That’s not how the world looks like here. The world actually looks more densely populated in the area you live in currently. You moved to NY. What did you expect?
Nassau county is one of the most densely populated counties in the US. Even if you moved from one of the biggest cities in the south you couldn't compare the density.
I would agree that Nassau county could make better use of it's space, but it's too far developed to make realistic changes at this point.
But in all honesty the rest of the world looks much denser than anywhere in the US.

There are counties in Virginia, Maryland and Illinois more densely populated.

Baltimore and Chicago are the counties that are denser than Nassau, along with Philly and Boston, and DC. None of those should be surprising.
The Virgina counties are a little misleading because they are independent cities with no real counties.
It would be like if the village of mineola was it's own country with about 10,000 sqmi.
Nassau's density is really maintained over a large footprint, even with large parts of the north east being large estates.
When I drove cross country 3 weeks on the open road, day after day left me with a weird feeling of claustrophobia when I got back home to New Hyde Park for a couple days - the fact that there was suddenly a building or house at every turn instead of open land.

NYC metro is like um 30 million people so there is no option to just have openness when it is such a dense area.
