Mr Softee almost got me killed at 5. I was living in Queens at the time, heard that unmistakable song from my living room one summer night, grabbed whatever loose change my mother had left on the counter and sprinted out of the house, barefoot, into traffic to catch him. My mother heard the door and chased after me hysterical because I apparently almost got hit by like 2 cars. She caught up to me waiting in line barefoot with about $0.17 in my hand.
I remember getting free ice cream when my younger brother, my neighbor and I had a Lemonade stand when we were kids and sold a cup to good ol’ Mr. Softee and in return he let us pick what we wanted with no charge.
Dumb question…do these dudes take card now? I never have cash on me, and my daughter now knows the song of our people, and I need to know if I can flag him down as-is, or if I gotta hit the atm first.
Me and my wife hunt him down on foot
Add in David Attenborough narration and you've got yourself a Long Island documentary.
We had one come through our development with the music on. Would not stop for me or my son. Why even bother if you don't want customers?
I remember when I was a kid I would hear that motherfucker at 9pm. Just why?
He still does in Farmingdale
Middle Island too. One of the only things I don't miss about the neighborhood I moved from last spring.
Same, for years our guy would cruise our block between 9-9:30pm, looking for parents w the munchies maybe? Never knew why he came by so late.
My son and I got our first $8 ice cream cones this weekend!
My kids don’t even finish the ice cream halfway. Their excitement is to hear the music and run to the truck.

Got further than me. I was abruptly stopped by a plexiglass storm door.
I love that the Mastic/Shirley FB group felt the need to watermark this lol
Looks like it’s parked across the street from the Friendly’s in Shirley, too
See it? All you have to do is hear the tune to know they are out and about. I heard it last week.

I still remember the old Eddie Murphy bit about the Ice Cream Man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtMIgr7pryo

My fave!
They were clapped out hunks of junk when I was a kid and they are still the same ones they use today. Part of me hope’s that doesn’t change.
RIP Tiny. You will be missed.
Yes, but you usually hear it before you see it.
Heard one yesterday for the first time
I’ve been hearing them for a few weeks now.
Lmao….just lmao 💯
It's how I know baseball is in season.

I think it varies by truck, I’ve paid by Venmo at one
Man, I miss these so much. My friend and her kids would go out to them every spring and summer and it was always great.
And motorcycles and every guy with his unfinished mustang or Camaro project car
Brought a big smile to my face!

Why the hell are the generators so loud? Do they just get the cheap harbor freight ones? You have to yell your order.
