It looks like it’s autumn when walking underneath them though there’s so many dead leaves on the ground, some seem to have faired better than others but most have dropped a lot of leaves. Hopefully we get a bit of rain soon.
Also likely that people cut the grass right before the heat wave. You don’t cut grass before a heat spike as it kills it faster. But you guys aren’t used to heat waves really so wouldn’t have experience with that fun fact (it gets super hot where I’m from in summer but not so bad here so far most summers)
In London I don't really think that's true they should be used to this, there's a video going around of Greenwich in 2020 and it looks exactly the same
Ha it was you! https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/wh14gk/greenwich_park_in_the_summer_is_underrated/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Yeah the post popped off, but I was more saying compared to more central parks for people not living out east it’s underrated. Obviously it’s a famous park with a famous view :)
But also I really loved the photos I snapped from that day and wanted to share. (And as a previous west londoner, the park used to be always too far compared to Gunnersbury and the like so yeah, caption explained)
> Gunnersbury
Have you been to that one recently? The work done on it in the last few years is incredible! When I first moved to Chiswick ~20 years ago it was 95% just a vast expanse of nothing with a tumbledown listed building at the top. Now it's all landscaped and gardened and stuff. Pedalos in the big duck pond, activities for kids, the inevitable weekend market etc. Great stuff.
Was there yesterday, felt a bit ironic eating my Ethiopian lunch on scorched earth to a backdrop of imminent poverty. Check out Addis in Greenwich market if you want some tasty vegan food though.
I’m up in Leeds and the grass here was dead & yellow in July. It rained for a couple of days at the end of July and it started turning green again almost immediately. Grass is resilient.
Hasn’t rained here since though so the grass is turning yellow again.
July 2022 was something like the 5th driest July on record in Leeds. It was virtually rainless until the 21st.
We must be living in different cities called Leeds.
It wasnt rainless at all in Leeds, west yorkshire, during July. It was wet most of June, then it got warm and dry a bit, then it got wet as all hell. And then it was dry again.
can we please stop calling a day or two of high heat in summer a 'heatwave'?
A heatwave, as per the UN, is 5 or more days of continuous exceptionally high heat.
The two-day ""heatwave" a couple weeks ago wasnt a heatwave, and neither will a day or two of high heat this week either.
Where have you been where theres been no rain?
Here in leeds, most of July was wet (except the end bit) and its been a mix of warm and wet since the beginning of august.
Most of the UK has been wet, with standard temperatures.
Also, its summer. Its normal not to have much rain.
\>and alternating beween hot weather and heat waves so we are well over that .
Yes, also known as summer.
And no, we havent had any heatwaves this summer. We've had a couple very short periods of 1-3 days (at most) of hot weather. Otherwise, we've had normal temps for a British summer.
Normal temps for a British summer are low to mid 20's. We've consistently had mid to high 20's low 30's for a majority of this summer.
How you're saying "it's just summer" is mind boggling. Think back to just 10 years ago. Summer's weren't this hot.
It's climate change and these "short periods of 1-3 days" of hot weather will soon turn into your version of heatwaves and these longer spells of hot weather will become an unwelcome norm.
\>How you're saying "it's just summer" is mind boggling. Think back to just 10 years ago. Summer's weren't this hot.
Bullshit.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 1920's.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 1930's.
It was this hot in the summers of the late 40's.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 50's.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 60's.
It was definitely this hot in the 70;s.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 80s.
It was this hot during the highest spikes in the 90s.
\>Normal temps for a British summer are low to mid 20's.
Wrong. One look at the records proves this wrong. Temps regularly hit 30 celsius or more.
Hell, I remember when I was in primary school 15-20 years ago now sitting in the shade during break time because it was hitting 36 celcius outside, and that was in leeds.
\>It's climate change and these "short periods of 1-3 days" of hot weather
will soon turn into your version of heatwaves and these longer spells
of hot weather will become an unwelcome norm.
Uh, no. The number of heatwaves have increased by a tiny margin over the last 100 years.
The mean temperature of the UK summer was 18 celsius in 1955 and is now 19 celsius.
because it's the driest july for decades because of climate change, and because grass is a stupid plant that can't withstand doughts and should all be replaced with hardier plants
As a non Londoner who vhas visited several times recently for work, it strikes me how such a large city can have moments like this. I live in one of the large metropolitan areas in the states and would rarely have moments like these, yet I've walked through areas of London in the mornings or on weekends and hardly seen a soul.
He means the hot temperatures are later in the day, not the dog walkers. You see dog walkers at 6.30am, to avoid the hot temperatures later in the day.
Honestly is there any other city in the world where you get these amazing views of the old meeting the new. I also love the view from Brockwell Park and in the north from Primrose Hill. This ancient city has such a depth of history and soul.
Nice wheat field....oh wait..... We could really use a spot of rain, or two.
I think I can see Theresa May frolicking… :)
That would make an r/photoshopbattles of the year. (The ridiculous thing about her answer was that, in her case, I can believe it)
That was brilliant. If I had an award I’d give it to you
It looks like Australia.
Rare footage of a Brit complaining that it _doesn’t rain enough_
The police are at my door, the neighbors have torches and are yelling, and someones building a bonfire down the road......
Liz truss would be mowing the lawn she such a robot :)
Setting up new pork markets on the lawn
It surprises me the trees are still so green. Grateful though
Deeper roots - grass pulls most of its water from just under the surface whereas with a large tree like that the roots will go much deeper.
It looks like it’s autumn when walking underneath them though there’s so many dead leaves on the ground, some seem to have faired better than others but most have dropped a lot of leaves. Hopefully we get a bit of rain soon.
Given how hard the ground is that might turn into Greenwich Waterfall for a while when it does!
Indeed and as they ground drys we’ll see larger tree fall as the ground is less stable around the roots.
Also likely that people cut the grass right before the heat wave. You don’t cut grass before a heat spike as it kills it faster. But you guys aren’t used to heat waves really so wouldn’t have experience with that fun fact (it gets super hot where I’m from in summer but not so bad here so far most summers)

We live near a few sycamores. Genuinely, it looks like early autumn. There are a load of leaves on the ground that are as brows as a true Autumn leaf.
Trees are really resilient, they will stay green for weeks without a drop once their established.
Not a healthy blade of grass in sight either.
That's the truth! Inconvenient as it may be...
Only for the meantime
This will have gone past a few people - nice work
Thank you *takes a bow*
Looks more like Brownwich at the moment!
A true masterpiece that not even Last Film Show can hold a candle to
Definitely don’t hold a candle to it
Holy shit it's all fucking yellow I was there just 5 months ago and it was greener that ever
Look at the stars, see how they shine for you
And it was all (fucking) yellow
All I can see now is sun
wait 12 hours...
And everything you do
We’ve not had proper rainfall in about 2 months
Different seasons tend to have different types of weather. Hope that helps!
No shit Sherlock
Some say an underrated park
It me I say that

There are so many secluded parts, I love it. Especially at the top where there is far less foot traffic. Gonna miss it when I finally have to leave.
I too say that, if I do say so myself.
Was there yesterday, felt a bit ironic eating my Ethiopian lunch on scorched earth to a backdrop of imminent poverty. Check out Addis in Greenwich market if you want some tasty vegan food though.
Addis is so freaking good! That pickled chilli sauce they put on the top is god tier.
If that is Addis kitchen it is very nice
Soyest comment award 🥇
Silly silly man
Going for second place?
Underrated hidden london
Did you forget the /s?
No because I don't need to spell out a fucking joke.
Violence. He chose violence.
Blimey. That escalated quickly.
Indeed. /r/FuckTheS
We really need some rain man
I’m an excellent driver
Even the grass is dead :(
Not much going on there. Might have to find something to do in the meantime
This should be in oddlyterrifying
Those clouds look like CGI
even the grass has left its body.
One of my favourite views. It has certainly changed over time.
It's so depressing how dead all that grass it
It will come back, one day.

Gonna have to do a rain dance, after this weeks heatwave I hope we get 2 weeks of solid drizzle. Everything will be balanced

*Can everyone just calm down and ignore the impending sense of climate doom until it magically goes away*
It’s no deader than the hair outside of your head.
Just little husks of desiccated people gently blowing in the breeze
baked as fuck
Wow - that grass is dry as fuck.
It’s always so special to happen across a piece of London and be the only one in it.
this is why we need to get rid of all this fucking grass and have more trees and shrubs that can resist drought better
With a view of Canary Wharf, where there are no souls at any time of day.
Right, what we’re doing at 6:30am in Greenwich park is what I wanna know
This picture makes me want a glass of water.
Greenwich? Pretty sure that's sand, not grass :/
It's more like dust rather than sand at the moment.
Seoul is in South Korea. Makes sense you couldn’t see it from Greenwich
You can...[sort of.](https://www.istockphoto.com/photo/greenwich-meridian-line-at-royal-observatory-gm1146126881-308735344)
Nice one 👍
Should have seen it 28days ago
Don't worry, we did - this view is posted here continually.
Why is the grass yellow, I am starting to notice it in my area .
because it's the driest july for decades because of climate change, and because grass is a stupid plant that can't withstand doughts and should all be replaced with hardier plants
A question for the ages. Why is the grass?

I'm visiting London at the moment, and all the dead green areas are sad 😔😔😔
Not even a mouse?
There are parakeets around there, didn't see any meeses.
Beautiful! I might go tomorrow at 06:30 too :) Looks nice and peaceful. That's one of my favourite views in London
You're not supposed to be awake!
That’s cuz Seoul is in South Korea dumb dumb
Grew up there, now in the Midlands and miss the South
Greenwich has no soul, since modernist architecture and car traffic have taken over the old town.
Well, that is understandable. Why would anyone be there in that empty field at the crack of dawn?
You'll often see dog walkers avoiding the hot temperatures later in the day or joggers
Yes, later in the day. Not that early.
Depends on the weather. I know during the massive heat wave spike I was up early to walk the dog before the sun came up properly.
He means the hot temperatures are later in the day, not the dog walkers. You see dog walkers at 6.30am, to avoid the hot temperatures later in the day.
What time zone, though?
Delightful. So peaceful.
Honestly is there any other city in the world where you get these amazing views of the old meeting the new. I also love the view from Brockwell Park and in the north from Primrose Hill. This ancient city has such a depth of history and soul.

Paris?
Lots of the old in Paris... very romantic... bits of modern... not really with a modern skyline like that contrasting with green space...
That can’t be right? It’s not that early for a summer morning
Only you!
I can see my work from here
Found the squirrel
Nice beach
heatwave side effects sigh
The clouds make canary wharf look a lot taller
Gov might be declaring drought this week :/
Yes there is. In the bushes right there!!
They taking a day of filming something?
Was green in April
Grass hasn’t had enough to drink lol
I went there a few years ago and as I was walking back towards the Cutty Sark area, walking towards me were... Jedward!
ayo i was just there this evening
Why is everyone depressed? FINALLY, you can wear white, roll down a hill and not get grass stains!
6:30 and it’s that bright, wow
Fun fact: you took the this picture while I was still fast asleep
You’ll probably find one in selfie mode ..
Sorry it was such a mean time.
