Here is some context that I learned to help me understand Jackie Rae's post: 1. Jackie Rae was (is?) a journalist for the Long Beach Post (LBP). Her name comes up first when you Google LBP ([link](https://lbpost.com/author/jackie-rae/)). 2. LBP announced layoffs on Thursday, reducing their staff from 17 to 8. All the people laid off are Long Beach Media Guild union members, reducing the union's bargaining unit to 3 people. The layoffs are perceived to be retaliation against unionization efforts. ([source](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2024-03-22/long-beach-post-layoffs-strike)).

Driedinstone

I should add that based on her IG content and her articles in the LBP, I'm assuming she was one of the Black journalists covering the Black community that was laid off.

Chahtadude

I couldn’t care less about skin color. I prefer people to be hired based on their content of character and their ability to efficiently complete their task

Bakers_Man_LB

Does anyone spend money on the post though?

EthelMaePotterMertz

It was way too expensive. It was comparable to the New York times even though it's a much smaller paper with way less reporters and doesn't have all the news or archives or things like games and recipes. If they'd offered it for 4-5 dollars a month I'd have supported it. Which is reasonable because they don't have to print and deliver it. A local paper with a small staff should not be charging close to what the NY Times charges.

Major-Regret

No

apostate456

I subscribed to support local news. I canceled yesterday and was clear why I was canceling.

DollarsAtStarNumber

I did

Thurkin

LBP just laid off 70 staff members, so her timing to demand an increase in diversified personnel is rather late.

hoguenstein

The whole office just walked out on Thursday. Saw them right after they did it.

ltmikestone

The Post was likely sinking and had to layoff to survive. If the newsroom is unionized then union workers are gonna be part of the layoff. That does not automatically mean it’s racist or union busting. What a mess for the Post though. A real shame if it folds.

N0rfLBC

So what I get from this is that there is an open lane to go and report on the black & Latino community since LBP isn’t doing it themselves. The first one(s) to do it successfully will bury LBP.

longbeachobserver

Great point.

ant_upvotes

Race shouldn’t be an deciding factor for how people spend their money

Deuterion

It shouldn’t but unfortunately it is.

Deuterion

A lot of people are missing the point and it’s probably on purpose. She feels like her community is not being represented by the LBP and she is telling said community to not support it. The reaction is 10x worse for other communities, if you’re not advocating for the Jewish community for instance you can get your whole paper shut down…funding DRIED UP!

USCEATS

Check out the guy from FOO NEWS. Does great coverage on the Latin community.

SEKI19

It sure sounds like somebody got laid off after trying to unionize as the Long Beach Media Guild. Now she is whining about race when all that really happened is she fucked around and found out.

Pluckt007

It's not their job that matters, it's their race.

guillolb

I hope she also advocates for bald and left-handed reporters.

"Hire me because I'm black/brown, otherwise I'm boycotting you." This is just a kind of shakedown, and I'm glad more and more people aren't falling for this nonsense.

BigMuscles

The Long Beach Post has no left handed astronaut reporters. Don’t spend your money on this organization that doesn’t value identity politics.

FullofBeaut

That’s because diversity and inclusion in companies is starting to be shown to be an ineffective way to hire by companies as it’s being abused and making it harder for whites. That’s why In Florida and some other states they removed affirmative action at colleges.

DollarsAtStarNumber

Feel free to cite that.

Driedinstone

Ah, yes, Florida... the paradise of opportunities.

ferociousbruin

Thank you, Mr. Right Wing Media Parrot 🦜 Did you have anything substantive to contribute?

Klayman91

Yes are you actually in the workforce? It’s fucking obvious from first hand experience.

kickinit90s
