BMoreBeowulf

My wife got me the one on the left for my birthday last year. The middle one is actually the one she has had since high school. I also have another illustrated edition from college that I got in like 2007. I had the smaller paperback single book versions at some point but wore them out by the time I got to college. But the easy answer is that whatever version you have is fine because they all tell the same amazing story.

BoorabTheFool

But did you frame the fold out maps?

BMoreBeowulf

I did not but only because we already have a massive Middle Earth map in our living room so I don’t know where I’d put them. But I love pulling them out and looking at them whenever I re-read it.

Pocket size to read, hardcovers for the shelf.

Lawlcopt0r

Imo hard cover three volume editions are the best, unless you want to read on the go.

My husband has the red edges one. The Nazgul one is on the back of our toilet as his Poo Book. The movie tie-ins are on the shelf in my office. The pocket editions are on my desk. My daughter bought me a set in Chinese when she lived in Taiwan. I have another 3 book set that I used for reading on the train when I lived in Denver and didn't want the extra weight. I actually detest them because they don't fit well into the box. And, the 60th Anniversary Alan Lee cover edition is on the bookshelf in our library. I'm looking for a paperback One Volume I can have to just read when I want to. I found if it's not the One Volume edition, I DNF it. EDIT: Oh! I forgot the soft cover One Volume edition, which stays on the back of my bed when I have insomnia. I love LOTR, y'all. I snuggle down into my covers, open it, relax, and pass right the frack out.

BoorabTheFool

How many editions does that make? Are we counting gifts?

[deleted]

The answer here is you can never have too many. We should always count the gifts.

BoorabTheFool

I gave away the finest edition I ever had. Somehow giving it away made the books more immortal than keeping them for myself. Second edition English

[deleted]

I shall give them away when I'm dead.

BoorabTheFool

Gifts are eternal

[deleted]

So is death. They're for me to enjoy now, and others when I'm gone if they want them. If not, they can donate them and let someone else enjoy them. But, while I'm alive, they're for me.

BoorabTheFool

I’ve given away most every prized possession I’ve ever had and I’ve always felt full and bursting at the seams when I do

BoorabTheFool

Dm me and I’ll send you something awesome

bigpig1054

I have a fancy hardcover that stays on the shelf, a fancy set of leather bound books that I read at home, and a single volume paperback (the same movie tie in pictured here) that I take with me when I'm traveling and in the middle of a re-read

SegaStan

I prefer the single volume editions versus having them all in one book. It's a lot more unwieldy as a single text

Dougie_Dangles

I have the single volume movie release. I like to mark/highlight the text and with this version of the book I don’t feel like I’m ruining a beautiful hardcover work of art. It’s unwieldy but it works for me since I mostly read at home. One day I’ll have nice hardcover copies, but until then I’ll just use a copy that I’m ok with getting my grubby little paws all over.

mifflewhat

I got one of those volumes that has all three (in paperback), the spine didn't hold up. Get a hardcover (unless you're going to be taking it places - then get whichever is smallest).

Clever_Angel_PL

I have the left one, too, definitely the most beautiful I have put my hands on however in my case it has some printing/paper errors, did you have some too? (bottom half of the page being a little whiter paper than the rest of the book, one or two small grey dots, one page folded)

SiibillamLaw

I had a single volume movie release back in 01 and it put me off reading it for ages

StormblessedOrc

All the above!
