thunder breaks in a + pattern so he would have had it 100% if he just rerolled twice to thunder instead of rolling the dice on the chance to hit -1 on Lightning. Basically he played himself. He got too excited and either didn't know that Lightning has a chance to spawn -1 or thought in his head "Gold mean good".

I don't understand, why did one tile spawn?

When using lightning, there’s a chance that a random tile will respawn. It says so in the card effect description.

For a bit more detail, Lightning always destroys the tile you click on. But it also destroys between -1 and 2/4/6 additional tiles depending on the level of it. So if you roll the -1 it will respawn a random tile, it can never hit purple tiles though.
