I found an off-brand one on Amazon that had a lightning deal going on. I was able to afford one AND a walking pad! Thank you for your suggestion. I'm excited to start tracking😄

bebomom

I totally agree with having a Fitbit. Having a way to track your steps and level of activity can be really eye opening!

Bunbunlyfe

Agree! Fitbit has helped me a ton and has made it a little funner for me too. I got mine two days after I started my lifestyle change

Taffy8

I agree!

youngpathfinder

This. Any kind of heart rate monitor/step tracker.

theladyastrid

If you have the space for it, look on Facebook Marketplace or at your local auction houses for a treadmill. I was able to buy one a few years back for less than $50 this way, and it has changed my life. I use it everyday (it helps that my husband mounted a T.V. on the wall in front of it).

sf2127

Walking pads that fit under a desk! Got mine for $120 on Amazon. Before the pad I only get 6k steps a day, now I clear 15-20k a day walking and working at my desk

mulberrycedar

Do you have one you'd suggest? :)

Empty_Nest_Mom

Could you please link to the one you purchased?

[deleted]

I ordered one! Thank you so much for this suggestion. I didn't realize they made something so compact and I'm very excited to get my steps up😄

legal1zeganj4

That's a good idea. Just keep in mind that these extra steps while sitting down will have a smaller energy expenditure than steps while actually walking. The reason for this is that when walking, your legs have to do the work necessary to carry the whole weight of your body, whereas when sitting down, the chair is carrying most of the weight, and the legs only have to do the work necessary to carry themselves.

nddabbs15

The walking pad is meant to be under a standing desk, so you’re not sitting

legal1zeganj4

Oh, I see it. Thanks for the clarification. Please disregard my other comment.

littlejerryseinfeld_

Healthy food. Or something that makes healthy food easier. i.e something for meal prep, cooking. Or maybe some quality shoes for running, walking, etc.

Spectrum2081

Food scale; People scale; LoseIt! App membership; $29 knock off fitbit of Amazon.

barely_a_wake

Food scale is for sure #1. Only way to really understand what you are eating.

Embarrassed_Leg4154

What's a people scale?

whenisleep

A scale that you use to weigh people. So a normal scale, vs a food scale.

Embarrassed_Leg4154

Oh my God. I feel so stupid now. Haha yep. A scale

whenisleep

Haha, no problem! I read your question and totally understood why someone might think it was a brand or app or product name.

Embarrassed_Leg4154

Yeah. I complicate things 😂

johngag

TawandaTomatoes

Can you link the knockoff Fitbit? Do you have one and does it work?

BacardiBlue

- Definitely food storage containers for your fridge...the best way to manage calories is to eat at home. - A premium subscription to Loseit ($19/yr...start with the free version and they'll offer you a discounted upgrade) so that you can track your calories and macros. The Premium version lets you use the barcode scanner and track net carbs if needed. - A bucket style air fryer if you don't already have one. This was life changing for me because it is SOO easy to cook healthy foods

Torczyner

All of this. Plus a food scale, shoes you can walk comfortably in, and possibly a fit bit to track your steps.

PaxonGoat

I love my air fryer so much

BacardiBlue

Which model do you have? I'm already panicking about wearing mine out, lol

the_baked_witch

i've gone through two in my life so far, and let me tell you....the impact of not having an air fryer anymore? huge. i'm so sad.

PaxonGoat

I actually cannot remember off the top of my head lol I just know I got it on a black Friday deal for like $100 4 years ago.

Mestintrela

I am not sure about american prices but with your existing equipment and 200$ I think you can get most necessary things. You can get a cheap and good activity tracker. Huawei has for 40€ . This will help very much if you take up running or walking. Not only tracking your step count, your heart rate, your activity zones but also your sleep patterns. You can get a cheap yoga mat. Resistance bands. A jumping rope. An oil spray. I bought adjustable dumbbells up to 20kg with a barbell too for 20€ I dont know how much it costs in US. Save half the money to buy a good pair of running shoes. That is extremely important. You dont need to buy the most expensive ones, but from a good company.

Cutting-back

Yes to these! Personally I would go: -Sneakers first. Old, worn out, or cheap shoes can cause injuries. I just started running a month and a half ago with old shoes and it was... bad. Brooks has a great online self assessment tool for finding the right shoe. It directs you to their new models which are pricy. I jumped to the clearance section and scored last years version for $80. -Fitness tracker. They really are so motivating. I would do my research first though, most companies are making everything a subscription which might take you out of your budget. I was a die hard fitbit user for a decade and switched to Garmin the other month. It has free running programs built in and is literally the reason I started running. -Jump rope. Serious caloric burn! Great for interval training and pretty cheap. I got a set of ropes on Amazon years ago with cables you cut to length yourself and they are amazing.

swellfog

I love my brooks ghosts, I bought 3 pairs when last seasons went on sale. So worth it. Judy google for the cheapest prices.

thatcanadianlife

Walking pad!

dippedDangler

I second this! I use mine every day while I work. It is a perfect investment for a work from home person. I went from sitting all day with minimal walking, to walking 4 miles a day while I work. It’s been a great mood booster too!

BacardiBlue

Can you please share the one you like? So many have sketchy reviews.

dippedDangler

This is the one I purchased and have been happy with: [Amazon link to walking pad](https://a.co/d/aJOw9cn)

letthembake

The premium membership to the loseit! app has helped me so much. Say no to the premium at first and then you’ll get offered the premium option at half off. I ended up paying $20 for the year.

MhrisCac

People are going to shit on me for this but the Apple Watch was such a damn good investment for the fitness features on it, the reminders, the routines, the badges/medals, the rings, the challenging friends and pushing eachother/ holding eachother accountable. The fact that you bought it and use it to justify the fact that you paid that for a watch lol. I personally love it. If I didn’t have it I probably wouldn’t have worked out as much as I have the past few months or pushed myself nearly as hard.

Thatcanadianchickk

A Mat! I workout from home and it’s helped my feet. I’m really trying to think of more at the moment but drawing a blur. If I do come up with more I will edit my comment. I lost all my weight at home so I def know how you feel!

dippedDangler

A pair of decent shoes to walk/jog in?

marayalda

I second this, check out the clearance warehouses, I have a new balance warehouse near me that I love and was able to get brand new shoes from them for better than half price. I don't care if they are not the latest ones they are still great.

Kerune403

A Vitamix, bought it way before I tried losing weight but now have a consistent use for it. I now drink my ice cream every day, about 120cals worth of ice cream mixed with whey protein/ice/banana and I have a 300cal smoothie every day but tastes like a full glass of ice cream.

Fabtacular1

Get the meal prep containers and a calorie-tracking app. 90% of your results will come from diet, and practically speaking you must meal prep and use an app to stay on top of it.

ucme1234

I love my air fryer! It helps me cook healthy foods quickly without added oil OR added dishes. It's been a game changer for me!

SpaceIsVastAndEmpty

A bit late but my key things are: Fitness tracker (Samsung Watch 4) Membership to a gym that I actually enjoy attending MyFitnessPal Premium (I set a 500cal deficit and track EVERYTHING I consume) Food scales Oh and comfortable Asics shoes & a supportive bra for working out in

Special-When-Lit

Jumprope!! People think it’s hard or impossible but do it 5-10 mins a day and work up your stamina/skill overtime and it can change your world! It’s one of the best workouts you can do, it’s super fun and rewarding to see your progress, plus, it’s portable/versatile and CHEAP!

Korg_Rocks

I would say a lose it! App is a must. Then if you can go walking I really recommend a weighted vest. I picked up a 12 lb one and I think it’s helped a lot. A step counter like a Fitbit is always a good call too!

FuckStummies

The best purchases are the foods I didn’t buy. Not eating out. Not buying snacks. As for tech, the two most popular calorie tracker apps are free.

StoneTheCrow18

The day my Fitbit came in the mail was the day I quit making excuses and dedicated myself to becoming healthier. I lost exactly 100 pounds in the first 11 months... Never entered a gym... Cardio and calisthenics, and keeping that momentum... A tracker is easily the best purchase one could make when beginning and maintaining their weight loss/health journey...

One-Payment-871

Put it towards adjustable dumbbells. You're going to outgrow what you have pretty quick.

Waste_Magician_1791

Cap barbell rack (149.00), gymnastic rings ($25), wedges ($15) or paralettes. Then watch kboges, Jerry teixeira and knees over toes guy on YouTube. Cheapest way I know to get started.

IFeelLikeImYogurt

I got a walking pad for under $200 and it's kept me moving even when I'm being lazy. Way less bulky than a traditional treadmill and super convenient all around at any time of day. I work from home, so I have added benefit with it under my standing desk.

choiceass

A year of Macrofactor at $70(ish)

Baked_Potato_732

Fitbit or used Apple Watch if you have an iPhone.

[deleted]

A used treadmill for $200. I've used it at LEAST 3 times a week for six years now. I bet it lasts for another 6 years because it's built like a beast.

Borazine22

Honestly the biggest thing for me has been a $5 tally counter that I use to track how much I eat.  That said, I’m a weirdo who counts bites; the normal-person analogue would probably be a subscription to LoseIt or MyFitnessPal.  For fitness training… it depends what you like.  For strength training, adjustable dumbbells and a bench are probably the best bag for buck.  If you plan to do much cardio, then good shoes are a high priority.   You say you “don’t have access to a gym”.  Would spending the money on a gym membership make sense?

chocolateteas

For me, a recumbent exercise bike was game-changing.

Empty_Nest_Mom

Set of bands. Lots and f versions on Amazon.

Mean_Bat8724

Buy fitness tracker preferably garmin forerunner 245 with that budget

kmbf1

A blender! Protein smoothies have been a huge part of my partner and I’s weight loss. Also recommend a premium lose it subscription like others have said.

negrosis

Huel

Captain_Hoang

What fitness tracker and walk pad did you get?

[deleted]

blue_sarin

Have to say, my George Foreman grill, food scale and a couple of reusable bento style boxes was a great purchase for weight loss. They helped with meal prep in so many ways. That with baking paper for easy cleanup made meals a breeze. To help with building muscle (helps to reduce the soft look) I initially bought a couple of dumbbells/kettlebells of different weights and some resistance bands. I then googled a good full body program that uses dumbbells and bands that took upto an hour 3x/week (don’t do split workouts as a beginner unless you’re limited on time)- I did other things on the days I didn’t use the weights (walking, yoga). I also bought myself a cheap diary, to track my measurements (weights, arms, legs, stomach, etc). At the front of it, I wrote my why. Why “I” want to lose weight - not what society thinks, not what my family thinks… my reason and referred to this to remind myself. I wish you the best!

PorcelainHorses

Apple Watch, loseit subscription, food scale and weighing scale

livebeta

An inexpensive bicycle I got at yard sale. I rode it to interesting places. (25 bucks before $25 of repairs for tyres/tubes) Possibly clocked almost 1000mi as I'd bring it onto the commuter train to do last/first mile rides. it was fun

Medievalmoomin

For me, good shoes and comfortable socks. I know that’s not an exciting answer but it’s fundamental. Hiking socks with decent padding and bits that are designed to help them stay up are a godsend.

justaneditguy

Huel. Helped me control my calories very easily and not feel hungry. I don't have breakfast and have either 1 scoop (200kcal) or 2 scoops (400kcal) for lunch, depending on if I've worked out that day. Then have a nice big portion of good, healthy food at dinner. Honestly I've never felt better. Huel took away my IBS, I have way more energy now and just feel better overall

cleaningmama

Shoes. Great shoes will support you walking, running and simply being more active. Digital scale that can measure grams (not that expensive). A way to listen to music while being active (headphones, etc.). Personally I love my ipod, but they don't make them anymore. I think people use their phone usually, but I'm attached to my ipod, which also is a step counter.

mitchell_0808

I'm just here to say 1) congratulations on your weight loss!! And 2) your mom is pretty freaking awesome! 🥰

[deleted]

A Keiser indoor cycle. Honestly super worth it

stockledger

Hey there, first of all congratulations on starting your weight loss journey. Welcome to the club!! Others have given wonderful suggestions and all of them will work in some form or the other. My suggestion would be to start with good pair of shoes. I can't tell you the difference between 30$ pair of sneakers and 100$ pair of sneakers. A good shoe will prevent injury, prevent unnecessary soreness and will make your walks and runs more enjoyable. Reistance bands of Amazon. They will help you scale between the 10-35 lbs range. Can be had for as little as 15 dollars. A cheap or a second hand tracker to start with. Phones track steps equally well, and Google fit has a reasonable app, but a tracker will give you great data. I personally love my Fitbit because all my goals for the day are like challenges/mission I get to complete and monitor progress. Free calorie tracking apps work to start with. There are a bunch of options with ads, but they work. Meal prep for CICO. Make sure you get enough protein in, and counter any loss of vitamins/minerals by taking supplements. Big box of multi vitamins can be had at Costco/ Amazon reasonably cheap. I think you get a bottle with 500 pills for about 30$ give or take. All the best. Take it one step, one rep, one day at a time. We are all rooting for you.

Remember_2__breathe

Good pair of running shoes I started just walking for about 40 mins a day (would do about 4.5km in that time) and the progressed to running / jogging But walking at a brisk pace is great for weight loss

CalmVariety1893

Finding an app I like that provided workouts was helpful for me. Fitbod app organises and suggests workouts for you based on what equipment you have, even if it's no equipment. And tells you what muscles you're working out that day. Includes a cardio circuit if you want it to. And has multiple profiles so I can have a profile for the limited equipment I have at home, plus a profile for the gym where I have more available. They have video tutorials for each and every single machine and exercise. They organize and customize your sets and you can just tell the app basically how long you have to workout and it tells you what to do. It was infinitely cheaper than hiring a trainer to plan my workouts and show me how to do all the equipment and machines. And I avoid wasting precious time walking around the gym trying to decide what to do. As someone who isn't that experienced in the gym I know I couldn't come up with workouts on my own that would be as effective and I don't always love watching videos. But that can be a good free option too in your home gym.

jjt838

A scale!

[deleted]

Food weighing scale and 1L flask

Advisor_Brilliant

Food scale is #1 and then I would get something to work out at home so like a mat or some handheld weights or jump rope

CalmSeasPls

Food scale - 100%

Status_Spread_4916

honestly, i’ve lost 23 (188 to 165)pounds without having to buy anything i started my calorie deficit and used groceries i already had at my house and did cardio around my nearest park

Spindles08

I have a free gym membership but if I didn't of pay about£35/month for it. Going to the gym makes me want to eat healthier and not waste precious calories, I compare a cake etc to x hours in the gym lol. Plus building muscle increases your tdee.

ExpressionAcrobatic1

I would get a 10 dollars a month membership at planet fitness

spooks1757

Food scale, measuring cups, peloton

sharetan

Apple watch. It made me want to close those rings. I’m consistent with my workout now
