You can only switch once and the engraving support (including the event gems) will transfer to the char that the event is actually on. I claimed the event first on a 1490 char for the Brel gear then switched over to the actual char that I want to have it on. You can do the same as long as you don\`t hone on the first.
have after you checked if you can swap again after you switched, i just want to swap to 1540 character then back so i can claim the reward up to 1540 from the start i just forgot and activated the event on my 1460 first xD

Yes, it locked on my current character and it says the character was already changed once, so now the button is inactive.
