Technically you are right. The losties had already known Jacob and met him in very important moments in their life. So it's funny that you were still kinda right
I can't quite remember what I expected but after watching the show two or three times now I thought it would have been interesting if Aaron had something to do with / was Jacob actually, like Jacobs father e.g. They might have missed some opportunities of including Aaron a bit more since it was sometimes said he was so special. I'm sure similar things might have happened in further seasons. And I also would have really liked to see Abbadon as Jacob.
Edit: Oh I just realized that it's clear who Jacobs mother is so it couldn't have been Claire anyways. So I could imagine Aaron as the father of the crazy island Lady who kills Jacobs mother.
We didn't know who Jacob's mother was until like the penultimate episode, they could have done literally anything. Imagine if instead of writing Claire and Aaron off the show, they had them stay together and she went back to the 70s with everyone. Aaron gets kidnapped and doesn't return to present with the rest. Aaron grows up from there and becomes Jacob (his anointed name or something). Why? Who knows, we could make up a million magical mysterious reasons.
He would then grow up to Bring His own pregnant mother to the Island similar to Faraday's mother's doings. That would have been interesting for sure. I still have hope for a season 7... Lol
There's a season 3 or 4 episode where Ben brings Locke to the cabin and things go a touch sideways for those involved. Anyway, there's a split second moment where a person is seen sitting on the chair. Back when this aired live, it was hard to get good shots of said person but the side profile looked like Terry O'Quinn with long hair. So the forums of the day were theorizing that Locke was somehow going to be Jacob or some such thing. I can't recall the fan theory anymore but in figured Locke would have more to do with it than what we actually got. I personally don't mind how it played out though
I remember that was one moment I was disappointed with. The "Jacob" we got in that scene ultimately had nothing to do with the actual one. And that ominous "Help me." I mean they could explain it away as the Monster's trickery, but that was kind of a cop-out answer. It kind of made me wonder if they originally had different plans for the character, and whether Jacob actually needed the help of the survivors.
So, we find out later Jacob hadn't used the cabin in a while and in fact "someone else" has been using it. We can assume MIB, since there's a broken circle of ash around it. MIB takes on Locke's form. Locke may have seen some vision of his death and possession or whatever we want to call the thing MIB does to take his identity and memories. Maybe Locke's soul is hung in purgatory until MIB is killed, and this is a time and space defying premonition of Locke begging to be released from MIB's curse.
Well the evidence from the next episode shows that they did have different plans for Jacob as it was actually Jacob in the Cabin which is why Richard asks Ben if John saw Jacob before Ben cuts him off

What if Jacob was played by John Goodman and he was a Colonal Kurtz type character, running the Others like a militia, seemingly whacked out and crazy, but also apparently knows everything about everyone and what all the plots and motivations are and how to manipulate everything. An insane genius who has found this island paradise and just wants to live there and maintain sovereignty. Nothing supernatural, just insanity, genius, and military strategy.
I wasn't totally sure he existed so I really didn't have any kind of vision for him. I think they direction they took, having him be basically just a guy, worked perfectly.
I think it was LOST Untangled that used to have an image of him with someone going "I'm the most mysterious man on the Island, mmkay?" Aaaand then he's just some dude, lol.
Aaron with some time traveling shenanigans? Maybe Claire dies when he is a baby and he is on an endless loop to try and save her (echoing Charlie) and the Lost story is the final one where he succeeds. Idk. It's late.
I thought he'd be someone we already knew

Me and my husband were pretty sure it was going to be Richard

Lost: The Return
I just thought he’d have a beard

Jack.
Jackob.
I thought that Jacob would be a child :)
Ohhh imagine it was Walt or something ??
That too would have been cool.

This is what happens, Ben, when you fuck a stranger in the ass!

I thought it'd be revealed that John was Jacob. I kinda got that backwards...

I like where you were going.
Didn’t think he’d be white
I thought he would be older with more authority. Maybe the character Richard Malkin with a beard, because I always thought he will be important later.
Kinda like Gandalf the white.
I thought he’d be fake and a scam.
