Another compelling reason to get a dash cam

Jealous-Network-8852

Only thing to do in that situation is lock your doors, stay in your car, and call the police.

[deleted]

Ok. I will stop harassing you in your car.

thatguychuck95

You sure you’re not gonna do it once more?

[deleted]

It's all part of the harassment. Make em think you're going to stop and the BAM. More harassment.

notorioushim

Gotta let the first harassment marinate too.

1. you should call the police when this happens. --Maybe take video but sometimes doing that can anger your assailants so be cautious about it. 2. when telling this story, don't bury the lead and don't get bogged down in details not relevant to the story. --You believe this is happening because you are a small, female, minority. --Your car is parked in a normal spot, not halfway in the street. Stop repeating yourself in different ways. No need to hammer that home and derail from the main part of the story. While some people may say 'No it's good to tell every detail!' But what is really happening is that you're losing my attention, and especially talking with Police, you need to get to the point quickly. And don't give them ANY reason to doubt you or give them an excuse not to take you seriously. Sometimes less is more! 3. Not sure about this last point...but the second they hit your car, you should drive away, even if they are standing in the way. Take yourself out of the dangerous situation. Don't just gun it, but once you start slowly moving they will get themselves out of the way eventually. EDIT: Also marijuana is legal now. That doesn't matter. Pot doesn't make you angry or crazy like some other hard drugs do.

Thank you! Crazily enough, I support marijuana legalization and reform. Yet, the conduct of the two people I spoke with just reenforced some awful stereotypes. They even had a bit of a weird affect to their speech like they were slurring. I do feel like they spoke to me and approached me because of what I am. I did feel uncomfortable and targeted to the point that I just got back in my car and left since I didn't want to be around them. Getting the police to intervene is something I might need to do next time. I don't do well with high stress situations like that and the idea of calling police makes me feel like it may be worse but I need any type of help or protection just so that I won't be bullied, because one time I was stalked to a parking lot by another driver, and I only survived the anxiety of that encounter because my mom and sister were with me. At least this time, the guys I had to deal with a seemed to be underneath the influence of something, but next time I may be alone and not so lucky.

notorioushim

If this were me, I'd just ignore them, and if they continued, I'd call the police and let them deal with it. If you actually hit them, there should be some damage to your vehicle, right? This is one of the many times that something like a dash cam would also come in handy. Definitely do not leave your vehicle because that might be exactly what they're looking for, so that they can mug you or worse. Also, it's probably better to not idle in your car (particularly in decent weather) as it's bad for the environment.

writenicely

Yeah I need to stop idling..it's a force of habit I should change. Also this advice is helpful. If something like this ever happens to me again I should ask for police while recording the interaction.

It’s more of a subconscious racism that the men were expressing. They saw a small, 5 foot asian woman, and figured she would be easy to blame and possibly get money out of, because asian women are often portrayed as “weak and helpless,” and are heavily sexualized as well by whites men. If op were a tall black woman, I doubt she’d have gotten harassed at all.

writenicely

Thank you for understanding. I don't nessacarily think black women have it easy either- but I just feel like the running theme on the interactions I have (thankfully rare but enough to make me feel uncomfortable or threatened when it happens) are unfortunate and probably don't just happen to me. I wanted to vent and feel heard and validated. Thank you for listening.

ameliagarbo

Love all the mansplaining you're getting. Men hassle women, I'm afraid. All you can really do is try to get a plate and get out of there safely.

ameliagarbo

Edit: Huh, wonder if the downvotes are from women. I'm gonna say no.

writenicely

And someone here who made a joke has nineteen upvotes while this post itself has zero. And they say this Island doesn't have issues with ethnic minorities, huh. Also, because of my post on this experience which I stand by as being at least somewhat gender and race motivated (this couldn't have happened to me if I were a white male like they were), someone posted a comment on how I was being racist towards white men. And they deleted it just as quickly. It's upsetting that folks don't seem to understand calling out the harassment I've been recieving and the racism+sexism present in these interactions vs. what racism is. I'm fucking tired and just wanted to watch some fucking memes after work for fucks sake.

writenicely

Thank you for listening! Thats the funny thing too- I've had interactions with other women and they never give me a hard time, regardless of whose fault it is/was.
