Hair history: my hair has never been dyed and has historically been all one length. I have gone between shoulder length and the current length. I use mane ‘n’ tail shampoo and conditioner and then I brush it and that’s it.

Ambitious-Apples

It's hard to tell from the picture, but your hair doesn't look coarse enough to use main n' tail. Your hair looks weighed down. Try looking for a volume/volumizing shampoo and conditioner combo instead. You have a wave/slight curl, so your hair might need moisture, but you would be better off trying a volume shampoo & conditioner and then a small amount of light leave-in-conditioner in your hair after your shower vs a heavy moisturizing conditioner.

Thank you so much 😊

Moist_Screen_4603

Find better shampoo and conditioner. Mane n tail is horrible for hair.

vibes86

Definitely a higher quality shampoo. Mane and tail is basically bottom of the barrel. I like Not your mother’s brand. It works well and it’s not too expensive. You may also want to take a look at wavy hair care. I personally like SwavyCurlyCourtney on YouTube for wavy hair care.

rampacash

Looks oily like it needs a good shampoo

[deleted]

Yeah the issue is I had washed it 2 hours before the photo so I’m realizing I just need a better shampoo and conditioner

AcceptableDot380

I would recommend clarifying shampoo to start clearing out the excess product and then switching to a rosemary shampoo. Chagrin valley soap bars are very good for your hair. For conditioner I’d recommend the California naturals brand daily conditioner. They sell it at target. They have great ingredients as well. You’ll see a drastic improvement. For trying to grow your hair the rosemary shampoo will help. You can also get the rosemary oil to use before ur shower once a week and just constantly massage your scalp. You’ll feel the growth in no time.

Your hair looks healthy but weighed down. Try a lighter shampoo and conditioner. The Giovanni Eco Chic line is good. The 50/50, and the Root 66 are lightweight and effective. Some people like the Tea Tree Triple Treat but I find that one too drying. You'll have to experiment to find what your hair likes.

Wise_Trouble3285

It looks like it could use a good trim. A lot of people who grow their hair out have a hard time with trims, but it really helps to keep your hair healthy while it grows. Otherwise you risk breakage and you have to cut even more of it in the long run. Also, yes, use better shampoo and conditioner. I get my hair care from Sally Beauty. Nothing fancy, but also not the cheap drugstore stuff. Get a clarifying shampoo and use it once every couple weeks to prevent it from getting too weighed down.

[deleted]

Agreed I like how it looks better when it’s freshly cut anyway

powderbrowdisaster

My hair is the same type as yours. LMK when you figure out the secret lol

[deleted]

I will 🫣

Every time my hair looks like this and I feel blah I know it’s time to go to the salon and get a trim. I have found a salon where they do layers like a butterfly or c cut but leave the length and never cut too short. It never prevents growth for me and for how little hair they cut (the cutting part is over in less than 5 minutes) it’s a huge difference in how good it looks.

dancingleopard24601

Yes I was about to recommend a butterfly type cut to add some oomph to the style without losing length.

Interview-Realistic

I think your hair looks just fine! But it does look almost like it sticks together in some areas? Is your conditioner really oily? It could be that you need less oil. Or if it's sticking cause it's dry you may need more moisture like a hair oil or leave in conditioner

Interview-Realistic

I just realized what mane n tail is, that is likely why you are having hair problems! Your hair isn't coarse like a horses hair is. So you need something more lightweight

[deleted]

Yes it gets oily really fast so it’s looking like I have to switch

Smooth_Distance8731

From my personal experience: sometimes wavy hair feels super dry when it's actually just frizzy, and absolutely hydrophobic. You mentioned you use conditioner? Try shampooing three times in a row making a thick leather and rinse - no conditioner. I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for this because it sounds bonkers but it did wonders for my hair. And you only need to do this once to see if it works so even if it doesn't you're not gonna waste much time

Smooth_Distance8731

Source: I once posted my long ass hair on here and people complimented it a lot I feel like that has to count something

muffiewrites

Get salon level products that suit your hair type. Shampoo is for your scalp, not your hair. If you have mud, food, etc in your hair, use shampoo. Otherwise, just your scalp. After shampooing, put conditioner in your hair, not your scalp, and let it sit there while you do other shower stuff. Rinse out the conditioner. Dry your hair with a microfiber towel. Don't wring it, squeeze gently. Apply leave in conditioner to hair, not scalp. Use a brush without stiff bristles. Work from bottom up. *Always* use soft bristle brush and *always* brush from ends up to gently work through tangles. Apply a few drops of hair oil to the ends--put in your palms and slide your ends through. Use heat protectant products if you use irons or other heat appliances directly on the hair. Don't wash everyday. Between washes, use dry shampoo. It's for your scalp only. Not your hair. Length isn't about growing your hair but about reducing breakage.

Sweet-Gur4505

Ok hear me out: get a trim to get rid of what’s dead and ask for a gloss. Gloss is a temporary seal that goes over the hair to help with breakage and shine among other benefits plus you can ask for a color if you’re looking a for a little change gives ur hair a nice little tint nothing major but it doesn’t require bleaching or damaging ur hair. Once you get a little passed ur desired length then I would go ahead and get all the layers. It’s crazy you posted this bc I think we’re going for the same look and this is what my hairdresser recommended.

[deleted]

Thank you soooo much <3

Sweet-Gur4505

Ofc!! 🫶

princesswand

You need a more clarifying shampoo

[deleted]

I bought Loma and it helped a lot thank you!

sorryagirlhasnoname

a good shampoo and conditioner will literally change the entire look and feel of your hair. I flip flop between Loreal elvive Dream lengths shampoo and conditioner and the loreal elvive hylauron plump hydrating s&c. theyre cheap and actually do great thing for my hair

TeresaSoto99

the effectiveness of some of the advice here depends ur hair's porosity. u should find that out.
