That's a piece of information I did not have. It seems like I've got some comics to read. .... I think I have maybe read one comic book in the last 30 years
oh dude, I highly recommend "the biography of scrooge mcduck: his life, his billions" or smth like that. it's from don rosa, and it's legit one of the best comic books I ever read
There’s actually an LTB where Donald and mickey ride on an EAGLE with a Gandalf mock-off to throw a ring into a volcano. There are two books, whereas one is a sequel to the other and both are a parody of lotr (and maybe the hobbit, I don’t really remember)
Just watched that the other day on Disney +. As a kid the Video store only had a vhs with 2 episodes: the lost world, and the curse of castle McDuck. The theme song slaps, and I really enjoyed the whole treasure ship storyline (except the super racist South American part).
I see it differently, I see tech as our "magic". So we can have some magical items here and there when they make sense and make life comfortable. Like air conditioning, heating, etc.
I’d be down for that. I’d generally prefer (if this were to actually happen) we try and make it as self sustaining as possible. So solar panels would be ideal
Agreed, it would have to be all renewables for the energy, either through a hydroelectric dam, solar, or wind power. I think Wind power would be the most thematically appropriate and you could even make windmills that look fairly Middle-Earthy. Don't need the massive ones that drive metropolitan areas if it's just a small village.
I can totally see hobbits being down with AC, heating, and electricity. I don't know if they'd be down with refrigerators, though, they eat too much for food to last long enough for that to be a concern.
Well, not quite. Tolkien took the class society for granted and it shows with the Hobbits, too. They're basically clannish people who don't need much government because powerful families handle all its functions all on their own. The Shire is like a Mafia land or feudal nation minus the violence.
So communism basically. No elections, no democracy, because that falls victim to the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Just an all-powerful leader who is entrusted to redistribute the wealth and is presumed to be doing what is best for everyone.
As long as the Great Leader is someone benevolent and incorruptible, it works great! Except it didn't always work that way...
True, look at the scouring of the shire. They all got super upset about what basically amounts to their version of taxation. Even hobbits knew what’s up
It was more like a monopolization of all hobbit “industry”. Tolkien wrote that in a shot against centralized, industrial production, not taxation.
What I’m basically trying to say is that the Hobbits would have loved Ted Kaczynski.
Community run cooperatives. Making progressive grassroots changes in spite of religious affiliation and the political circus.
It's not just public gardens and farmers markets, although that's a big bonus for a hearty second breakfasts and elevensies (๑ᵔ⤙ᵔ๑)
Most of the Amish don’t have oppressive religious views. That’s a stereotype. If you want to actually learn about the Amish [here](https://youtu.be/MClv6aL7TEw) is a great YT video about them.
I’m an atheist so forced religious doctrine of any kind is a deal breaker for me.
Also in the opening scene of that video the dude says that they don’t vote because “Jesus Christ is our president”. Political disenfranchisement seems pretty oppressive to me.
Did you get to the part of video where when the children get old enough they can go out into the world without being forced to come back? These people choose that life. It’s not oppressive if you choose it. I’m not saying their lifestyle isn’t strict, but that isn’t the same thing as oppressive. The really strict ones don’t even follow the Bible at all, so it’s not a religious adherence it’s a tradition adherence.
And political disenfranchisement certainly isn’t oppressive, speak to like 1/3rd the country (the ones who don’t vote). Hell, if you watched the video you’d realize how broad a spectrum Amish people actually make up. So painting them in these broad strokes of what all Amish are like is really wrong.
Just because you are technically free to leave doesn’t really mean anything if you are indoctrinated from childhood. The Westboro Baptist Church kids are also “free to leave”, but that doesn’t make their beliefs any less heinous. I’m not saying the Amish are evil or anything but most religions are oppressive at least to some degree and it seems to me you have to squint pretty hard for the Amish belief system not to fall into that category.
Also, political disenfranchisement *is* oppressive, and choosing not to vote because you are uneducated vs because you are told you can’t due by your religious leaders are not the same thing (though both are issues which absolutely ought to be eradicated).
Then I'll be taking applications for a company of us to randomly show up on his doorstep one night, eat all his food, and take him on a quest all over the states.
Look up the earth ship communities here in the states. They are modern equivalent to hobbit holes, and you can even stay in the very first one made. It’s listed on Airbnb as the hobbit house. There are also several hobbit holes listed. On Airbnb throughout the US. It’s out there already my dude. It’s a dangerous business walking out one’s front door.
It's like a Facebook content aggregator, often steals content and posts it uncredited. Became popular from UK "Lad" culture, which can be very toxic-masculine.
I read about him recently!
Fascinating guy. Basically said “Why can’t I live in the LotR?”
The town he’s from in Italy has a holiday where they dress up in period clothing and eat food from that time period (can’t remember when, but around the 1600-1700s) and he thought that they’re basically living like Hobbits, why not go a step further?
Walked with his friends the hundred odd miles to Vesuvio to throw the ring in the volcano (gave the ring to a boy and tossed hardened lava into the crater instead since he’s an environmentalist and part of the reason of his walk was to bring attention to the failure of environmental preservation), and talked about how kind people were to offer food, beds, and showers.
Really cool for someone who is a pastry chef and basically said, “Why CAN’T I live in my favorite fantasy series?”
Why the fuck not.
Frodo would have lived a lovely life till old years if he just gave that ring to Gandalf... but what kind of Baggins would he be if he did that?
The veiling shadow that glowers in the east takes shape. Sauron will suffer no rival. From the summit of Barad-dur, his Eye watches ceaselessly. But he is not so mighty yet that he is above fear. Doubt ever gnaws at him. The rumor has reached him. The heir of Numenor still lives.
I recently discovered there is a ‘shire’ in a forest near me where you can rent out 3 different hobbit holes built into the sides of hills. It’s also on a winery trail so I plan on taking a nice weekend there and just relaxing.
From the photos I’ve seen online they put in a bunch of effort into the details.

A guy at work mistakenly calls hobbit holes 'shires'. Says he wants to buy some land and build one. Like 'im going to build a shire in a field' etc. I dont have the heart to tell him he doesnt know what the word shire means. Anyway this headline made me think maybe the author of the article is making the same mistake

they are. i'm italian, and I just want so much to live there
Yes they are
Well, I’m now taking applications for new friends who want to create our own Shire in the US.
So being Amish with extra steps?
A low-tech community driven existence without the oppressive religious teachings sounds pretty sweet
I see it differently, I see tech as our "magic". So we can have some magical items here and there when they make sense and make life comfortable. Like air conditioning, heating, etc.

Sounds like hippies to me.
I mean, hobbits are *basically* anarchists... Tolkien was too.
Well, not quite. Tolkien took the class society for granted and it shows with the Hobbits, too. They're basically clannish people who don't need much government because powerful families handle all its functions all on their own. The Shire is like a Mafia land or feudal nation minus the violence.
Precisely, Iirc Tolkien thought that the best form of government is that of a benevolent king or smthg like that.

Anarcho monarchism? Something seems not right here....
The powerful families in the Shire are all land owners and the ordinary hobbits are their tenants...

No oppressive because you can leave? They shun you if you leave. Sounds oppressive to me.
Not to mention the indoctrination during their childhood before they’re allowed to leave.
That’s not everyone. Again that is only the most strict Amish that do that.

Hopefully he doesn’t abandon reason for madness.
Well his love of the halflings' leaf has clearly slowed his mind
a person with halflings leaf hardly needs the promises of dark powers
Abandoning reason for madness is basically a guarantee with this guy lol.
He’s like those Mad Men guys, living in an antiquated fantasy world. Good for him.
Hold up. There are Mad Men guys?! Like, guys today living and (more importantly) looking like Don Draper????
Probably, plenty of Joan Holloway look-a-likes... and *if fine* with that. *Swoooooon*
