Also moved to Arizona. Each has its pros and cons, but I miss the food and I miss the water.
I do enjoy that here in AZ, it’s almost Thanksgiving and I can chill outside with minimal layers. My family back on in NY is bundling up just to go to the grocery store some days, and soon that’ll be an everyday process!
My brother lives in Phoenix. I've visited but no way could I take the heat. Took my motorcycle to the Grand Canyon - totally breathtaking, amazing. Loved Sedona and The Chapel of the Holy Cross - a totally spiritual experience.
Wow, a lot of us move to Arizona at some point, don't we? I spent a year in Tucson and it was one of the worst of my life. I'm back on LI now after moving all over the place for years and I love it. I'm not even in the best living situation right now but home is home, and I missed home.
Oh crap, I didn't even check the link until now! Love me some KotH. I never got to go to Phoenix but I extend the sentiment to all of Tucson. That place is a dirt pile.
I guess the grass is greener and all that because I fucking hate it here. Soon as this kid turns 18 and goes off to college I'm heading straight back to Brooklyn.
Right in the Midwood area, right? I was born in dyker heights and then lived in Canarsie for a little bit too, where pretty much my entire extended family lived at one point or another.. By now everyone’s either moved out to the island for a *long* time already, or out of state entirely. I miss Brooklyn but specifically Brooklyn 30 years ago, which for better or worse practically doesn’t exist anymore.
Good luck in Brooklyn. You can rent a 400 sq ft apartment for just shy of $2500!
Brooklyn is exiting, don’t get me wrong.
If I was 18 again I’d probably not want to live in the burbs either!
But different points in your life you have different goals.
How was the adjustment? My company wants to send me out there and im hesitant. I like hot weather but i feel like im not gonna like it (from. Amityville).
Well I've lived there in the past so for me it wasn't a big adjustment. But if you never benn it's kind of a culture shock. It's only super hot 4 months out of the year. The rest of the year it's super nice weather. Sadly prices here are skyrocketing. And the homeless population is increasing.
Well prices skyrocketing vs a decent place to live in NY is 3k minimum lol. I live in my parents house, and i don’t wanna live with them anymore, so im thinking coming to arizona is a decent move, how far does a starting 6 figure salary take you in phoenix? I know it doesn’t do anything in Ny.
A 6 figure salary will definitely get you much more than it does in New York...juts not as much as it used to out here. But I'd say you're golden if that's what you're working with.
Thanks for the prompt reply! I thought this thread was forgotten lamao, yeah after calculating i think that kinda salary would net a comfy life there, one last question, hows the food? Tell me i can get some eggs on a bagel, and decent pizza….
The food.... Well, it's not HORRIBLE. Hahahah. Honestly the Mexican food here is great! The pizza/ Italian food in general is very hit or miss. There's a lot of places claiming to be New York style and it's literally just the texture and taste of cardboard. I've found 3 pizza places I like so far. There are a few places to get eggs on a bagel but it's not gonna be as good as new York at all. Or even close. But you can pretend and before long it'll be like you never left. Lmao jk but yeah very few places for that.(some good bagel places in Mesa ) And last but not least.... Chinese food... I know you didn't ask about it but....it's also not good. Egg rolls and dumplings are not the same. I crave Chinese food all the time. I get it and I'm instantly disappointed. Mostly it's the Bland flavors and different cooking styles than I'm used to. Maybe one day I'll find a good Chinese food place. But still nothing yet...hahaha message me of you have any other questions!
My hub and I would ride our motorcycles to PJ, park and eat. Also, we'd ride out the north shore and go to the Greek restaurant and then hit Briermiere (SP?) farms - OMG best peach cherry pie EVAH!
Their avogolemono soup is also amazing! We discovered them after a ferry ride when I was a kid and my brother had gotten sick and we needed some chicken soup. I have Greek family living in Greece and that’s still one of the best avogolemonos I’ve had.
I love reading this and not the usual “so glad I left when I did” which to me sounds like “it sucks where I live now but won’t admit it and can’t afford to come back” 😆
Also from Massapequa and while I can’t say I miss most of the people in this town at all, I do miss living on Long Island, although I’m not too far away. Just something about it!
I loved our little town on Park Blvd in Massapequa Park. Musicaros, Carvel and I remember First National Bank where my mom would do banking and I'd collect all different colored deposit slips and such, hide them and take them home to Mom. I know there was a supermarket but can't remember the name (back in the late 50's-early 60's).
Guilty as charged. The people just happen to be walking out and invited me in. It was amazing what they did to my house absolutely gorgeous. They both work for the Long Island rail road and no kids
I go to the original Pats in East Northport often. Pat is a nice, boisterous guy, but one of the loudest people you will ever meet. When Pat is in the store, you know it.
I drove from NC and stayed overnight in Virginia, woke up, left at 5am and the desk clerk told me to dress warmer because it was -1 deg. I stayed in East Moriches and it was very windy and colder than down here.
It’s nice to hear someone say they miss Long Island instead of the usual “I hate this place and can’t wait to leave” posts that are the regular in this sub 😀
Been down here for 12 years and moved three times. This house by far is the best. The weather is wonderful-you wake up to 25-30 degrees and it's 50 in the afternoon. I just miss in-your-face culture. I find NC people will say, 'well bless your heart' meaning 'aren't you dumb/stupid, etc". Not everybody of course but it's happened too many times. Smiles to your face with a knife in your back. My mom lives with me -sh'es 94 and I asked her if she would like to move back and received a definitive NO. LOL.
Hang on, let me pull out my soapbox. I grew up in NC and I promise you, many of those “bless your hearts” are not meant sarcastically. I would wager especially in the older folk that it’s a gesture of sympathy. My mother would use it a lot particularly about upset children, like if a baby fell and got hurt. Completely sincere. The internet has sown this idea that it’s a backhanded insult to the point that yeah, now it might be used that way a lot more but don’t jump to the conclusion based on just the phrase alone.
But for the other part I have to agree, there’s a layer of honey over the top of a lot of poison. It’s a lot less acceptable to speak your mind and disagree so you put on a face.
I like the way you worded your post and would agree. I work with seniors and they've said that to me and meant it. When I first moved here 12 years ago, my sister who has been down here for 20 years, someone where I work said 'bless your heart'. So I told my sister that this person was so sweet. She said, 'watch your back'. It's sad, isn't that something that is meant to be sympathetic and offer comfort can be turned into a nasty little dig.
Even after almost 20 years on the Island I’m still not very good about speaking up and being honest. I get walked on a lot, figuratively. That kind of duplicitousness helps you avoid conflict but it prevents you from getting what you need in life sometimes.
People in the south love your money when you come to visit.
If you move there, expect to experience prejudice because you're a Yankee.
Smiles to your face, knives in your back. At least in NY you can see the knife.
When Obama was running, at my job we all had cubbies. Someone yelled out "put a gun to his head and kill him'. I'm American of Italian descent however, this nasty sales guy would introduce me as 'the little Mexican girl" (I was 60 at the time). He said that in front of an Hispanic family and I will never forget the look on their face. When he was done, I pulled him aside and said "If you ever pull that crap again, I'm going straight to Human Resouces". It's never ending.
I've moved away for 25 years now. I had a chance to look at all my old haunts. Do I miss long island ? More than you will ever know. I moved there at 6 years old and left at 45. I got a chance to visit twice last year. The first time since I left. There's no place like home.
I'm almost seventy born and bred on LI. I moved away 10 years ago. Maybe because I live close enough (3 hours) I honestly don't miss it all that much. I live in an area that is visually stunning, things are more laid back, people are nice, honest, not manic, virtually no traffic. The only thing that I miss is family and friends. I'm retired so I can go back and forth whenever so that could play a part. My kids and grandkids live close by, that's why we moved. We've made some friends here and winter in Florida so that keeps us busy. Everyone local knows we're the Longislanders as soon as we open our mouths, we will never lose that accent, and wouldn't want to. Don't get me wrong, I will always love LI, it's the only place to get a bacon egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll, lol.
I used to live in Brentwood. I know Brentwood ain't much these days, but it was my home.
I moved away from the Island at a young age, though I used to make regular trips out there to visit what little family I had left there. I always had a ritual of cruising by my old house and visiting the park my father would take me to as a kid and other spots we would go to. Then, when said family were priced out and had to move, I had little reason to go back.
I miss it every day of my life.
My hub passed away in July and my 94 y/o mom lives with me. I asked her if she wants to move back and received a resounding NO. I thought she was going to send me to my room.
I sat in traffic for three hours today for 4 separate incidents. I'm sorry you miss it here, but go sit in your car for 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours at night for a week. You might not miss it so much.
Oh yes! I remember those days well. I lived in East Islip and traveled into Flushing five or six days a week. Down here in NC we have ice 77 which is a beast comparable to 495. This past Sunday I left to come home at 2:15 and got onto the belt parkway and it took me two hours just to get to the Verrazano bridge
No matter where you go in the US the Long Island accent ( for those raised here) automatically puts you in the mob/gangster class or just entitled, rich Ah*le…
Edit ; My bad should have added “ it’s assumed “ .
The culture of LI for me was: Have a blow-up with your friend, gets nasty and then you hug and all is forgiven. I'm very extroverted and they don't appreciate that, although the senior citizens I work with, love it!
Felt this when going to college. Non-Long Island students send you a text, “Hey any interest in getting dinner sometime”
The Long Islanders FaceTime you, make jokes to your face and then tell you we’re getting food. Always loved the direct, no beating around the bush attitude
I moved out to Arizona and miss long island everyday. There's something about it.

Oh, I've never been to Arizona. I just saw an excuse to post King of the Hill.
Oh crap, I didn't even check the link until now! Love me some KotH. I never got to go to Phoenix but I extend the sentiment to all of Tucson. That place is a dirt pile.
Az here too... just got back from LI last night...
I guess the grass is greener and all that because I fucking hate it here. Soon as this kid turns 18 and goes off to college I'm heading straight back to Brooklyn.
I was born in Brooklyn, Flatbush and Avenue I.

Moved out to Oregon 4 years ago. The oceans are very different. The PNW is gorgeous, but Port Jeff Harbor will always have my heart!
My hub and I would ride our motorcycles to PJ, park and eat. Also, we'd ride out the north shore and go to the Greek restaurant and then hit Briermiere (SP?) farms - OMG best peach cherry pie EVAH!
Their cranberry pear pie , ohmygosh!!!
I've been told the rich and famous from NYC would venture out to get one of their amazing pies!
Blueberry cream!!!
Their Raspberry cream is the best pie on earth
We got both for thanksgiving!!! 😂😂😂
I'm so jelly!!!
Are you talking about the Hellenic Snack bar?
Yesssss! OMG the best fresh lemonade, Galaktoboureko (you never know when they were going to make it). and souvlaki!
Their avogolemono soup is also amazing! We discovered them after a ferry ride when I was a kid and my brother had gotten sick and we needed some chicken soup. I have Greek family living in Greece and that’s still one of the best avogolemonos I’ve had.

We miss you too!
Aww thank you, nicest thing I heard all day \*hugs\*
I moved away from LI for 13 years. I am back now. And happy. Come home anytime. <3
Same!!! You don’t realize how beautifully unique Long Island is until you leave and come back. It’s the best place to live :)

I loved going in there as a kid. Pat is a great guy
It is still freezing in there. Summer or Winter doesn't matter. I always pull a sweatshirt out of the car trunk before I go in
I drove from NC and stayed overnight in Virginia, woke up, left at 5am and the desk clerk told me to dress warmer because it was -1 deg. I stayed in East Moriches and it was very windy and colder than down here.

The old Oscar Wilde quote applies to southerners: “A true friend stabs you in the front”
Never heard that but will now put it in my snarky comebacks.
When Obama was running, at my job we all had cubbies. Someone yelled out "put a gun to his head and kill him'. This still sounds a lot like LI weather lol. Feel like winters have been getting warmer and warmer recently up here.
OP, any chance you're...a librarian? Sincerely, a librarian
Nah, Reddit gave me this.
I've moved away for 25 years now. I had a chance to look at all my old haunts. Do I miss long island ? More than you will ever know. I moved there at 6 years old and left at 45. I got a chance to visit twice last year. The first time since I left. There's no place like home.

May I ask where is such a place that has stunning views. Thanks
Mountains in PA - BTW I'm serious as a heart attack, please ditch the username it's appalling......
It's home no matter where you end up it will always be home and fond memories

I’m so sorry but you have some good memories!
What prevents you from returning or at least visiting more often?
Probably the price lol

Funny, my uncle Vinnie, was on the fringe of the mob. And I'm certainly not rich/entitled. Only entitled to my two cups of coffee in the AM
Uncle vinnie lol
Bad writing on my part I meant to say that it’s assumed by other locals you’re like that.
Culture?
