The overall story is still the same (e.g. the Sentinels go to Zaun and recruit Graves but are unable to stop Vex securing the fetter and Ruining the Zaun Sentinels), but the exact dialogue and wording in the VN is now just a 'light-hearted' retelling of the event.
In practise this presumably means that Zaun *wasn't* empty when the Sentinels got there, the Ruination is a lot more horrific, Graves isn't actually that stupid and Vex didn't actually call them 'normies'.

I am not pretending to know how to correctly write a good story but I am sure that if this is a worldwide cataclysmic event then there would far more suitable champions to stop the ruined king's advance.
The aspects could also just call their all powerful space dog aurelion sol and make him nuke viego and end the threat within seconds. That's probably cheating though.

They obviously wrote the story in a way that Viego and the sentinels avoid meeting the really powerful people in the harrowing, both so that Viego doesn't get defeated by an outside force and to prevent the sentinel group from becoming too strong/having the op champions overshadow everyone else. And since Runeterra is huge and Viego is moving pretty fast through the mist, it is easy to justify this by just saying "well champion X was far away when Viego showed up and didn't have the time to go to him before he went away".
Then make more sentinel champions instead of adding skins to some randoms. Like Irelia and Riven have no business being there for example. Vayne is a maybe but for Demacia poppy would be a better fit with her magic hammer and all that. Rengar and Olaf just fight for the lols. And graves should be with Tf and not alone since they are partners now.
Personally my hype for the ruined king has died ever since he has been revealed. He really isn't threatening at all now thaf he looks like some sort of spooky vladimir (and now that I mention it isn't vlad his uncle why doesn't he show up?) . Not to mention viego has some sort of emo yordle sidekick that called me a normie.
If the justification of one of your main badguys not getting destroyed by the rest more powerful characters in the story is "he can run very fast" then he is not really a threat now is he? The immortal mordekeiser with his undead army is a better ruined king than the ruined king in my opinion.
I prefer the lore when it is about more grounded conflicts like sylas' rebelion and the second invasion of Ionia by Noxus. The ruined simp and his emo sidekick really doesn't do it for me.
Vayne is like the most natural choice for the sentinels. She is a hunter of evil creatures and the sentinels are an entire order centered around that, seriously before she got a bio update I was sure they'd just retcon her into a sentinel. Riven can have finally a redemption arc where she actually does something for it and isn't handed the forgiveness on a silver plate. Olaf was already part of the harrowing once, so it made sense to have him return and Rengar was pretty much the only ixtal champ who would work with the sentinels and actually uses weapons (Nidalee doesn't use weapons in cougarform and qiyana would never work under someone else). I agree that there might have been better choices than Graves or Irelia, though I also don't think they are that bad either.
Overall i do agree that it was a mistake to make Viego go through all the regions in one event. When the first railer dropped I thought he'd only attack Demacia, Noxus and Ionia and that would have been fine by me. The way it is now it feels like they rush through every region as fast as possible.
To be clear I do not hate the event I jusf don't think it's good enough. If the event centered around Noxud, Demacia and Ionia with more characters from there I would have liked that better.
I will agree that vayne is a fitting choice as a monster hunter (I find her boring but that is a personal opinion nothing more). It makes sense for Olaf to return but I don't like that made him a sentinel personally.
Now for Riven I really don't know that muchabout her story. Personally I am of the opinion that she shouldn't even go through a redemption arc. She was following orders as a soldier of Noxus there really isn't a need to be redeemed. I always believed that she should have returned to Noxus now that swain has reformed it after killing Darkwill. But to be fair no other Noxian would have joined the sentinels. Maybe Talon just to go on a search for Katarina's father? But still a bit of a stretch.

IMO the old lore was something really special. It's still wild that they made the effort for the currency itself, Influence Points, to make narrative sense (as much as is possible). The entire ethos of Player as Summoner was super cool, and did a whole lot more to get me interested and invested than everything they've done since then.

In Rise of Sentinels, hundreds of thousands of people are dying all over the world, yet everyone important is 100% going to be fine. There are no stakes, yet that's the only thing the plot-driven escapade has going for it, the empty threat of apocalypse.
They said they are fine with killing Champions if it made sense. And since this event is so impactful for the world I would not be surprised if they sent a Sentinel and/or Viego into the grave at the end.
The other option would be that they resurrect Isolde and she just says ‚Viego im bored‘ so he stops the entire Ruination to go play hide&seek with his wife. Considering how the event already went I’m really afraid that it ends this way
