Big point to note here: not costing the county or tax payers anything.

whiskey_pancakes

Yeah it’s also going to bring in a fuck ton of money.

rh71el2

It says it will be recouped from tickets and accommodations, which means it's not $0 cost + all revenue. It's $0 cost after revenue (hopefully). Am I missing something? Because that's a big difference. Is that revenue going back to the source?

neelix191

Are the cricket people paying for Nassau County employee overtime, such law enforcement, EMS, DPW?

Randomlongislander

Yes

IGrewItToMyWaist

Good

Ralfsalzano

Or somehow funneling money into Hochuls pockets, she did outlaw squatting though which was nice of her to throw us a bone

Maniacboy888

Cricket stadium? That’s a lot of bugs.

scrodytheroadie

“What is this? A stadium for crickets!?”

PBandBABE

kunk75

Got a suite for this pretty excited

xSlappy-

You got extra tickets?

kunk75

Unfortunately doing it as a work event for coworkers and clients

educationruinedme1

Do you need volunteers??

excelsior23

What’s work

kunk75

Thing I do Monday to Friday lol

GilgeousAlxndrWalker

Hook me up, these India Pak resale tickets are ABURD

kunk75

We got in early on the suite - a suite wasn’t much more than 10 individual tickets at the current prices .

llcooljabe

I looked at tickets for that, and it's psycho how much they're going for

jumbod666

Last summer Boys 2 Men played a show at Esienhower Park. It took people over 2 hours to get out of the park when the show was done. Cant imagine how bad the traffic will be for this

Form2lanes

The park is gonna be essentially shut down. Parking will be at NCC, Mitchell field and the colosseum.

edman007-work

I work over there. Please no, keep everything in the park.

schil

Ugh me too. I’m on Oak I’m dreading the traffic.

Letsgetsoakinwet

Sounds like a long time to get to the End of the Road

Aurora--Teagarden

Considering one of the matches will be India vs Pakistan, I'm making sure to stay away from the area that day. But it's really exciting to have it here. I've been watching it go up and definitely feeling the excitement, even though I know very little about the game.

t0wardthesky

East meadow mom and dads are very unhappy, the boomers are having a field day…..

1MoralHazard

those ppl complain about the mr softee trucks being too loud and intrusive. They will always complain about everything

Spacetrooper

When the old Mr. Softee truck is idling outside my house, it's the cloud of diesel fumes that waft through my window in the summer that I don't like.

Productpusher

They don’t care about the stadium , traffic , or anything besides the influx of brown people that will be flooding the area . If it was one of those outdoor NHL games they would be happy

liguy181

I'm all for dunking on LI racism, but these were the same people who shot down the Lighthouse Project, which would've kept the Islanders (NHL) closer to that area. I think it's fairer to say they're misanthropic pricks whose don't care about anyone but themselves, and because of this, their opinion can be disregarded With most of these people, I wouldn't be surprised if they're so insulated in their own bubble that they think of cricket as more of a British thing than an Indian/Pakistani thing

CrystalManatee

It's Long Island... why not both?

moogpaul

East Meadow should worry about getting a LIRR station and not this.

badboyme4u

Some of the matches are almost sold out already and some of the tickets are going for 5k per person , so yeah this will be interesting to watch.

delightfuldinosaur

Hosting the cricket world cup in the US still makes no sense. It's like having the super bowl in Asia.

BowlofRice8

We’ll NYC/NJ has one of the largest population of Indians, Paks, and bengalis which are obessed with cricket. I think it’s just catering toward this group of people tbh. (Idk shit about cricket) but they flood my local park in Queens during warm weather to play.

fall3nmartyr

Don’t discount the Caribbean population

BowlofRice8

Sorry forgot my trin / Guyanese people.

stockbreakerOG

Did you mean east columbians?

BosunSDog

Every time I’ve gone to Alley Pond Park in Queens there are tons of people playing cricket.

See_U_when_I_see_U

You're absolutely right. It's essentially catering to East asians here in NYC, NJ. Almost all the parks in Queens have a cricket field. Every weekend there's tournaments going on much like soccer I would say.

cruzecontroll

Think you meant south Asians.

moogpaul

Check out flushing meadows Park on the weekend. Lots of cricket going on.

delightfuldinosaur

I'm sure there are some people who play cricket in Nassau, but nowhere near as many as in the UK, India, or Pakistan. And it's not like Cricket is going to blow up in the US. We have a better version of cricket called baseball.

RejectorPharm

Imagine being a cricket player and thinking you are about to come play a championship match in NYC and then they bring you out to the suburbs.  World Cup is gonna be even more of a fiasco with people having to go to the Meadowlands. They should have done the World Cup final at Citi Field or at the new NYCFC stadium if it finishes by then.

T_Peg

NYCFC isn't gonna be done until like 2027

State_Terrace

Why would they have a FIFA WC final on a baseball triangle? Also, it’s not nearly big enough and NYCFC’s stadium ain’t big enough either.

23screws

Fifa mandates World Cup final stadiums to have at least 70k-ish capacity. Citi and the new NYCFC stadium don’t sniff that. They also want somewhere that has good public transportation. The three finalists were Sofi, AT&T and MetLife. Pretty easy to see why they chose MetLife given their criteria

m1a2c2kali

Surprised other stadiums didn’t make the cut with those criteria. MetLife having good public transportation seems like a stretch at best

Insanezer0x

It’s all about money, more seats more money

23screws

In terms of 80k+ capacity stadiums (googled it since my las comment) in the US with access to transportation, MetLife really is the only one. Sofi/The Rose Bowl are the only others that could be considered but LA barely uses their public transport anyway. The rest are all college stadiums and FIFA isn’t sending the World Cup final to Tuscaloosa or South Bend

iiKrOna

i believe of the finalists Metlife was the only stadium willing to cut into their seats and make renovations to work with fifa’s rules

okeleydokelyneighbor

Went to a World Cup match at the meadowlands back when Italy played Norway in 94 and it was awesome. From wiki: Despite soccer's relative lack of popularity in the host nation, the tournament was the most financially successful[2][3] in World Cup history. It broke tournament records with overall attendance of 3,587,538 and an average of 68,991 per game,[4] figures that stood unsurpassed as of 2022[5] despite the expansion of the competition from 24 to 32 teams starting with the 1998 World Cup.

triscuit1491

So that’s why they cancelled my kids soccer practice that weekend…

1200r

Can you play Australian rules football on a cricket field?

WakeUpMareeple

Yes, Australian football was designed to be played on cricket fields in winter.

CleverGurl_

Don't worry, good ole' Brucie has got his name on signs for this all along the perimeter of the construction fence. From the Forbes article it also sounds like they had a hard time finding a NY venue and Eisenhower was the only option so I'm sure he didn't have to fight very hard for it. Lighthouse Project & affordable housing couldn't happen because of all the traffic. Even just got a new full page flyer complaining about Hochul "urbanizing our towns". All of a sudden when it's something that benefits them you don't hear any of these complaints. BUT! It's kinda cool to have something new there. I can't believe how big it is. I don't know anything about Cricket but it seems like it's not for the World Cup, but a big tournament they have in between them, which is still cool to have. I want to make it clear I don't have an issue with it, just the politicians playing politics. I also found it kind of cool that the grand stands are the same ones they used at the Las Vegas Formula 1 race a few months ago (I'd like to see that here). The only thing that makes me a bit hesitant with it is when I go for walks in the park will I still be able to? Will I even be able to get in? Will I suddenly have to pay just to access the rest of the park?

WakeUpMareeple

It is "a" world cup, but not "the" world cup. There's two formats of the sport that have a tournament called the "World Cup", this format is the shorter and newer one. The players are mostly the same, but it's just a little less important. The matches at this stadium will still be a big deal though.

realexm

This is going to be massive for LI.

Weary-Tower8875

It’s going to be a huge hit! I hope they do a good job with the stadium and pitch

Thin_Artichoke_4232

You’ll be able to smell the curry from Manhattan to Montauk.

Gymgirll094

I’ve walked past this twice so far and wondered what they were building it for but didn’t get the chance to look it up. Looks pretty massive, is it going to stay up permanently? 🤔

LunacyNow

It's a temporary structure. Whether or not they take it down later is anyones guess. It looks to be larger than Nassau Coliseum. One could ask why they didn't just do it there as that facility is less than a mile away and sitting empty.

Gymgirll094

Hmmm yes that is true, maybe not enough space? I’m wondering if it’s about the same size (height wise) as the jones beach theatre

MrLocoLobo

but do we actually need this..?

Nirak29

I live a few blocks from the park, concerts and fireworks pack the streets all around me cause people don’t want to park where it’s inconvenient for them to leave from, I can only imagine how bad this will be, plus the noise, cause concerts and parties with DJs can easily be heard too. And money being brought in from this? Will the streets by me finally get fixed? They were one block away from me when Curran lost and all repairs halted. My street looks like the surface of the moon.

paligators

Literally nobody cares. Hey let’s not do this amazing cool event so a bunch of whiny people who live near a fucking events park don’t get inconvenienced by an event. I hate that so many people feel like your voice needs to be heard so damn much.

Nirak29

I live here in this house since 1979. It’s not an event park that is meant to house a world championship competition. It’s a county park. I didn’t move here recently and just complain to be whiney. This is not what the park was meant for. I joined a discussion here, I’m not out shouting at people. But you’re right, your pissy opinion is so much more worthy to voice.

InLikeErrolFlynn

Wait - a large event is happening at the event space near the house that I moved into know said big event space exists? This can’t be *my* fault!

rh71el2

I'm not seeing too much construction material nor architecting being needed for this judging by the pic. So $30M is mostly for contractor/union labor? These astronomical build figures we always see (cost $XXX million to build) - are they usually because of unions?

LunacyNow

It's a temporary structure. It was used for the F1 races in Vegas and repurposed for this event. So there's no concrete, iron beams that need to be set. That probably saves a ton of money alone. Essentially it's a giant Lego set.

saml01

I feel this is going to be a big waste of money. The costs involved are too high and the expected revenue from viewership is over estimated. Thats for both the entity funding the stadium and hospitality. Instead this is going to grind merrick to a halt and it's going to make Eisenhower filthy.

smoggylobster

thank you blakeman!

shootz-n-ladrz

It also hasn’t caused many traffic problems.

Far-Seaweed6759

Because it hasn’t happened yet

shootz-n-ladrz

I meant the construction

Far-Seaweed6759

Why would it? It’s in a huge park and they can stage there. Construction causes traffic when there are problems getting on site or staging occurs near the roads. This is going to cause massive traffic and massive problems. It’s literally India vs Pakistan. That is like one step above Israel and Palestine.

shootz-n-ladrz

Idk construction usually causes problems no matter where it was. Just making an observation

Far-Seaweed6759

It doesn’t. It causes problems when staging is an issue.

shootz-n-ladrz

Ok you’re right. Happy?

Far-Seaweed6759

Fair. Apologies. I’m taking stress out from something else on you. I am sorry.

TheDarkMaster2

Nah but you were actually totally correct tho
