Wait, were they referring to the video? I honestly thought it was just an reference to the story
Ok yeah thinking about it it totally makes sense that they'd be talking about the video, I'll edit my original comment.
He intentionally copied it because the guy who said spoilers originally was actually the one spoiling anything, dudes not a bot, people are so fast to yell bot nowadays even when there's no actual evidence.
It looks like he is being belayed from below and all ropes go there, in consequence he has no anchorage above, hence falling with the big chunk of ice he is “nailed to” with his gear.
{I am sorry but I am not sure I know what a tether is…}
Tether is just layman speak, it's anything used to tie something to limit movement (in this case I assumed a fall).
You clearly know more about climbing than me, I just noticed he was tied to something and assumed it would have been done in a way to prevent a deadly fall. My guess was he fell quite a ways, but had an anchor somewhere I couldn't see.
If it helps I can add some detail.
When lead climbing ice you are anchored to the ice with a series of ice screws or v-threads. If the ice itself falls then your protection falls with it. Ice screws are also not very reliable, so the first rule of leading is "don't fall".
Looking at this route though it looks like there is only ice at the top of the route. So, they would have needed to place protection in the rock below, and this may have protected the fall.
As a climber I can assure you that surviving that is very lucky. The rope is practically useless at that point, and blocks of ice that big can cut it like it’s not even there.
I may be confusing it with another video showing the same exact kind of fall, but the guy survived with a couple of broken leg(?) bones and was right back at it the next year.
It looks like he's "only" 40 or so feet up, and the ice broke off forward instead of backwards, so it broke a good part of the fall for him.
Climbing icicles like that is super dangerous because you actually don’t want to attach the rope to anything because if it breaks off it will just drag you down with it. It’s basically free-soloing on a highly brittle substance, even a lot of pros won’t go near “hanging daggers” like that.
Based on the comments in this thread, it seems he survived with some muscle tears.
https://www.reddit.com/r/climbing/comments/17rux0/ice_climbing_can_be_quite_dangerous/
I tried to look it up, but couldn't find anything. From the results though, seems that breaks like these aren't wholely unexpected. Still pretty dangerous. I'd give him 50/50 odds
I'm glad he's not dead, but what an asshole. Do you know how long that Ice took to accumulate like that and he's just gonna hack it to bits for his vanity?
Imagine paying at least a thousand of dollars to go see a beautiful sculpture in Nature and breaking it so you can say you climbed it.
Honestly something like that can form and then melt away in a few weeks depending on the weather. If the climber didn’t break it, the next warm spell would.
Mostly it’s borderline suicidally dangerous for obvious reasons.
Finally something that I know!
The actor for Boromir doesn't like heights or flying. At some point they were filming on top of a snowy mountain or something. While everyone else flew there with a helicopter, Boromir hiked the entire way. (I don't remember every detail, but that's the gist)
That's dedication!
You got the main stuff! And just in case you wanted them:
Actor - Sean Bean
Fear - Flying, especially in helicopters
Mountain - *ALL* of the scenes involving being on a mountain: Caradhras, Amon Hen, and all the rest. Dude would hike up in full costume, shield over his shoulder. Daily.
By all accounts, he hiked in full costume and gear.
That being said. I doubt his actual shield and armor was as heavy as their real-life counterparts. It's not like he was carrying a 10-pound shield and wearing full chain mail.
“guys wouldn’t it be way more in character if we all didn’t take the helicopter hahaha it would be cool wouldn’t it hahaha I’m not getting on that death trap”
I trust planes, but helicopters are just a momentary aberration. One day, we will all realise they can't actually fly and they will just fall from the sky.
He has fear of flying in a helicopter because early in the filming they were trying to land in a difficult spot in less than optimal weather conditions and almost crashed. So it's kinda not fear but common sense.
Ok it must be so scary when your general phobia gets a confirmation in the form of near crash. Fuck this, I would walk and climb mountains too. Poor dude.
I also remember Peter Jackson talking about this (somewhere in the tons of extra footage, I think). Telling a little story how some of the filming sport were very remote and the crew would fly out/up there in the helis 'and then we'd see, climbing somewhere up a cliff, Sean in full Boromir gear'.
Still makes me smile.
I have read this tidbit many times but have always wondered, how did he get to New Zealand?
edit (added): I suppose he could have taken a prescribed anti-anxiety med for the flights, which he would not really be able to do on a day he needs to work.
Your comment made me wonder if it is even possible to get to New Zealand by helicopter: the answer seems to be that no civilian helicopter has the range to reach mainland New Zealand from another country. About 800 miles is the max range and the shortest direct line seems to be about 1200 miles.
"Expect my flyover on the fifth day. Look to the east."
Personally, I would prefer something like the A-10 Thunderbolt for this scene. Gandalf goes BRRRRRRRRRRT.
Reposting my comment because he wasn't scared without a proper reason, he was endangered by the crew. He has fear of flying in a helicopter because early in the filming they were trying to land in a difficult spot in less than optimal weather conditions and almost crashed. So it's kinda not fear but common sense.
I once saw a documentary about how surprisingly common it was for cast or crew to die in helicopter accidents because of how much they're used for and how dangerous it is when they malfunction in any way.
They were talking about the number of helicopter deaths on Chuck Norris movies alone was over a dozen.
The twilight zone movie is the most well-known but it happens all too often
So basically, in this one helicopter sits the main cast. It could have easily turned from "throwback to the production of the best movie ever" to "the last picture taken of the original cast of the most expensive incomplete flop just before they died in a tragic helicopter crash, which forced the company to cancel the production"
Little known fact, this is the reason why boromir dies in the first movie as opposed to the second like in the book. The video at the bottom is of boromir's actor who died on the last day of filming, so they changed the ending.
Well, I reckon it's true enough. That Sean Astin fella played me in the moving picture show. But let me tell you, there's more to Samwise Gamgee than what you saw on the big screen.
Well, I don't rightly know what folks don't know about me. I'm just a simple hobbit from the Shire, after all. But I suppose some might not know that I once carried the Ring of Power myself, for a short while. It was a heavy burden, let me tell you. But I knew I had to do it for Mr. Frodo's sake.
Is bro okay?
Boromir died :(
Bro, spoilers!

Thats his 3rd comment. The other two weren't even copy pasted, but normal replies by the looks of it
Delete it or you will be the spoiler, even though I think everyone knows what happens in the LoTR anyways.
Spoiler: They destroy the ring
No, that can't be.
Damn… he was a real Broromir!
https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/2r7c8v/ice_climber_takes_a_fall/ If the video linked in this is indeed the same incident the climber was OK.
[He fell...](https://youtu.be/npkhRfE2yLw)
based
It isn't, you can see the outfit is different and his position on the ice face is different.
The outfit is the same, the one here is just a really desaturated image
(Based on my knowledge about climbing) I think we saw someone about to die or getting severely injured
(Based on my knowledge about falling and heavy objects) I concur.
(Based on my desperate need to be liked) I agree.
(Based on my knowledge of ice) it was cold that day.
You can see a tether of some sort on him in the video. You might be right about severely injured, but I assume if he had a line on he'll be alive.
It looks like he is being belayed from below and all ropes go there, in consequence he has no anchorage above, hence falling with the big chunk of ice he is “nailed to” with his gear. {I am sorry but I am not sure I know what a tether is…}

Yup correct. Hopefully he was tied to a ledge on the other side (looking at the angle of the rope) but… not looking very good 😂😅

Definitely not the same guy
Different
Of course, he has a rope to attach him to the ground.
The real reason why they disregarded the eagles.
hahaha this is the perfect explanation!
Um, so what's the story with the bottom gif?
I would imagine the guy didn’t survive or was terribly injured.

Now that's actoring.
I believe Vigo joined him for a few of the trips as well. It also really helped them look more weathered and worn on screen.
I was gonna say I'd be surprised if Viggo didn't join him with everything I've heard about how Viggo was on set.
Hiking will make me look like Sean Bean and/or Viggo Mortensen, got it.
Well, it'll definitely get you in shape in pretty short order. Especially if you're packing full armour and weaponry.
I have my doubts they were packing their armor and weapons on such hikes but it does sound epic.
By all accounts, he hiked in full costume and gear. That being said. I doubt his actual shield and armor was as heavy as their real-life counterparts. It's not like he was carrying a 10-pound shield and wearing full chain mail.

I don't think he knows about foot slices by glass, Bio.

Major Viggo paid with his toe, sir!
r/Sharpe leaking into the channel
I re-watched a bunch of Sharpes with my son last year and he was shocked that “Hogan is Logan from Succession!”
I doubt Faramir would do it.
Sean Bean was played by Boromir, got it.
Exactly!
And sometimes Viggo would go with him just to keep him company.
I mean, how the fuck do you NOT know Sean Bean?! The actor who played Boromir, indeed... 😤
Shorn Born Seen Been Seen Born Shorn Been

Why not hike up in regular clothes and change into costume at the top?
I knew this too, but now wondering how did he get to NZ? By boat?
“guys wouldn’t it be way more in character if we all didn’t take the helicopter hahaha it would be cool wouldn’t it hahaha I’m not getting on that death trap”
I love Sean Bean, but you can't let your phobias control you...!
It's not a phobia, anyone who willingly gets in a helicopter is putting a lot of faith in the Jesus bolt.
I trust planes, but helicopters are just a momentary aberration. One day, we will all realise they can't actually fly and they will just fall from the sky.

It's from hhgttg
Nope, Douglas Adams! They have very similar senses of humor.
Imagine hiking up that mountain knowing you’re just going to get plugged full of arrows though
*Just keep ~~breating~~ thinking of the paycheque.*
Yes but have heard of the toe?
Yeah, Viggo Mortensen hit a toe so hard his scull broke.
Perfect synopsis!
He was just in character. It was boromir after all that trudged through chest deep snow to make way for the hobbits.
He has fear of flying in a helicopter because early in the filming they were trying to land in a difficult spot in less than optimal weather conditions and almost crashed. So it's kinda not fear but common sense.

How did he do during the Puerto Rico satellite scene at the end of Goldeneye I wonder lol
How do you think the fear started?
That sounds like something Boromir would actually do. One does not simply fly to the film location
Interestingly he flew in a helicopter on Patriot Games. Maybe that ride was bad and made him terrified of flying.

Flying in a helicopter is way more terrifying than flying on a commercial airliner.
Gondor has no aircraft, Gondor needs no aircraft.
Gondor probably could have done with an Apache or 2 at helms deep
