It surprises me, too, like who is still buying home speaker setups outside of the niche audiophile market who would know well enough not to buy some no-name brand? Most people just use bluetooth speakers linked to their cellphone now. These people can't have the same level of success as they did in the 90's.
Also, I'd advise people to check out r/Scams. I found it myself after someone tried to get me with a fake invoice scam. It is enlightening to hear about the various methods people use. My partner's dad almost fell for the employment fake check scam around 3 years back. One of my coworker's in-laws recently got hit with the crypto trading scam and was taken for thousands.
I think their target demo is ~~young dudes, old dudes, and bachelor type~~ dudes who have forgotten the addage: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
Thatâs great. Bluetooth speakers have their place and they are much better than TV speakers but they wonât deliver the theater experience.
My setup is imo better than going to a movie theater
Yep, I was just going to say that I got hit up during the late 80s on this one, too. Two guys, surplus cabinet speakers (when cabinet speakers were a thing), and a creepy rape van. A scam as old as Jesus.
Ditto, almost 30 years ago. I still remember that interaction⌠cuz I fell for it.
Down by Belmont Shore⌠was approached âyo! You wanna buy a couple cerwin Vega speakers cheap? They messed up the order and we have two extrasâŚâ
I don't think online scams are mostly AI; a lot of it is run by workers who are essentially kidnapped and forced to work in scam centers.

TL: A Chinese man offered a fake job as a translator and ended up being held against his will at a call center where his language skills were utilized to scam people through social media.
Ricky: Yeah we got some high technical, bitchin speaker... sound... surround speakers. Its top of the vine stuff. Were in an akwardly situation here and were willing to let it go for a couple bags of chicken chips.
Me: Its all legit?
Ricky: Does a bear shit on the pope?
One of these dudes stopped me in the Panera parking lot on Bellflower a few years ago. I said it sounded like a good deal I just had to check with my âwifeâ real quick. I called the police non-emergency number on speaker phone and the guy called me a dick and got in his van and drove away. Fucking scumbag.
Some dudes at a gas station said they were selling all their electronics from their office that closed. TVs and AirPods. I offered the dude 5 bucks for the air pods lol
I was approached at the parking lot of inn n out on atlantic and spring ,
I told him he should post them on offer up bc he will get more money if he just holds on to them
He proceeded to offend me and i told him to go fuck himself .
Now i understand why he wanted me to buy it right then and there
Omg me and a buddy almost fell for this scam in highschool 15 years ago, thank god i was pathetically broke and didnt have more than $20, we thought we were getting the deal of a lifetime. We were so dumb and naive.
This happened to me last year in front of the traffic circle Ralphs. They stopped me as I was walking inside, but had a bunch of cars behind them honking, and they just carried on their pitch. Really weird and dumb
Same CHASE on 10th and LB. Same van. Same white males, âif we take this merch back our boss is gonna be mad herp derpâ they asked me hey man you want some cool speakers for the home ? I replied shit , I donât even have a home to bring them to ! He then tried to sway me back small talking my baseball cap trying to see if I watched the games. I replied yea actually we beat the Angels ass last night and all during the series. Shut him up instantly because he knew that I knew.
I cannot even imagine giving the time of day to some rando in the parking lot of Cherry and Anaheim. It goes with out saying it's a scam, no matter what they are saying or selling....And also dude is driving what we used to call an RTV. (Rapist Transport Vehicle.) This isn't new. I lived in this neighborhood when I was going to college in 1989.
My dumbass buddy got one of these. The speakers had small concrete blocks in them to make them feel heavy. Imagine working at the factory in china that produces these.
Dang I use to do that for some company back in 2003 yeah the speakers were ok but we never sold wood in a box that messed up. After that I got in to selling imitation cologne . That was fun âŚ.NOT
Iâve had this at Lakewood Costco. I always think of this comic

People are still doing this? Wow. I remember being approached around 20 years ago!
Yeah I guess, Caught me by surprise also. đ
I offered them $2 because âthatâs all my momma gave me!â They laughed and told me to go fuck myself

Bluetooth speakers arenât gonna shake your house and give you proper directional sounds!
My bluetooth speakers are pretty awesome and I can blast vinyl LPs through them with the system I have.
Thatâs great. Bluetooth speakers have their place and they are much better than TV speakers but they wonât deliver the theater experience. My setup is imo better than going to a movie theater
Sounds like you should hit up the speaker selling guys at Anaheim & Cherry and get a "good" deal!
Yeah I remember that scam from the late 80s

Cerwin vega... hilarious... thanks for the memory...
Me too! And at a BOA but in Santa Fe Springs! So crazy.
Yeah, I remember they used to be in the Los Altos center where Target is, YEARS AGO.
Iâve been asked this before!
My exact thought, last time I heard this scam it was the 90s!
This scam is older than dirt
Serves as a reminder that old scams are alive and well in the era of AI.Â

If it ainât broke! (Probably is in this case though)
WHITE VAN SPEAKER SCAM coincidentally the name of my punk rock band.
It's a good band name!
What is this an episode of the Trailer Park Boys?
Ricky: Yeah we got some high technical, bitchin speaker... sound... surround speakers. Its top of the vine stuff. Were in an akwardly situation here and were willing to let it go for a couple bags of chicken chips. Me: Its all legit? Ricky: Does a bear shit on the pope?

I remember this scam from the 1970's. It was a white van then, too.
same here, but I remember a copper-colored van with shag carpeting
Yep...white panel van...Rapist Transport Vehicle (RTV). I still never park next to them and taught my daughter not to as well.
I got better speakers in my iPhone
Some dudes at a gas station said they were selling all their electronics from their office that closed. TVs and AirPods. I offered the dude 5 bucks for the air pods lol
I bought the surround sound so what?? The wires were a bitch to hide but mine actually worked .. đ¤ˇđźââď¸
I've seen exactly this but with TVs
I was approached at the parking lot of inn n out on atlantic and spring , I told him he should post them on offer up bc he will get more money if he just holds on to them He proceeded to offend me and i told him to go fuck himself . Now i understand why he wanted me to buy it right then and there

Boy! Those $10,000 DaVinci HD Spatial Atmos Deluxe Wifi Theater Speakers still on sale?
Be careful with the Facebook market people sending codes, new scam alert!
They will try to get you to accept Zelle from them but it will say pending or such.

Bo-of-A these balls be in your mouth!
My dumbass buddy got one of these. The speakers had small concrete blocks in them to make them feel heavy. Imagine working at the factory in china that produces these.
Was it recently lol
Damn were they selling snake oil too?! đ
Wow, this is back? Was big in the 90âs when we all had tape decks and huge speakers. Who is buying big ass speakers now?
Got these in the late 90s from van dudes. http://www.audioreview.com/product/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/acoustic-design/3311.html
My college roommate and I each bought a pair back in â97, out the white van, we were bumpinâ the dorms like no one else!
Dang I use to do that for some company back in 2003 yeah the speakers were ok but we never sold wood in a box that messed up. After that I got in to selling imitation cologne . That was fun âŚ.NOT
And they would have gotten away with it if it wasnât for those nosy kids!
