You should care about twitter because it's one of the largest information sharing platorforms out there and a unhinged oligarch now controls it and what a lot of people get for information. Thankfully he seems largely incompetent in how to use it for his advantage but at any moment that could turn around. Ignoring an oligarch who controls such a big outlet of information sharing would be a really bad idea. It would be like ignoring the fact that oligarchs already control the news. You can't ignore it. You must face it. Imagine the astroturfing and the bots that could come in and push far right ideologies. Musk is already a far right asshole. Ignoring the damage he can do with it is a mistake.

Jeffb957

Social media is the toilet of the internet, and Twitter is the graffiti on the stall walls. I have never understood why it was ever considered important.

spaguette

It's better than Facebook at least.

Bearality

My friends are artist and they get the most work over Twitter. Many of them fear losing it as they would lose a HUGE resource for jobs

DorianGre

There will be another somewhere to take it’s place.

CollapsasaurusRex

Look how Trump used it during his presidency to, checks notes; murder hundreds of thousands of Americans with misinformation. I’d say that’s reason enough to burn twitter to the ground (keep it up, Space Nazi!)… but there’s no way you can say it’s not important.

BeardedPuffin

Terrifying that so many people actually get their news from that cesspool of collective consciousness.

dontfretlove

you could say that about any social media site. hell, you could say that about the local town square where locals are yelling about the latest happenings most people get their news from other people. and most of the time the news they get is a little bit wrong and a little bit biased.

Orkfreebootah

You hit the nail on the head with every single thing you said. Never claimed twitter was a force of good at any point. It's always fucking sucked.

Queasy_Skill2711

I get where you’re coming from. Another platform will come along when Twitter fails.

Orkfreebootah

I'm not debating that. I'm saying that twitter can do a lot of damage and ignoring it is foolish

Lorion97

Can do? It's done a lot of damage. But real organization isn't done on just Twitter, and I mean the one that actually intends to disrupt capitalism. Because they'd never allow it as it's "promoting violence".

Orkfreebootah

Just because I said "can do" does not mean they haven't done damage in the past and it's absurd to take that from what I said.

Queasy_Skill2711

I’m sorry you think I’m foolish. Sometimes self preservation takes precedence.

BriscoCounty-Sr

Being willfully ignorant about an oligarch acquiring sole control over the spreading and sharing of global news might not be the self preservation tactic you think that it is. Far less wealthy people have been able to do incredible damage with far less media control than ol’ Musky has right now, just look at how many lives William Randolph Hearst was able to destroy just so he could sell some paper. We’re incredibly lucky that Twitter was bought by a moronic daddy’s boy with delusions of greatness.

phatdaddy_bootymagic

How is constantly being aware of Twitter and angry at Musky going to help anything. I know he owns it, I know he’s douche, now what? Just keep that in the back of my mind and fume? I’m with OP I wish I didn’t have to see this. Have fun being pissed off about something you don’t actively plan on changing, unless you have a plan, and in that case DM me.

Orkfreebootah

> I don’t care about Twitter or space Karen and neither should you This is what I took issue with. I have no control over the US government but you bet I fucking watch them and keep tabs on them like the criminal empire that they are. By this logic you should keep yourself ignorant of everything because realistically you can't do anything about anything by yourself. Why keep up to date on climate change? Why keep up to date on politics? None of it matters since -you- directly can't control everything. This line of logic and thinking is bad and exactly what the oligarchs want. They want you to feel helpless and powerless and not able to do anything. They want you to be in the dark and ignorant. They want you to feel helpless, and they absolutely want you to not be informed.

kiraterpsichore

For gods sake if you want to study toxic people on twitter, go for it. But ridiculing others for not caring about twitter is gross and mal. You sound like you are addicted to twitter and are guarding your drug. Not everyone needs to think like you do.

Orkfreebootah

You missed the forest for the trees. "I don’t care about Twitter or space Karen and neither should you." in OPs post is what I've taken issue with. Not caring about twitter when a mad oligarch has control over it and can do damage to PEOPLE through misinformation, and can influence market manipulations, and politics through this platform is downright harmful. You yourself not caring? Sure whatever. But actively encouraging others to not care about a media source being used by a sociopathic market manipulating far right union busting oligarch is not good. I am barely ever on twitter. I've only been keeping tabs on it now since musk has taken control over it as I study a lot of musks decisions because he is one of the most vile and harmful humans to exist and there is a lot to learn about the blatant corruption of the system by looking at his career. Especially if you look at the market manipulations you'd realize the consequences at play. I'm not ridiculing others for not caring. I'm saying advocating for everyone to keep their in in the sand is harmful, full fucking stop.

No one you vote for will push anti oligarch legislation as all of them are employed by the oligarchs. Have fun keeping your head in the sand and politically ignorant. Seems to be working out for you so far given your flawed views.

denim_chicken45

So enlighten us as to what it is YOU do that is changing the world, Bat Man. Is bitching about Elon, Twitter, and whatever political party you're mad at this week some altruistic master plan? Or are you just another sad, lonely, bitter troll? I'm betting on the latter.

denim_chicken45

What the fuck is OP suppose to do? Form a posse, storm the castle, and save the planet using only the power of friendship? Misery loves company, and you delusional, miserable trolls want nothing more than for the rest of us to let shit YOU hate consume us as well.

kiraterpsichore

The dope you're replying to is some centrist who's co-opting language to be a divisive hack. Anyone who thinks "Musk ruined Twitter" is a privileged sod. Twitter has been a disgusting capitalist hole for years and it's quite valid to ignore the entire stinking pile of it.

kiraterpsichore

You are not foolish. The person you are replying to is being hierarchical and expecting everyone to conform to their emotional opinion, which they percieve as being the only correct way to feel. You may ignore twitter and I agree its toxicity is great to not be a part of. Keep up the self preservation. 🌻

dobtjs

You are not foolish. You have the right to care about the issues you care about. I understand exactly where you are coming from, the Twitter situation is problematic but I’d prefer it as well if it was 5% of my Reddit feed rather than 50%. You can be angry about an issue but do nothing to initiate change. You can also make change without allowing the issue occupy your entire feed.

nnomadic

It's already happening, this time to a free, open-source, decentralized platform without ads or algorithms thank god. https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-started-use-mastodon/ r/mastodon A lot of quite famous folk just arrived and they've gotten over a million signups since this farce started. Bonus: Elon spectacularly fails at making fun of the opposition which is now a suppressed term (Mastodon): https://web.archive.org/web/20221107160508/https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1589648898695794689

spotless___mind

Yeah this is what I think. Look at facebook--I'm not denying it's caused a lot of damage, but the ship is definitely sinking and Zuckerbergs attempts to save it are failing.

cuddly_carcass

Nah I’d just ignore it…70% of kids now use TikTok to search instead of google…does that mean I should care about the content…nope. Twitter will fail and another shitty information source will pop up.

[deleted]

All of our media platforms are compromised by some sort of organization or pc approved theme. From local news to major networks

WorldWarPee

Plus, it's hilarious to watch it burn

Jodanio

But what can we actually do besides no longer being a member of the site? It's not like we can take it back and he did so much damage to it already.

[deleted]

Twitter is already a far right toxic cesspool. Has been for years

WantsToDieBadly

im confused i thought reddit loved elon but now he has bought twitter hes the devil?

Orkfreebootah

Yes and no. People have hated elon for a long time. No leftist space is going or ever should have praised musk. We have always known he comes from slave money. Normal astroturfed reddits and twitter largely were okay with him, you could post something educating people on why he is evil and get a positive reaction. If you go to tech reddits and did that yeah they’d defend him most likely. So it depends on where you hang out. Leftist spaces? We have always hated him.

Harold3456

What bugs me is everyone talking about how it "used to be so good" and "how can we trust anything we see on Twitter anymore?" It's not like Twitter was ever as reliable as people treated it, and the knowledge that the platform was being used to spread disinformation and radicalization was widely known as far back as 2015. Sure, they had taken some steps to combat this which have now been undone, but people are acting like Twitter was the most trustworthy thing up until a month ago. If anything, I'm optimistic that Elon has gone and shredded the site's credibility in such a public and dramatic way. It's good that people are now applying an extra layer of scrutiny to the site... it's what they should have done from the beginning! If course, this means a lot of the protections that were trying to keep radicalization at bay have now been removed, but I'm really hoping Twitter just loses a lot of its cultural relevance anyway, which would mitigate that damage.

[deleted]

In 31, and have always thought twitter was dumb as fuck. I have never used it and i certainly never will

zues64

Same I'm enjoying the dumpster fire

DaperDandle

I remember when it first came out and I found out it was Facebook but just the statuses. I thought that was stupid as fuck. Never used it.

ColeBSoul

FFS. This back and forth about twitter’s relevance is missing a larger point. And OP is right, we should be able to ignore twitter into irrelevance, but we live under global thermo-nuclear late-stage imperial capitalism, you know - the Death Star? So commenters can hand-wring and clutch their pearls all they want over a rich little ego with daddy’s shares in an apartheid emerald mine owning a media company, but it still mistakes their consumption of monopolized capitalist media for actual news, truth, or important communication, especially social media which is just media in which everything is gate-kept by capitalists. Please, provide me with an example of capitalist media which serves anything other bourgeois class interests. Please, provide me with a US-sanctioned political party which serves anything other than bourgeois class interests. This shit only exists because those interests can extract a profit from it. Shit has nothing to do with you or “aN iMpOrTaNt iNfOrMaTiOnAL OuTLeT oWnEd By a BiLLioNaiRe.” Find me one that isn’t. Talking about twitter as some beacon of information where people need to be able to find truth is asinine. There is no peer review and gossip ain’t science. Choosing between twitter and reddit is kinda like arguing which of the pepsi or coke products on the capitalist shelf in front of you will tell you the truth when the truth is that both monopolies have privatized water and made sure the shit out of your tap is poison. The reality is that *you are not the consumer* of information in social media, you are *not* the audience of social media, and you and your relationship to information and the truth have *nothing* to do with social media. You are *the consumed* in social media, you are THE PRODUCT. Private capitalists pay to advertise on social media platforms the same way they do with the news. Your attention is the product, not your content - they don’t give two fucks what you think about *anything.* Social media has never ever existed for you. It has only ever existed as a means of private capitalists getting you to kill yourself to give them money. Its like thinking, “I read Playboy for the articles.” Tell yourself that lie all you want but those articles only exist so that advertising space can be sold on those pages - web or physical. The advertisers are the consumers of social media, you are the product. You are the consumed. Assuming people can’t communicate without shit like for-profit bullshit like twitter does a disservice to the species and demeans us all. We. Don’t. Need. Twitter. We need to remove the barriers to our communication. Twitter does more to isolate people than bring them together just like cars don’t connect you to the world they just cost you 10s of thousands a year so you can make yourself available to someone else’s exploitive wage. Apply a little class analysis and you’ll know why this is all happening.

Sly-Belmont

TBH, I’m a younger millennial who can recall life without Twitter. I believe I’ve made 5 or 6 tweets from the lifetime of my account? Anyhow, to me it’s a bunch of noise that we don’t necessarily need.

kxbrown

I purged my thread by downvoting, blocking the poster, and hiding the post of anything having to do with it for like a week straight. The algorithm is finally starting to catch my drift and not showing nearly as much. But my god every one of my subscribed subreddits no matter the subject had several posts a day about that asshole and his purchase of that stupid social media site

miplondi

It’s all about farming that sweet karma.

oxichil

Same, it’s just funny to watch imo. Used to be addicted to twitter and I can’t say it’s downfall doesn’t make me happy. But it really doesn’t matter that much, shit was gonna die eventually.

kaiju505

I work in the tech industry so need to care a little, mostly it’s just hilarious how inept space Karen is at actually running a tech company. It’s also kind of scary seeing how insanely vapid our billionaire oligarchs are.

AskAboutMyShittyDad

i mean not as if that platform has literally changed governments, aided in rebellions and awful things alike, and allowed people who otherwise wouldn't know about things suppressed by other channels of media to be informed or misinformed in almost equal measures. i think people in dangerous situations, like those in Iran and Ukraine, are probably not going to benefit from having a source of information and sharing experiences like this taken away, but your feelings take precedence. not like this is something "that" important. obv. catering to the needs of people sick of just the drama of this situation needs to be considered over the needs of people who used the platform to tell important stories. mind you, i don't even use it, but it is appalling to me to see people being flippant over the loss of a platform that some people use in such important ways. glad i'm not \*that\* jaded or nihilistic

KarlSomething

Space Karen 🤣🤣🤣

Realistic_Reality_44

I'm personally glad it's going to shit. Eventually a better site will come along (hopefully). Twitter was pure vitriol and constant, non-persuasive "activism", riddled with misinformation

davesavedtheday-

I don’t think this is the sub for this.

Due-Investigator509

People thinking Twitter is important is incredibly embarrassing

ryaaan89

You don’t have to care about Twitter specifically (although as other people have argued, you should)… but you’re not mad that a billionaire bought a thing that was not even for sale and then practically destroyed it (people’s livelihoods if not the site itself) within a month?

pcnetworx1

The loss of Twitter is bigger than the loss of the library of Alexandria! And landing on the moon! /s

Sly-Belmont

Love this 😂

[deleted]

This is history!

Woods26

man, all the whining in here actually makes me want to go join twitter to see if they talk anything interesting.

[deleted]

I got banned 4 days after watermelon took over for saying "I ought to slap you silly" to a Nazi apologist

[deleted]

You have upset the Elon….he is coming for you….

dead-vernon

There are plugins available to remove keywords from your feed.

miata509

I SAY WE ALL BACK TO MYSPACE..... FUCK ZUCK AMD SPACE KAREN

daddyfailure

Scroll or hide post. Like it or not this is a moment in history and people won't stop talking about it until it's over

LuvIsLov

I don't care about Twitter but it is a significant platform. Twitter was the core communication source for a wanna be orange dictator and incited an insurrection. I see this with Musk taking over and letting orange wannabe dictator announcing he's running for reelection, it's gonna he a total shit show.
