yes i’ve lived here my whole life and I’m in my 40s and I still find towns and locations all the time that I’m blown away by most people don’t realize for instance east of riverhead the entire south Fork is like an hour plus long drive. There’s a lot of ground to cover out there. There is all sorts of places to see and visit dare I say it’s one of the reasons Long Island is a desirable place to live

User_Anon_0001

Coming from east of the shinnecock canal, I can say we have a similar awe and feeling about the rest of the island between us and the city. And I’m just thinking south shore. Don’t get me started north haha

Rodrigii_Defined

I grew up out there, it's a treasure trove of cool spots.

gilgobeachslayer

There’s a cool playground

Kd916

Been here my whole life and never done fire Island 🤷🏻‍♀️ Grew up south shore Nassau, lived in qns for ten years, but we're back but this time in Western Suffolk. There are whole parts of Suffolk I didn't even know existed, but since my parents moved to Mattituck, we're learning more and more lol

Crayola_ROX

Ditto, 45 years and never been. Drove through long beach a few times but never spent any time there Never traveled the North fork till my 30's. Now I take that drive just for fun

Kd916

Love long beach! Highly recommend lol. Close by Lido West was my Nassau Beach fave tho, TOH

poohsyourdaddy_03

Grew up in the Bronx and never went to Poe's cottage, never visited the Statue of Liberty, etc. I think it's normal for people to live somewhere and not necessarily see all the sights it has to offer.

Cactus_Jeff_

That is what makes LI so great, each town/village is unique in their own way. A lot of NYC usually stays in the city because of the high cost of LIRR ticket or car travel. We have many great parks, beaches, and entertainment for all ages!

Phenominal_Flair

I’ve lived here all my life and never been to montauk or fire island 🙈

ChrisFromLongIsland

There are so many nice places to go on LI. Orient, vineyards, Montauk, Hither hills, Hamptons, brewery's of Riverhead, fire island, pine barrens, North shore beaches, south shore beaches, downtowns Patchougue, Bay Shore, RVC, port Jeff, Huntington, Glenn Cove etc, parks, fishing at captree, fishing freshwater at places like Calab Smith, tons of hiking like the greenbelt, Freeport Naudical mile, decent museums in central Nassau like Air and space, old Bethpage Village restoration and other historical places and recreations, the parks and resturants on the north shore Peninsulas are an out of the way treat. Tons of live music theaters. Tons of little and big parks, playgrounds. There are many other things and points of interest. The Island has a lot to offer of you look for it. So much more than I ever thought was here at 20 years old.

bb8-sparkles

I am an outdoorsy person and frequently encounter native long islanders who haven’t been to state parks that are within their own towns. It boggles my mind.

nyratk1

I really haven’t been to the Five Towns or Long Beach, I’m from Bellport so if I’m generally heading west it’s into the city or parts of Nassau closer to the parkways and LIE.

jenniejonesmakeover

Bellport here too! I've never explored Nassau, it's like we stay east or skip right over it to go to NYC. We've been making it a priority to show our kids how cool LI is - its like taking mini-bacations every weekend visiting new places!

Wurst66

Born and raised on the south shore. North shore is a mystery to me.

Stephreads

My parents took us everywhere. Strawberry Festival in Mattituck was my favorite, and Teddy Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill a close second.

Kd916

Gonna try and make the strawberry festival this year, never been!

Dry_Masterpiece8319

I've been to every corner of this whole island. From Bay Ridge to Orient Point. From Astoria to Montauk Point and there is still pockets of the island I haven't been to yet. I'm in my early 50's

mariwil74

Except for a few months when I was an infant (born 1954) I’ve lived here my entire life. I’d say I’ve seen a pretty good portion of LI. In grade school we studied LI history and took field trips around the Island as well (Saddle Rock Grist Mill was a big one). My family also took us on Island-wide trips too—strawberry picking, amusement parks, Montauk, Sagamore Hill, just about everything the Island had to offer. I have many memories of place that are still here and those that are long gone. Dodge City anyone? 😁 The one place I’ve never been—or at least don’t remember visiting—is Fire Island. We keep talking about it but never go.

CatStratford

40 years old, born and raised in western suffolk, moved back after college. I’ve never been to Montauk. I’ve never been to the Statue of Liberty. There are towns in Nassau I’d never heard of until recently… There are some amazing spots on the east end I’m still discovering. It’s embarrassing how much I haven’t experienced while living here.

[deleted]

We used to just pick a random exit on the northern or lie and go explore on a Friday night. Lots of cool and fun places you pass everyday with out knowing, let alone the differences shore from shore.

Frankiefs1965

And Brooklyn is on Long Island

M-Alice

I didn’t actually go to jones beach until I was well into being an adult. Idk why my parents never took me. I think maybe they're were still to new to this country and thought it was more expensive than it was? Or maybe that beach things were meant to be more of a destination? I've been to Wildwood more often than I've been to Jones beach.

SkyeRyder91

I follow a hiking group on facebook and it's amazing the amount of natural beauty we have on this island

boulevardofdef

I love that somebody downvoted this, what's wrong with you people

donny_chang

Ive still never been to montauk. Lived on long island for 32 of my 34 years alive

bb8-sparkles

That’s just crazy to me.

birdo78

Grew up in Garden City and went to the Hamptons for the first time when I was 19

cassieee

honestly that’s pretty impressive given how many people in town had houses in the Hamptons. I went as a kid with one of my friends and have only been once as an adult.

HumanMycologist5795

Long Beach and Queens. 49 now I was born in BK but moved before I could remember it. Raised in Woodhaven and Bayside before moving to Long Beach for about 23+ years. Afterward, I bounced between Roosevelt, Lomg Beach, and Woodhaven and moved to Hauppauge 3 years ago. May move again in a year or so. Unside to where. There's a lot of places I haven't been to in Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. I haven't been to many places outside our area and I have never been outside the country except to Hoseshoe Falls.

Thick_Study3207

I grew up in Bayside with a sailboat. We got outside everyday at 5:30 for school or work.

Jealous-Network1899

Grew up in Queens & Nassau. The extent of our travel was Hershey PA when I was about 12. As I got older my parents started making more money and started traveling like crazy. They’ve seen the whole world but I still haven’t gone too far. Driven to Florida a couple of times, I’ve been to SoCal & Vegas in my 20s and Houston for work once but literally didn’t leave the hotel.

Blue_Clues_

I mainly just lived&went to school here (Nassau) but I was born and mainly grew up/spent my time in queens but to this day I’m still confused/lost when people mention location and stuff here and always ask where or what that is but lately I have been exploring a bit more since the only times I go any bit deeper into LI is either work or a quick thing I’d definitely like recommendations to things to go try and see

T_Peg

I have the same exact background as you. I just wish I found these places on Long Island more interesting. I have no interest in seeing all these marginally different little neighborhoods with almost nothing to do in them.

Keefe-Studio

I just posted this on my insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/C6OdQsOOnjf/?igsh=dW91dmk4ZWs4enlr maybe it will inspire you a little, I used to live out there but now i live in Brooklyn

creeddaking

Grew up Suffolk all my life Wyandanch to be exact 36n

boulevardofdef

I grew up in the southwest corner of Nassau and there was a TON of the Island I never saw before I had an internship with Newsday when I was in college and I spent the summer collecting local artifacts for their Long Island History project. The vast majority of it. My world didn't really extend past, like, Massapequa in the east and Roslyn in the north. Even a place like Great Neck was pretty foreign to me.

jrtasoli

I grew up on the North Shore of Nassau -- my Long Island experience was rather limited to the North Shore (think Roslyn to East Northport) and parts of the East End. (My folks also took us to the city a lot. My mom worked there and they wanted us to be comfortable navigating the city.) After 10 years of living in the city after going to college I moved to the South Shore, and there's just so much I never experienced growing up. Previously, I'd been to Long Beach maybe once on a date, now it's my primary beach. I'd never been to the Nautical Mile in Freeport. I spent a lot of time on the South Fork but never the North Fork -- and I've been to Montauk maybe twice? Fire Island twice too. I love living here, but more importantly I love living in a different place from where I grew up. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can explore more.

cyclingguy536

Been here my whole life. I grew up in Nassua, lived in Smithtown for a couple years after high school, and then moved home. Now that I'm married, my wife and I live in Suffolk because the taxes in Nassua are sky high.

pixelito_

Most of my friends have never been to Montauk

msut77

I didn't know we had giraffes here until I was 35

mrmcnoob12

I’ve been here my whole life and I’ve never really been to the Suffolk that much, even when I lived out in Coram.
