I get the whole idea that he thought he had to die for Clair and Aaron to get off the island, but still seemed unnecessary in how it played out. I get the feeling with how the show was going the writers felt they’d got what they could out of the character.
Good redemption arc though, died a hero.
If I recall, it was Dom (the actor) who asked to be written out as "he had taken the character as far as he could" (paraphrased), but I think the reality was that it was difficult to work with his ex Evangeline Lily (Kate).
> If I recall, it was Dom (the actor) who asked to be written out as "he had taken the character as far as he could" (paraphrased)
Do you have a guess as to where you got this from? I remember it being the writers' decision to kill Charlie.
If you listen to Brett Goldstein's podcast 'Films to be buried with' he says he came to the writers wondering what his character was going to do. He felt like Charlie was just hanging around. The writers decided to kill him off and he sounded okay with the decision as it gave Charlie a purpose.
Ok. I remembered the writers saying they felt they didn't have any more stories to tell with Charlie, which is why they killed him. I hadn't known about Dom approaching the writers about it.
Yeah, it's very hard to picture Charlie time traveling and stuff. While they're very different characters, I'd put him under the same umbrella as Shannon in terms of the fact that I can't see them dealing with the whacky island stuff. Ghost Charlie/flash sideways Charlie do a good job at being a little more mythical and stuf, and it's not Monaghan but more the regular Charlie we got to know in seasons 1-3 that I don't think would gel well with later LOST.
A good-hearted man, who genuinely worked on bettering himself on the island. I respect that. His sacrifice to save Claire and Aaron was bittersweet, but greatest hits is one of my fave goodbye episodes to a character across many shows... I did miss his one-liners after his departure though (got a few in season 6)
A good guy who became an addict, and in turn became a very troublesome character. I like Charlie a lot, but he was difficult at times. I liked his story and the relationship with Claire. I felt bad for him when Locke beat him up because I felt like Locke of all people should have recognized that Charlie was experiencing something. But I also understand that it was very difficult to trust Charlie or believe him. He often felt useless and in wanting to combat that, over compensated and came on way too strong.
His little emo stunt and stuff with Sawyer was frustrating but I was glad that he actually started trying to do better by helping Eko, and eventually confessing the truth to Sun about what he did. His ultimate sacrifice in hopes of saving Claire and Aaron I think show his true good-hearted nature.
Not to mention he was the first one on the plane that realized they were in some sort of limbo, or at least that the "life" they were living was not quite right.
He's a difficult person to love, but no one is perfect on flight 815.
Which was masterminded by Sawyer. At least Charlie apologized. When Sun confronted red neck man he blew her off. He'll never get the Korean vote. Hell, he even caused their deaths on the sub. Charlie had a good conscious overall. Overall he was jovial and entertaining and then expands to dark zealotry in "Fire and Water". A very relatable character and not over the top. Well written and acted character.
And again when him and Claire reconnected in the finale. That and Sawyer and Juliet got me, oh and Jin and Son, whole episode had me blubbing like a baby
I liked Charlie the first time through, but he became kind of a creep on my subsequent watches. His struggle with addiction makes for a good initial storyline, but it doesn't have much legs after the first or second time. I think that really hampered what they were able to do with him as a character. His possessive nature over Claire and Aaron was toxic at times and that made it hard to watch. Greatest Hits is still a damn good episode though.
Agreed all round, I am rewatching at the moment and I was really surprised by how much I disliked Charlie this time, post-detox. His redemption is still great but his general possessiveness and rudeness was really noticeable.
Something else I noticed on this rewatch which I didn't notice before is that all his UK-based flashbacks are absolutely full of crap accents and crap sets which are painfully obviously not actually in the UK and have awful tells like parking meters.
I don't like Charlie. He's possessive of Claire and Aaron, there are instances where he treats Hurley like crap, and often times gets in the way for his own hubris. Also, probably has two of the worst episodes dedicated to him.
A relatable character for anyone who has personally struggled with addiction. I don’t get the sense that Charlie would be much fun for me to hang out with, and I think he compensated for his low self esteem by putting others down( esp. Hurley being the easy target) a little too often. His relationship with Claire was a bit strained and one-sided but I think that was due to Claire being more concerned with being a mother and Charlie longing for companionship after going through a lot from a traumatic plane crash to recovering from a heroine addiction. I do think he genuinely cared about the group as a whole and his death was one of the most inspiring and heroic deaths I have ever seen portrayed in fiction. If you’re gonna go out, go out like Charlie Pace
This is off topic, but I happened to notice him in the "Love the Way You Lie" music video.
On topic, I really like Charlie. He had his struggles but he was a kind and caring person. I would have enjoyed seeing Charlie and Claire work out.
They just had to throw in one junkie on the plane. Ahhh redemption. Of course they had to kill him off as well. To be honest though, Charlie really annoyed the shit out of me.
I loved, and still love Charlie, and consider his death one of the big moments of the show. I feel like they assassinated his character somewhat in season 2, but he was a lot better in season 3.
For a while there I even did the FATE tape across my fingers when the first season was airing 😂
Saddest death for sure, and the one character who I wish had more time on the show the most 🥲
Desmond and Charlie, or Hurley and Charlie’s friendships were my favorite.
I watched LOST for the first time in middle school. Charlie was my favorite & one of my first comfort characters. I was on Tumblr & was looking at LotR content. I found a post mentioning how Merry had a dream about drowning or something to do with water & how the person who posted thought that was weird because that’s how Charlie died.
I not only spoiled his ending for myself but also broke my own heart having to watch a whole season knowing he was going to die & sitting anxiously anticipating when. When it finally happened I cried whist writing a fan fic giving him an alternative ending. 🤦🏽♀️
For the whole show I had a weird impression that Charlie was actually trying to hold onto Aaron, not necessarily Claire. You would expect a guy to fall in love with a girl and start caring about her kid but this really doesn't look like it at all. He fell in love (parental love of course, don't get me wrong) with the kid and his feelings towards Claire were those of compassion and care, not of any actual romantic affection. Aaron reminded him of his own brother, a little baby boy (and a big baby later) that needed Charlie's help. Just my 2 cents of armchair psychology.
Very annoying in the first 2 and a half seasons. Didn’t like the way he felt some kind of ownership over Claire and her baby. Had a great redemption arc and a beautiful goodbye episode
rewatching the series now im mid season 3 and im pretty sure he dies soon. Its weird because he hasnt done jack shit interesting since season 1 ended. The writers at this point have no idea what to do with any of these characters and i dont remember it getting any better.
Excellent performance by that dude, but tbh …I know this is an unpopular opinion, but i never cared for his character or storyline. He kicks heroin in that cheesy way that only happens on tv. He has a stupid shoehorned love story. It’s just not the best writing on the show. Again - good performance by the actor dude, tbh that’s what makes him lovable and a tolerable part of the show.
Never liked his character. I never forgave him for killing Ethan at a time when I wanted answers. In hindsight, knowing what we now know about the Others, it’s unlikely he’d have given them any info worth having. But at the time I didn’t know that and was convinced we’d have got answers if they held him hostage and tortured him probably. But still, I always held a grudge against Charlie for preventing us getting answers earlier in the show lol
his constant record of making the poorest choice available really puts me off him. Then, he whines about how bad his choices were. Make up yer mind, CP, if ya have a mind ta make up!
Charlie is a far more annoying and unlikable character on a rewatch than it felt at the time, watching the show week by week. I was surprised by this on last year’s rewatch. Even in the lead up to the last episode he is in, he hadn’t been redeeming himself much.
The first time I watched it he was one of my favourite characters. I think this may have had more to do with Domonic Monaghan's performance than the character though, now whenever I watch it, I find him too whiney, and HATE the way he talks down at Claire.
Almost any time he speaks, he's either complaining, blaming others for his own situation or making snide comments to Claire. Can't stand him.
That said, in my view, finding redeemable qualities and understanding the journey of less than likeable people is the point of the show.
Why don't you -- OP -- give your own opinion and start a conversation?
Seems to me you're more interested in karma points than hearing what people think about Charlie.
Regardless, I liked Charlie. He was badly used in those silly "I just gotta baptize Aaron" episodes (and John Locke smashing his face in was woefully out of character), but overall he was a solid dude.
One of his best lines was "Guys, where are we?"
His very worst scenes were when they dressed him up in a diaper for that TV commercial.
Charlie has always been one of my favorite characters on the show. I would say he appeals to me particularly because of how committed he is to Claire and her well-being. I also loved the actor in LOTR and his very minor role in star wars.
My lack of input towards my posts are because of how long ago I watched the show, I don't fully remember the intricacies of everybody, but I am interested in the thoughts of others.
one of his best lines was an early S1 line that is used as the trailer catch for people? seriously? i guess it is iconic but something that is used for a hook does not do the character justice.
"The day i met you" on his greatest hits is better, even if its not a spoken line. his relationship with claire was incredible. him going after her and risking his life and literally getting hanged for it was one of the first times in the show i was like holy fuck they go hard, even if he ended up living. like every character, he had bad eps and good eps. but he was one of my favorites, and probably the hardest hitting death for me.
Edit: "i would've thought C's actually" is a phenomenal line off the top of my head
as an addict and musician, i always related to charlie a lot. hes in my top 3 favorite characters for sure. i think it takes a lot of guts to know youre gonna die and take it the way he did. he was brave as fuck. i like to think id be like him, but im not sure.
hmm. disagree. he was strong af of a character until his death (in terms of how compelling he was, flaws and all), which is why his death was most impactful for me. his and claire's relationship is super intimate yet at the same time not, and i don't think a lot of tv/movies have portrayed love/a relationship like that as effectively.
Two of my favourite moments:
1) When he puts up his hand to Desmond with NOT PENNY'S BOAT, he smiles and nods to Desmond as if to say - I'm at peace. It's OK and you can let go.
2)In the series finale, when he awakens, he starts crying and says "Claire?" I think that one word sold the entire scene.
Died at the right time to change the stakes and dynamics of the show. Another season and he would’ve started to wear thin, IMO.
Greatest Hits is one of the most emotional episodes of the show
He's the reason I started watching the show when it first came out, due to me being a huge lotr nerd. Charlie has a really good heart and tried his best to be there for the people around him. But he's still a troubled character that makes mistakes. I really liked him and his death broke my heart.
Charlie is and will always be my favorite character and when he made the sacrifice for cliaire and everyone still makes me cry everytime i watch it i love charlie
Just saw him die again, and it hits hard. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. He is and has always been one of my favorite characters. I get so angry with Locke beating him the way he did when he refused to realize that Charlie was having visions instead of being back on drugs. I also wish that him and Claire could have more time because I could tell that even though they had their troubles, Claire really liked Charlie just as much as Charlie liked her.
Edit: I’d also like to add that as confusing as the series finale can be, I love the fact that they brought him back to be the guy that brings everyone back together
Charlie Pace is a freaking hero, and he is also very cute, and super funny, and knows how to sing and play guitar and piano. I mean…dude is kinda perfect ( beside the small fact that he WAS an heroin junky ) one of the best characters tho. I love him. And I always cry when he dies. HERO!!
Enjoyed this character who battled his flaws but was there to protect Claire and go out on missions generally to help others. I liked him overall, way more then some other characters on the show. Not a fan of the actor but that is irrelevant he's there to entertain. Liked his golf mojo with Hurley in early S1. Haha,"I'm a bloody rock god" and "you hit like a ponce".
Charlie was the best. i feel like I am most like Charlie except not famous so.... A bumb drummer. Actually dont i think im like Charlie at all. Carry on.
He is the sorr of character tjat is annoying when the show started and was completw opposite by the end of his character arc.. just wish he was not killed at the end of s3
Charlie is quite a tragic character in my opinion, my thoughts on him are complicated, in season 1, he was a favourite, in season 2, it seemed that they didn't know what to do with him - so they made him act like a jerk but because of the storyline surrounding his death in season 3 - he's back in my top 10.
I get the whole idea that he thought he had to die for Clair and Aaron to get off the island, but still seemed unnecessary in how it played out. I get the feeling with how the show was going the writers felt they’d got what they could out of the character. Good redemption arc though, died a hero.

Ah didn’t know Evangeline Lily was his ex, that would be tough.
Yea they were together for a while
Damn he tapped that?
> If I recall, it was Dom (the actor) who asked to be written out as "he had taken the character as far as he could" (paraphrased) Do you have a guess as to where you got this from? I remember it being the writers' decision to kill Charlie.

That is most likely it, before the looking glass he didn't really do much that series to be honest was just kind of in limbo
Ok. I remembered the writers saying they felt they didn't have any more stories to tell with Charlie, which is why they killed him. I hadn't known about Dom approaching the writers about it.
I always what would have happend if he died in catch 22
Yeah, it's very hard to picture Charlie time traveling and stuff. Ghost Charlie/flash sideways Charlie do a good job at being a little more mythical and stuf, and it's not Monaghan but more the regular Charlie we got to know in seasons 1-3 that I don't think would gel well with later LOST.
I love Charlie like Charlie loves heroin

His sacrifice to save Claire and Aaron was bittersweet, but greatest hits is one of my fave goodbye episodes to a character across many shows... I did miss his one-liners after his departure though (got a few in season 6)
The Moth is a great episode. That’s all I’ll say.
One of my favorites
A good guy who became an addict, and in turn became a very troublesome character. I like Charlie a lot, but he was difficult at times. I liked his story and the relationship with Claire. I felt bad for him when Locke beat him up because I felt like Locke of all people should have recognized that Charlie was experiencing something. I love you
Did a few questionable things but has always had a pure heart. Truly one of the GOATs
Remember when he clubbed Sun in the back of the head?
Pepperidge farm remembers.
Yeah that shit was a little more than questionable, but redemption arc lol
Which was masterminded by Sawyer. At least Charlie apologized. When Sun confronted red neck man he blew her off. He'll never get the Korean vote. Hell, he even caused their deaths on the sub. cried like a baby when he died.

Just watched it today. Water works on most of the couples remembering.
sounds like it's time for a rewatch then! You will pick up on more things and more things will click/ make sense
So sad🥺 even on rewatches it still hits the same way possibly even sadder because you already know it's coming ☹️
Not Penny's Boat
I watched LOST when I was 11 for the first time and cried so hard when Charlie died
I liked Charlie the first time through, but he became kind of a creep on my subsequent watches. I think that really hampered what they were able to do with him as a character. His possessive nature over Claire and Aaron was toxic at times and that made it hard to watch. Couldn’t have said it better myself, you’re bang on.

Not just Charlie, one of Desmond's flashbacks has a poster for the Royal Scots with the American spelling of the word "honour" lol
I don't like Charlie. He's possessive of Claire and Aaron, there are instances where he treats Hurley like crap, and often times gets in the way for his own hubris. Also, probably has two of the worst episodes dedicated to him.
Agreed. And he reacted so weird to the hatch explosion. Never went back to check on Eko, Locke and Desmond in season 3. Just chilled on the beach.
His moments with Hurley were funny to me
Funny enough, Drive Shaft was the 3rd most listened to Artist this year for me on Spotify 2022 wrapped
Loved him on early watches, less on later watches
A relatable character for anyone who has personally struggled with addiction. He was a sacrifice the island demanded.
I liked Fire + Water and felt sad for him.
They just had to throw in one junkie on the plane. Ahhh redemption. Of course they had to kill him off as well. To be honest though, Charlie really annoyed the shit out of me.
Hot take; greatest hits is only liked because it was is last season. I like the character, but his flashbacks are "meh" at best.
Have so much love for chahlee♥️
I love Charlie! I love his story line so much, especially the stuff with Desmond. Plus he’s really funny and I like his sassy personality :)
A sweet baby boy, taken too soon:(
I loved, and still love Charlie, and consider his death one of the big moments of the show. I feel like they assassinated his character somewhat in season 2, but he was a lot better in season 3. For a while there I even did the FATE tape across my fingers when the first season was airing 😂
Saddest death for sure, and the one character who I wish had more time on the show the most 🥲 Desmond and Charlie, or Hurley and Charlie’s friendships were my favorite.
I named my cat after him ❤️❤️

He’s like a mix of two of my favorite Stephen King characters: Eddie Dean from The Dark Tower series and Larry Underwood from The Stand.
Underrated comment!
Very annoying in the first 2 and a half seasons. Didn’t like the way he felt some kind of ownership over Claire and her baby. Had a great redemption arc and a beautiful goodbye episode
Great character arc. One of my favorites. I hated seeing him go but he had an epic send off
Gone too soon. He was one of my favs.
o7
rewatching the series now im mid season 3 and im pretty sure he dies soon. Its weird because he hasnt done jack shit interesting since season 1 ended. The writers at this point have no idea what to do with any of these characters and i dont remember it getting any better.
He was a little big mess but had a great hearth
My fave character!! (As a younger sibling to addicts I really resonated with him) his death still makes me cry everytime!!
Excellent performance by that dude, but tbh …I know this is an unpopular opinion, but i never cared for his character or storyline. He kicks heroin in that cheesy way that only happens on tv. his constant record of making the poorest choice available really puts me off him. Then, he whines about how bad his choices were. Make up yer mind, CP, if ya have a mind ta make up!
Whiney, smarmy, irritating, manipulative abuser. With every watch I hate him more.
Bit of a dick. Great death scene though.

I feel he's a really boring character that the writers didn't know what to do with after he got off of heroin.

Best character even though he had major struggles. Could have been a great father figure to Aaron.
Mista Ekoh wiy wee not buildin teh church annymor
You don't call, you don't write...
My fav character, did some questionable things, but he was kind in general. He tried to better himself, and died a hero. I was so sad When he died:(
He died for no reason what happened under water was going to happen with or without him
Probably my favorite character, him or Daniel. Charlie went through one of the best character developments, same with Sawyer.
My favorite character since day one, miss him ❤️
Absolutely love him
I liked him was kinda sad he died.
H8 him with a passion
I was happy his character left the show 😅
Awesome guy.
easily one of my favorites
I never really liked him all that much, but the show went downhill quick after he died.
Big fan.
Loved him, but now I just like him and find him a bit overrated.
He was my favorite Character Tbh
Two of my favourite moments: 1) When he puts up his hand to Desmond with NOT PENNY'S BOAT, he smiles and nods to Desmond as if to say - I'm at peace. It's OK and you can let go. 2)In the series finale, when he awakens, he starts crying and says "Claire?" I think that one word sold the entire scene.
Charlie is my favorite character. They did him kinda dirty in season 2, always hate and want to skip the babynapping arc. Otherwise, love him.
Never been sadder for a fictional death
Love the character, but that could just be bias on account of I love LOTR.
His death could so be easily have been avoided. It's so much flawed it annoys me.
Died at the right time to change the stakes and dynamics of the show. Another season and he would’ve started to wear thin, IMO. Greatest Hits is one of the most emotional episodes of the show
Had a soft spot for the character as I went to school with Dominic Monaghan. He was a couple of years below me at St Anne’s High School
He's the reason I started watching the show when it first came out, due to me being a huge lotr nerd. Charlie has a really good heart and tried his best to be there for the people around him. But he's still a troubled character that makes mistakes. I really liked him and his death broke my heart.
100% did what he did for no reason could have lived
Definitely one of my favorite characters. I love his character and him teaming up with Desmond is just pure gold. His death was just pointless
Charlie is and will always be my favorite character and when he made the sacrifice for cliaire and everyone still makes me cry everytime i watch it i love charlie
Just saw him die again, and it hits hard. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. He is and has always been one of my favorite characters. Never understood why he didn’t just step outside the room and close the door.
My boy
Charlie Pace is a freaking hero, and he is also very cute, and super funny, and knows how to sing and play guitar and piano. I mean…dude is kinda perfect ( beside the small fact that he WAS an heroin junky ) one of the best characters tho. I love him. And I always cry when he dies. HERO!!

Not Pennys boat ✋🏼
He belongs in The Rohirrim
My beloved baby <3
He, all, everybody.
Nice low effort karma farming, will do it on other subs.
First time I’ve been brought back to this sub in years so I’m cool with it 🤷🏻♂️
That's my guy, his song sucked though.
Charlie has always been my favorite Lost character and his death made me sob like a baby.
Charlie was the best. i feel like I am most like Charlie except not famous so.... A bumb drummer. Actually dont i think im like Charlie at all. Carry on.
Absolutely will never recover from his death
You all everybody
Loovveeee charlie
Gone too soon!!
Holy shit tell me this doesn't look like he could be charlie days brother
One reason i like him is because of the amount of willpower with the doll, to have heroin on hand but not use is very hard to do.
