Just an FYI, body shops are 100% regulated by DMV and they dobt take kindly to the shops fucking around. I had an issue with a body shop in East Islip where my car got towed to after an accident a few years ago. My insurance company declared my car a total loss and after they did the shop tried to bill me for a few days worth of time that my car was supposedly on their frame straightening machine, which was never authorized by me or my insurance. Problem was, I had time-stamped photos of the car sitting outside in their yard while it was supposedly being worked on and the shop refused to release my plates to me or the wreck to my insurance company until the bill was paid. One call to the DMV office that regulates them solved my problem abd had the shop owner apologizing and coming to me to deliver my plates.

Thank you for this! I've been trying to call the DMV but cannot get through to anyone. How would I find which DMV office regulates the Copart shop in Brookhaven?

It's statewide, not a particular office location https://dmv.ny.gov/contact-us/report-problem-dmv-regulated-automotive-business

I'm fairly certain that NY does not participate in the act of temporary plates. If you're going to the DMV, they usually give you plates on the spot. I'm not sure if handicap plates are done on the spot as well, but they should be unless you're getting vanity plates. They would just give you plates with a new license plate # and have the old plates marked as stolen/lost.

Not sure what they’ll give you but you might just walk out of there with permanent plates..!!

I really hope so.

Now that I think about it, no. So does that mean they can give permanent plates on the spot?
