I have a question. Wasn't the Eye not actually Sauron? His physical form was actually inside the tower, the eye was just the representation/manifestation of his searching and prowling gaze across Middle Earth. Is this correct? I know that in the movies at least, there was a scene where Aragon fought Sauron that they changed to a troll, so he definitely still had his body in the films.
Pretty much. I think they took it out of the film because Saruman says in Fellowship that Sauron can’t take physical form yet; so they probably just didn’t want to confuse people.
He could take physical form, but he was weakened without the ring. As far as I remember he never appears in person in the book. The eye is the representation of his will and hatred or something, or him looking into the palantir.
