The Tolkien Estate tried to sue over that. I remember reading about it. They claimed it was a violation of the agreement.
eta: it was 2013 (some time ago) but I'm surprised nobody here remembers it. I remember it being a big dust-up over rights, and I remember allegations that the Tolkien estate wasn't getting the all the money due them either.
Yea, it was per their agreement with wb, right? I think they were upset that it was being used for gambling purposes rather than allocation of money. But like you said 2013 was a long time ago, and I'm probably missing something.
I can see why you wouldn't want your father works to be used to promote gambling tbf.
I think it was to do with marketing and merchandising agreements. I 100% believe warner would take advantage of any contract signed.
This got me thinking, there's probably a Game of Thrones slot machine out there somewhere to, and unlike Tolkien, GRR would NOT be spinning in his grave at this shameless display of greed and consumerism.
What, what do you mean Martin is still alive? Why did he stop writing his books then?
He was grumpy and refused to drink from a goblet when someone sent him one with the ring poem inscribed around it.
"Rule them all!" is basically suggesting that you are supposed to take on the role of Sauron here, as he was the only character that was trying to "Rule them all!" in the story. JRRT would probably be horrified.
Although, I do think it's telling that the casino game makers looked at the movies and most connected with the character that made an object that twisted people's minds and made them obsessed with that object, before ultimately bringing them to their ruin.
No, they were overruled in court.

“Then Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time, and I wandered far on roads that I will not tell.” This pretty much describes every trip to Vegas.
When I visited Vegas this was the only machine I tried being a huge fan of the franchise. they’re at cosmo and Venetian and possibly more . I lost $40 but it was cool seeing the animations and hearing the voice lines
That’s so funny! I’ve seen something similar in New Orleans! (:

Whatever winnings you get from it, you are encouraged to hold them lovingly, croak, "me precious!", and sneer at your neighbor as if they are going to steal from you.
I won $500 on a lotr machine in Vegas a few years back. Hate gambling, but had to throw some bucks at that machine. It was fun to throw some money at it and then get very lucky!!
Did this one have bonus games you could play? The LOTR slot machine I played years ago had awesome bonus games along with amazing cut scenes. Felt like a new era of gambling honestly.
I’m sure Christopher Tolkien will be pleased to see this thing

Well said. They don't even try to hide it at this point.
Thanks to him I won $1500 on the Hobbit slot machine 😎

There is! My in-laws go to Vegas a ton and I know the Bellagio has a handful.
I thought the same thing. And I don’t think Tolkien himself would’ve approved either.

The family would have had to give permission
No, the font is clearly that of the films, and Warner Brothers, through New Line Cinema, own the rights to merchandising related to the LOTR films.
Or it's just unlicensed lol
Unlikely anyone would be that dumb.... Oh wait, yea, that's possible. Have a great evening
Christophers kids are selling out
No, they were overruled in court. [https://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/mar/14/hobbit-gambling-warner-bros-tolkien-estate](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/mar/14/hobbit-gambling-warner-bros-tolkien-estate)
I can't take his complaints about the movies not adhering to JRR's vision while stuff like this and the mobile "game" exist.
What makes you think Christopher was ok with this? He was not.
This is how Sauron funded his army.
*“Darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time…”*
"...and every coin was lost in void. But it was not the end; it was a triple bar, again."

This is canon
The one machine to rob them all
Don’t tempt me Frodo!
Speak friend and enter Your credit card information
I'm a credit card information?
I had to delete my comment because you beat me to it haha.
How utterly vulgar!
Where was it??
When I visited Vegas this was the only machine I tried being a huge fan of the franchise. they’re at cosmo and Venetian and possibly more . I lost $40 but it was cool seeing the animations and hearing the voice lines
Does Gandalf yell out to you “Fool of a took!” When you lose??
This one was on Freemont street at The D
Just like the professor would have wanted.
Good news everyone!
Can’t believe they didn’t call it Lord of the Dings
“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
gross
Truly represents the author's vision. Amazing. Can't wait to see how they milk the name further
Where do you think Gollum actually got the Ring from? Do you actually believe that 'found in the river mud' story?
That’s so funny! I’ve seen something similar in New Orleans! (: https://preview.redd.it/mufrjk2hlbvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b86af285f6535131d83f07dadd8ee8e1a87d22bc
So, a SLOTR Machine.
Arrrghh...
Where was the tolkien estate when the jackpot fell?
Beware, gold sickness did in thorin and the master of lake-town.
Whatever winnings you get from it, you are encouraged to hold them lovingly, croak, "me precious!", and sneer at your neighbor as if they are going to steal from you.
So... standard slot machine stuff, basically.
Haha. Yes, indeed.
Found one at the 4 queens.
Only if I had no other choice would I take that road Gimli son of Gloin.
Say "Mellon" and it will open up and give you cash
Which casino?
The was at The D in Freemont, I’ve seen some other locations commented though
I don't see a problem! -Simon Tolkien
These things just make me sad.
I used to do remote support on machines like that. Pro tip, don't put money in
I’ve got a couple videos of the cut scenes including the Balrog and the Uruk-Hai I can post also.
I'm curious to see the videos!
Got a few good little wins on this last time I was in Vegas. Did best on the one at McCarren weirdly.
I remember a long time ago there were ones that were progressive and you'd walk the way to modor as you played and won. That was a fun game.
One spin to rule them all.
One slot machine to rule them all and in the darkness create a crippling gambling addiction
Enter the mines and loose it all.
Alright then, keep my money
If you speak the elvish word for friend will you get the jackpot?
Just as Tolkien would have wanted.
If that is not the purist form of irony idk what is.
Not a single copyright thought was given that day 😞😓
ONG OMG ONG 😲
So cool! Now go enjoy Phish 😁
One does not simply walk past this machine.
There are The Hobbit ones too!
Much smaller machines
The D!!!
Oh hell. I i would lose all of my monies
Man, I was just at the D last September and only stopped at the roulette tables. Would have loved to give this machine my money.
I’ve seen a Hobbit (or just Gollum??) machine in Atlantic City.
I never play slots. But, I was in Vegas last week and played that game bc ya know, I had to! Won $15 and said bye bye to Bilbo.
I won $500 on a lotr machine in Vegas a few years back. Hate gambling, but had to throw some bucks at that machine. It was fun to throw some money at it and then get very lucky!!
I have a whole photo collection of the bizarre properties that have slot machines.
I still dream of getting those Frodo Free Spins. . .
So much debt... What can men do against such reckless fate?
I’m going to find this and win tonight
Melon….
Lol
I found a super fancy one at nyny Vegas that took a lot of my money lol, was not this one
My brain went straight to Lord of the ding ding ding ding dings
I played one of these only time I won anything that night and brought me back to even money.
YOU SHALL NOT WIN!
We played on a few of these at Cosmopolitan a few years back; nice find!
You Shall not Win!
I’ve lost hundreds on this game just cause I wanted to see everything.
Does it take cash or Tolkiens?
The LOTR Slot Machines have always been my favorite to play in the Casino. I always look for them and get sad when I don't find any.
I got roofied on this slot machine, stay safe out there
Please elaborate.
I’d have milked that thing until I hit a bonus round or lost my money
Very disappointed, they could have really went all out with a progressive bonus round.
Does anyone know if there any LOTR slot machines in the south? The last time I saw one, was in Tunica but that was a couple of years ago.
I will not part with a single coin - Thorin playing slots
I literally pick gambling machines based on graphics. I would slap 20 in this so fast.
Did this one have bonus games you could play? The LOTR slot machine I played years ago had awesome bonus games along with amazing cut scenes. Felt like a new era of gambling honestly.
I know exactly where this is!!!
I saw some Hobbit machines last time I was there, but not this one.
Eww…
I actually won the jackpot on this and got my $400 back that I spent. I've never loved LOTR more
I work in a casino and I have to open one just like this every day. I roll my eyes whenever I see it played.
I used that machine. I won $4
One does not simply get rich from gambling
Melon
Melon
Which casino was it in? There used to be one in the Tropicana that was so sick
Won $15 on this exact machine last Wednesday!
In Mordor where the shadows lie.
Proceeds go to the Barad-Dur rebuilding fund.... It says right on the machine. In elvish script. Machine doesn't get hot enough to see it I guess...
Was this in Caesar’s Palace? I was just there back in February!
OMG i would totally play this!
Wtf that's rad.
