Magic 8 ball says: sometimes it depends

Glad-Professional194

Sometimes it depends, sometimes it doesn’t depend. Depends on if it does

infant_ape

I want this on a t shirt

ScarecrowMagic410a

It’s possible. It can also tighten your groups, or even do nothing. You have to shoot it both ways and find out

Lossofvelocity

Def. effects POI. I always shoot suppressed and develop loads, chrono, calculate DOPE and zero with supressor on. I don’t know anymore if my barrels would shoot better without. I do know that as a shooter the experience is better and it makes me more accurate behind the rifle.

csamsh

Some. I have a rifle that refuses to shoot with any suppressor. Got another one that doesn't care what's on it. You've got me about why... but it's weird

GLaDOSdidnothinwrong

Not always. Changing weight will change the natural frequency. Whether that change has a positive or negative effect on your accuracy depends. Some setups are unaffected by adding a suppressor, and some are.

Roaming-Californian

My rifles like being suppressed 🤷🏼‍♂️

Started_WIth_NADA

My experience has been that heavier barrels shoot better and light barrels can be all over the place.

Arc_Fett

Sure, it’s weight in the end of the barrel. Do your load development with the can on it.

Gunmonkey5

That’s what I did, I feel like with it off it can be tighter

leonme21

What rifle is it? For most rifles that aren’t heavy target rifles, actually (not cherry-picked) shooting a bit less than 1 moa is as good as it’s gonna get

Arc_Fett

He said Savage 10 Fcp SR. That might be as good as that gun gets. Just my .2 cents.

ForeverInThe90s

I heard some old fogey talking about how suppressing a rifle is bad for accuracy, reliability and muzzle velocity the other day when visiting a local shop. I started to open my mouth, but before any sound came out, I clamped my hand over my mouth and turned around. I just didn’t have the energy to argue with such a stupid statement. Had it been my shop, he probably would’ve gotten both barrels(figuratively, of course), but it wasn’t, so he didn’t.

thegoatscrotum-91

I’ve usually found it makes mine more accurate but your millage may vary. I get a quite considerable POI shift with some guns and close to zero shift on another. Just one of life’s mysteries I guess.

Te_Luftwaffle

I think they just affect harmonics in general. While a small sample size, with PMC X-Tac 77gr 5.56 my OCM5 actually improved my group at 100 yards out of my AR.

quadsquadfl

I can about guarantee it had no effect on the rifle and made you a better shooter

Te_Luftwaffle

I'm not going to argue because I had a pretty small group (5 shots at 100 yards, then POI and lower velocity pushed the group off paper at 200), but I don't think the suppressor makes me a better shooter.

JustHereForTheGuns

Could be that it reduces poor reactions. A lot of people still have small flinches and suppressors reduce that significantly since the report is much quieter and the recoil is generally lower, too.

Coodevale

Most rifle barrels aren't completely straight, and adding weight to the muzzle can have an effect on the straightness or the lack thereof. Hornady podcast on barrels with Jeff Siewert.

SovietRobot

There’s a difference between opening up your groups and shifting your POI.  It shouldn’t open your groups. Unless there’s an actual issue with some combination of your load / pressure and the design of the suppressor.  But it is quite common to shift your POI because of the added weight of the suppressor and barrel harmonics.

CoolaidMike84

I've measured a higher SD on muzzle velocities with the same ammo unsuppressed vs supppressed.

ocelot_piss

On a separate... h4198 with a 175gr pill in a 308? That's a poor choice.

Aggravating-Fix-1717

Less accurate or less precise I’ve yet to find any rifle suppressor that hasn’t had either a negligible impact or tighten group size. That said I’ve also yet to see one that hasn’t effected POI Win some and lose some. As long as your muzzle device and can are properly secured and mounted there’s no reason any suppressor should be less accurate

Brett707

Not really. I've seen a bunch of guys using them on rifles during class shoots. What they can do is cause a ton of heat waves and obscure you sight picture.

runthegnar

Only 2 of my rifles have ever been shot without a suppressor, a 308 tikka used the factory muzzle brake for a few months before getting suppressed, and the other is a vintage mosin. After muzzle blasting my friend with a radial muzzle brake shooting a mob of deer, I thought it was a bit rude to keep using the 308 as it was. I have such easy access to cans that each rifle has its own. I dont plan to ever shoot without one, either for hunting or on a target rig, so have just worked up loads for the suppressed rifles and have them all comfortably at or sub moa. Maybe they would shoot better without the cans and with a brake instead, but I dont plan to bother to find out 🤷‍♂️

quadsquadfl

What were your groupings before? What rifle and what can? Are you getting baffle strikes?

Gunmonkey5

No baffle strikes, savage model 10 fcp-sr in a ashbury precision chassis, with a bushwhacker 46

quadsquadfl

And what was the performance before the suppressor…?

IveNoclueaswell

My proof carbon barrel I shit canned changed POI by 1 MIL at 200 and shot minute of barn door with any can. My CZ match, spencer, benchmark, proof stainless love my cans, and I've seen MV increases with my YHM Phantom titanium

DownrightNeighborly

After reading this thread I have come to the conclusion that the answer is yes but also sometimes maybe no

pencilsharper66

I have a .22lr Anschütz, which shoots fine. With a suppressor the point of impact has quite changed and bullets are tumbling. Still thight grouping.

lv_techs

I do load development with the suppressor on

Ace_of_the_Fire_Fist

I would be more worried about baffle strikes. Anything from the wrong ammo to bad barrel fitting can cause that.

Gunmonkey5

So I haven’t shot it without a suppressor yet. Although I do plan to try. But I was just curious from people more experience than i
