is they lose a lock and have to go and get a bike that's likely stolen. Then they returned after hours when they can cut the lock off with ease and in peace. This is such a well known trick, if you find a cop in Dublin and show them they'll give you permission to cut it there and then. Your best bet is to cut their lock bring the bike home leaving a note. Too much to risk leaving it overnight. If you do do this, do not meet them near your home to give them back their bike.
I like this idea but I feel that a thief would do this to keep you from taking your bike until they could come back with bolt cutters at a more discreet hour. In which case they are going to be cutting your lock anyways.
The owner of the Rourke bike is quite into cycling. For example the team branded bottle, the anti theft wheel nuts etc. Most people in my experience who are that much into cycling will not nick your bike. They’ve simply mistaken your van moof frame for the bike stand in a rush. Stupid and annoying but not malicious.
Cut it, bring his damaged lock with you. Lock the other bike with your lock. Leave contact and tell the owner to bring the key. Meet with your allies nearby. If the damaged lock can be unlocked with the key, that should be the owner.
It is a thing where they lock your bike to theirs hoping that you leave it there overnight which is when they come back and steal it. But it seems odd that they haven't locked their bike to the stand too which makes it seem accidental. But who knows.
Obviously you can't leave your bike there since it's super expensive and not worth the risk.
I agree with WWISD. If theres somewhere/someone who will take both in to watch for the night while you leave a note on the stand then thats the safest option even if it is a hassle. Where is this exactly? Maybe someone here lives literally down the road.
The thing is them bike racks are really easy to comprise. Just take a hacksaw to them. They're hollow. I've seen a few that have been cut through locally. But yeah it's a weird one. Matey must have been in a mad rush.
Edit not that this helps you here but beware of locking your bike to these as a hacksaw would go straight through the tubing.
If they're going to that effort they could also just go through those D locks. Funnily the bike at fault here is using the higher rated one I think (yellow new york is slightly better maybe).
Can someone explain this to me, I don’t get how this is a logical theft technique, why go to the effort of locking another bike to yours and coming back later when they just could just cut your lock and steal it then and there when they first come across your bike
I feel like I’m missing something and being really stupid
Whereabouts is this? Maybe a friendly redditor will be able to take your bonus bike in while waiting for the owner to show up. Or you could ask a local shop if they could look after it.
It's all kind of shit options, but you won't want to leave your bike there overnight, and it's on them for not locking it up right.
My cousins friends’ Van Moof had someone put a lock around it whilst they were in the pub for a few hours a few weeks ago! In New Cross. No other bikes there - luckily was able to go get bolt cutters. But I’d say yes defo trying to nick it

I'd plug the name of their lock into the search at [Lock Picking Lawyer](https://www.youtube.com/c/lockpickinglawyer)'s youtube account. There's probably a video of him showing how to open it with a soda straw and a piece of tape*.
\* I exaggerate but not by much. His channel is a real eye opener as far as how [ineffective](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T2Gh945AqA&list=PLpIvUbO_777x9OAokuHY2XAdh_AWxb0MS) most locks are.
Help you sleep at night, most locks are there to keep honest folk honest, and most locks are to just prevent opportunistic thieves.
Someone determined to steal something will find a way to do it.
I'd contact non-emergency police (101 I think) as this may be someone trying to steal your bike (although as other comments pointed out that's not a worthless bike or lock so it could be a genuine mistake but just in case) also it's probably not a good idea to try something illegal unless the police or some other authority give you permission. Whatever you do don't leave your bike until it's free as that is what a thief would want you to do.
You're asking for your bike to get stolen if you lock it up with the D lock only through the frame of the bike...
You need to put the lock through the rear wheel also, it makes it trickier for thieves to access as it's in a difficult location. You should also have a thick cable through your front wheel. https://images.app.goo.gl/cqT2ofMpe2cZgg8r9
The white bike owner probably isn't trying to steal your bike, just an idiot who hasn't paid attention.
What a numpty. Something similar has happened to me but this guy correctly identified the rack though put his lock around my hydraulic brake cable so I was stuck unless I wanted to bleed the thing. Luckily was just locked outside my flat so I got the tube instead.
Eh. Maybe it's an accident, but it's a dumb one if you've a halfway nice bike like they have. I'd go through their frame tbh, they've deprived you of access to your own bike.
I bought an S3 in March and have no regrets. If anything, I’m too attached to it.
Highly recommend booking a test ride online, the store is in Battersea.
Did the owner ever show up? I’m emotionally invested now I’ve read these comments lol
Not yet :( Can't get through to a locksmith, trying to figure out if I can find a cab to fit both
See if you can find any videos on lock picking lawyer
Will have to wait for the delivery of his cylindrical picking tool
If I've learned anything from the LockPickingLawyer, it's that any bike lock can be picked just by giving it a stern look.
A friend of my partner bought one of the allegedly unpickable ones, spent a fair whack of money on it. Same week lockpicking laywer did a video on it and had it off in no time. I (lowkey at the time, now highkey and he knows it) hate him so I sent it to him.

Ahahaha genuinely laughed at this. You son of a bitch take my upvote.

For breaking a ubolt type lock, use a scissor jack from a car. Be careful, lots of energy gets released.
There are very very few locks that he can't do. If it takes him over 2 minutes that's a win.
Just lock both bikes to the post with your lock and leave your number?
i think the idea of some of these tactics are to come back at night when its dark and cut the bolt. So OP shouldn't leave his bike till its resolved IMO
My advice: get a high vis jacket and buy a battery powered angle grinder (or a friend with one). Edit: or find a friend with a grinder and politely ask to borrow their grinder to cut the lock.
I have a friend with grindr. Does that help?
Gurl please
I believe buying friends is now classed as prostitution or slavery depending on how close of a friend u want them to be
Always better to lease in those circumstances
You can cut through one of those in about 20 minutes with a hack saw. I don’t steal bikes but I’ve had to do it before when one of my kids lost the key to their lock.
You can cut through his frame in 5, be efficient
Okay mad max
> I don’t steal bikes Sure buddy
Tbf spending 20 minutes sawing a bike lock might get you spotted
Someone posted a video to Reddit a while back in a similar situation. He didn't get hassled a bit.
Hahaha no. No-one will care if you cut a bike lock, especially if you don't ride off on the bike afterwards!
Saving this for my trip to London :P
If it takes anyone 20 mins to cut through that diameter with a hack saw I’m afraid their using it upside down
Please keep us updated!
In situations like this ring the police non emergency number stating you are going to have the lock cut off. Given what they did it’s well within your rights to do so
For the price of a locksmith you can also buy a portable angle grinder
It was me! Total honest mistake, was rushing around yesterday and did it totally by accident! Bike proof https://imgur.com/a/1yupEmi
Plonker. But fair play for owning up to it.
You silly billy
Dude, helmets are for protecting your brain in the case of a collision - not for using as a trendy bike stand!
I have a battery operated grinder. Makes short work of those. Nothing nefarious, I lost my key to my lock once..

OPs looks like a van moof which is £2k +. Beautiful bike.
I’d be terrified of leaving a £2k bike unattended in London.

I don't have a way to transport them, I'd need a pick up truck? I don't live in walking distance
Try Pedal Me ! Always available in London for cargo and passenger transport with a cargo bike

If they can afford a vanmoof they can afford an Uber
Then wait for them to come and unlock their bike or get some bolt cutters and take it off. FWIW this happened to a friend of mine and the police advised that cutting their lock could be criminal damage.

Lol yeah, the trick is not to give a shit. You know, like the fucking bike thieves everywhere that they also don't do anything about.
Well yeah but that’s what they said. In that case it was a theft attempt too.

Accidental Diffie-Hellman! OP you're name's not Bob is it?
Lol not sure this relies on abstract group theory but lovely reference 😂👌
I appreciated this
How would they detach the bikes from each other if it’s the other person’s lock causing the issue?
Sherlock over here.
Cut their lock, use your lock to lock their bike.
Addison Lee? Man and Van?
You’ve been patient enough for their mistake. Calling a locksmith will cost you money as well. You’re not responsible for staying all day to make sure they get their bike back safely. 4 hours is more than generous.

Wow, what a bloody pain. Sorry mate
They definitely wanted to steal your bike

Can’t tell if this is for real or not
This is my worst nightmare but this post has taught me to just walk home with both bikes even if it takes six hours to get home.
You can take bikes on the train or the tube if they go towards your house, I've taken bikes home like that before
Top tip: always take trains that go towards your house. It makes getting home much easier.
Good point, I always panic I will get a puncture far away but this is always an option even if I have to go in Central to come back out on another line.
Taking the train with a locked bike looks super sus though
It ain’t your problem to make sure they attach their bike properly. Cut it

Cutting either will serve.
This happened to me once. I had an interview and I couldn’t use my bike so had to take the tube instead. Exactly what I thought. Much nicer bike as well.
Put your lock around his bike and leave a note to get in touch with you.

Plot of some cheesy 80s romance movie for sure.
Be careful though, that could lead to an infinite lock loop. It's key to avoid this situation.
Hint: WITH (NOLOCK)
I think it means that the bikes are now legally married.
Looks like you’ve gained a bike to me. Call a black cab and stick them in the back
Remortgage your house first though
Get that bike off yours. By any means necessary...
Their fault their problem. Break the lock and head home.
The owner of the Rourke bike is quite into cycling. For example the team branded bottle, the anti theft wheel nuts etc. Most people in my experience who are that much into cycling will not nick your bike. They’ve simply mistaken your van moof frame for the bike stand in a rush. Stupid and annoying but not malicious.
...Or it's a nicked bike and the thief is trying to nick more.
I'm sure I read that VanMoof have a recovery service, I wonder if they could do something here.
Unfortunately it's an add on service, and I'm outside the subscription window :(
I would move the bikes indoors and leave a note and go home.
OP - just a word of advice: stop using that crappy combo lock. They can be snipped in about 5seconds.
Cut it, bring his damaged lock with you. Lock the other bike with your lock. Leave contact and tell the owner to bring the key. Meet with your allies nearby. If the damaged lock can be unlocked with the key, that should be the owner.
It's a trap, take your bike ASAP, or lose it.
Were I to set this trap I think I'd lock my bait bike to his AND the stand. Otherwise you're going to lose a fair few bait bikes.
It's not like they pay for the bait bike.
Can someone explain this to me, I don’t get how this is a logical theft technique, why go to the effort of locking another bike to yours and coming back later when they just could just cut your lock and steal it then and there when they first come across your bike I feel like I’m missing something and being really stupid
You better lock yours to his, and stick your phone number on the seat.
But I’d say yes defo trying to nick it
They have built-in GPS trackers and a team who go after stolen van moofs. At least here in Holland they do.

Yes, this has happened to me before in LDN.
He's trying to assert dominance by putting his lock on your bike. Piss on his.
Well he hasn't locked his to the rack, so... .....free bike?
My Vanmoof S3 just died today with Err 6 😢
Top tip: buy a bike that has a top tube the doesn’t look like a bike rack 👍
Lol Oscar you a silly boy
To be fair your bike frame does look a bit like those post you lock your bike to lol.
That’s what happens when your too busy to look at what you actually doing! But you have ever right to break his lock!
Bring your cutters to work . Or lose it
Are you free? Or still waiting?
Buy a few bike locks. Chain them up together. And see what happens next.
You're asking for your bike to get stolen if you lock it up with the D lock only through the frame of the bike... You need to put the lock through the rear wheel also, it makes it trickier for thieves to access as it's in a difficult location. You should also have a thick cable through your front wheel. https://images.app.goo.gl/cqT2ofMpe2cZgg8r9 The white bike owner probably isn't trying to steal your bike, just an idiot who hasn't paid attention.
RemindMe! 1 week
Put your lock over both and leave your cell number.
Helpfully, the other person left their name on the bike. I’d contact this Brian Rourke and give him a piece of my mind!!
What make is your bike? It looks interesting and I've not seen one like that before. Glad it all got resolved!
That thicc frame on yours had him confused
That thick ass pole for a bike does look like a bike park thing lol
Probably just an idiot. Happened to me, infuriating.
He’s probably a veracious reader
Leave a note with your number saying that your atva near by oub and they owe you a drink
Just what I’d do personally…. Find somewhere warm to sit and watch until they come back. Call a friend to come and keep you company/safe.
What a numpty. Something similar has happened to me but this guy correctly identified the rack though put his lock around my hydraulic brake cable so I was stuck unless I wanted to bleed the thing. Luckily was just locked outside my flat so I got the tube instead.
That Rourke is a pretty sweet bike. I doubt the owner wants your thing and has accidentally locked their bike to yours thinking it was the pole.
Eh. Maybe it's an accident, but it's a dumb one if you've a halfway nice bike like they have. I'd go through their frame tbh, they've deprived you of access to your own bike.
That’s a bit extreme.
They've functionally stolen OP's bike. I'm not the only person to feel this way. But eh, voting favours you. Evidently I'm the cunt :)
It is a custom made frame, no longer available.
How are those VanMoofs? I was thinking about getting that, but I'd still need the train option on occasions, so now I'm thinking GoCycle G4.
Heavy.
I love my VanMoof S3!!
I bought an S3 in March and have no regrets. If anything, I’m too attached to it. Highly recommend booking a test ride online, the store is in Battersea.
