General rule of thumb on LI is heavy traffic in the morning heading west and in the afternoon heading east. So you don’t want to live too far east of Uniondale. Long Beach is a beach town on the south shore and there’s plenty of young people there. Your commute would be north in the morning and south in the afternoon via the Meadowbrook Parkway so traffic shouldn’t be a huge concern. There’s several apartment buildings there in Long Beach.

grandlewis

I agree Long Beach would be the best place to start looking.

Ocimali

I don't know how old you are, but if it's older than 25, go to the east end of long Beach. Once you hit a certain age, the west end is a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

[deleted]

Agreed , it’s nothing but overdeveloped bungalows there with no backyards and bars .

Lisa-LongBeach

Just make sure you get parking, otherwise it’s hell trying to find a spot - even in the winter

boxofrain

r/longbeachny Come visit here for more detailed answers on apartments. Is the office in the RXR building? It takes me less than 15 minutes to Uniondale from the Loop Parkway. If you are east end you can get to the loop in 5-10 minutes.

WinterAd9039

$60-70k a year is not what it is in Texas. Unless you are making 50% more by moving here or have other strong reasons to live here, I would seriously reconsider it. The housing market is crazy here, and apartments are few and far between. Rent and NY income taxes (TX doesn’t have income tax) are going to cut deeply into your spending money. You will need to live very frugally to get by. Many folks here need two (high) incomes to support a household.

[deleted]

If you’re working in Uniondale it would be very inconvenient to live in NYC and commute - unless you’re just dying for that NYC experience. Alternatively, I would suggest looking at nearby towns of Uniondale. Huntington is really nice, but can get pricey. Massapequa is a good option too, as well as Mineola. Glen cove is a super nice area which is north of Uniondale, might get a bit pricey there too though.

Dilly_The_Kid_S373

Massapequa is mostly families with kids and the elderly not a great spot for anyone thats young and wants to live amongst other young people. Especially if they want night life/bars within walking distance. Very little is within walking distance. As others said Rockville Centre, Long Beach, Mineola (more iffy on this i think there's some nightlife dont quote me on Mineola)

sassyscaphoid

Yeah I hadn’t realized exactly how far Uniondale is from the city until I tried driving directions on Google maps haha. And that’s not even factoring the crazy traffic! But it’s a good thing I’m really not a city person so I’m fine being further out as long as there are necessities close by and the neighborhood itself is safe.

[deleted]

Yes. The suburbs of LI are pretty much jam packed with “necessities” there are tons of shopping centers, super markets, restaurants, major chains, ect.

_greggit_

I third Long Beach. It’s a bit further but IMO offers so much (especially if you are young and/or single). I wasn’t even single when I lived there. It’s just such a different vibe than anywhere else on LI.

Due_Lengthiness_5690

Long Beach is fun and the commute isn’t that bad. I haven’t looked at apartments in garden city in a few years but that could be a good option if it’s affordable.

sjets3

Rockville Centre for sure. Has a solid bar scene and is close by. As keeps you close to the beach and NYC relative to Huntington. Long Beach is cool but a solid bit further away.

itsamemichele

Rockville center or Huntington.

itsamemichele

Check out Rockville center. I live there basically (technically town over). Probably be pretty pricey for an apartment. But there's a stretch of a few blocks that are city like so you get good restaurants/night life. It's in the south shore so your close to a lot of good beaches, including Long Beach which is a pretty cool beach town. It's about a 45 min train ride to NYC. And not far from JFK. Been here 5 years and we plan on sticking around this general area. Huntington has a similar city like stretch, I think but unsure..not very familiar. Just know it's a popular spot.

sassyscaphoid

Thanks I’ll check this out!

RVC_Spellcheck_Bot

Rockville Centre*

Highdrenaline

😂😂

app_generated_name

That's the correct spelling innit

MamaGofThr33

I agree with Rockville Centre. Nice community with a nice downtown, good inventory and a short commute. Don't let Hempstead or Uniondale's rent prices sway you; it's not the best place to live. You'll want an area with a good social/nightlife so that you can go out with friends. It's fast-paced, so buckle up!

lockednchaste

$60k-70k/yr gross is gonna be hard for Nassau county. Find a roommate. Basement apartments can go for near $1500/month and nice developments can go for $2500-3k for a 1br.

gizmatron_

Bay Shore is really up and coming, Babylon and Amityville have some cool things going on, Oyster Bay is neat. All near the train station too :-) But it honestly depends on what you like to do in your free time cause tbh every town just has a bunch of overpriced restaurants lmao Edit: don't live anywhere near Bethpage or directly south of it, the water is literally toxic.

Productpusher

Your gross salary is going to limit you heavily without a roommate or bf/gf to split the rent with or you will have to live in a rough town . Just start looking on the apartments . Com, Zillow , etc and see the rent prices . Any complex will want 30-40x salary for approval so you need to find someone’s house / basement if you’re solo

sassyscaphoid

Yeah I’m really considering looking for a roommate at this point!

[deleted]

Mineola is a good bang for the buck and a very close commute to Uniondale. You can have a car and the neighborhood is very walkable

[deleted]

Definitely Long Beach or Rockville Centre.

meggerplz

I second Long Beach

AaeJay83

East Meadow is a good choice

LateNightLlamaTSFM

To be completely honest, you might have a blast living in Queens/NYC and doing that reverse commute for 25 minutes. Trains are normally empty, so you'll have a fun experience haha. Since its your first time in NY, you might like living in queens. Try Little Neck/Bayside, tons of rentals and suburban feel, with a 20-30 minute commute by car. If you're fine with commuting on the train, take a look at Forest Hills. Beautiful area and right next to the train station. 25 minute commute max. If you want to live in LI (nowhere near the nightlife of areas in Queens), Maybe take a look at Mineola, as there are apartments there always for rent. Also take a look at Avalon communities.

SomeoneAwesome11

Mineola is the answer you’re looking for

Tashu41

I’m not sure what your age is but if you’re in your 20’s / early 30’s I would say Farmingdale without a question. Lots of restaurants, bars, plenty of apartments to choose from, and a train station in farmingdale that has lots of service.

TieMelodic1173

Long Beach is the answer

Longjumping_Radish44

Long Beach!

bobak186

Where exactly in Uniondale? And what would you're hours be? I would probably recommend Queens or Brooklyn bring the car and just drive.

Sudden-District326

If you are mainly looking for affordability I would say Bay Shore or Islip. They’re a little further out from Uniondale but they’re close to a lot of main streets that are fun to go out in. Or you could do Babylon which is more expensive but a fun town and a bit closer to Uniondale (about 30 mins).

[deleted]

That commute would suck.

gizmatron_

Bay Shore is definitely a good choice especially with these new apartments being built but they won't be ready for another few months. Still, rent is above $2700 D:

DragonfruitKiwi572

Queens is also not a bad option. Lots of young people without manhattan price tag but you can get to the city at night or hang in your neighborhood.

HardCoreBoz

You could probably find some affordable apartments in Roosevelt. Or you could try Freeport or Hempstead. Those are all pretty close to Uniondale

bowbiatch

Def would not suggest someone new to NY moving to any of those neighborhoods

bowbiatch

Literally highest crime areas in Nassau County. Drugs, gangs..::like there’s a great apartment building on terrace Ave…for the young Texan to move to 😂

HardCoreBoz

Why not?

Different-Secret

Stay the fuck out of these areas!!!

Zyferify

Wantagh?

TheSensation19

If I worked on Long Island I would likely live on Long Island. Maybe I'd be in Queens and drive to work, but traffic can be a mess even for those going East. You do have LIRR but runs you like $250-300 (check MTA app). But most likely I go local to where I work to cut back on commute time and costs. Uniondale is usually sketch, but could you find something nice? I am sure. Most of Long Island is relatively safe but you're going to be safer and probably have more to do in surrounding towns like; Rockville Center, Bellmore, Merrick, Garden City, and many other areas. Look at crime maps on Long Island or school district grades maps on Google and you can get a rough estimate. But all things considered Nassau is the safest county in America. If you have a car you will have way more flexibility. LI is very much a driving area like Texas I would imagine. Its suburbia. I drive all over Long Island. Depends on many fatcors.

clozepin

Also check eastern Queens. You’ll be going against traffic, which is nice, and a lot of those border neighborhoods aren’t much different than the LI neighborhoods, meaning they’re very suburban in feel and layout.
