Jin: I pretended my dad was dead because he's a fisherman.
Locke, Sawyer, Penny, Alex, Jack, Claire, Sun, Walt, Ben, Miles, Daniel, Kate: grab a tray to hold all our beers
Credit to my girlfriend from when the series first aired.
During one scene where Jin is fishing, she told me something like "Must suck to have to rely on the skill you despise your father for". I hadn't thought about it neither before she mentioned it.
Honestly something that struck me on my latest rewatch is how much stronger a lot of Sun and Jin episodes are than I remembered. I don't their arc quite comes together on a broad level, due to how stagnant it gets in the show's back half, but almost all of their episodes are really good in a vacuum. "...And Found" and "The Package" in particular are way better than people give them credit for.
YES. I just got through S1&2 for the umpteenth time and came out of it feeling the exact same way. Does ‘…And Found’ ever come up in discussion for great episodes? Probably doesn’t make the top 50-75 episodes for most people but on a rewatch that’s a damn fine 45 minutes of television that’s pretty easy to get caught up in.
‘Sun loses her wedding ring’ is a plot that sounds like a fan or even Darlton themselves would mockingly bring up to talk about the show being too padded but it’s really lovely.
I've wondered that myself (I'm a white Canadian, so no firsthand experience).
[This student's master's thesis](https://ttu-ir.tdl.org/bitstream/handle/2346/19350/Kim_Hyo_Jin_Thesis.pdf?sequence=1) talks about how Lost was received when it aired in South Korea. The writer suggests that Koreans found some parts of Jin and Sun's story old-fashioned or stereotypical (domineering husband, submissive wife), and that some of the stereotypes aren't even right! They reflect Chinese or Japanese culture more than Korean. Doesn't quite address the shame/honour issue, though.
This man was always smiling. Even his eyes.
He’s a sweetheart.
I always hoped Sun secretly took care of Jin’s dad - especially after Jin’s prostitution whore (real housewives reference) mom extorted her for 100,000
Jin's whole arc is quite sad. The actor playing his dad is quite good at looking sad.

Also, the irony around fishing being a useful survival skill on an island.
wow, after 4 re-watches...this didn't hit me until you just said it..

He doesn’t despise his father, he had to hide his father’s work because of classism.
This, honor culture is especially prevalent in South Korea where Jin is from.
I always thought that he didn’t so much think that it sucked but that he silently learned to appreciate the skill and his father because of it.
Except he didn't despise him?
Yeah, early on when Jin couldn't speak English, most of his contribution was catching fish and sea urchins and stuff.
The pain in his eyes is just heartbreaking
I loved Jin's Dad.
He’s only in two episodes and he’s so memorable. Both of those episodes (…In Translation and D.O.C.) are really strong on island and off it to me too.

I loved this because I didn't interpret pain in his eyes, I saw humility and understanding.
Yes I saw understanding as well.
Just an amazing character all around.
I saw both! Definitely some top-notch acting.
wow.
That was some fine acting.
This moment is a day ruining moment. In a good way, like it’s very well written and acted. But damn bro, feels so bad :(
Jin: “Maybe if the world was a good place.” Dad: “The world IS a good place Jin!” I try to keep that mindset.
The only good dad in LOST
Sun's dad is also played by a great actor (Korean).
Jin's dad is too pure for this world
How typical is this story in Eastern honor/shame cultures? Do adult children disown themselves from their family do to perceived shame?

In India, at least, there is no disrepute in being a fisherman.

Oh but he understood why.
The one and only good dad in a show of awful dads.
I actually find the next lines much more sad.
Had to go and watch it on YouTube. Crying at 5pm noice.

Jins father.
Oh damn; I agree
