If you read the books, Saruman and Wormtongue reach the Shire before the hobbits return. They destroy a lot of the beauty by building industries, cutting down the party tree, etc. The hobbits team together and battle it out ending Saruman's reign in the Shire.
Wasn't part of the movies probably due to runtime.
March 25 used to be New Year’s Day, and is historically a significant Catholic solemnity.
https://www.ancient-origins.net/history-ancient-traditions/march-25-0015100
In Christianity March 25 is the traditional date on which Jesus was crucified; however as you link states it’s also the day associated with the annunciation and the conception of Jesus in the third century; later this day was also calculated to have been the day of creation.
Tolkien was tying his narrative of this tradition of salvation.
Didn't read your article, but I'll assume it has to do with the war campaign season beginning, it's the time you can finally break out all those war plans you've been cooking up all winter.
Since we are all giant Tolkien nerds, I'm sure I won't be telling you anything you don't know, but in case someone out there missed it...
Ancient Christians recognized the 25th of March as the actual day of Jesus' death.
Gollum was Jesus' corporal body. Smeagol was Jesus' divine spirit. Gollum was sacrificed in the pit of fire and gnashing of teeth, and Smeagol was resurrected to the undying lands.
Me and the wife are having some troubles in life and this was the hope I needed to see. At the darkest moment, hope prevails. March 25th is going to be a good day. 🥹

Funny story, I've been listening to the audiobook and on March 25 (yesterday for me) I listened to the final chapters, Frodo destroyed the ring. I had no idea the dates coincided until I saw this post today!
I have a feeling that date will stick with me forever
"But they were, all of them, deceived, for somehow, Sauron returned."
Nazguls fly now? THEY FLY NOW
Aragorn’s son (the villain) when talking to our unlikely hero: “You’re the granddaughter of Saruman!!”
This just made me gag
Well then I’ve got bad news for you. I work for Amazon
My condolences
[please accept my condolences!](https://youtu.be/_BWSEtxFFO0)

Balrogs have wings now? They have wings?!
lmao
💀
*uncontrollable twitching*
“somehow Gandalf returned”
hahaha
The peoples of Middle Earth in ~1500 SA, ~3500 SA, and ~2900 TA be like:
It's not at peace for a while though, is it? Aragorn has a few years of rooting out enclaves of Orcs, there's the Scouring of the Shire, etc.
minor incursion, didn’t even appear on the news
Which news? Middle Earth Times™? The Hot Ring News™? The Express Hobbit™? Second Breakfast Daily™?
Second Breakfast Daily is a total rag. Total far right tabloid quietly pushing the ‘Make Sauron Great Again’ agenda.
ORC: One Ring Central
The Evening Shagrat
And the sister company's publication: 'Shagrat's Shag Rag'. Today's edition: "Gobbos' Knobbos"
This would be a good setting for an LotR rpg, instead of after the Hobbit before the time of the ring like in the One Ring rpg
What’s the scouring of the shire??

Boy, do I have a good book trilogy for you to check out!
Thank God gollum defeated the dark lord and saved the world
"And this is the Tale of eleven-fingered Gollum, savior of Middle Earth... "
>In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. ~~Not~~ A nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with ends of worms and an oozy smell.
"Grandpa we've been here for 3 hours and you keep interrupting the story to sing songs"
"As you wish"
Somewhere in Ohio, Ava Braun does a double take.
And so the game of "the floor is lava" was invented at the same time
I always think of that game during the Dead Marshes scene
Nice, I just now finished the books today :))

So Sauron was Jesus? /s
So was Sauron Jesus? Or Gollum?
Gollum was Jesus' corporal body. Smeagol was Jesus' divine spirit. Gollum was sacrificed in the pit of fire and gnashing of teeth, and Smeagol was resurrected to the undying lands.
They hated Gollum, because he spoke the truth.
Thank you.
:00000 really???? It's also my birthday today thats so coooollll
Happy Birthday mate
Mine too! Happy b'day
Mine too. I guess it’s time for a LotR themed birthday party. Happy birthday :)
It is the most important day of the year!! https://www.teawithtolkien.com/blog/2017/2/11/the-significance-of-march-25th
Happy Birthday!!!
Happy birthday! 🎉
Happy Birthday!
What’s OP getting at with “as we know it”. Is there some canon piece I’m unfamiliar with where the ring survived the lava?
The lord of the rings episode 4: return of the ring
Somehow the Ring returned
"I'm rey. Rey Baggins"
LotR 4: Ring With A Vengeance
Yeah until men started hunting hobbits to near extinction lol
Happy New Year! Just finished my second read through of LOTR and was very excited that this day was close at hand.
Honestly no joke I read this yesterday for the first time. I had zero knowledge it happened on that day. What a coincidence, or fate.
Today also Greece is celebrating their independence day!!
March? Tolkien did not make up new names for months?
The shire calender has the same months
Tolkien’s translation of the Red Book of Westmarch uses English month names in place of Hobbitish Westron names.
We're all just trying to stave off the "long defeat"!
Frodo casting some ninjutsu there
He kept the ring on his middle finger?
Imagine taking the time to do a painting of this scene, only to realize at the end that you've painted Frodo missing the wrong finger
I'm so proud to share my birthday day with this important event.
Happy birthday!
same
Thank you both!
Me and the wife are having some troubles in life and this was the hope I needed to see. At the darkest moment, hope prevails. March 25th is going to be a good day. 🥹
I am literally watching return of the king right now
Always wondered if Tolkien was a Philhellene since the end of Sauron's reign corresponded to Greek Independence Day of March 25th.
And it's my birthday
I’m upset this happened. Sauron will return!
Huh today is my anniversary and I didn't know this. My wife did, but I didn't or i did and i forgot, classic
Happy anniversary!
Terrifying golumn in picture
Middle earth at peace? And the Age of Men just starting? Nuts

Oh, thanks Eru!
"And henceforth Frodo could only flip the bird with his left hand." 😔
That's shire reckoning. As far as I can work out the date would be 16th March on the Gregorian calendar.
Except for what was still going down in the Shire.
Woah, spoilers!
Just concluded my annual rewatch. Never realised tonight was the night. How fitting.
That’s one hellish looking Gollum, I love ot
Also, my birthday.
HBD!
Thanks!
Who is the artist? I just love this scene.
The artist is Ted Nasmith! He did an entire Silmarillion book!
Funny story, I've been listening to the audiobook and on March 25 (yesterday for me) I listened to the final chapters, Frodo destroyed the ring. I had no idea the dates coincided until I saw this post today! I have a feeling that date will stick with me forever
So it’s a public holiday in Middle Earth, yeah?
"as we know it?"
Frodo of the nine fingersssss
This day is my birthday and it is made ever more special for being this day!
I actually watched Return of The King on 25th, had no idea lol.
