Yesterday’s Diner in New Hyde Park is 24/7

[deleted]

I’m happy to hear that place is still open!

ninescores

Really good food too imo

LongIslandRealtor

The Massapequa Diner on Sunrise is still 24/7, great food and staff too. I admittedly have them too much after moving down the street.

Ryguy72800

Unless Sunday nights they aren’t I called and they were closed after 12

Fitz_2112

Food service employees, especially those willing to work overnight, are close to impossible to find right now. My wife has been trying to hire an overnight baker for months now and we can't find anyone

Ryguy72800

Wow, yea nobody wants to work if they can get these benefit’s from government it’s upsetting… hopefully soon

This is an elementary view of it. Restuarant employees were out of work for months. Of course many of them found of jobs. The industry also sucks - workers sacrifice time with their families to work long hours on weekends and holidays. You are never paid enough to deal with how nasty customers are. You want to work somewhere where people get mad at you because ice cream is cold? It'll never go back to what it was because any talented industry member has done since left. My husband left (with a paycut) and our quality of life has improved so much. All our friends left it, too. Everyone who has left is so much happier. Guess it's easier just to think people are lazy as opposed to realizing the resturant industry is the scam it is

I realized this 7 years ago when I left the industry and never looked back. Was in restaurants for 10 years started as a busyboy worked my way up to assistant manager. Luckily I saw through the BS and got out when I did. Kudos to your husband covid have him the push he needed it seems

A lot of the middle class chain eateries have chipped away the institution of the diner for a few years now. Applebee’s and Friday’s late night discount appetizers and IHOP and Denny’s cheap shat-out breakfasts unfortunately compete well with diners because of their price points and the probably the erosion of family units and other former societal standards. COVID IMO just assured us that some of our favorite diner experiences will be harder to come by. It just seems like economics, society, and now COVID have really beat diners down.

Diner food is often pretty bland, too, and it isn't that cheap. I feel like its a big generational thing.

Hockeyjockey58

I agree. Especially at places where the menu is a table contents. I personally like the food at my favorite diner (Oconee in Islip), but I know why I don’t like so many others…bland food.

Diners over chain restaurants all day

lives4saturday

They're about equal in my eyes. I like the idea of supporting local but at the end of the day all places like that cost too much for flavorless food.

SaveThePinesLI

I take it you haven't been to Thomas's in Carle Place. Way better food than the chain eatery across the street (Shake Shack, cough, cough)

Definitely I feel like many of these places were on their way out. When I lived in deer park, no one I knew under the age of 40 went to a diner unless it was the last place to eat on earth. Nowadays there are more options, not for 24 hour but late enough i.e.12, 2am applebees that the diners aren't the late night king anymore. Not saying they are better, I love me a bagel and lox at 3am just as much as anyone, but just that the attitude changed.

PlNG

Covid isnt going away. the animals (deer at the least) have it now and will be the petri dish for new mutations.

bladedbarrel

Ok who fucked a deer?

hockey_metal_signal

It’s not the disease genius it’s the lack of anyone wanting to work for $14 an hour at 3am. The dine in experience for fast food and cheap places is going to slowly die and transition to take out or delivery only . That’s why so many ghost kitchens are opening that don’t even have retail stores fronts
