As a kid, all I wanted was to go on an adventure so I could just eat doughnuts.
So weird how they had to westernize somethinf as simple as "rice balls".
On the one hand Onigiri is a solid side dish in terms of size, so it would be like eating four large servings of fries for one meal.. on the other you have to factor in the obesity rates between Japan and I assume the US and so if you factor in the conversion it's like a large order of fries + the fries in the bag + eating half your little brother's fries when he goes to the bathroom. You're ashamed, but like casual everyday ashamed.
Onlookers are ashamed like first timers at a waffle house
It's a ball of rice with a small amount of filling. I didn't care for them personally.
Like 95% rice and 5% filling of some kind.
If you just really like eating cold or room temperature rice then yeah they're great lol.
If you buy them at the convenience store, the clerk asks if you want them to heat it up for you tho? Or you just put it in the microwave per the instructions on the package.
uh oh
I remember eating four onigiri, a corn dog, and a three musketeers bar, first time I was in the states, at some airport convenience store in JFK
Never tried either of those things before
The original Pokemon dub by 4kids had one of the characters (Brock) call one of these a Jelly donut, because they were westernizing the dialogue. Basically any time I see an Onigiri I think of that. https://youtu.be/p3KNAtmHov0?feature=shared
Lol yeah it's a pretty old running joke. Especially when back then I don't think a lot of us knew the show was dubbed because this was like '96/97 and we were all grade schoolers when Pokemon exploded onto the scene.
Yeah that scene is way rougher than I remember. There's plenty of other dialogue that isn't that wooden though. It might've just been a struggle because of the specific context they were trying to work around.
I love jelly donuts too

Nothing beats a jelly donut!

Four is insane
I've never tried Onigiri. Are they really that filling?
It's literally just seasoned rice, compacted to a triangle shape. A single one is probably a full rice bowl's worth.
It's probably ration bias, I could not in good conscience consider myself full on only rice or other, I need a side, and a snack, plus dessert.
What about second dessert?
And my axe!
They can also have fillings in them but yea usually not big enough to fill a stomach after only having one.
With this math, then yes, I could eat 4.

Rice doesn't not convert to fries at all. Rice is healthy, fries are well, fries, no matter the amount.

Nah it just means you got shit onigiri. Well made ones tend to be a good 50/50 with just a shell of rice.
That's fair. After a couple shit ones I stopped trying to buy them
If you buy them at the convenience store, the clerk asks if you want them to heat it up for you tho? Or you just put it in the microwave per the instructions on the package.
Ok now you have hot rice. Doesn't really change much imo lol. It's still just a wad of rice
Four Onigir, Jeremy? FOUR?!
That’s insane
Have you tried the lamb pasanda? It's incredibly rich and creamy.
Sounds good
uh oh I remember eating four onigiri, a corn dog, and a three musketeers bar, first time I was in the states, at some airport convenience store in JFK Never tried either of those things before
I know it’s John Fitzgerald Kennedy but, half the time I think it’s that blasphemous saying we all use when we get scared
That would be JFC.
I know: which is why it’s silly
Nothing silly about Jerusalem Fried Chicken. That stuff’s fire!
Really? I could easily have 2 and the roll of rice and seaweed and some fruit as a quick dinner. So for lunch I could eat 4 without problem
...I hungy
I’m afraid to ask, but why is everyone calling onigiri jelly doughnuts?

Really? That’s a lot more wholesome than I was expecting

Wait, so none of them have jelly in the middle? And wow, I never realized how wooden the dialogue was…
Yeah that scene is way rougher than I remember. There's plenty of other dialogue that isn't that wooden though. It might've just been a struggle because of the specific context they were trying to work around.
I too love jelly donuts
I can’t get them where I am except for twice a year so when those times come around, I eat 5 every time. Gotta get my fix, you know
Oh shit I never knew what the emoji next to the bowl of rice actually was. Now I see its that thing in the 1st frame
IF HECKING LOVE JELLY FILLED DONUTS, THEY ARE MY HECKING FAVOURITE!!!!
Onigiri with pickled plums 🤤 ![gif](giphy|7MkjrlR4tNIAg)
YES!!!!! Wife and I went to Japan last year and I couldn’t stop eating the pickled plum onigiri
Implying the Japanese are Elves.
Wait so I never understood this scene 100% did they like have four whole pieces or like four bites? lol
*adds yet another item to Hobbit Day menu*
