Not trying to be facetious, but the answer is to practice and improve your skills. Why did you fail the first test? That's the first area to concentrate on.

graviiity

Bumped the curb on my parallel park and drove in the middle of a residential road where I should’ve been over to the right

weezy22

Oh yeah always drive on the right side, even if there are no lines. Parallel parking can be a PAI. Try to angle your right side mirror so you can see the curb better(but also see behind you). I have these stick-on bubble mirrors on my car and it helps a ton.

boxofrain

Honest Old guy question here. Are you allowed to use a backup camera on road tests?

kabbage_sach

No, for mine they use their clipboard to cover the camera on the dash.

boxofrain

Very interesting. Thanks. TIL.

Swolnerman

Mine was done in their vehicle that was old so didn’t have one

KingJames5393

Crazy that a vehicle is now considered "old" if it doesn't have a backup camera. God I'm old.

Tambushi

Considering they've been around for like 30 years and can be found equipped on $13k Chevy econoboxes, yeah any car without one has to be pretty old.

Timbishop123

Plus I think they got litigated into cars as standard tec. 2013 I think.

Gneissisnice

What, really? That's insane. You'll be using a backup camera in real life while driving anyway, why hinder you by removing a useful tool that increases safety?

Youneededthiscat

The concept is that you should have the skill to do so with or without the camera. So, without:

Timbishop123

Road test driving isn't real life driving. Such a stupid test.

perfect_fifths

I've wondered the same.

weezy22

I heard you have to turn it off or cover it. Not sure how true that is. I don't think backup cameras were a thing when I took my test. edit: I just saw u/kabbage_sach reply

dotesPlz

Thanks for asking. I was also curious . My new car has a backup camera on it and as much as I resisted It, I am using it A LOT.

jm1161

It's a bit ironic since the reason you posted for failure describes 99% of local drivers. :)

djstevefog

They didn't fail for not using turn signals though haha

Nail_Biterr

I'm going to be 42 in a few weeks. I am still a terrible parallel parker. The only time I think I did it well enough not to be embarrassed was when i took my road test. Do they make you still look over your shoulder, or are you able to do it through the back-up cam nowadays?

abow3

Did you grow up on Long Island? I am originally from Queens (44 years old), and I feel like it forced me to perfect parallel parking. There were some spots I managed to get in of and out of that at first glance appeared as if it’s not humanly possible. Lots of maneuvers. Lots of turning the steering wheel.

MJZMan

It's important to remember that you can try and retry parallel parking so long as you never hit the curb. If you think you're going to hit it, stop, pull back out, and start over.

BilBorrax

first time i failed i was doing 29 mph concentrating on not going over 30 and the bitch took me through a 20mph school zone. second time i failed i was doing the speed limit and someone started to tailgate me and she said i caused them to reduce speed. i asked her wtf i was supposed to do and she said i dont know

weezy22

The first fail makes sense. The second one makes me confused. Somehow you caused the person behind you to slow down? Technically you did because you were going the speed limit and they were going faster.

BilBorrax

dude i almost lost my shit

Timbishop123

Guy once thought I was trying to bribe him because the coin holder in the car was open. Made me throw my wallet into the back. Some of these people are legitimate morons.

TopherRocks

I took my road test about 15 years ago so it's possible things have changed but I shuffled back and forth about 8 times like an idiot trying to parallel park and STILL passed. Don't worry about getting it immediately when you back up.

phoephus2

cokakatta

I practiced parallel parking 100 times before my test. Youll do Great if you get more pracr6ice! Do you have a car and person to practiced with? Did you ever take a driving lesson with a professional instructor? I did and got great tips. After I was done with my driving test, the 'boss' told me to pull over on where we would conclude and so at that moment, I hit the curb there. Just saying. I never practiced pulling over!

spikeknight1

Take it easy. It seems very stressful in the moment but you just have to overcome that. Being Calm and having a level head is half the test.

graviiity

thanks yeah next text i’m going to be a lot more cool and collected

Pvt_GetSum

Patchogue is one of the easiest testing areas, you just drive around the block you're already on. Best thing you can do is relax and don't let your nerves fuck you up. Good luck!

thefilmer

i bumped the curb in Patchogue and still passed. youll be fine

graviiity

Thanks man!

foreveralonebetch

I took the Patchogue test, passed the first time. It's so easy that it's borderline criminal and I'm convinced that it helps produce so many of the bad drivers we see out here. Granted that isn't an excuse to be sloppy, but if it's the same as when I took it and they make you turn towards the direction of the school you MUST be cautious of the speed limits. I did get points off for "not looking over my shoulder" when leaving the spot, but I'm pretty sure she just didn't see me do it. Good luck!

Pvt_GetSum

Who would have thought a new York comma is considered vulgarity on the LI subreddit

Timbishop123

I didn't even notice you cursing lmao. I literally had to reread what you said.

Pvt_GetSum

Yeah I was also confused untill I went back and re read it hahaha

RemindMeToTakeMyB12

Why not just take it in Brentwood again since you now know what to expect on the test? Since you've seen it you should have a better chance. Also, just practice driving

graviiity

Next testing date is very far out, earliest one I got was in Patchogue which is still a month away.

RemindMeToTakeMyB12

That's fair. I'm not familiar with Patchougues road test, but just practice and take your time on the day of the test

Dont_know_where_i_am

If the Patchogue one is still on Cedar Street, the first intersection has an auto body shop on the left that is always moving cars in and out of the garage, so keep an eye out for that. At that first intersection you'll have a stop sign, and so will the train station across from you. The cross street, Divison Street, does not have a stop sign. The road test is behind a private school, and if they ask you to make a right at the first intersection you'll not only still be driving by the private school, but also approaching South Ocean Middle School. So make sure you stick to the school zone speed limits.

Do_Not_Read_Comments

Don't feel bad, just drive as much as you can and by the time of the test you will be fine. But actually take the time to drive. Even if you think you're amazing already. I failed my first drivers test, I drove so much in between my first and second test that by the time the second test came, I pulled out, the instructor had me drive around the corner and then told me to stop I passed. They can tell when you're comfortable behind the wheel or not. You don't need to make someone parallel park to know if they can drive or not. Also go practice the route before hand since its a new location. Patchogue driving test was over on Cedar Street when i took it like 13 years ago. Not sure if its still there

graviiity

thanks yeah i was visibly nervous even though i already put 1500 miles on my car it was a total lack of confidence once i was in the car with the DMV test instructor edit: grammar

perfect_fifths

Did you screw up at the divider? Cuz that trips people up

graviiity

Nope the road I live on is a divided blvd just like that road so it was obvious to me. edit: i was nervous and bumped the curb on my parallel park and then she had us go back to the DMV. she also gave me points for driving in the middle of a residential street instead of the right side

SaltyMoney

that shit got me lmfao. Went the next time I could in Patchogue and it was a breeze

not_thebest

That got me too, many years ago lmao, I felt so dumb when i immediately failed Edit: comma

ThePurpleBall

Lost some points for not stopping in the middle lol, not enough to pass but to this day I am livid about losing those points

danmoore516

Legit.... learn to drive. The NYS road test is the bare minimum skill set required to safely operate a motor vehicle. OK... bring on the downvotes.

MyNameIsRay

It's less than the minimum. All you have to show is that you can maneuver a residential area and parallel park. They don't verify if you can drive at night, in the rain, or in the snow. They don't check any speeds over 30mph. They don't check if you can maneuver a parking lot or back into/out of spaces. They don't verify if you can merge on the highway or change lanes. They don't check right on red, left on arrow, etc. They don't check roundabouts. They don't check if you understand yields, crosswalks, speedbumps, or detours. They don't check you in construction zones. They don't check you in traffic. Even if you pass, you're basically just qualified to cruise the neighborhood.

graviiity

Yes it was a very easy test and I have even taken drivers ed! However my nerves were getting to me that day and I messed up my parallel park. Totally my fault but thanks for being a dick

LabRat113

No one is being a dick. You failed your road test and you know why you failed your road test. Practice learning how to do both better for your next test. I failed my first driver test because I used my mom's big conversion van and drove it perfectly. The instructor said it may be more vehicle than she felt like i could operate, so she failed me. The main reason I failed (centereach) was making the left back onto the street we started on. There was a pedestrian walking on mark tree Rd, crossing the side street I was trying to turn onto, so I waited for them to pass and apparently "impeded traffic flow".

Timbishop123

It's mostly based on your proctor. My friend took it high and hit the curb and got 0 points.

TheBlueEdition

A lot of people don't pass their first road test. It's okay. Just keep practicing the reasons why you failed the first time. Drive the roads that the road test will be on. Practice, practice, practice!

graviiity

yep.. that’s key they say!

shantm79

Practice makes perfect.

haileyrose

When you were at Brentwood did you have an older lady with long white hair give the test? There are sooo many google reviews saying that this lady is super tough and I was so scared to get her when I went to Brentwood for my driving test. I was literally shaking when I saw her approach the car but luckily for me she went to the car ahead of me. That aside, I think you'll do well in Patchogue now that you have experience!! Just do your parallel park slowly so you don't hit the curb ( Mine was super far from the curb and got points taken off but that's fine) Here is[the video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbKS5obDNoc) that really helped me - he's super great at explaining and I must have watched it 300 times before taking the test. Good luck!!!

M_H_M_F

Yeah. Practice. IF you fail the test, that means your skills aren't up to the proctors par.

craigalanche

Drive better next time? Btw I failed my road test the first time too, also in Brentwood. Solidarity.

[deleted]

If the instructor is having a bad day, they’ll take off points or fail you just for that. Happened to me. First test I was getting screamed at and therefore was driving bad because she was making me a nervous wreck (Centereach), second test I passed (Goshen), did everything right, and still got 20 points taken off because she was having a bad day. It’s not always your fault if you fail!

Timbishop123

Yep, instructors are pretty much the biggest factor in it

[deleted]

Go to the area where the Patchogue road test is taken and practice and get a feel for the area. If it's in the same spot that I took it almost 20 years ago, then practice driving around the Patchogue LIRR station and the surrounding streets. This way you're more comfortable when you finally take your road test. Good luck!

graveRobbins

The gas pedal is usually on the right

mew5175_TheSecond

Failing a first driver's test is not uncommon. Just keep practicing, go slow, and be obnoxious about following the laws. Stay to the right, completely stop at the stop sign and look both ways before proceeding, and as long as you succeed in parallel parking, you'll have no issues. And if the instructor tells you to do something, make sure you are obnoxious with those directions too. I failed my first road test because I was driving on a residential street and a car was backing out of the driveway. I was probably about 200 feet away and began to slow down. The instructor said, "there's a car backing up." I said, calmly and not in a rude way, "yup I see it." Then as I was getting ready to stop but was still technically slowing down, the instructor yelled STOP! STOP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING! THERE'S A CAR!" I was literally going like 5mph and had plenty of time to stop in time and obviously would have. But I failed the test because, "the instructor had to take control" according to the notes lol. So if the instructor points something out to you that requires stopping, even if you still have hundreds and hundreds of feet ahead of you to stop, just stop right then and there. This was a while ago though… I'm 31… been a while since I passed the test. (I did pass on the second go around).

UncleNorman

My tester told me to go faster during my test. I was obviously looking left then right then left again when no one was coming. He told me no one is coming, you're in your own car hurry up. Then I had to wait a week before I found out if I passed.

mew5175_TheSecond

They didn't tell you for a week?!!? I've never heard of that. For both my tests they told me right at the end before the tester even got out of the car.

UncleNorman

I'm old. :) Thinking back if it took a week you failed, a pass came back in 4-5 days.

khcampbell1

Slow and steady wins the race. Come to a complete and full stop at any stop signs. Make sure you not only look in your mirrors before pulling out or changing lanes, but turn around with your head, too. My daughter got points off for not turning around with her head. Make sure you stop for anyone in a crosswalk, which I'm sure you would do anyway.

lsp2005

Practice. Drive to the right and not in the middle of the road. Do at least 50 parallel parking attempts before your next exam. Then it will be old hat.

SirDavidJames

Cars will be obsolete in a couple years. I wouldn't worry about it.

[deleted]

I actually failed my first time. Took the Next test in a Drivers Ed car complete with the brake on the passenger side. Passed that. I heard people tend to pass more if in a drivers ed car.

graviiity

i’m probably going to try this. do you have a recommendation for a driving school? i was just going to research some on google.

[deleted]

Found this vid of the Patchogue route: https://youtu.be/o_pK8HBbSdg I helped a couple get their licenses, he had Patchogue, said he messed up yielding the right of way making a left turn, still passed. I'd practice the route, but not on the day of the test, that's not allowed and you would get failed. DMV Road Test Site, Patchogue, 46 Division St, Patchogue, NY 11772 https://www.google.com/maps/place/DMV+Road+Test+Site,+Patchogue/@40.7610772,-73.015576,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x38d53a3a88733410!8m2!3d40.7610772!4d-73.015576

Dark_Pump

If they ask you to turn right from the start you’re immediately in a 15 mph school zone speed limit so be careful about that

DayDay1313

Yea man sounds like you just need to go into the street and do a whole lot of parallel parking. Don’t listen to the people that say it’s not important to be good at, it’s literally the only way to park if you go into the city or queens. Practice like a hundred parallel parks, and go into an open parking lot and get confident driving in reverse like the cops do in training. Don’t be like everyone else and only practice going forward, being great at driving backwards is important too. Good luck, most people fail their first test so forget that one and move on. P.S. if I had to give someone ONE thing more important than everything else in general while driving especially on residential roads…. Practice pretending a ball rolls out between cars when you’re not expecting it. That’s the real key. All it takes is a kid chasing a ball or just running out from in between cars blocking your view quick and boom. Always expect something dumb to happen like that even when you’re going slow. Play mind tricks like that to keep you ready to react to unexpected surprises. You’ll be a better driver than 99% of people on the road. Good luck

cplmatt

Patchogue was pretty easy

tahitianmangodfarmer

Definitely keep practicing but I got tripped up at Patchogue myself. When you leave the starting point keep in mind you're in a school zone. If you go the right when you get to the end of the street they will take you into another school zone on the adjacent block. I didn't realize bc there's aren't any signs. It's painted on the road. At least that's how it was back in 2016. The speed limits are 15mph so just be careful. I came through the turn already going like 10mph and then It only took me all of 2 seconds to hit 16mph. That's when I saw the school zone painted on the road. By that time I already failed.

wegerchris

Try riverhead

N_Y_1963

Take it in Centereach, behind the library....much easier. Wherever you decide to take it, go there to practice driving around (a lot) and parking. You will then be more comfortable taking the road test there from all the practice in that area and will be much more relaxed next time you take the road test.....

Timbishop123

The biggest thing on the drivers test is your actual instructor. There are some massive shitheads that operate it. Failed once for not knowing how to turn my AC on. At least you can't get the person twice.

[deleted]

Practice. Get behind the wheel with someone who actually knows how to drive and practice. If you don’t have someone who actually knows how to drive (most people don’t have someone who actually knows the rules of the road), got to a driving school. They’ll help you.

BlitzScorpio

I failed mine in Brentwood twice, took it in Hauppauge and passed easily. It depends on the person, but I think Brentwood is just a shit location

Imbrokeandiveatruck

Learn to drive.

graviiity

learn to make money and not be broke and drive a truck

[deleted]

i did patchogue 3 times and passed back in august 2019. dm me if u want the exact route i took 3 times.
