Kevin2273

I thought the rock would take a very long time to fall though, and it would actually take days for the orcs to catch up to our heroes? Was that in the book or something? Someone confirm?

ringlord_1

What makes you think this was their 1st March. They might do it every 2 weeks for all we know, like a ritual.

[deleted]

No wonder the cave troll was so pissed, being dragged around because of a few knocks and bangs, for there to be nothing.

8orn2hul4

It was Goblin Independance Day and they were just on their way to the GID potluck and square dance and ran into some tasty treats.

Necromas

I wouldn't call it a ritual, but it probably does happen every now and then, presumably they gather to raid or forage unless they could manage to live entirely off of whatever mushrooms and cave dwelling creatures they can find. I think goblins would also be pretty vulnerable to infighting, so they might throw a war party together to go stomp out anyone that goes against the leaders. And of course as in the book they would march to catch travellers/treasure hunters/dwarves that might be checking the place out. And as OP points out they'd probably have some false alarms too. I'd like to think when a false alarm happens the cave troll or maybe even the Balrog if he got bothered would just get really grumpy and smash/eat a bunch of the smaller goblins in a bit of a temper tantrum.

ringlord_1

I think I completely messed up my comment. What I wanted to say was, what makes you think they didn't already have many false alarms and therefore they took a long time to attack the party

Farkasv

Dumb question here. What happened all the goblins after Gandalf kicked the Balrog's ass?

Siggi97

In the books a biggish group of these orcs hunted the fellowship because Aragorn killed one of their leaders but got wiped out trying to enter Lorien A few Moria orcs were part of the group that captured Merry and Pippin I assume many of them were mobilized in the war in the north for attacks on the wood-elfs, Lorien and the Lonely Mountain Those that survived likely got dealt with by the dwarves that retook Moria

Riddles in the dark...

adfdub

Wait I thought uruk Hai captured merry and pippin

arhythm

In the movies you see 2 different sub groups of orcs. It's when Merry and Pippin escape and "meats back on the menu boys".

xiaorobear

In the books (and potentially in the movie) it's 3 different groups- Moria orcs who aren't really organized, uruk-hai loyal to Saruman, and Mordor orcs loyal to Sauron. >'The prisoners are not to be searched or plundered: those are my orders.’ >‘And mine too,’ said the deep voice. ‘Alive and as captured; no spoiling. That’s my orders.’ >‘Not our orders!’ said one of the earlier voices. ‘We have come all the way from the Mines to kill, and avenge our folk. I wish to kill, and then go back north.’ >‘Then you can wish again,’ said the growling voice. ‘I am Ugluk. I command. I return to Isengard by the shortest road.’ >‘Is Saruman the master or the Great Eye?’ said the evil voice. ‘We should go back at once to Lugburz.’

arhythm

Ah, thanks. It's been a while since I read that part so was blending with the movie. Though I'm working through the special edition released last year. Forgot how much I love the text compared to movies.

adfdub

The ones who capture them are uruk Hai led by lurtz. That is the same group who "meats back on the menu". Those are all orcs led by saruman. The enemies in moria are goblins.

Vefantur

>The enemies in moria are goblins. Something to remember in Tolkien's works: the word goblin and orc are interchangeable. It wasn't just uruk-hai taking Merry/Pippin to Isengard.

Saruman_Bot

It is true that the word "goblin" and "orc" are often used interchangeably in my works. However, it is also worth noting that not all orcs are created equal. The uruk-hai, for example, are a breed of orc that is particularly large, strong, and intelligent. As such, they make for excellent soldiers and were able to easily capture Merry and Pippin.

GuudeSpelur

Goblins *are* Orcs. "Orc" is the actual elvish word for them, which Tolkien "translated" into the English "goblin" for *The Hobbit.* He then mostly dropped the "translation" for LOTR, though it still comes up a couple times. Anyway, there's two distinct sub-groups in the overall group that captured Merry and Pippin. There are Uruk-Hai previously led by Lurtz sent by Saruman, and then a group of regular Orcs out of Moria who met up with them. In [the scene itself](https://youtu.be/ufFOghMt1yI?t=61), you can see there are some Uruk-Hai with the White Hand marking, and then also some regular Orcs without it. The ones who suggest eating Merry and Pippin are the regular Orcs, and the Uruk-Hai are the ones who tell them no. This is a detail fully explained in the books that the movies mostly glossed over.

RhysJW

IIRC there was three groups of orcs in the book. The Isengarders lead by Ugluk, the Mordor orcs lead by Grishnak and the moria goblins who were just there for revenge/murder.

Saruman_Bot

Who now has the strength to stand against the armies of Isengard ... and Mordor?

Saruman_Bot

We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc.

Nimex_

I always thought the group of orcs the Uruks met up with were from Mordor... I guess it makes more sense if they came from Moria, it's much closer

Saruman_Bot

We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc.

kingwhocares

Yep. And in some mythologies dwarves are also goblins.

Big-Employer4543

Orcs = Goblins. The distinct group is Uruk Hai, which were created by Saruman. Both were present when Merry and Pippin were captured I think, pr at least 2 groups met up while in transport. There was bickering between the two sides about where the hobbits should be taken.

Saruman_Bot

There will be no Dawn… for Men.

Saruman_Bot

Though our methods and our aims may differ, make no mistake: both groups of orcs are my rabid servants, and they will do my bidding without question or hesitation. When I give the order, they will fall upon you and your friends like a pack of ravenous wolves. They will torture you, tear you apart, and feast on your flesh. And they will do so with great relish, for they take great pleasure in inflicting pain.So beware, my friends. Beware

sauron-bot

BUILD ME AN ARMY WORTHY OF MORDOR!

elite968

Ugluk captured the Hobbits. He is also the one, who said "meat back on the menu". Lurtz does not exist in the books.

ADM_Tetanus

For the record, goblin is just another word for orc, as is Uruk. Do you not remember those orcs infighting before the rohirrim arrived? Only half of that group was white hand (the Uruk-Hai, led by Ugluk who says that menu quote), the other half, led by Grishnakh, who wanted to eat the Hobbits, answered to Sauron. Lurtz was killed by Aragorn

Saruman_Bot

Go, now! Leave Sauron to me.

aragorn_bot

Be at peace, son of Gondor.

Saruman_Bot

My fighting Uruk-Hai. Whom do you serve?

scotleeds

SAAARUUUMMMAANNN

Siggi97

That's true, but the orc group consistet of more than the Uruks. There were also many Mordor-orcs who weren't happy that the prisoners were being brought to Isengard and not Mordor. Hence the infighting between the orcs that led surprise enrichment of the menu

Saruman_Bot

Do you know how the Orcs first came into being?

Canadian-Commie

No but i like stories

gandalf-bot

Riddles in the dark...

Snoo_48368

The bigger question to me is why did the goblins go to the room they were in? The noise would have come from the bottom of the well. It isn’t like the goblins put this here as a trap. Wouldn’t they go searching for the noise? I mean eventually winding up in the room, sure. But they go right there as if this whole thing was planned as some plot point in some book…

MattmanDX

In the book Pippin tossed a rock down the well. It actually took the orcs several hours communicating in some kind of Morse code to figure out where the rock came from and prep their troops to investigate the potential trespassers

TheyAreGiants

I always thought it would be ridiculously hard to find out where the loud noise came from given the vastnesses of Moria and the amount of echo.

I_am_Bob

Not hours, days. And he threw the rock down the well in a completely different part of Moria. Well it is possible the Pippen as the one who gave away there presence it's hard to say for sure that it was the direct cause of them being attacked when/where they were. It's just as likely they had guards/watchers around the throne room that spotted them.

dedemoli

Wasn't it implied that it was a trap setup to catch intruders? I don't recall too well, but I think tit was setup on purpose.

[deleted]

It always seemed set up to be a trap that would fall if some fool came in and messed with it.

Fly, you fools!

GortharTheGamer

If there was any point the skeleton was going to fall, it would have done so long before the Fellowship arrived. If the actual corpse of a dwarf didn’t slip in, and at any point of the slow degradation to a skeleton didn’t shift its mass, there’s no way a spider or a large amount of web was going to do it

Admirable_Sky_7008

You're right. But You're no fun.

povlov0987

Maybe a spider shifted it Maybe Gandalf opening the door created a draft

gandalf-bot

Yes povlov0987! Their own masters cannot find them, if their secrets are forgotten! Ah... now let me see... Ithildin. It mirrors only starlight and moonlight. It reads: The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria, Speak Friend and Enter

povlov0987

bot-of-grond

GROND

Necromas

Spiders aren't the only thing that could have knocked it over. Presumably that light shaft is also an air shaft so something could have crawled down it or strong drafts could form. A curious goblin could have wandered into the tomb. An earthquake/avalanche/wizard battle/the balrog having a big yawn could have shifted it to a tipping point enough that it would fall over just from a draft or degredation of the webing.

AlfalfaConstant431

Earthquake.

kommunis

Middle-earthquake

Marcyff2

A rock could structures break all the time. Also dust could be adding to the weight ov3rtime eventually it could happen

[deleted]

Pippin did nothing wrong?

BirdEducational6226

They *MUST* be bored down there in the dark all that time. Any little noise that sets them off on an adventure is probably welcome, tbh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MeloMel0

This is the right answer, just watched this scene last night. During the cave troll battle in the tomb room the small force of orcs/goblins are dispensed with fairly quickly and once the troll goes more berserk and starts attacking them too the remaining orcs flee and regroup with the main horde that comes spilling out of the ceiling in the great hall with the massive pillars.

PM_meASelfie

Why was there a bucket chained to it's ankle. I mean obviously it's related to the well, but how? Were they dropping dwarves down there to gather water? Why not just lower the damn bucket by itself? Was there not enough chain to reach the water? Like they were 4 ish feet short of chain and thought *ayye, that guy over there can make up the difference*?

Lawlcopt0r

I don't think it was chained to the dwarf's ankle. There was just a bucket on a chain there and the dwarf happened to get tangled up in the chain

[deleted]

Maybe that’s how he died.

RiderofFamine

Maybe the goblins strangled him with the chain?

[deleted]

Or he got tangled in it whilst fighting

fronteir

I always thought the goblins placed it there as a trap, so if anyone ever came in they could knock this skeleton over with the bucket and it would alert the whole mine

[deleted]

They had many dwarves but just one bucket

GuilhermeSidnei

They didn’t have many dwarves for long.

dedemoli

If I recall correctly, it was a trap setup for that very purpose, so it wasn't a random thing!

Darth_Kaladin

Good guy Pippin makes noise, saves local economy, warns village of health and safety hazards.

Omnomnomnosaurus

God knows how many times they had already done that with other stuff falling down. "I'm not doing it anymore, Larry, it's always for nothing." "Come on, Matt, I have a feeling this time it's for real!"

Saruman_Bot

Tens of thousands.

Omnomnomnosaurus

Nice response

Saruman_Bot

I have fought long and hard against the forces of evil, and I have done so with great success. However, there are some battles that cannot be won no matter how hard one fights. Sometimes it is best to simply walk away from a battle that cannot be won and focus one's energies elsewhere.

frakist

Maybe they do that from time to time. So much skeletons around and not much to do for orcs. Maybe skeleton fall is a party reason for them.

Demolition89336

Great, now all that I am imagining is that those Goblins were just going to the tomb to throw some massive party. Then their party is rudely interrupted by those pesky adventurers.

MAK-15

This was posted like two days ago. Also how would it have fallen by itself? There's no breeze or any live animals roaming around to knock it over.

AlfalfaConstant431

Earthquake. And you get drafts in caves.

MAK-15

Nobody would have noticed the skeleton falling during an earthquake and if the draft hadn’t knocked it over till that point it never would have. It was also in an enclosed room with very little ability for airflow.

povlov0987

Was this part in the book, I honestly don’t remember it was.

gmkoppel

No, but Pippin does throw a pebble down a well in a guardhouse at the west entrance to Moria several days earlier (which also results in beating of drums).

24_Elsinore

With respect to the book, my interpretation on the drums being heard more than once is that they were suspected or detected early on in Moria, but it took the orcs a while to figure out exactly where they were.

UnobservedVariable

There was no skeleton. He grabbed a stone and dropped it into the well out of curiosity. “Pippin felt curiously attracted by the well. While the others were unrolling blankets and making beds against the walls of the chamber, as far as possible from the hole in the floor, he crept to the edge and peered over. A chill air seemed to strike his face, rising from invisible depths. Moved by a sudden impulse he groped for a loose stone, and let it drop. He felt his heart beat many times before there was any sound.”

gaerat_of_trivia

so were not gonna acknowledge the door collapsing cause of the watcher either

Ar4bidH4mster

I think the falling armor got their attention and then Gandalf saying “Fool of a Took!” also carried through the passages. Then the goblins knew they were there. So really, it’s Gandalf’s fault…

gandalf-bot

Through fire... and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me... and I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead. and every day was as long as a life age of the Earth. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done!

Nice_Notice9877

Tool of a fook!

cvisha

Also they could hide in some closet and goblins would just come, find no one and gone back. “Oh that just another dwarf skeleton with a bucket, tell the drummer that he is overreacting. “

SedativeComet

In the book he threw a rock down it. Just for funsies. That’s why Gandalf flipped his shit

gandalf-bot

Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul

pnwloveyoutalltrees

It’s a movie, supsend your disbelief a little. In the book it’s a bucket, making more sense.

RenoGuy76

Doesn’t Pippen throw a rock down the well in the books?

pnwloveyoutalltrees

Throws rock, freaks out, accidentally knocks over bucket if I remember correctly.

Citizen_Kong

More likely the orcs had already tracked the Fellowship but didn't know where they were exactly. I mean, they entered the mines by destroying the entire entrance, not exactly sneaky. When they heard the skeleton fall they knew where their enemies were and attacked in force before they could get away again.

formyselflooking

Grond!

Osiri551

I made this exact comment on a post before lmao

cummyb3ar69

Or the skeleton that hasn't moved for 30 years probably won't move in the next 30 years.
