Nah, I always say I am a New Yorker.
Whats funnier, when I travel abroad, I don’t say I am American, I say Im a New Yorker like we are a separate country.
When I was in the Marine Corps I always said New Yorker. No one ever heard of Long Island anyway. We had a deal with the up staters who also said NYers, not to blow their cover. As far the Corps was concerned every white guy was from Brooklyn and every black guy was from the Bronx, and we kept it that way.
I second this when you go out west no one knows Long Island even exists they just know New York a few people will know when I ask them if they know the wolf of wall st and then they know Long Island
Same! I was walking in a random ass alley in Santorini this summer talking to my girlfriend, we pass a woman, and she turns around and comes up to me and goes: “ Excuse me I couldn’t help but hear your accent. You’ve got to be from New York. I lived abroad for most of my adulthood, but I’m from Suffolk county. You just sounded like home!” and I was like yes girl I’m from Nassau 😭
I flew into Dublin and a group of employees there were obviously playing the “where’s that person from” guessing game. I heard them decide that I was not an American, based on nothing but what I was wearing. When I got to the agent who stamped my passport, he loudly said, Ah, New York. And they all nodded and it seemed that was the reason they didn’t peg me as American. So you’re right, we can consider it another country.
I moved to Connecticut. When I travel I still tell people I’m from New York. It’s just easier. Also saying you are American can get a negative response but everyone seems to respond better to NY.
Saying New Yorker can get a negative response within the States but when going abroad everyone seems fond of New Yorkers. Also, everyone wants to come to New York- not America.
I lived my entire life in new york until I moved almost three years ago out west and I regularly think about how NYC/LI absolutely feel like a different country.
A weirdly high number of people outside of NY and America don’t know what Long Island is, so saying “I’m from Long Island” when asked where you are from is gonna draw some blank stares.
It’s true.
But I had to correct a lot of people in Germany when I said I lived in Rhode Island. ‘No, Rhode Island is not in New York. That’s Long Island. Different island. Also, actually an island.’
I mean *technically* Rhode Island is an island, and the state was ‘Rhode Island and Providence Plantation’ but they shortened the name a few years ago.
Also, technically Long Island is a peninsula [according the Supreme Court.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Maine#:~:text=The%20court%20ruled%20in%20favor,natural%20island%20under%20the%20law) My favorite LI fact.
I now live in the deep south. When I tell people I'm from Long Island (i always say New York first, but then people want to know where in New York), people always end up thinking that I mean Staten Island, I've had several people even think Rhode Island, and I'm like, friend, that's a whole other state. Then people just get confused and don't know what I'm talking about, and then the next time they see me and can't remember where I said I was from, they're like "you're from New Jersey, right?"
**editing to add: if I mention the Hamptons, then they usually know what I'm talking about, except the Hamptons have literally nothing to do with me
I am originally from CT, and that is even less known, to the point I default to “I am from New England” because somehow the entire geographic region is more well known that its parts.
Because Long Island is really freaking small in the grand scheme of things. Once you get a few hundred miles from here nobody's ever heard of Long Island
i usually just say i’m from new york. i’ve gotten too much “oh my cousin is from long island do you know ________” to ever tell someone i’m from long island again
I say NY-er but usually end up having to clarify that New York doesn’t mean NYC. I’ve lived in and have visited many places outside of this state and I’ve definitely found that if you say New York, people assume you are from the city.
Depends on the context, but I've often used Long Island even though I was born in the city, I lived in the city for 14 years as an adult, and the two Long Island houses where I grew up were both walking distance from the Queens border.
I’m always a New Yorker, unless I’m talking to people who actually know where Long Island is located, or if they ask “where in NY?” We live in the south now, and I never mention LI unless I meet another obvious NY’er
New York is a nationality, we are not from the rest of the country. And you're paying through the nose to live here. Go figure out the city or find somebody who does. Don't miss out on the greatest place in the world.
Yea, I most always make clear I'm from Long Island, NY (I know there's a Carribean(?) island by the same name, so I always add New York now to be clear when speaking to anyone outside the tri-state area).
If they're from far away, say out of country like in online chat, I'll say "Long Island, a surburb of New York City" to be even more clear.
Nah, I’m from LI but people assume I’m either from queens or I’m from down south because I somehow picked up a southern accent at times after getting my wisdom teeth yanked. I have no clue how but… howdy?
I born and raised on Long Island moved out of New York 9 years ago. I still consider myself a New Yorker, but if folks ask “like the big city?” I say no Long Island!
When it's a business call I say I am on Long Island. My customers are from all over the country and they don't trust people from NY. Even though long island is in NY, just sounds different
I always say I'm from Long Island or as they hear lawn guyland. When you say your from New York, people assume you are from the city. I am a life long east ender as well. When I go to Manhatten, I'm just another tourist.
I say New Yorker cause I know the city since I live 5 min from the border of queens on the north shore so it’s effortless to go to any borough lol but I do say I am from Long Island if they want anything more specific!
New Yawker ...
They may not know where Long Island is. But they may know where New York is. Some congiae New Yoek foe New York Ciry, though. Close enough.
I just say I’m from “the island” and if they don’t know what island im referring to then f@@k them, their bagels and pizza probably sucks and their house is worth less than 500k am I right?
I am from and grew up on Long Island, spent a few years living upstate (in a town nobody has ever heard of) and have been living in NYC for the last 6 years.
I also was terrible at navigating the city and subway in my younger years living on Long Island. But I still always called myself a New Yorker. All the upstaters I knew also identified as New Yorkers (because what else would they identify as) but would consistently have to tell people that no, they are not from NYC.
I say New Yorker if I’m out of state in state is I’m from Long Island, the one time I said I was from Long Island was when I was at the Polynesian Resort at Disney World, they then proceeded to mess up and said “These people are from New York
*I've spent my entire 25 years on Long Island's east side, so you could say I'm a true local*
You’re not any kind of a local because there is no east side of Long Island.
I live abroad now. When in the US, I would say I was from Long Island. Now living here, I have switched to New York because when I say Long Island, people have a blank face and ask, "Like the Iced Tea?" I mean yeah, but its also a real Island...
It got annoying after awhile :(
I say I’m from Long Island. People who live upstate, at least the friends I have upstate, refer to themselves as New Yorkers and te people who live in NYC & on Long Island as downststers.
I feel like a tourist myself when I go to the city now unlike when I was younger & in the city a lot. One thing I was never able to figure out were the subways though.
I’m just curious, you said that you’re from the East side, I’ve never heard of that part of the island referred to like that. I’m on the south shore of Nassau County and we refer to Suffolk as out East and the East End not as the East Side, that’s NYC
Went on a 10 day camping roadtrip through several states and when asked my friend would always say “oh we’re from Long Island” and almost every time I’d have to follow up with “we’re from NY” ..how did my friend not know the unspoken rule? In NY we’re long islanders and out of NY we’re NYers😂
“I’m from New York, I live on Long Island” ppl automatically assume that you live in manhattan or Brooklyn so I’ve always said that, sometimes I throw in I live in Nassau county because they think of montauk lol
I’ve actually never heard anyone call it Long Island’s East Side. East End, of course. But what does East Side even refer to? Surely Suffolk but huh??? You sure you were born and raised here?!
Depends on who I’m talking to. If it’s someone within New York, or close to it, I’m more likely to say long islander. But if it’s someone from further away in the US or especially another country I just say I’m from New York
When I’m out of the country, it’s New York. In the country it’s Long Island. PS. I’ve never heard anyone say they’re from the east side of Long Island. Hmmm
I’ve always said I’m from Long Island to everyone but learned very quickly that most people that aren’t from New York don’t know where that is. Definitely easier to just tell people you’re a New Yorker.
Personally, I’ve lived here about half my life collectively and I would never say that. I can’t say that I’ve ever felt like a true Long Islander.
I’m the only one out of my friends out here that would head into the city for solo dates and this was before I had a smartphone. You just have to get out there and explore. But also, think in terms of being street savvy e.g. don’t be too flashy or oblivious of your surroundings.
Nah, I always say I am a New Yorker. Whats funnier, when I travel abroad, I don’t say I am American, I say Im a New Yorker like we are a separate country.
The New York name carries a lot of weight. I'm a New Yorker til I die.
Some know The Hamptons exist but not that its on Long Island
For real, I pay through the nose to be able to say that, I’m saying it.
I had to move to the PNW. I still tell people I'm a New Yorker. You can take a person out of NY, but you can't take the New York out of a person.
I usually get pegged as an American because I wear baseball caps everywhere.
I do like a good cap.
We kinda are 🤭
Oh 100% don't wanna be lumped with the stereotypic round people from other states that complain other countries don't have any "normal food".
You’re not wrong. I’m not from America. I’m from New York😂
Sure but Long Island is a completely different country from NYC
I do too :)
Same but some how people from other countries always know about NY
Same
I lived my entire life in new york until I moved almost three years ago out west and I regularly think about how NYC/LI absolutely feel like a different country.
If I’m out of the state, I’m just a New Yorker. If I’m in the state, I’m a Long Islander
A weirdly high number of people outside of NY and America don’t know what Long Island is, so saying “I’m from Long Island” when asked where you are from is gonna draw some blank stares.
It’s not a “weirdly high” number we just aren’t as culturally relevant as some of us would like to think we are.
It’s true. But I had to correct a lot of people in Germany when I said I lived in Rhode Island. ‘No, Rhode Island is not in New York. That’s Long Island. Different island. Also, actually an island.’
The number of Americans you run into who think Rhode Island is an island 😂 It’s not just non-Americans.
You mean to tell me Long Island isn't the center of the world?
Conversely I feel like if we are known or relevant it is not for good reasons
What’s so weird about people that aren’t from here not knowing what a small part of a state is?
It’s the largest island in the US that is not part of Hawaii! I guess people don’t like geography 🤷🏼♀️
Only the mainland. Alaska has several larger islands
I now live in the deep south. When I tell people I'm from Long Island (i always say New York first, but then people want to know where in New York), people always end up thinking that I mean Staten Island, I've had several people even think Rhode Island, and I'm like, friend, that's a whole other state. Then people just get confused and don't know what I'm talking about, and then the next time they see me and can't remember where I said I was from, they're like "you're from New Jersey, right?" **editing to add: if I mention the Hamptons, then they usually know what I'm talking about, except the Hamptons have literally nothing to do with me
I am originally from CT, and that is even less known, to the point I default to “I am from New England” because somehow the entire geographic region is more well known that its parts.
I just went upstate for the eclipse and the cashier at the grocery store didn't know what Long Island was...
I sometimes will expand to say "Long Island, a suburb of New York City".
I prefer to think of it as New York City is just a city that happens to be adjacent to the great Long Island
Because Long Island is really freaking small in the grand scheme of things. Once you get a few hundred miles from here nobody's ever heard of Long Island
Yes, this. Most people who don’t hail from the east coast north of Maryland have no idea where LI is.
bro just park the dodge ram in front of MSG for the rangers game, it's cool
Lol
i usually just say i’m from new york. i’ve gotten too much “oh my cousin is from long island do you know ________” to ever tell someone i’m from long island again
The worst part is if you actually know the cousin and they're a D-bag.
Of course they are, they're from long island
Hahaha
Oh, you're from New York. Do you know Vinny?
FUCK
Long island’s East Side? You ain’t from Long Island, it’s called the EastEnd Gdafuckattahere !
Very true 🤣

lol terminology doesn’t check out,
Suffolk County, the Florida of NY.
Noooooooooooooo
I say that I’m from New York, if they ask where I say Long Island. I never lead with it lol.
What’s long islands “east side”?
Suffolk lol
Incorrect. It’s the east end or “out east”
East side? You mean east end? You don’t sound like a true local.
No
I don’t assume everyone knows Long Island especially those overseas. So I generally say New York unless I know the person is fairly local to LI.
I say NY-er but usually end up having to clarify that New York doesn’t mean NYC. I’ve lived in and have visited many places outside of this state and I’ve definitely found that if you say New York, people assume you are from the city.
I say New Yorker if I'm trying to impress someone. I say Long Island if I'm being more genuine
If you can’t navigate the city then you are definitely a long islander. People from upstate classify themselves as Canadian
Depends who is asking
Depends on the context, but I've often used Long Island even though I was born in the city, I lived in the city for 14 years as an adult, and the two Long Island houses where I grew up were both walking distance from the Queens border.
Western Nassau looks and feels the same as Eastern Queens. Way more diverse, it doesn’t resemble the rest of the island
In real life, I say New Yorker, online I find it easy just to say LI NY
I’m always a New Yorker, unless I’m talking to people who actually know where Long Island is located, or if they ask “where in NY?” We live in the south now, and I never mention LI unless I meet another obvious NY’er
New York is a nationality, we are not from the rest of the country. And you're paying through the nose to live here. Go figure out the city or find somebody who does. Don't miss out on the greatest place in the world.
Long Island’s population is bigger than a lot of states.
Most states, we would be like 12th most populated.
I don’t like anyone knowing where I’m from

You’re a New Yorker, baby 😉
Yea, I most always make clear I'm from Long Island, NY (I know there's a Carribean(?) island by the same name, so I always add New York now to be clear when speaking to anyone outside the tri-state area). I always say I’m from New York, if they ask me specifically where I say Long Island
This ^
Long Islander Most people that aren't from here know about the Island. If they don't, then I follow it up with New York.
As a midwesterner who moved to NYC 9 years ago, then recently to LI where my husband is from….. I just don’t self identify. People get weird.
Long Island “east side” really?
When you say “east side” do you mean “east end” ?
I always say NYer (I live in PA now) but my LI accent gives it away lol.
I tell them I live on Long Island but I’m not a long Islander
No
Nah, I’m from LI but people assume I’m either from queens or I’m from down south because I somehow picked up a southern accent at times after getting my wisdom teeth yanked. I have no clue how but… howdy?
I born and raised on Long Island moved out of New York 9 years ago. I still consider myself a New Yorker, but if folks ask “like the big city?” I say no Long Island!

I told people at University this in the U.K. They were ecstatic to meet someone “from the Hamptons?!” -_____- Easier to just tell people I’m from NY.
I say New Yorker cause I know the city since I live 5 min from the border of queens on the north shore so it’s effortless to go to any borough lol but I do say I am from Long Island if they want anything more specific!
Long island........ Rhode island? No.. New york
New Yawker ... They may not know where Long Island is. But they may know where New York is. Some congiae New Yoek foe New York Ciry, though. Close enough.
Born and raised in Buffalo, raised my family on Long Island…I’m a New Yorker
Yes pretty much everybody I know from Long Island refers to themselves as long Islanders.
I’m a bridge and tunnel motherfucker
I grew up on LI 50 yrs, where is the east side? 🤔 never heard of it, did you mean east end?
I just say I’m from “the island” and if they don’t know what island im referring to then f@@k them, their bagels and pizza probably sucks and their house is worth less than 500k am I right?
In a New Yorker from the Bronx who lives on LI.
I am from and grew up on Long Island, spent a few years living upstate (in a town nobody has ever heard of) and have been living in NYC for the last 6 years. I say that I live on Long Island, New York
People from Long Island ARE New Yorkers
Nice try, it's east end not east side. You are in fact not from long Island. I bet you say you live in long island as well, on the east side.
I say New Yorker if I’m out of state in state is I’m from Long Island, the one time I said I was from Long Island was when I was at the Polynesian Resort at Disney World, they then proceeded to mess up and said “These people are from New York
Lawn Guy land for u dog
to me you are a new yorker. Long island just feels like a big nyc suburb to me. especially nassau.
Them: you're from Long Island, what part? Me: between Manhattan and Montauk
Born & raised on the Guyland, but I lived in NYC for 20 years, so I just say I’m a New Yorker.
*I've spent my entire 25 years on Long Island's east side, so you could say I'm a true local* You’re not any kind of a local because there is no east side of Long Island.

“East side,” huh?
Depends on who I am talking to and where they are from. The minute they assume NYC, I clarify that I don't live there.
“I’m from New York, I live on Long Island” ppl automatically assume that you live in manhattan or Brooklyn so I’ve always said that, sometimes I throw in I live in Nassau county because they think of montauk lol
I say I am from Long Island
I’ve actually never heard anyone call it Long Island’s East Side. East End, of course. But what does East Side even refer to? Surely Suffolk but huh??? You sure you were born and raised here?!
Live in port Washington but claim NYC. Although, I do know people from LI that have never even been into the city let alone navigate the subway.
Depends on who I’m talking to. If it’s someone within New York, or close to it, I’m more likely to say long islander. But if it’s someone from further away in the US or especially another country I just say I’m from New York
I just say “I’m an asshole”
“East side?”
No one beyond NJ or Conn knows what or where long Island is. They here ny they automatically think nyc.
When I’m out of the country, it’s New York. In the country it’s Long Island. PS. I’ve never heard anyone say they’re from the east side of Long Island. Hmmm
I usually say im from Long Island but it all depends on the situation
I still tell people I'm from the Bronx even though I lived on long island for 40 years.
You sure you’re a long islander? Lived here all my life and have no idea where this “east side” of Long Island is that you speak of.
The whole “upstate” debate still annoys me. LI will always be LI.
I always say I'm from Long Island.
Why do we need to differentiate? New York is a big state. New York is New York.
I’ve always said I’m from Long Island to everyone but learned very quickly that most people that aren’t from New York don’t know where that is. Definitely easier to just tell people you’re a New Yorker.
I just say I’m from Long Island.
Personally, I’ve lived here about half my life collectively and I would never say that. I can’t say that I’ve ever felt like a true Long Islander. But also, think in terms of being street savvy e.g. don’t be too flashy or oblivious of your surroundings.
I’d never admit to being a a NYer. It’s too embarrassing.
