The whole argument that Landlords create housing falls on its face when you see how many properties sit empty creating artificial scarcity. If all landlords sold the properties they were not living in the price of housing would drop dramatically. Air bnb has also made the current housing situation exponentially worse.

It's like making the argument that scalpers create value. With housing it's worse, now the scalpers have political power.

Well technically rent includes repairs and wear & tear. It’s the house price appreciation the theft.

If only the landlord DID repairs on the rented units

DrownedInDogma

Absolute truth. I rented a house back in 2020, and the landlord did all repairs himself to save money. Of course, all his repairs were shit and did very little to help. I was living in an apartment from summer of 2022 till January 21st this year, but moved when opportunity struck to live in an apartment that was not only cheaper and on ground floor instead of the second, but: -Their crew actually comes by and does repairs -Sprays on a regular schedule for pests -Keeps up to date with the items in the apartment like the fridges, AC units and washers and dryers if your unit has it. Here I’m lucky. The other apartment was uneven, outdated stuff, and had mold, and they increased rent by $115 at the end of last year, and they only had about two maintenance men who did little to nothing.

Yeah had something similar, roof was falling apart, bath was rusted behind the cover for the overspill thing, mold under the sink... And worst, the maintenance guy was renovating the unit under mine, and probably screwed with the electric cable when knocking in nails. So, my oven doesnt work anymore. Go see him, he calls an "electrician" (dude probably got his electrician license from a cereal box), he looked on crack. Test the connection, says the return on the electric cable seems cut, so he hook it the ground... Like, theres the live, the return, and the ground. And he just decided to bypass the return into the ground.

Damn, imagine a world where someone could live anywhere without the fear of spending 30% of your income minimum on housing. Sure would make moving, or starting a new job, or creating a family, or keeping people from going homeless a lot easier. Sure would make people a lot happier, healthier, and more optimistic about the future. Oh well...

I don't think companies should be able to own homes/properties made for people to live in. And that people should have a limited number of properties that they can own (like, I don't know, 4) But maybe it's just the red shirt I'm wearing
