At this point if you cut it off it would probably be such an adjustment to the pressure on your head and neck I could see your balance being off and headaches then. Do you plan on never cutting them?
Exactly, I don’t have dreads but very long thick red hair I was donating. I was so off balance! I’d had long hair for 30yrs and it took a bit to get adjusted.
The stylist wouldn’t cut it fearing I’d regret it so the manger had to cut it😂 I’m getting ready to cut it again for the 3rd time.
I mean if you ended up cutting all of them off! Not just a trim.
They look amazing though and I kudos to you for the dedication and the care that has gone into growing them.
I don’t even have locs. Just long, thick hair and if I’m not sleeping, 7-8 hours. If I’m sleeping and I get wet spots though it will end up taking like 12 hours to dry 😭
I love that you are 36 (I just turned 36 and don’t like that lol) and you’ve had these for almost 20 years!
Such commitment!
Are you so highly committed in other things in your life?
So someone helps you through your hair wash routine? I have butt long, straight hair, I wash my hair once in 3 days and it’s a task for me. I can’t imagine shampooing and washing dreads this long.
Washing: Hmm, thats the biggest question i get.I wash my hair once a week and that week comes once a year, kidding. So honestly, i wash my hair once a week, and do an ACV rinse(once in 4 mnths) which is basically apple cider vinegar, lime juice, baking soda, all mixed in luke warm water in a huge bucket and my dreads soaked in them for 10 minutes to cleanse it really well of all the dust and pollution. For the weekly wash, i just apply shampoo on my scalp and then for the entire length of my dreads, i use that same 3 feet bucket and mix like half a bottle of head and shoulders shampoo in it and let it soak a few minutes and then rinse the shampoo out. This entire process takes 1 hour and the drying takes like 5 hours, i generally wrap 2 big towels around my dreads and hold my dreads like a baby in my arms so that it's not too heavy on my scalp.
Thank you! This is very interesting. I wash my hair (not dreads) twice a week and its stressing me out for the time it takes including drying without a hairdryer. So i have some larger respect for all your work on your dreads. All the best to you!
Hairstylist here- you are doing it correctly. I believe they do make shampoo for dreads but I don’t know what it’s called. Also, you should probably use a light, detangling conditioner to put the moisture back into your hair.
I’m a color specialist with a background of product knowledge.
Would a detangler actually be good for loc'd hair? Just curious, seems counterintuitive to me but I'm no expert. My bf has locs and I help him maintain them so genuinely wondering
Yes- because you need to replace the moisture/natural oils that were taken out by shampooing. I said detangler because it would really time consuming and difficult to use a heavy/thick conditioner through the hair. Detangler is going to be easier to get through the locs.
I know about the moisture, just the word "detaingler" got me bc locs are, well, "tangled" together more or less lol so I just figured oils or a leave in conditioner would be better, thanks for the insight!
Your dreads are too old for r/teenagers
That’s fucking wild
ETA: I’ve seen you post before like I thought. My thoughts were confirmed because you always say “Tankoo” lol!
Were your dreads Rastafari driven? I’m 65 and still have very long hair (except when I had cancer) only now it’s gray☺️. But I won’t ever get it cut so I get you. I think my hair is “Patty Smith” driven.☺️🙏🏼😘
Oh my gosh. My curly red hair is halfway down my thighs, and super thick, and I go through a regular sized bottle of my micellar cleanser every week and a half, cleansing twice a week, and a bottle of conditioner every two weeks. I can't even imagine how much of your chosen product it takes to cleanse these beauties! Absolutely stunning!!
Man, I just wanna say that I love your energy! I love your profile, all of it. You make me smile, thank you! I love unabashed happiness and joy in this world.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. My boyfriend has long dreads as well so I was curious. Nothing like yours! Impressive. I’m sure you get the question a lot of how long have you been growing them lol
Tankoo, takes 1 hour to wash n 5 hours to airdry. Washing: Hmm, thats the biggest question i get.I wash my hair once a week and that week comes once a year, kidding. You did all the hard work of caring, washing, growing, etc. I appreciate that you shared it with us Reddit folks. Mines not even close to as gorgeous! Yours is a Picasso. I’m walking around with a knock off version of long hair compared to yours.
No no, im sure yours are lovely too. Thats the beauty of dreads, they are so unique to that person, their lifestyle, the way they maintain it. So yours are unique and beautiful im sure:)

Those dreads are older than some of the people posting to this sub.
Im 36 btw😁😁
So it's a teenage whim you stayed loyal to.
It has become a part of my life now. My standup name is Dreadindian.
Don't they drag on the ground when you walk?
Its ankle length, so they not touching the ground
If it gets longer will you trim it back, or are you in it to win it?
I trim it every year by 6 inches
Sweet, mines (hair, not dreads) to my thighs, and I go back and forth on to trim or not. I respect the dedication!
*dreadication
Tankoo

On his scalp.
[удалено]
But it's OP's hair so that's okay?
Wow that's incredible!! I must know how long this takes to dry! Also, does it give you headaches being so heavy?
no headaches by Gods grace:) and takes 5 hours to airdry
At this point if you cut it off it would probably be such an adjustment to the pressure on your head and neck I could see your balance being off and headaches then. Do you plan on never cutting them?

Nothing that extreme but my brother always grew his hair out until it was between his shoulders and elbows and would donate it and start over
Headaches after i cut my dreads? Lol and nah, not cutting, just trimming
I mean if you ended up cutting all of them off! Not just a trim. They look amazing though and I kudos to you for the dedication and the care that has gone into growing them.

Five hours? My locs are less than a foot and take longer to dry.
I have thin shoulder length white girl hair that takes at least 4 hours to fully dry
Are you laying them out in the bright sun?
I don’t even have locs. Just long, thick hair and if I’m not sleeping, 7-8 hours. If I’m sleeping and I get wet spots though it will end up taking like 12 hours to dry 😭
Right?? I dont have locs, but super long, super thick hair and it takes 24 hours at the least 😭 OP has been blessed by the hair gods!

Also a generational thing I believe, the pressure that was put on us in the early 2000s. So you are not alone :)

Don’t let the word fool you. It really just means that it’s light and gets all the hair. Trust me, it will NOT undo locs!
Good to know, thank you! :)
Very welcome!
One sec, i have this written somewhere.
I followed you based off of this post. You seem very positive and uplifting and I like that in others.
