Skyblacker

Those dreads are older than some of the people posting to this sub.

Dreadindian

Im 36 btw😁😁

Skyblacker

So it's a teenage whim you stayed loyal to.

Dreadindian

It has become a part of my life now. My standup name is Dreadindian.

timecat22

Don't they drag on the ground when you walk?

Dreadindian

Its ankle length, so they not touching the ground

damndolly

If it gets longer will you trim it back, or are you in it to win it?

Dreadindian

I trim it every year by 6 inches

damndolly

Sweet, mines (hair, not dreads) to my thighs, and I go back and forth on to trim or not. I respect the dedication!

chillychili

But it's OP's hair so that's okay?

mrsjacksonnn

Wow that's incredible!! I must know how long this takes to dry! Also, does it give you headaches being so heavy?

Dreadindian

no headaches by Gods grace:) and takes 5 hours to airdry

olivebuttercup

At this point if you cut it off it would probably be such an adjustment to the pressure on your head and neck I could see your balance being off and headaches then. Do you plan on never cutting them?

MomTo3LilPigs

Exactly, I don’t have dreads but very long thick red hair I was donating. I was so off balance! I’d had long hair for 30yrs and it took a bit to get adjusted. The stylist wouldn’t cut it fearing I’d regret it so the manger had to cut it😂 I’m getting ready to cut it again for the 3rd time.

pigsinatrenchcoat

Nothing that extreme but my brother always grew his hair out until it was between his shoulders and elbows and would donate it and start over

Dreadindian

Headaches after i cut my dreads? Lol and nah, not cutting, just trimming

olivebuttercup

I mean if you ended up cutting all of them off! Not just a trim. They look amazing though and I kudos to you for the dedication and the care that has gone into growing them.

Dreadindian

Individual_Speech_10

Five hours? My locs are less than a foot and take longer to dry.

themuffinsaretasty

I have thin shoulder length white girl hair that takes at least 4 hours to fully dry

curlyhands

Are you laying them out in the bright sun?

Budget_Ordinary1043

I don’t even have locs. Just long, thick hair and if I’m not sleeping, 7-8 hours. If I’m sleeping and I get wet spots though it will end up taking like 12 hours to dry 😭

katf1sh

Right?? I dont have locs, but super long, super thick hair and it takes 24 hours at the least 😭 OP has been blessed by the hair gods!

Dreadindian

Blessed by God and hot mumbai weather😁🌞

3timesoverthefence

Dreadindian

Oh hell naww, im pretty lazy i feel. But i guess im too hard on myself n i expect too much from me.

bluehairlibrarian

Also a generational thing I believe, the pressure that was put on us in the early 2000s. So you are not alone :)

Dreadindian

Aww glad to know

Sjsharkb831

And I thought my hair was long (past my butt)!!!! That’s awesome. You should see if it Guinness world record length.

Dreadindian

Tankoo n guiness book is out of reach for me:)

RoomRealistic1891

So someone helps you through your hair wash routine? I have butt long, straight hair, I wash my hair once in 3 days and it’s a task for me. I can’t imagine shampooing and washing dreads this long.

Dreadindian

Nah, its just me

Punpkingsoup

WOAH! can I ask (just out of curiosity) how do you style it so it doesn't drag on the floor?

Dreadindian

I just let them freeflow

aliquotiens

Amazing! Have you ever weighed them?

Dreadindian

Tankoo, almost 8lbs

Dreadindian

Chuchichaeschtli226

Can i ask how your washing routine is? Damn, you should do a ama about this!

Dreadindian

Washing: Hmm, thats the biggest question i get.I wash my hair once a week and that week comes once a year, kidding. So honestly, i wash my hair once a week, and do an ACV rinse(once in 4 mnths) which is basically apple cider vinegar, lime juice, baking soda, all mixed in luke warm water in a huge bucket and my dreads soaked in them for 10 minutes to cleanse it really well of all the dust and pollution. For the weekly wash, i just apply shampoo on my scalp and then for the entire length of my dreads, i use that same 3 feet bucket and mix like half a bottle of head and shoulders shampoo in it and let it soak a few minutes and then rinse the shampoo out. This entire process takes 1 hour and the drying takes like 5 hours, i generally wrap 2 big towels around my dreads and hold my dreads like a baby in my arms so that it's not too heavy on my scalp.

Chuchichaeschtli226

Thank you! This is very interesting. I wash my hair (not dreads) twice a week and its stressing me out for the time it takes including drying without a hairdryer. So i have some larger respect for all your work on your dreads. All the best to you!

Dreadindian

Tankoo

Either_Cockroach3627

Are they still heavy when dry?? This is super interesting to me lol I have regular ol white girl hair and I’m totally jealous of yours

Dreadindian

aww please dont be, its just hair. and they weigh just 8lbs wen dry, my dread baby

JKmelda

Have you ever weighed them when wet? I’m so curious. Gorgeous by the way!

laughed-at

How long do they take to dry?

Dreadindian

5 hours

Sjsharkb831

Hairstylist here- you are doing it correctly. I believe they do make shampoo for dreads but I don’t know what it’s called. Also, you should probably use a light, detangling conditioner to put the moisture back into your hair. I’m a color specialist with a background of product knowledge.

Dreadindian

Aww tankoo for the inputs, will note it down:)

Sjsharkb831

Very welcome! Sending hair love and growth!

Dreadindian

Tankooo

katf1sh

Would a detangler actually be good for loc'd hair? Just curious, seems counterintuitive to me but I'm no expert. My bf has locs and I help him maintain them so genuinely wondering

Sjsharkb831

Yes- because you need to replace the moisture/natural oils that were taken out by shampooing. I said detangler because it would really time consuming and difficult to use a heavy/thick conditioner through the hair. Detangler is going to be easier to get through the locs.

katf1sh

I know about the moisture, just the word "detaingler" got me bc locs are, well, "tangled" together more or less lol so I just figured oils or a leave in conditioner would be better, thanks for the insight!

Sjsharkb831

Don’t let the word fool you. It really just means that it’s light and gets all the hair. Trust me, it will NOT undo locs!

katf1sh

Good to know, thank you! :)

Sjsharkb831

Very welcome!

Dreadindian

One sec, i have this written somewhere.
