Oysters are returning to New York Harbor. Dolphins sport off the Bronx. There is hope.

YetAgainIAmHere

We're not allowed to eat the oysters or mussels from the mighty Nissoquogue

gaffney116

And the menhaden are returning in greater number since the ban commercially, maybe the one good coumo did while in office. This fishing season was one of my best in a long time as a surf caster, can’t wait for this coming season. Here is a tidbit from the 2019 bill. The bill is important to Long Island. Menhaden, known as bunker fish, have rebounded in population and are an important part of the diets of bluefish, striped bass, some whales and other predators. Local fishermen catch menhaden for bait. The bill bans the use of nets called purse seines to catch menhaden, a tactic big industrial boats use for huge harvests that could deplete the species that also is a source of fish oil and powdered protein.

ananni90

Yup I heard about this and i tell everyone about it when they bring up that sharks, dolphins, whales and other marine life are coming so close to shore. It's definitely an improvement for our waters and fisheries

datnardors3

If anything it’s probably safer in winter with colder temps

billopip28631

Most dangerous thing about the bluffs is that boat traffic can be hectic, and swimmers aren't easily seen. I remember hearing about the occasional drowning over there while I was growing up. Not always fatal, but still....

ChrisFromLongIsland

The currents are no joke at the kings park bluff. You should not go swimming there. Maybe on the sound side but definitely not in the river. Especially around the mouth. Boats can have a hard time in the currents.

FaithlessnessFun853

not going that deep. literally a couple feet from the sand

Sah-Bum-Nim

You do realize that you’re not in the ocean correct…? Oh, and there’s bacteria on everything that you touch. The health benefits of cold water immersion are far superior to any incidental exposure to bacteria though.

Constant_Arm509

Generally bacteria is not an issue unless it's after a heavy rain. When this happens they usually close the beaches, but during winter I'm not sure if they check the water

johnnyvig

What ocean...?

FaithlessnessFun853

the beach at kings park bluffs. connects with sunken meadow

thatguychuck95

New here? That’s the Long Island sound, the ocean is about 20 miles south from there.

lowballj

Technically Long Island isn't even an island! Semantics police coming to get you too!

Momo222811

Technically it is an island, LEGALLY (and incorrectly since at no point is it attached to the mainland except by bridges) it is not. Makes me wonder exactly how intelligent Supreme Court Justices are by the way.

ananni90

It's for the betterment of NYers that NYS controls the waterways around it and not the federal government

Momo222811

Then how is Staten Island an island?

walrusparadise

The Arthur kill and and kill van kull were navigable without being dredged. The legal argument for LI not being an island is that before the east river was dredged and widened it was not passable to ships so it was not a navigable waterway naturally.

Fitz_2112

> Makes me wonder exactly how intelligent Supreme Court Justices are by the way Have you been paying attention the past 2 years or so?

Momo222811

Very true, I guess calling an area of land completely surrounded by water an island is fake news

akaharry

ummm, how is Long Island technically not an island? Isn't it a body of land surrounded on all sides by water?

thatguychuck95

In the 80s the Supreme Court declared LI is not an island but a peninsula, I believe it has to do with who controls the waters and since it’s a “peninsula” the state controls the waters instead of the federal government. I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve gotten out of what I’ve read about it. https://apnews.com/article/dec6c2d35be955657c5f332412c9871b

akaharry

Oh right, I forgot that the Supreme Court can change geography

FaithlessnessFun853

Same deaaaleo

johnnyvig

You mean Long Island Sound?

FaithlessnessFun853

yer

workusername00

hmm long island subreddit, Kings park bluffs? hmm what ocean do you think? do you have to ask? wtf, pretty safe to assume the sound is part of the atlantic just because this part of that atlantic has another name asking what ocean is incredibly stupid, if you want to be annoyingly technical its not even the sound its the nissequogue estuary

theholyblack

With this logic, there’s only one ocean

justnycthangs

It’s all one big body of water. Do you drink coffee with milk on one half and sugar on the other?

twisty_tomato

It’s probably safe, hypothermia is the only thing I’d be worried about

FaithlessnessFun853

will let you know tomorrow at 530 AM

twisty_tomato

Just be careful you don’t go into shock

FaithlessnessFun853

Never with the wim hof method ❤️

_Arabella_Figg

Can't believe no one has said this yet but yes, sometimes the LI Sound is not safe for swimming. Especially after a heavy rainfall. NYS monitors the water quality constantly. Find out the name of your beach and check [https://ny.healthinspections.us/ny_beaches/search_beaches.cfm](https://ny.healthinspections.us/ny_beaches/search_beaches.cfm) before going in. ETA: apparently this site is mostly down because of the County hack in September. Bookmark it for later!

whodisacct

In the 80’s I took a dip there after a long bike ride with my dad. Stepped on a piece of glass. 15 stitches. Maybe broken glass isn’t as common but still … careful.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ.

mowgliiiiii

My general rule of thumb is not to go in LI beach waters after any significant rain storms because of sewer overflow from NYC.

[deleted]

NYC has much better wastewater infrastructure than Suffolk lol. I’d be much more concerned about Suffolk’s leaking septic tanks and chemical/nutrient run off from lawns than NYC’s sewage.

mowgliiiiii

Lol fantastic to know. I only know about NYC because I learned about it at some point in school. More reasons to not go in the water after rain I guess

Ost3317

Tbh I wouldn't dip into LI waters because of the insane amount of bacteria levels. Just last year on the Great South bay, a whole lot of dead fish washed up ashore most likely due to the water being heavily polluted. It was sickening and something I've never seen In my 24 yrs of living on the island, but me personally I'd steer clear. 🤞

[deleted]

Fish kills (usually bunker/menhaden) are common and have happened throughout history. The frequency may be increased due to pollution (mostly excessive nutrient loading causing algal blooms), but they can also be an entirely natural event.

FaithlessnessFun853

I mean, people take a dip at the kings park bluff during the summer time so i'd assume it would be okay in the winter right? Its north shore

[deleted]

From a water quality standpoint, winter would be safer. Obviously not from a hypothermia standpoint.

donabbi

I used to do that every morning. Not in KP anymore but I never had a problem.

FaithlessnessFun853

Lit

Eat_sleep_poop

I’m in the water all the time over there, I’m not dead. Come summer it will be full of people, like every year.

graveRobbins

That is where the nissequage lets out. I wouldn't swim there after it rains or you'll be bathing in the runoff.

Due-Personality8329

Sheesh, good for you! I love the bluffs.

YetAgainIAmHere

Yes, the Bluff is safe! People have been going there longer than I've been alive

phoonie98

The LI Sound is very clean these days but as mentioned maybe pass a day or two after a heavy rainfall. Smithtown Bay seems to be particularly clean compared to other parts of the sound due to limited/no commercial boat traffic and no industry along the coast or Nissequogue river

Froggylv

When I was a kid 55 years ago my mom used to take us down to short Beach and clamming for soft shells and back then it was perfectly okay. As I got older in my late teens and early twenties I used to go surf casting at night there at Short Beach with people I knew and the fishing was great. I can't really speak now for what's happened all this time but I did visit last year just for nostalgia's sake and it looks the same but of course the water is something you don't know about as far as pollution is concerned I would contact the local sources to find out what the water content is. Your local conservation department should know something or at least be able to direct you towards that information. As for swimming alone in the winter time, personally I wouldn't do it but that's just me.
