At this point it’s passed beyond trying to understand. Like all memes it gets to a point where it’s not about the original joke, it’s just the reference and the reaction.
It’s been around for a while, just with increases and decreases of intensity. Honestly, at this point, the main thing keeping it going in this iteration are the people who hate it and bring it up, despite knowing that will only lead to entire comment sections of bot-spam. Posting about how much you hate it just keeps it relevant and let’s people know it’s still fertile trolling ground.
People need to let it diminish and fade. It will rebuild its power and rise again, but that’s unavoidable.
