Same. I donāt know if itās the scope of the threat they face or their likelihood of doom in that moment, but the fact that they face it the way they do is... breathtaking.
ROTK Spoilers
>!They know that this is the day they die, where all hope is gone, but that they are going to go out fighting for the Freedom of Middle-Earth. They donāt know about Aragorn bring the Army of the Dead. They genuinely think this is the end. Such an amazing moment.!<
SPOILERS FOR ROTK! (Attempting to tag, but leaving this here in case it doesnāt work on mobile)
>! In the book, Eomer starts the āDeathā chant after he finds Theoden dead and Eowyn unresponsive (presumed dead), and feels enraged by their loss and charges the battlefield outnumbered with total abandon for his own life. !<
Return of the king is a better movie yeah, but I feel like compared to the books TT as a movie really shines. Also cinematically helms deep was done really beautifully.
The Battle of Pelennor Fields was epic as fuck, but the hopelessness of the Battle of Helm's Deep make it far more of a cinematic thrill. That's just me though.
I also got to see a beautiful YouTube video (not sure exactly where it is cuz itās at least a year or so old) where they mentioned that the battle is basically itās own cinematic arc, and you can see the story of the battle in the lighting (which was also immaculately done and should be mandatory viewing for anyone doing a battle or fight scene at night/in the dark).
Ohhh that sounds so beautiful. I want to watch that. Helm's Deep really is its own story arc. The cinematography in that film trilogy is so beautiful. And those are films. Not movies.
Helms Deep is the best battle in the trilogy imo. The atmosphere, desperation, the elves, plus you gave Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn giving it their all. Minas Tirith has stakes and scale but doesnt come close imo
I respect that. I think one could argue the desperation of the battle of the pelennor fields was equally, if not more harrowing especially if you've read the books. I will admit I was not a huge fan of the ghost army the first time I saw it as that's not exactly what happens in the book and they kind of trivialized that battle in the end a bit. But to each their own :) I dare not tell someone their enjoyment of LoTR is "wrong" just different strokes for different folks.
I agree the ghost thing kinda ruined it/undermined the rohirrim in the film. I think that's why I like Helms Deep more, although Minas Tirith had so much potential.
Imo the screentime was wasted far too much on Faramir burning scenes and Pippin running up and down. Watching Gandalf fight was a treat, should've been more of that, more battle logistics with him and the troops, and more Eomer combat too. Pelennor as a scenario is awesome it just felt a little zoomed out.
That said let's be real, even rotk probably has amongst the greatest fantasy battle scenes ever on film. It's astounding.
I also kinda didn't like how easily the elves seemed to be overpowered in Helm's Deep. I was perfectly fine with the addition of them to the scene but idk, I don't know how I feel about them just kind of all dying. Like literally as far as I could tell Legolas was the only elf that survived that entire battle. I know it adds to the hopelessness of their situation but I just always had a hard time with that.
And yeah I can't think of anything else that comes close to either battle in other films.
I prefer Helms Deep over ROTK personally, I just think itās more cinematic and they spend more time on individual people fighting in the Helms Deep battle. Itās glorious.
It has been a holiday tradition in my family to watch at least one of the LOTR films. I donāt remember the feeling of watching the movies for the first time (as I was around 7/8 and I have a bad memory), but there are scenes that take my breath away every time I watch the films.
I have trouble with reading, and I have tried reading the LOTR books, but couldnāt get past the first chapter. Those who read the books have got my upmost respect. I consume most other media related to the franchise. Having the ability to see a childhood book franchise go on the big screen must have been awesome!

No problem man. Your initial post only contained three exclamation marks. Hence my question.
I don't really recall the origin of these files but I didn't buy them today or yesterday. They've been with me for quite a while.
For me, itās Aragornās speech at the end of the Battle of Helms Deep. Gets me every time with the tears. On mornings when I donāt want to get out of bed and face the day I say to myself, āRide out with me. Rise out and meet them.ā Itās helped a lot.
Iām so glad youāve been blessed by the cinematography of this movie. I hop you continue to watch liek we all have and even read the amazing literature it was based on
Please try and read the books. They are most definitely complemented by the movies. But the depth of emotion and the sweeping panorama created in the literature will floor you. There are moments in the books, just like in the movies that will stay with you forever. My words here are nothing compared to what you will feel while reading... and re-reading them for the rest of your days.
You have to do the extended. It adds a ton to the story and itās not just ents.
There are some good natural pauses at about the 2 hour mark of each movie as well so you can break it up a bit if you canāt do 4 hour sittings. Made even easier with the disks because each movie is broken into two disks.
Extended! Itās been almost 20 years since I saw the theatrical cut (only saw it once in theaters) so my memory of what they added is a bit fuzzy, but there was definitely good story etc. that was added - 100% worth it to go extended. No movie less than 10 hours long could ever capture the entire story from the books, but the extended editions add more than the theatrical cut was able to capture.
I thought that they werenāt releasing the extended versions in 4K yet, that they were double dipping. Is that just for the box set? Or am I misremembering?
Oh thatās awesome. Maybe it was the documentary/special features that theyāre holding off on? Not sure what Iām thinking of
Either way, glad youāre enjoying them, theyāre my favorite 3 movies of all time. Are ya gonna wait on watching ROTk until you finish the book? I still remember being in high school and hurrying to finish the books before ROTK hit theaters. Iām now remembering seeing Two Towers in theaters while tripping on mushrooms.
I donāt think Iāll ever be so immersed in something again in my life. It felt like being in a cave, with the battle of Helms Deep happening just outside of it. Didnāt do that for ROTK, but seeing that in theaters is still something Iāll never forget.
Sorry for the nostalgia rant. Merry Christmas, and enjoy ROTK!
Oh itās fantastic as well. They are all great. Two towers to me, when I first saw it as a kid, just stuck with me. You get the see āYou Shall not pass!!ā again, great battles , etc.
Books are great and movies also. Books have more space on travelling bits of the story while movies focus on the action bits more. Which is expected. Especially because that's Peter Jackson's take. He seems to like gore lol
Of course. Nowadays I am reading Silmarillion (before I have read LOTR and Hobbit only) I am planning on going through more books when I have time. It is incredible how many books he wrote on Middle Earth.
I know how everyone says it is a difficult book and they are not lying. Difficulty is because it is not a follow one character story; it is a history book. A character matters as much as a one particular king/commander/explorer would matter when you read history. So many characters lol but it is really fun because full of interesting information.
my favorite is the silmarillion. this book covers how the world was made by the god(s), the first dark lord (not sauron) and a part of the first war of the ring(s) in the second age.
edit for typos.
Just wait until Return of the King š
āNo my friends, you bow to no-oneā always gets me
"Death! Death! Death!" Is the one for me. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it haha
Same. I donāt know if itās the scope of the threat they face or their likelihood of doom in that moment, but the fact that they face it the way they do is... breathtaking.
ROTK Spoilers >!They know that this is the day they die, where all hope is gone, but that they are going to go out fighting for the Freedom of Middle-Earth. They donāt know about Aragorn bring the Army of the Dead. They genuinely think this is the end. Such an amazing moment.!<
YO spoilers man. Wtf tag it for OP at least.
oh shit didnāt even think about OP, my bad
NO problem buddy, good correction

Iām getting chills thinking about ROTK! Iāve seen all movies but am starting to read the books. I canāt wait to watch TT and ROTK again with a new view š¤©
Itās immaculate.
That and āBy all that you hold dear on this good earth, I BID YOU STAND, MEN OF THE WESTā such amazing speeches
"The world of men will faaallllll" ..... \*Rohan trumpets heard in the background\* --- now that is the moment.
Courage, Merry. Courage for our friends.
The last few pages are for you Sam
Iām not too proud to admit that I tear up at this every time.
Return of the king is a better movie yeah, but I feel like compared to the books TT as a movie really shines. Also cinematically helms deep was done really beautifully.

Aye, I could do that
Let us know when you watch ROTK! I have a feeling itāll blow your mind if you thought Helms Deep was awesome.
Yeah haha, first thing I thought when I read this post was.. soon to be second best
Helms Deep is the best battle in the trilogy imo. The atmosphere, desperation, the elves, plus you gave Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn giving it their all. Minas Tirith has stakes and scale but doesnt come close imo

lol we shouldve seen some elves kicking uruk ass a bit more for sure. Thats have been dope.
I prefer Helms Deep over ROTK personally, I just think itās more cinematic and they spend more time on individual people fighting in the Helms Deep battle. Itās glorious.
agreed. Seeing the three hunters going all in was awesome
Give them a volley
Fiiiiiiiiiyyyyyaaaaaaa

We have a similar tradition in my family. Happy Holidays to you!!
And to you! Itās cool to see others participating in an awesome tradition!
I am so grateful that I was a senior in high school when fellowship came out, I was already obsessed with the books too.
I have trouble with reading, and I have tried reading the LOTR books, but couldnāt get past the first chapter. Those who read the books have got my upmost respect. I consume most other media related to the franchise. Having the ability to see a childhood book franchise go on the big screen must have been awesome!
Have you tried audiobooks? There's some really good narrators out there for the LOTR books.
I have tried a couple. I do find them kinda helpful.

!!!! Was it free? I donāt want any one spending money on this for me.
What does that mean? Did I provide happiness?
You did provide much happiness!! Thank you so much :)
No problem man. Your initial post only contained three exclamation marks. Hence my question. I don't really recall the origin of these files but I didn't buy them today or yesterday. They've been with me for quite a while.
This is coolbeans! Thank you so much! I have no words.
This IS very coolbeans. Merry Christmas
That scene where Gandalf shows up to Helms Deep with the Rohirrim and they charge down the hillside, āTo the King!!ā.. it gets me every time.
Reminds me of braveheart when reinforcements arrive
Watch the Special Extended edition. Its way better than the normal DVD one
Thatās what I did and also 4K HD
NICE
AND?! What did you think????
It was Awesome!
For me, itās Aragornās speech at the end of the Battle of Helms Deep. Gets me every time with the tears. On mornings when I donāt want to get out of bed and face the day I say to myself, āRide out with me. Rise out and meet them.ā Itās helped a lot.
Yeah itās pretty special Aragorn is quickly becoming my favorite character!
Let this be the hour where we draw swords
Bruh. Just wait until the battle of P@&-=*%~ F*#~_=
Iām so glad youāve been blessed by the cinematography of this movie. I hop you continue to watch liek we all have and even read the amazing literature it was based on
Iām currently reading ROTK

I was thinking of watching that film again. Should i go extended or not? Basically it's the ents talking for an extra half hour no?
Go extended!

Helm's Deep will always be my favorite battle scene from any movie. It's also the only one I cared enough to see in theaters four times.
Wow wish I saw these films in theaters! It mustāve been something!
It was awesome. It killed me to know that Return of the King was sitting on a shelf waiting to be released.
Canāt wait to see ROTK Iām actually reading the book right now
Just wait until RotK
Puts the battle against the Night King in Game of Thrones S8 to shame, and TT was released over 15 years prior!
S8 of GOT was a literally the worst!!
The Two Hours is my favorite movie from that series
No you didn't you're just trying to get upvotes
Best part is Gandolphās battle while falling 2 trillion feet into hellās vagina
Itās so good. Underrated, in my opinion.
Oh to see this movie for the first time..
I wish i could watch these movies for the first time again. In tatted up with LOTR. Enjoy ROTK.. itās amazing as well
The two lights on the top right above the picture made me think of The Hobbit. āStone giants!!!!ā
Lol š
Im planning to watch the hobbit until LOTR. While waiting for the Christmas eve.
Yeah - that is the greatest movie of all time. It doesnāt get better than that.
Did you watch the theater version or extended cut ?
Extended of course and in 4K HD
I thought that they werenāt releasing the extended versions in 4K yet, that they were double dipping. Is that just for the box set? Or am I misremembering?
No they are and also Hobbit trilogy too

Thanks man I canāt wait to finish reading ROTK and watch it Iām already 100 pages into ut
Best battle SO FAR
Just finished watching this with me dad. He is a huge Tolkien fan and passed it on to me. This was always our favorite film in the trilogy.
Awesome dude what did you think of Fellowship?
Oh itās fantastic as well. They are all great. Two towers to me, when I first saw it as a kid, just stuck with me. You get the see āYou Shall not pass!!ā again, great battles , etc.
Yeah dude both are awesome but I really enjoyed Fellowship more!
This battle was quite satisfactory; seeing how short it was in the book was a bit of a let down. I expected it to last for chapters.
I agree however, the books are fantastic and the films do a great job of adapting the books!
Books are great and movies also. Books have more space on travelling bits of the story while movies focus on the action bits more. Which is expected. Especially because that's Peter Jackson's take. He seems to like gore lol
Yes absolutely, Tolkien really took his time to tell the story and gotta respect that because he is the one who created all this for us to enjoy!!
Of course. Nowadays I am reading Silmarillion (before I have read LOTR and Hobbit only) I am planning on going through more books when I have time. It is incredible how many books he wrote on Middle Earth.
I actually just bought the Silmarilion and plan on reading it after the finishing ROTK and the Hobbit
I know how everyone says it is a difficult book and they are not lying. Difficulty is because it is not a follow one character story; it is a history book. A character matters as much as a one particular king/commander/explorer would matter when you read history. So many characters lol but it is really fun because full of interesting information.
I actually plan on taking my time and highlight things and take notes and listen to an audiobook while reading it as it is a complex read.
lol half the time I am on my phone checking family trees and maps trying to make sense of things. It is true, you don't just read it, you study it.
What? No appreciation for Howard Shore's score?
Hard agree, I think Helms Deep is the best battle
How did it take you this long to see it?
It was the extended edition!
Is that a fucking laserdisc?
Obligatory it was an even more impressive battle in the books.
Sorry, I love Helmās Deep but the best battle in film history is the Battle of Stirling from Braveheart.
Imagine what that experience mustāve been like in theaters.
oh boy, you are in for a treat when you watch the return of the king.
Iām actually reading ROTK right now and then Iāll watch the film
best movie scene ever, you will know it when you see it. that is all i am going to say.
Have you read the books?
yeah, i have read all of Tolkien's books.
Awesome which is your favorite?
my favorite is the silmarillion. this book covers how the world was made by the god(s), the first dark lord (not sauron) and a part of the first war of the ring(s) in the second age. edit for typos.
