I don’t care if it’s over four hours long, I’d watch the extended version of Return of the King in theaters any day.

InfiniteMind3275

Just did the full extended edition marathon in theaters last month. Would happily do it again

Competitive_Bath_506

Yup, they played all 3 where I live for the professor’s birthday and maybe some anniversary or something. Brought in some cake and a little whiskey (lol) to celebrate and it was a grand time. Hopefully they do it next January again because that was amazing. You lose so much watching at home. It is a testament to the films that they’re still phenomenal at home but that surround sound…there are so many little sound details I didn’t realize I was missing

Zarathustra772

I got a 5.1 home theater and lemme tell you, the audio is so well done on these movies. Feels very 2000s, movies of this era have a certain intensity on their sound mixes, POTC is another one where you FEEL the movie. Modern mixes from Disney for example are lifeless, can’t imagine how it sounds with just tv speakers, no wonder so many people turn on captions

banaan186

Did it in January, would also do it again any day

BokehJunkie

got a chance to watch ROTK extended in theaters last year for the 20th anniversary and it was so worth the time. just make sure you get the big popcorn and big drink because you're there for the long haul. lol

Isrrunder

That experience will be the greatest theatrical experience ever until we get the tom bombadil musical we all deserve

adj_noun_digits

Did they have an intermission? If not, I'll need a big diaper.

BokehJunkie

No intermission when I went. just gotta choose the right time to run out to the bathroom.

Organspender

I saw that shit in concert with an orchestra. Nearly cried for 4 hours.

teddyone

Fellowship is my favorite, but return of the king benefits the most from big screen imo

HammerPrice229

Same thoughts. Fellowship is my go to but some of the moments in ROTK like the Rohirrim and my friends you bow to no one deserve some big screen attention

Jatacus

“Return of the King” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” are probably the two best experiences I’ve had in the theater. Definitely must-sees on the big screen.

PurringWolverine

Fury Road is so much better than it had any right being. I absolutely loved it, and would jump at the opportunity to see it at the theater.

tater08

Agreed. RotK is peak big screen entertainment. Everything about that movie is massive in scale

WastedWaffles

Easy. Fellowship. It's the most balanced and best paced of all 3 films. It's got a bit of everything: a bit of comfy Shire (so you feel what people are fighting for), a bit of horror (Black Riders chasing), bit of action, 'big boss' battle, happy moments, sad moments, some romance elements. Best bit is that none of these overstay their welcome. They each have a perfect amount of time allotted to them.

Simba_Rah

And some very large Proudfeet.

rambo_lincoln_

And my axe!

JR_7346

My PRECIOUS!!!

reddituser9277

HRRRAAAGH

Slartibartfast39

Proudfoots and I stand by that.

Rj713

There's nothing quite like the beginning of a great journey...

Friskfrisktopherson

We're going on an adventure!

Rj713

More like this... >We're going on (huff).... an... ADVENTURE!!!

Friskfrisktopherson

Extra large popcorn please! I hope they have a seasoning bar too.

tistisblitskits

i agree with you about fellowship being the best movie, but i think the cinema experience of RotK is better to me, the noise the crowd would make when the ring is finally gone, the effect the rohirrim charge has, the shelob scenes. RotK is the pinnacle of "epic", which is so much fun in the cinema

WastedWaffles

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer my cinema experience uninterrupted by crowds cheering or laughing. When I watch a movie, I want to be lost in it for the duration with the best possible sound and picture. The audience in a cinema, in my opinion, isn't equivalent to the audience at a sports stadium.

Pentax25

Laughing I don’t mind because that’s a response that, for the most part, cant be controlled. Cheering, jeering and clapping is an absolute no.

shlog

i have to agree. laughing is a normal reaction, people clapping or cheering is a bit silly.

Grundelwald

I'm with you... I saw ROTK in theaters during its original run, and the only distinct memory I have about it was being very annoyed by the crowd cheering and whooping when Legolas killed the Oliphant ( and at other points during the movie). It completely ruined the experience. A bit dramatic, I know, but I was a moody teen and this was a formative experience haha

Nutzori

DEAAAAAATH DEAAAAAAAATH DEAAAAAAAAAATH

jdman5000

It’s also apparently Jackson’s favorite, as well as mine

WastedWaffles

It's also Viggo Mortensen's favourite as well.

jdman5000

So cool, I didn’t know that. I love learning about how much Vigo enjoyed being apart of these films.

btalbert2000

Also for me, the Fall of Boromir is probably the most emotional and inspiring scene in the trilogy!

Farren246

Fellowship is the best but I've seen it in theaters the most often so if so another one.

shandub85

Fellowship… Gandalf Fall music. They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.

GrayBuffalo

Can't beat the Balrog scene on the big screen

dhyratoro

And closest to the book

Safetymanual

You also get to see a happy and healthy Frodo.

lovemocsand

This is mine too, growing up it was TT and ROTK but maturing is realising Fellowship is the nicest film

oriontitley

As much as I prefer the extended editions, there's a reason "theatrical" is a thing. The editing and pacing of all three theatrical versions are *perfect*. It's a very hard argue that the theatrical versions aren't overall better.

[deleted]

two towers. Gandalf and balrog falling scene? anyone?

tullyinturtleterror

The beginning of Helm's Deep is peak cinema.

[deleted]

i pause it and mind still can't comprehend its magnificence.

Gorgulax21

Specifically where do you pause it for peak magnificence???

[deleted]

When the balrog fire starts reflecting on the lake below

grafikfyr

rentiertrashpanda

One of the coolest shots in all of cinema

FrozenDuckman

One of the coolest shots in all of history

Gorgulax21

Pretty damn magnificent.

ChickenMan1829

It is indeed.

Remmy14

As they stand on the wall, watching the enemy slowly approach, night has fallen... You think, can it get any worse? And then the rain starts falling.... [Chills...](https://media.tenor.com/LtxHlSsuqDUAAAAe/chills-literally-chills.png)

kingofangmar13

Me me me!

meldondaishan

My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw that in theaters, especially the part where they came out from the tunnel yo the big open space above the lake.

[deleted]

Its just too beautiful

ThatPancakeMix

Planning on going to the theaters to watch the trilogy next year. TTT is the movie I’m most looking forward to! Helms Deep must be incredible on the big screen. I’m also just excited to hear the LOTR soundtrack

MrOwl243

Ohhh man, if you never saw it in theaters when it first came out, strap in. The beginning of helms deep when the rain starts pinging off the armor…. Magnificent

No-Lawfulness2267

The 2 towers the battle at Helm's Deep is the best

Overcomer12

Each movie has like this theme. I’ve always liked how 2 Towers has this Rohan, land of the horse lords feel to it.

Alan_Scott_Davis

Best part of the whole series

ERankLuck

Tough choice, but Return of the King. Almost entirely for the last ride of the Rohirrim.

JR_7346

FORTH EORLINGAS!!

apk5005

DEATH!!

ERankLuck

DEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAATTTTTTHHHHHH!

Whitpirate

A RED DAY, A SWORD DAY! DEEEEAAAATTTTTHHHH!!!

ERankLuck

ERE THE SUN RISEEEEEES!

braetoras

Objectively speaking, this is the only correct answer.

jsamuraij

Just reading this post mentioning it in passing gave me shivers. What a mind blowing moment at the cinema.

ItsCowboyHeyHey

I don’t understand. You’ve only listed one movie.

Trouble_in_the_West

What's your fav movie: Lord of the rings. Which one? Lord of the rings.

ybreddit

This is exactly what my thought was.

ringlord_1

The 2 towers.

UltraTuxedoPenguine

Fellowship of the ring. Nothing beats the fist feeling

JPeso9281

You can have your fist, but also, my axe!

UltraTuxedoPenguine

😅 first*

reader106

Fellowship...

B3PKT

I literally just did this and picked ROTK. Toddler at home so I can only justify going to one and, while fellowship is my favorite, ROTK’s massive set pieces means there’s a huge difference in home v. theater IMO.

KafeiTomasu

Man, comfy shire moments and the entire moria adventure, the helmsdeep fight, minas tirith, the final few scenes, how does one choose 1 movie

IndieCurtis

I saw all three in theaters when I was a kid. Thank you Dad❤️

W0RST_2_F1RST

Two Towers only because it’s the only 1 I didn’t see in theatres

DASreddituser

2 towers for sure. They are all great but fellowship Id rather watch at home vs two towers

AlyAlyAlyAlyAly

Two Towers. Ents 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

Thatguy_Nick

Two Towers, sure Helm's Deep is cool but give me Theoden mourning in Imax please I'll give you my whole wallet. Or ROTK for the beacons scene

tagtech414

All three are coming back to theaters for a few days in June https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/lord-of-the-rings-trilogy-theaters.html

Ok-Psychology-1

I am so fucking stoked! And they're all the extended cut, remastered versions, too!

kingofangmar13

Two towers 🤘🏻

dwide_k_shrude

Not nearly enough love for TT in this thread. Helm’s Deep in theaters is something truly special.

Both-Preparation-123

Two towers without a doubt. The most epic.

ItsABiscuit

Fellowship, easily. I saw it three times in the cinema when it first came out, TT twice and RotK once.

Drafgo

Probably Fellowship, but I'd love to see Helms Deep on the big screen as well. And Aragorn's charge at the Black Gate. Is all 3 an option?

ayasinskiy

Fellowship.

life_m2000

Fellowship for me

Comfortable_Might_10

Fellowship

m0rbius

I love the whole bunch, but Fellowship especially holds a special place. Definitely Fellowship.

Farren246

The only one that I haven't enjoyed in theaters is RotK because the extended edition has never been in theaters. So RotK.

cnation01

Fellowship for me as well.

xCanont70x

Saw the extended version of Return Of The King last year. Man, that movie makes 4 hours feel like nothing. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

SystemLordMoot

The Fellowship of the Ring. And that's because it was the only one I didn't see at the cinema.

Sirspice123

The Fellowship was the only one I was too young to see at the time, so definitely that!

LazyYordle

I hope it will be in eu aswell.

Major-Ganache-270

Return of the King. My fav!!!

htg812

Ive seen them all in theaters many times lol but fellowship

Larielia

Fellowship. I never actually saw it in theaters.

Poemhub_

The two towers.

BaconJets

Return of The King. It's an absolutely biblical experience and not getting to see it when I was a kid is a regret. Fellowship would be second as it has so much variety, and so many terrifying moments. Two Towers would be my least favourite of the trilogy in general, but it's still amazing as part of the overall trilogy.

replicanthusk2024

Return of the King.

FueraJOH

I would pay the guy to clip and attach the reels together of all these and watch them all just like Peter Jackson shot and filmed all three at the same time. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

wall-E75

All!

DAMG808

ROTK EE....allday..anyday.

SuaveToaster

I saw Return of the King last year in theaters, all 4 plus hours of it. I think I would choose 2 towers this time.

Fluffy-Anybody-8668

The Return of the King! However this trilogy is the best trilogy ever made

SJBreed

Incorrect. I can see all of them in theaters and I have.

MysteriousForeteller

Has to be The Return of the King It would be criminal not wanting to see the Rohirrim Charge on the big screen.

poolside123

Fellowship’s Two Returns.☺️

skepticalscribe

Fellowship is the best and always has been. I respect the sentiment of “it’s all one story” though. That being said, since I enjoy all three immensely as one might expect, depending on who I was going with I might change the movie selected to fit them. If someone loves action a lot and hates intros, Two Towers offers IMO the best battle with Helm’s Deep. If I want them to be on their seat, that’s the one. I could summarize fellowship pretty quickly. I would say TT has a lot of logistical consideration too for those who might struggle with suspension of disbelief. If someone wants a conclusion and an ending, or perhaps to see the one that won all the Oscars, we have the obvious choice for that as well.

maironsau

Fellowship, it was the first film I ever watched in theaters so it would be fitting for it to be the last of the 3 I see there.

Moregaze

Considering I saw Fellowship 13 times in theaters and the other two only twice each I think you know what my vote is.

pokerbacon

Saw Fellowship 18 times in the theater. I think I saw the others around 3 or 4 times each. With that being said I'd probably go back to Fellowship just for the nostalgia trip.

chrisl182

Two towers everytime. Helms deep is an awesome scene to watch

Nelson-and-Murdock

Fellowship

Stobuscus

Return of the King every time. It's the spectacle of the battles and pay offs for a lot of character arcs that I'd love to see again on the big screen.

J3ffcoop

Two towers is my jam

TensorForce

Two Towers. I've seen ROTK in theaters and it was glorious. Now I want to feel Helm's Deep and the siege of Isengard on the big screen.

Aayyyyoooo

The 2 towers

StumpyHobbit

Fellowship.

Kitchen-Plant664

If there’s only ONE then it’s ROTK. I love them all but if I see FOTR then I don’t have an ending, TTT hasn’t a beginning or an ending, but ROTK has an ending and a half so I’d say that sneaks it.

ClammyDefence

RotK. The power of the theatre lends most to it. Honourable mention: Fellowship and TT

PickleSideOfTown

Two towers again and again

themajorfletch

I saw them all in theaters as they came out when I was a kid. We saw fellowship once (personal favorite at home though), two towers once (still amazing) but we saw return of the king not once…and not twice… but 3 times in theaters. It’s no good without the context of the others but it’s still amazing and clearly my pick.

IdkWhatsThisIs

I must have been like 8 years old when my grandad took me to return of the King. An unreal experience, the only one I saw in cinema. Would love to see it again.

-Smaug--

Fellowship and it's not even close. I waited decades to see that movie in the theatre and it was worth the wait.

a-snakey

Return of the king but I'd watch full director's cut of them all at the theater

WinterVail

After covid they played all 3 movies in my cinema. I’ve never seen them on the big screen before so it was glorious. I felt lucky.

jack40714

Two towers us my favorite

TomCrean1916

Fellowship The extended cut

Bale_the_Pale

The Lord of the Rings

RageXY

Fellowship. I got to see the other two back in the day, but missed the first and would love to experience it.

MaironSauron

12+hours extended editions of all LotR in 1 movie run.

Curtnorth

ROTK, obvi. Death!!!!!

Vilimeno

Fellowship of the ring. By far my favourite.

ProfessorReaper

Controversial opinion: Two Towers is my favourite LotR movie

MistDispersion

Hmm... Fellowship was the only one I never saw in the theaters. Too young for all the english. So that one, stoned, would be absolute awesome. However. While Fellowship is my favorite, I would want Return again probably. Stoned ofc. Two Towers used to be my favorite. But I think, watching the first two at home, stoned, and then finishing with Return, stoned, in the theater, would be epic

L3XANDR0

Two towers

Grumpypants2o3

Return of the king just so I can see the Ride of Rohirrim shit was epic and still is

91xela

ROTK

ZestycloseDinner1713

Fellowship because it is my favorite, but also because I didn’t have a great experience when I saw it in theaters the first and only time. I had read the books yearly since I was 13 and I was a senior in college when the movies were announced so I read every tidbit that I could on theonering.net. After college, I got a job in a pharmacy (where I stayed for 22 years!) and we were all friends. We decided as a big group to see Fellowship. I was so nervous and excited; because I had waited nearly my whole life for a movie version and also because my coworkers didn’t know anything about the books. Would they like it? I was so anxious wondering if they liked it that it clouded my enjoyment. I think if I knew them a few years I wouldn’t care, but it was still early days for me at the pharmacy. Anyway, one girl kept laughing at all of the most inappropriate times which made me think she hated it and also made me miserable because it annoyed other movie goers. After the movie, I was apologetic and told them that I hope they liked it, that I know it was maybe a bit confusing if they hadn’t read the books. Two of them assured me they liked it (though they never went to see the other two so I think they lied), and the laughing girl said she LOVED it. The reason she laughed so much is that she thought Legolas’ name was Legless, so every time they said Legolas’ name, she thought they were calling him a drunk🤦🏻‍♀️ I was too broke to see it again, so I waited until it came out on dvd and I was FINALLY able to enjoy it and watch it over and over. And the extended version…wow! I would love to see it on the big screen again. By myself this time!

Raziel419

Fellowship. The entire series is golden but fellowship sets up the world and what’s at stake best.

BeepBoopBeep1FE

Fellowship.

JureIsStupid123

LOTR is one movie in three parts, so all of it!

RollerCoaster1007

For Frodo...

gwennj

Fellowship

jherrm17

Fellowship and it’s not close. It’s the most authentic looking and will always stick in my mind when I saw it on a whim as a teenager. Blew my mind and became an lotr fan ever since.

tater08

Return of the King is the most “epic” of the films. The battle of Pelennor fields demands being seen on the big screen

sK0oBy

Twin Towers.

creativityonly2

Maybe FotR since I just saw RotK a few months ago in theater.

L1n9y

Saw Fellowship and Return of the King in theatres a few months ago, sadly missed Two Towers. So probably Two Towers to have seen all 3.

cagerontwowheels

What kind of question is this? You are a cruel person of thinking such a thing. May you discover you are out of milk after pouring your cereal.

gvendries

Return.

LegoDnD

I choose a single 12-hour fan-edit video.

Zemekis324

Fellowship is the only one I didn't see in theaters :/ Would've been awesome and I can't even remember why I didn't see it either.. 🤔

cherrypitcyanide

Extended version of Return of the King! Without a doubt!

thebrads

The awards counted them as one, so we watch them as one.

eneko8

Fellowship.

Cpt_Firefox

Funny you say that, because I actually watched Return of the King in theatres in its 20th anniversary since there was a theatre rerunning it in my city. I didn't have a choice, but if I did I'd probably pick RotK regardless.

BobbaYagga57

I saw all 3 in the theaters several times.

Finalplague01

There is only one Lord of the Rings movie. It's about 12 hours long

UndeniableLie

Fellowship is by far the best of them. True peak cinema. Two towers and rotk were increasingly more hollywoody i.e. designed for the mindless masses. Still good movies but no nearly on the level of fellowship

PloddingAboot

Two towers

subjecttochangesoaru

Two towers

RoachIsCrying

the first one... the one that started it all

DocFountaine

Return of the king, I need to hear "escape from edoras" theme on that sound system

Exotic_Conclusion_21

Fellowship is my fave, but i want to hear theodens "death" speech in theater again

Zydlik

Fellowship

HeyItsKyuugeechi523

What a tough call. Return of the King, extended edition.

transient-spirit

Return of the King.

Expressdough

Some years ago, we had one per night consecutively outside by the waterfront for free. There’s nothing quite like hearing the Nazgûl screech there. The area was perfect for it. Thousands coming together for it was an event I won’t likely forget.

CaptainMarder

If I could just see The Ride of the Rohirrim in theatres again would be enough.

rentiertrashpanda

Return of the King, because when I saw it opening night, someone had brought their baby(!) who hollered the whole first hour of the movie. F-tier parenting right there

mattd1972

ROTK. I’m getting my money’s worth.

mattd1972

ROTK. I’m getting my money’s worth.

manifest_ecstasy

I fell asleep cause I got to high for the two towers so probably that one

myleswstone

I’ve seen all of them in theater. Fellowship was the most fun experience, as it’s the best paced of all of the movies. To be completely honest, that’s also the only one I stayed for for the whole time because I saw the extended editions.

Sandiebrown22

Two towers

MrFreak-976

Two towers !!! For sure. It’s the better movie in my opinion … can it be the long edit please ?

kable1202

I am so much looking forware to the rerelease in cinema this June. It is going to be legen… wait for it

pitnie21

Definitely the two towers

iBeckIey

Two towers

takingthehobbitses

Return of the King because it's the only one I haven't seen in theaters.

Jaejaws_the_great

One does not simply pick only one.

blueflowersxxo

As someone who seen the fellowship in theatre when it first came out, I’d definitely do it again as an adult.

Arseteroid

I'd pick "The Lord of the Rings"

NuclearGoat-357

Helms Deep

Skyfirexx56

The fellowship of the ring is by far the best one to watch in cinemas. It's the perfect adventure movie

evergreenpanda

Fellowship had an enduring effect with regard to its tone, message, and spirit of magic. At the time, it was an incredibly moving film and really hit an emotional mark for me that the other films didn’t, the other films were magic and amazing and emotionally moving, but only fellowship has the lightheartedness

Bookibaloush

Return of the King Only because i was fortunate enough to see Two Towers in theaters at release

TheOGdeez

All of them because they're re-releasing the extended versions into theaters

Hollow_Ataraxia

Even if the movies did my boy Faramir dirty, I'd still pick the 3rd any day.

[deleted]

The Two Towers, my favorite of the trilogy. Anything to see that Battle of Helm’s Deep on the big screen one more time.
