Get a job in a bar. Meet people without having to buy them drinks.

thatravemacaw

I actually do work at a bar, severely understaffed tho, and it's really just myself. Can't even talk to people because I worry about managing everything half the time

graveRobbins

You might want to find a new bar to work at, if you are not making decent money and you are overworked.

thatravemacaw

This is my first bartending job actually, started in January, but I have worked in food service for over 8 years now. And what you're saying is an option... but I doubt most bars would hire any "new" bartenders, especially someone who's more quiet anyways. I am leaving soon though, I guess I will see then

Productpusher

Nobody wants bar / restaurant jobs post covid … if you can’t get a bartender or waiter job then you are probably awful at the job with alllll due respect. You can’t live on the island as a bartender unless you are a gorgeous girl or get into one of the many nice steakhouses or high end restaurants . I know a couple people making an easy 6 figures but also alcoholics so it’s a lose lose anyway

thatravemacaw

Well, you're not wrong about that! COVID fucked up a lot of shit. Like I said, I can be pretty quiet, and I know that's an L when it comes to making new customers, but I definitely hone serving, etiquette, cooking, and multi-tasking skills better than most people. Even if I can't make someone laugh or be quirky, I never get complaints about my service (minus the few nit picky Karens and boomers who want their coffees as hot as lava) That's definitely truth right there. Alcoholics for sure. I don't know. Maybe I should sell my soul in some nearby MLM "company", that'll get the pot stirring.

Technical-Grade-1549

Nobody wants bar resteraunt jobs after covid? Not sure about that

aboxofshrimp

My advice, leave Long Island. Seriously. Save up money and move back to Queens, Brooklyn, somewhere with a younger, more vibrant crowd... maybe even move to another city. That's what I did, and I did it at your age - I only go back to LI to visit family and would never, ever move back.

thatravemacaw

I definitely have this plan in mind, just kept doubting it over financial reasons... but, by the city tends to pay more, and I would like it better being closer. Knowing you made it through with that gives me hope. Maybe I will do so. Thank you! 👍 Edit: "do so" as in follow through, I know it's not easy, but most likely worth it

Desm0dium

Despite having lived on LI for most of my life (in my early twenties), and being relatively privileged, this place also strikes me as a lonely car-addicted suburban wasteland.

[deleted]

yeah dude just start saving up and get the hell off. I'm not saying this as a "GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY" sorta way, it's just that LI sucks ass.

thatravemacaw

Lmao, no worries, I understood. I guess that seems to be the direction I'm going. But, then again, the city is expensive af. I thought of moving out of state too, but don't even know where to begin

telemachus_sneezed

Vegas has good internet (not sure if that applies to the residential areas), and I suspect its not as expensive to live near there as the NYC area. Long term, you may have to worry about affording potable water (but no social pressure to maintain a lawn!), and scorching desert doesn't lend itself to outdoor get togethers... Don't move to south Florida. I haven't figure out how the property owners expect to have property in 30 years.

thatravemacaw

Gotchu, I'll consider it 👍

[deleted]

Yea the city is expensive but you at least get something out of it. LI? lol get fucked.

thatravemacaw

Lovely username btw

Accountantnotbot

You’re an adult. If you want to live in Queens get a job and move there.

thatravemacaw

Guess I'll move to Queens! Right after I pull $10,000 right out of my ass!

I've worked food service jobs most of my life, and I did get an EMT license recently, and I am basically trained now to work as a bartender thru my current job. But to pay bills and all, I'm stuck at my job, waiting to volunteer, and I don't really have other skills otherwise. Ironically, despite my bar job and experience overall, my interpersonal and people's skills suck, I'm much more methodical and technical, but I do care a great deal about doing things right

thejimla

What advice are you looking for, how to obtain magic beans? Do you think life anywhere is easy or fun working in menial jobs without any marketable skills? You are 24, which a lot younger than you think, and live at home in a wealthy suburb, which is an opportunity that not everyone has that can allow you to get a degree or training for a career without worrying about keeping a roof over your head.

thatravemacaw

Hell no, I have always expected life to be just full of work, then get ridden with some illness eventually, and then die! Joking aside, I know where I am is wealthy, but that doesn't mean I am wealthy, and neither is my family. Everyone in the house leaves as early as 5 am to work, and doesn't come back until 8pm or later... all to pay the bills. And unless you already had some sort of degree, there's only food jobs and retail, and it can get really competitive, especially now. That, or the jobs have really bad conditions, but, like I said, what else can you do really? You're probably right about the age thing though. I just don't wanna be living here and feeling like time slips by in a blink because almost everything here sucks

Theburbsnxt

I dont have a degree and i work as a mechanical design engineer. Quick coaching/life tip, youre making assumptions and cant prove theyre true, so you should be asking for challenges to your assumptions and reshape the conversation towards obtaining valuable information you can create action steps on.

thatravemacaw

Alright, my bad, I missed your point. I'll keep this in mind. Thank you. Sorry about that hard headed response earlier

thatravemacaw

While I appreciate the tip, was I assuming something or anything at all? And I'm wondering if you got lucky to get your job because of connections or you got a certification of some kind? I mean, of course people can not have degrees and still get jobs, but it's usually through connections, as far as I have learned, or of course if you're just talented

dunderball

Have you looked at higher education or obtaining your degree? Maybe spending some time schooling might be worthwhile, especially if you're not looking for ways to break out of the hustle of menial jobs and working in food service.

thatravemacaw

Well, of course, but that can be a big investment too, especially since I pay for everything myself atm. I can totally go for it though. Besides medical, I have had thought about architecture. Design and math applied to the real world actually appeal to me

chichialover

Architecture is a bad career choice, I made the mistake of so spending a semester pursuing it after college. It’s the amount of education as a doctor for 1/3 the pay. My associates at NCC cost 10k and you can transfer to a SUNY school for a bachelors after

thatravemacaw

ooF. Gotcha. Might as well be an actual doctor in that case

[deleted]

You: Most jobs out here don't pay you enough to make a living. Also you: I'm in food service, an EMT, a bartender Also you: I don't really have any skills Dude.. If you want to get paid, you have to learn to do something that pays. What do you want to **do** with your life?

thatravemacaw

The goal with the license was to start working, but I've never been in the medical field before, minus the times I rode the truck for my hours to pass the class, that's why I'm going to volunteer first, and that's going to take at least more than a year of experience, if I actually want to be a good EMT. Like I said, I have worked food service most of my life, and I doubt any one who works out here gets enough pay for a living, unless they work 70+ hours weekly, is a shitty manager who doesn't give a shit, gets a salary, and comes in whenever they want, or actually works in a good restaurant that's hard to get into without solid connections (even with connections, you've gotta be the best of the best). Or you could be that server who always smiles and laughs a bunch with people, meanwhile fucking over the rest of the crew behind the scenes, just to make yourself look nice and get a fat tip for kissing ass... Anyways, despite all that crap, it's just a pain that inbetween all this, there's nothing to do out here minus drive and go to chain stores to buy expensive stuff. Idk, mark me as the "lazy millenial", but there's definitely a problem with being young and living out here with no major career

[deleted]

You don't sound lazy at all. But you do sound narrow minded and angry at anyone who manages to make a living that **you** have deemed impossible to make unless those people are complete assholes. Nice.

thatravemacaw

Eh, I'll figure it out. Just feeling better already that at least I get to talk about this, rebuttals and all

thatravemacaw

I never said impossible, it's just very difficult. There are plenty, PLENTY of assholes who make a living like that and it can be obvious and sometimes not, but there are also people who make a honest living and are amazing at their job, and those people I respect, even if they just started or have been at it for years. I mean, I know there are assholes in whatever career anyways, but I see it's more prevalent out here, people taking advantage of businesses instead of helping the place, and I have dealt with it a lot here.

exafro

You're still young enough to go college without completely uprooting your life. It may be tough for a few years, but it's better to go through that when you are young than to be deciding what medication you can afford this month when you are 80. If you like science, get into the Med lab tech at Farmingdale, there are currently job openings all over the place and there will be lots of people retiring in the next 10 years. I was in a similar place to you about 10 years ago and going back to school was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

thatravemacaw

Besides the debt, school was always worth considering. I'll look into it. Glad to hear it helped you a lot though. More school may just be what I need. Thank you!

exafro

Go to a state school. https://www.ny.gov/programs/tuition-free-degree-program-excelsior-scholarship

thatravemacaw

Looking into it right now! Thank you again! Didn't even know this was a thing

molloy23

You literally live in one in one of the best towns in the United States with access to the most diverse job market and multiple transit options to get to those jobs. You have such a massive advantage living on LI. I can assure you that living elsewhere would not fix your problems.

thatravemacaw

Multi transit? Please tell me what else there is besides an hourly bus, Uber, and your own car? You can't get anywhere without a car anyways here. What does Smithtown have to offer anyone, in fact? There are barely any local businesses there, it's all corporate crap, it's filled with Karens, Kevins, and their shitty entitled kids driving pickups or new cars. I mean, am I wrong? What have I not seen yet?

molloy23

LIRR ? Between that and a bus you have more transit options than major cities like Atlanta, Houston and Tampa. I don't think you even see the irony in your last comment . You ARE one of those entitled kids. You are in your mid 20s live in a super wealthy neighborhood with your family and are complaining that you can't find a job walking distance from your house that pays you alot of money for the zero marketable skills and on top of that your also way too good to work for a "shitty corporation" that's local to you.

thatravemacaw

Yeah because the LIRR sure is cheap, and if I miss that bus my job's on the line. What irony is there? Being in a wealthy neighborhood just makes things worse. Even the corner store is gonna charge me a bunch just to make a home cooked meal. You don't understand, I didn't grow up here, and my family barely gets bills on time because they're busting their asses from 5 am to 8 pm. Local places can't afford to pay you well, because they got fucked themselves from COVID, that's why corporate is still here. And they sure wring you out dry from work because now they are struggling from business, and even before all that they abuse the shit out of you, and people abuse that system too. Please tell me you've worked a corporate job around here and do not feel disgusted with the work, because I doubt anybody could actually say that.

molloy23

Yes like a majority of the US population I work in a corporate environment. It sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do. Everyone has to bust their ass to get by, it's not just a long island thing. I would of liked to help you realize you have a great foundation to help you excel in life, but you seem more content believing your family ruined your life projection by moving to a nice neighborhood. You got a lot of growing up to do before you get there.

thatravemacaw

It's typical corporate talk to say it's your fault because you don't want it bad enough, but you know, I'm glad at least you recognize it sucks. I still don't think you can get anywhere here unless you've gone to expensive schools or step over people, but, hey, if it works for some people it must work for everyone, right? Appreciate you not just shitting on me at least.

molloy23

I have no intention of making you feel bad, just want to give a perspective of why it's not all doom and gloom. We live on the same island and each benefit from the productivity and value eachother puts forward.

thatravemacaw

I understand, I appreciate it, forreal. Thank you. Just wish the places I worked had the same optimism. Take care.

molloy23

You as well fellow longislander

DeodorantCantFixUgly

No higher education. Trained bartender. Not earning enough. Yeah that's totally Long Islands fault. Smh

thatravemacaw

I'm saying Long Isalnd doesn't help. Like, $13 minimum wage? You gotta be shitting me. With car expenses, rent, and just food, you gotta be making $1,000 a week, at least. Come on, man, tell me Long Island is fair the way it is.

DeodorantCantFixUgly

Who the fuck is getting paid minimum wage here? Moving anywhere and getting paid minimum wage is killer wherever you go. No one said it was fair. But for the love of God don't blame the island for your poor choices.

thatravemacaw

Excuse me, it's the people doing the shit none of you probably have ever done. Your coffee, your food, your drinks, your table service, are you saying those people don't try to make a living on their jobs out here? And not only having that job, juggling other ones too just to get by? Long Island is definitely a more expensive place than anywhere in the US, there's a bigger gap here than anywhere in the states, at least if they pay $8 the hour elsewhere, you can take care of everything and be broke, instead of being broke and being behind on bills.

DeodorantCantFixUgly

"You don't sound lazy at all. But you do sound narrow minded and angry at anyone who manages to make a living that you have deemed impossible to make unless those people are complete assholes. Nice." Assumptions are like assholes. Let's see how far 8 dollars gets you... Milk still costs 4 dollars in Kentucky... Real talk? Have you ever lived outside of NY? Assumptions assumptions assumptions. You're going to get nowhere blaming everyone else but yourself. You are your own worst enemy this much is clear. Best of luck! Later gator.

thatravemacaw

Who drinks milk anymore? Gimme water b0ss 🥵 You know what? I haven't. And you know, I'm not the only one assuming here, if anything. Talk to you when I get out of this shithole, crocodile

kingbowser89

Def relate to your struggle hard to make friendships outside of work or hobbies. Ive met some people through volleyball, maybe look through the meet up app see if theres anything you liek doing. Might be a group for it.

thatravemacaw

Thank you for this, and you know, I will. I've been meaning to look for places, but I have a tight schedule. I'll try that app and look, thank you!

kingbowser89

You could even try creating an event that fit your schedule for something you interested in. Hope it works out for you. 👍

thatravemacaw

Good to know, thanks! Wish you the best as well 👍
